Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2015 Australia

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Ericsson's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until the 20th March

My picks:
1. Sauber
2. Button

1. Sauber - After the worst year of their existence last year, and all the contretemps off-track this weekend, to come home with 14 points in the bag already is probably beyond their wildest dreams.

2. Jenson Button - Somehow dragged the car to the chequered flag.

1) Sauber - Overcame all the legal crap and Bailiffs waiting for them at circuit gates to score double points

2) Button - Not only got to the end for Mclaren but even fought with Perez once or twice

1. Sauber: Considering what last year was for them, and all the troubles they went through this weekend. Getting a double points finish was a breath of fresh air for the team.

2. Button: He may have not scored points, but he kept it to the end.

Honorable Mentions:

Carlos Sainz Jr.: Who knows what he could have achieved if it wasn't for the botched pitstop.

1. Sauber, 4th in Constructors after first race, rookie in 5th and even Ericsson scores points. Wonder if they will have more surprises for us this year?
2. Button, was really hoping for one more retirement so he could get points.

2. Sainz

HM to Max Verstappen as well - all of the rookies looked capable and competent, which isn't exactly what I was expecting.

1. Felipe Nasr: Amazing debut!
2. (shared, 2 points for each) Carlos Sainz Jr.: Great qualifying, points on debut.
Max Verstappen: Would have become the youngest point scorer if it hadn't been for the engine failure.
Marcus Ericsson: Beaten by Nasr but scored his first points. The EricssonEra is here!

1- Sauber- After the weekend from hell (well it was their own Fault) they got BOTH cars into the points was a terrific result! And the fact that Ericsson becomes the first swede to score since 1989!!!

2- Jenson Button- After the testing programme from Hell, Getting THAT car to finish the race was terrific. Pity he couldn't beat the Awful Perez but thats life sadly. The Only way is up!

1 - Has to be Felipe Nasr, now I guess you could make argument about Sauber deserving this as a whole team but to be honest, I didn´t find Ericsson´s performance that great and while the car is whole lot better than last year, I think they simply looked bit better than they should had with so many problems for other teams like McLaren, Red Bull and Lotus.

2 - Really tough to find anyone else who I felt did better than expected, I guess it´s between both Toro Rosso drivers since both did decently considering that a) they are rookies and b) they problems that eventually dropped them out from good points weren´t their fault and Jenson Button, who managed to get the car to finish and even fight with Perez for a little while... As much as I like Button, I´m going to give this one to Toro Rosso drivers for their decent rookie performance.

Got to be Sauber and their drivers Nasr and Ericsson. Congrats to scoring big points today. Here's hoping this helps with paying off Giedo.

1) Sauber: What a difference! The car not only looks good, but seems to be a beast for high-speed circuits (a-la March/Leyton House of the 80's). Nasr drove like a seasoned pro and Ericsson is starting to make himself noticing in dogfights.

2) Jenson Button: A hero for getting that piece of junk of a car to the flag. And while he had the measure of Checo with the aid of the softer compound, he gave the car the millage that needs to be improved.

Honorable mentions to Carlos Sainz Jr. (another solid drive for the other rookie) and Sebastian Vettel (new team, new air, renewed ambitions)

The Clash of the Titans Award goes to Marcus Ericsson: Agressive pass over Sainz Jr.

1) Felipe Nasr: Impressive run for a rookie, making the most of the potential of an improved Sauber.

2) Max Verstappen: Very quick and surprisingly mature for a 17-year-old with only one season of single-seater racing behind him. Pity about the engine blow-up.

Honourable Mention: Jenson Button - just kept driving, despite the poor car and the lack of testing.

1. Felipe Nasr - Great drive. People doubted his racecraft in GP2, but I think he's really shown what he can do on a higher stage. He's scored more points than Gutierrez managed in two seasons already.

2. Marcus Ericsson and Max Verstappen - Ericsson proved that he CAN hack it in F1, and Verstappen was splendid...shame about the engine, really.

1 - Felipe Nasr. Great effort from the rookie with probably the lowest expectations before the season.
2 - Jenson Button Finishing in the McLaren-Honda after a disastrous pre-season. He even had a nice battle with Sergio Perez.

Honorable mentions to the Toro Rosso drivers for two mature debut races, Ferrari for seeming a lot stronger than last year (although that was expected) and Manor for creating the livery McLaren-Honda should have had, for showing up, for almost driving and for reject spirit.

2 - Sainz & Verstappen: A pit stop and a car failure ruined their races, but boy did they show promise.

1. Nasr - Seems to suffer from Bernolditis, his fat wallet seems to blindside people to the fact he's actually a decent driver. Still wasn't expecting a top 5 from him though.

2. Button - For making the flag, and not being lapped 4 or 5 times.

Sauber - After a dismal 2014 and all the the problems with the court case, the Sauber's had a great race both drivers looked racy with both Nasr and Ericsson moving through the field

Button - Driving a car that had yet to break into double figures, done well to finish the race and of course managed to hold of Perez for a while
