Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2014 Belgium

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for JEV's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until the 29th August

1) Daniel Ricciardo: Took full advantage of Rosberg and Hamilton's coming together and beat Mercedes fair and square in a race where Mercedes should have had a near-insurmountable speed advantage.

2) McLaren: A strong showing after a season which has not been impressive.

Honourable Mention: Force India - Perez scores and Hulkenberg comes close after a terrible qualifying.

1) Raikkonen. Great drive, best finish of the season. Got over 1000 career points ironically on a track he won 4 times in.
2) Ricciardo. Another nice race from the Aussie, third win of the season. Vettel who?

Honorable mention: Bottas. Put the Williams into the podium after they were pretty much struggling to get way up high all weekend long.

2)Daniel Ricciardo: Smiley has become silently the third contender in the WDC

1) Daniel Ricciardo - Unbelievable. Three wins this season, has finished ahead of Vettel in 10 out of 12 races. Only 64 points behind Rosberg.
2) Kevin Magnussen - Let's all show some love for K-MAG.

1) KEVIN MAGNUSSEN - That was the drive of a full-fledged team leader. Brilliant.
2) Red Bull - Who on earth thought they would be that competitive around Spa of all tracks?

1) Kimi Raikkonen: Perhaps it's more a sign of how bad the first half of this year was for him, but so what? That was an excellent drive.

2) Andre Lotterer: I've seen and expect Ricciardo to win, and Bottas to make the podium, when Mercedes wobble. I've seen and (can reasonably) expect good battling from Vettel and Magnussen. I've seen and expect Kvyat and the Force Indias to hover around the points. I didn't expect a Super Formula and Le Mans driver to step in and comprehensively outqualify his team-mate on debut.

1. Kimi Räikkönen: The Iceman is back!
2. (shared, 2 points for each) André Lotterer: Technical problems ruined his race immediately, but what he did in qualifying was seriously impressive!
Daniel Ricciardo: If Mercedes doesn't win, he does. Definitely a future champion.

2. Andre Lotterer - Shame his race was so short, but he was incredibly impressive up to that point. Hope he gets another go later in the season.

1) Raikkonen - whatever it is about Spa and Kimi, the two seem to work well for each other and this was the one race where, after a somewhat difficult qualifying session, he finally managed to gain an upper hand on Alonso and pulled out a surprisingly strong performance. This is the sort of performance that most of us have expected from Kimi - let's hope that he can continue this stronger run of form from here on in.

2) Ricciardo - once again, Ricciardo has shown the nous required to put himself into a position to take advantage where others couldn't. At a circuit which many expected to work against the characteristics of his car, he managed to overcome those issues and proved to be pretty punchy in the opening laps where needed - not only that, considering the attempts by Mercedes to pressurise him in the closing stages, he managed his pace and the tyres to perfection and left Nico looking a bit ragged in the closing stages.

1. LOTTERER :D
He was running ahead of both Marussias and his team-mate before the car gave up. I imagine he would have made it stay that way. One second clear of Ericsson on his debut. Looking at how other mid-season replacements have done in recent years, I'd say he did as good a job as any racing driver in the world would be capable of. Hopefully Kolles does the same trick and sticks him in Ericsson's car at Suzuka!

2. Raikkonen
Usually a 4th place doesn't warrant an IIDOTR nomination for a Ferrari driver that's a former world champion...but given his form of late, it's hard to see how he can't be considered for it.

1. Raikkonen: That's the Kimi I remember!

2. Riccardo: This guy might pull an upset in the WDC by the way things are going.

Honorable Mentions:

Lotterer: I was expecting him to be absolutely terrible. But he took me by surprise.

Bottas: Another fine podium!

McLaren: Nice run after a lackluster first season.

Hulkenburg: Very unlucky not to get in the points.

1. Raikkonen, for the reason Biscione suggests above. Alonso had a very ordinary day by comparison.

2. Ricciardo, perhaps we are getting to the point where Dan winning isn't particularly improbable, but that was still some pretty impressive tyre management.

HM: Lotterer - I was worried that he would be underprepared for the opportunity.

1. Räikkönen. 4th is an amazing result given his form this season.

2. Lotterer. Hasn't driven, let alone raced a single seater since HWNSNBM knows when, and what does he do? Immidately outqualifies his own team mate!

Ricciardo - All the Mecedes tantrums disguise the ' how the **** did he do that? question' Face it, the Red Bull was not the qickest car out there. A real, quality champion's drive.

I have to say I really don't see how Ricciardo did anything improbable here. Ricciardo has had a habit of capitalizing on opportunities given by Mercedes when Mercedes screw up, that to me there is no doubt, so I can't label that as improbable anymore.

However, I can say that one driver was up to improbability and another was pretty good at going for it.

1. André Lotterer - He made Ericsson look like more of a fool than I thought. I know Kamui has made Ericsson look like a fool but Kamui has been outqualified by Marcus. André simply thrashed him in qualy and got past Grosjean and Chilton after T1 but the car gave up when things were looking up. Had the car held up, he'd have easily been best of the backmarkers, which before the weekend I thought was nowhere near close to happening. Brilliant job André Lotterer. I wish he got a few more chances to show what he could do, he's more than capable of driving a Formula 1 car.

2. Kimi Räikkönen - He kept it clean and had a great race unlike Fernando. Had strategy been better he could have had a podium in my eyes. Nice work Kimi.
