I'd like to take Minardi. By the way, which software are you using to run this?

The physical races will be done on GP2, but I've been spending some time working out performance formulae with an Excel spreadsheet. So it's really a mixture of things working together, the effects of which will be seen over time.

You know what? I'm tired of constantly picking crappy teams. For once, I would like Ferrari.

I'd like to take control of Jordan, if that's OK.

Yeah, this is real drivers only.

Re: F1 Management Series - 1997
Ok, here's what you need to do now.
Below are the lists of engines and drivers available, with your budgets.
Drivers: Your team needs to pick up two race drivers and a test driver. From the list, you need to bid for the drivers you would like; bidding a larger amount of money will increase the chance of you landing the driver.
There are also pay-drivers available; the amount of money they bring is on the list. If the "paydriver" lands a race seat, the team gets the whole figure quoted added to their budget. If the "paydriver" lands a test seat, the figure quoted is halved.
What you need to do: You must make your bids for your three drivers, and 'reserve' bids for two others. Remember, you may be required to sign a driver if an engine company dictates that you must do so.
Engines: Engine bidding is a little more straight-forward for some teams. Manufacturer teams automatically have the base cost deducted from their budgets. (eg. Ferrari). Some engine companies have "favoured" teams, and will supply those teams for the base cost quoted, however those teams are not obliged to sign with those particular companies. (for example, Sauber are a "favoured" team for the '96 Ferrari engines, but may bid for other engines)
The other teams must bid for the engines in the same way as drivers; the more you bid, the greater the chance of landing the engine supply. Some engine suppliers have quotas, some may take on an unlimited amount of teams.
What you need to do: You must bid for 3 engines, listed in order of preference. You may bid for any engine (except Ferrari), just in case "favoured" teams decide to look elsewhere. If you are a favoured team electing to stay with an engine supplier, you can just state this and the base value will be deducted from your budgets.
Upgrade System: Later in the season, there will be 5 test sessions over the course of the year. These will cost £500k to test, and £1m to test vigourously (which can produce greater rewards). Attendance is not mandatory, but it is recommended to keep the car's development on track. Therefore, you will need to accommodate this in your spending. Pre-season testing is free.
Tyres: You may pick between Goodyear and Bridgestone. No charge for tyres.
Now, you have until the 17th July to formulate your plans and make your bids. Bids are to be sent to me via PM. (deadline passed)
Any queries, don't hesitate to ask.

Re: F1 Management Series - 1997 - Instructions on Page 1
I've had a few bids in, and I think there's been a little confusion over bidding. I guess the mass of text in my instructional post had something to do with that...
The list value of each driver and engine is just a guide; although you are perfectly entitled to submit your offer at this price you may be outbid by other teams (unless you're bidding for engines where you are a favoured team). The destination of a pay-driver will be done via an RNG, weighted towards race seats. Remember that the funding brought by a pay-driver is halved in a test seat.

As I'm a blithering idiot and quoted only base values in my Jordan bid, I've redone it and sent it again.

There's a dreadfully awkward 13th slot left over that I can't close up, so would anyone be interested in this opening? I'm considering having either Dome or Forti take this space...
EDIT: Or Stefan GP...

Well if your opening another slot Dome would be better, they were planning an entry for 1997.
Re: F1 Management Series 1997 - PM your bids (1 open slot!)
Do we have to pick our drivers from that list you provided or can we pick any active driver that would be suitable for F1 at the time (i.e. Paul Tracy, Allan McNish, Alessandro Zanardi)?

You're definitely entitled to do that, but there are currently plenty of proven drivers who haven't had any bids in for them yet.
Plus, after a discussion the 13th slot will be - for the sheer rejectness - Stefan GP (who did lodge a bid for 1997, allegedly). First come, first served as to who gets them.

I've got offers from everyone except Ferrari, I think. I'll collate the bids and announce who gets what in due course.
Anyone who has spare slots within the team gets to bid again when everything's sorted out.

Re: F1 Management Series 1997 - PM your bids!
ENGINE BIDS
Here are the bids for engines, to begin:
Ferrari: As they only supply Ferrari with their '97-spec engines, Ferrari get Ferrari. Obviously.
(Bids: Ferrari - £17m)
Customer Ferrari: Minardi made the only bid for the '96-spec Ferrari engines, so they receive them. Rumours go abound that Italian clothing company and Minardi sponsor Valleverde wish to put their name to the engine.
(Bids: Minardi - £12.5m)
Ford V10: Stewart were their favoured choice, and as they've made a bid they will receive works Ford power for 1997.
(Bids: Stewart - £14m)
Mercedes-Benz: McLaren favoured; McLaren get.
(Bids: McLaren - £17m)
Renault: Two engines supplies, and with Benetton and Williams being favoured teams their bids go through.
(Bids: Williams - £18m, Benetton - £18m, Prost - £18m, Arrows - £20m, Sauber - £15m)
Mugen Honda: Three bids from Jordan, Prost and Stefan. Whichever team lands the Japanese powerplants will also take Shinji Nakano in a race seat.
(Bids: Stefan - £15m, Jordan - £15m, Prost - £15m)
Bids are all the same, so status comes into this. As Mugen would be more tempted by a team higher up the grid, Jordan and Prost have a 40% chance each of landing the engines. Stefan have a 20% chance; Mugen would prefer a proven team but can see potential in them. So, the RNG will be as follows:
Jordan - 1-40
Prost - 41-80
Stefan - 81-100
And the number is...52! Prost receive Mugen power and Shinji Nakano.
Peugeot: Although Prost lodged interest, they're now out of the running for Peugeot engines. The French marque have the resources to supply two teams.
(Bids: Jordan - £15m, Tyrrell - £15m, Arrows - £15m)
Same bid values again, so we're looking at the team status again. Jordan would have the largest chance of landing the engines, whilst Tyrrell and Arrows would have an equal chance.
This is the first set of RNG boundaries:
Jordan - 1-40
Tyrrell - 41-70
Arrows - 71-100
The number is...15! Jordan continue with Peugeot power. This means a 50-50 split between Arrows and Tyrrell.
Second set of RNG values:
Tyrrell - 1-50
Arrows - 51-100
The second number is...32! Tyrrell now have Peugeot power for 1997.
Yamaha: The John Judd-designed engines have been a mainstay of the middle of the pack for the majority of the '90s. This engine package received much interest from the lower half of the grid as an affordable solution, however Minardi, Jordan and Tyrrell have contracts in place.
(Bids: Sauber - £10m, Arrows - £10m, Lola - £10.5m)
Yamaha are most drawn to Sauber but have an eye on Arrows. Although Lola aren't high on their list of priorities the small team have curried a little favour with a little bit more money. So...
Lola - 1-20
Sauber - 21-70
Arrows - 71-100
The number is...51! Sauber now have a Yamaha deal! As Arrows and Lola had a 30% and 20% chance respectively, it is now a 60:40 split.
Lola - 1-40
Arrows - 41-100
And the number is...62! Arrows finally get an engine deal signed up.
Ford V8 - As there is no limit to the supply, Lola and Stefan can pick up customer Fords at list price. Although the engines are cheap, they've been made to a tried and tested design that is very reliable.
(Bids: Lola - £9m, Stefan - £9m)
Driver bids will come over the next few days.

I was thinking £1m...I mean, it's a supply to another Italian team so of course there's gonna be some commercial benefits.

Re: F1 Management Series 1997 - PM your bids!
Great, and on that note I'll start putting together a wiki page so we've got a log of everything...

DRIVER BIDS
Some drivers only received one bid, and the ones that were among the first choices for some teams will now be sorted.
JEAN ALESI (FRA) - Having only received ab offer from current champions Williams, Alesi jumps at the opportunity. Cost: £10m
LUCA BADOER (ITA) - Stewart wanted to make the experienced Italian their test driver, and thus Badoer duly obliges. Cost: £4m
NORBERTO FONTANA (ARG) - Tyrrell put a list-price bid for Fontana to take the test driver berth. The Argentinian takes what he can get. Cost: £500k
MIKA HAKKINEN (FIN) - Although Benetton lodged a bid for Hakkinen, it was below the list price and thus the Finn refused to entertain it. He stays with McLaren for 1997. Cost: £14m
JOHNNY HERBERT (GBR) - Jordan are certainly a team in the ascendancy, and Herbert is thus expected to bring a wealth of experience to the team. The British driver will therefore leave Sauber after one season. Cost: £6m
GIANNI MORBIDELLI (ITA) - Having been affiliated with Ferrari for some time, Morbidelli is now the official 1997 test driver for the team. Cost: £2m
SHINJI NAKANO (JPN) - Mugen Honda require Nakano gets a seat free of charge, so he debuts at the newly renamed Prost team. Cost: £0
MICHAEL SCHUMACHER (GER) - Arguably the most complete driver on the grid only received one offer; this was from current team Ferrari. The two-time world champion sees no reason to move from the iconic Italian team. Cost: £17m
TORANOSUKE TAKAGI (JPN) - Takagi has backing from PIAA, and as Arrows made the only bid for him as a second driver, then PIAA will pay the team the full £2m. Cost: -£2m
ALEXANDER WURZ (AUT) - The Austrian driver was the youngest winner of the Le Mans 24-Hours in 1996, and feels ready to step up to the demands of F1. Jorsan made him a decent offer, and as it is for an immediate race seat Wurz snaps at the chance. Cost: £3.5m
More to come...

Re: F1 Management Series 1997 - PM your bids!
DRIVER BIDS PART TWO
This includes drivers who have multiple bids, one of which is in a "first-choice" capacity.
RUBENS BARRICHELLO (BRA) - The Brazilian was a popular pick, attracting attention from four teams in total. Although Benetton offered the most, they didn't make him a first choice option. Ferrari and Williams made bids for Barrichello as second drivers, and Stewart made a bid for him to lead the team. Therefore, I think we've got equal odds, don't you?
RNG Values:
Ferrari: 1-25
Williams: 26-50
Stewart: 51-75
Benetton: 76-100
And we get...38! Barrichello now joins Williams alongside Jean Alesi. Cost: £8.5m
GERHARD BERGER (AUT) - The experienced Austrian driver intends this to be his last F1 season, but still has much to offer. Sauber and Benetton have made bids, with Sauber's being the largest. Hence, I think this would take equal odds.
Sauber: 1-50
Benetton: 51-100
The number is...30! Benetton somehow miss out on another target as Berger winds down his career with Sauber. Cost: £6m
KENNY BRÄCK (SWE) - Last year's F3000 runner-up now fancies a shot at an F1 seat. He's got the choice of a test-seat with Williams, or a race-seat with Tyrrell. He's top priority for the Tyrrell seat but not the Williams one, so he favours Tyrrell here.
Tyrrell: 1-70
Williams: 71-100
And we get...61! Brack joins Tyrrell's race line-up. Cost: £1.25m
PEDRO DE LA ROSA (ESP) - Repsol have thrown their weight and petro-dollars behind De La Rosa, and are eager to get greater coverage with a race-seat, hence the higher sponsorship incentive for teams. Minardi and Stefan have offered race-seats, and Benetton, Prost and Lola have offered test seats. These aren't as appealing to both De La Rosa and Repsol.
Minardi - 1-35
Stefan - 36-70
Benetton - 71-85
Prost - 86-95
Lola - 96-100
The number is...7! Minardi have a driver, Repsol backing and a cheque for £2m sitting on the desk. Cost: -£2m
PEDRO DINIZ (BRA) - The second of the three "Paydriver Pedros" has an offer to race for Stefan, an offer to test at McLaren and some contingency offers from Minardi and Arrows. As Stefan have an obvious race-driving berth, they're the priority. The McLaren test offer could bear fruit, but Parmalat would prefer Diniz to race. The Minardi and Arrows offers would still be considered though, especially as they could both potentially lead to race seats.
McLaren - 1-20
Minardi - 21-40
Arrows - 41-60
Stefan - 61-100
The number is...93! Stefan Grand Prix hire their first racer and pocket £2m in the process. Cost: -£2m
HEINZ-HARALD FRENTZEN (GER) - Frentzen has so far spent his career with Sauber, and he would be open to continuing with them. Like their bid for Fisichella, Williams wanted Frentzen as a race-driver, so they nominally decided not to bid for him as a tester. Therefore, Benetton have the chance to sign the German, whilst offering more money and race-winning opportunities than Sauber.
Sauber - 1-40
Benetton - 41-100
The number is...52! Benetton manage to prise away Frentzen. Cost: £10m
GIANCARLO FISICHELLA (ITA) - The young Italian hotshoe has one serious offer from Benetton and one offer from Arrows below his asking price. Williams also lodged a bid, but was dependent on Fisichella being a race driver and thus is retracted since their lineup is now full. However, Benetton have bid £10.5m, a price they cannot afford. They have the opportunity to lower it if they are still keen, and Arrows may raise it. Fisichella is still open for bidding.
TOM KRISTENSEN (DEN) - F3000 racer Kristensen was a popular bid amongst the teams; five bids came in for varying positions. Ferrari made a bid, but this was most likely for a test berth which has been filled by Gianni Morbidelli. However, Kristensen does put an egg in the Ferrari basket just to see where he lands. Williams and Prost offer a definite test seat with more money, and Minardi and Tyrrell both offer first driver roles. So...
Ferrari - 1-5
Williams - 6-20
Prost - 21-30
Minardi - 31-65
Tyrrell - 66-100
And the number is...88! Kristensen joins Tyrrell for 1997 alongside Kenny Brack. Cost: £1.75m
With that, another signing is a certainty...
RICARDO ZONTA (BRA) Williams offered Zonta a test seat, depending on whether Brack or Kristensen signed. As neither were tempted to put in the mileage for the Grove-based test team, Zonta was given the chance to do so. Cost: £2m
PEDRO LAMY (POR) - Lamy did a full season for Minardi last year, and he's got the money to try to make that happen. He's got an from Sauber in what looks to be a test role, as well as potential race seats with Minardi, Lola and Stewart (the latter of which he isn't entirely favoured for). However, he's confident each team will give him a role in some capacity, so he's going to give each an equal opportunity to present him with something.
Sauber - 1-25
Minardi - 26-50
Wait for potential Lola role - 51-75
Wait for potential Stewart role- 76-100
And the number is...68! Lamy would therefore like to see if he can get something with Lola, depending on whether other bids play out his way. Cost: potentially -£2m
JORG MULLER - The reigning F3000 champion received bids of £1m from both Arrows and Tyrrell, however with a complete lineup Muller is free to join Arrows. Cost: £1m
OLIVIER PANIS (FRA) - Panis took his first win at Monaco in 1996, and with a bright future he's attracted many top teams. Ferrari and McLaren offer 2nd-driver roles in their teams, and Prost look to keep the Frenchman in their blue machines. Sauber offered a paltry £2m, and Panis laughed them out of the room. Prost and Ferrari have offered the most money, although McLaren offers a faint chance of a future #1 role.
Ferrari - 1-35
Prost - 36-70
McLaren - 71-100
The number is...9! Michael Schumacher and Olivier Panis look like a formidable lineup. Cost: £8m
With that...
RICARDO ROSSET (BRA) - Rosset "raced" for Arrows last year, and the Brazilian has a hefty bit of money behind him to try and land another seat for 1997. It seems that Stefan, Arrows, Minardi and Sauber have offered him a test role, and Lola have offered him an almost-certain race drive. Stewart also have two race-seats open, but it remains to be seen whether they will bid for another driver to cover their failed bid for Barrichello.
Stefan - 1-15
Arrows - 16-30
Minardi - 31-45
Sauber - 46-60
Lola - 60-90
Wait for potential Stewart offer - 90-100
The number is...48! Rosset has opted for the possible Sauber test role. Cost: -£1.5m
TARSO MARQUES (BRA) - Marques managed a handful of races last season for Minardi, and after Lola failed in their bid for Rosset it appears Marques has the freedom to join them. . Cost: potentially -£2m
MIKA SALO (FIN) - "The Other Mika" has offers from Arrows and Prost to be the potential lead driver, both for the same amount.
Arrows - 1-50
Prost - 51-100
And it is...26! Salo partners Takagi at Arrows. Cost: £4m
VINCENZO SOSPIRI (ITA) - The 1995 F3000 champion has an offer from Stefan to race, and an offer from Jordan to test for double the money. Probably a 50/50 split on this one...
Stefan - 1-50
Jordan - 51-100
The number is...57! Sospiri will become Jordan's test driver. Cost: £500k
JOS VERSTAPPEN (NED) - Having become something of an F1 journeyman already, Verstappen is on the hunt for a new seat. Both Stewart and Lola have offered the Dutchman race seats, but Stewart have offered more money with possible better prospects.
Stewart - 1-80
Lola - 81-100
And it's...75! Stewart have Verstappen on their books. Cost: £7m
That's it for round 2 of bidding! Next instructions coming up...

Re: F1 Management Series 1997 - PM your bids!
The last bids are more straight forward. I'll post the current driver list and remaining budgets below this text.
All you've got to do now is bid in this thread for the unattached drivers to fill up the remaining spaces. It was nice to have some unpressured bids for drivers in private, but it took an age to trawl through so it'll be easier just to finish it off here. I've added a couple of extra drivers just to make sure we don't run out, and reduced some prices. If you're not happy with a driver, you can sell them back to the market or to another team owner for the price you paid until the deadline. You have until the 24th July to finalise your lineups.
Remaining Budgets:
Currently signed contracts for 1997
Drivers available.
