Minardi would like to set their development towards increasing horsepower.

However, we suspect this is rather silly, and will start by improving reliability instead.

Out of curiosity, how do you know this?

Not that these things are secrets, but I found it very difficult to discover the nationality and industry of some of the sponsors in 1985 - it's almost as if some of the companies have disappeared without trace.

Micromax being a DeLonghi subsidiary, I remember being quite difficult to find out. In addition, I think I could never find out who SITEV really where - there's a Mexican administration company with that name, but I don't believe the logo matches. Of course, companies change logos throughout the years, making lineage even harder to trace... :|

Some of the sponsors were actually incredibly difficult to find, sometimes impossible: the Augros, Parfums Victor, Courtaulds and Micromax are fabricated using fonts I had to hand based on images from the 1985 season. Others (Candy, Melinex, Denim) were copied from decal sheets of models of the cars.

The Samson logo was only found after I worked on the Lola and found it on the rear wing. By chance, I noticed the logo looked like the Samsonite one and so I just took the 'ite' bit off the logo to make it. It also so happens to be owned by Beatrice Foods- you can really see how they went under by the end of the '80's considering the number of acquisitions they made...

Round 1 - Brazilian Grand Prix, Jacarepaguá, 7th April 1985

Qualifying Results:
For 1985, our electronic, computer-based TAG Heuer timing system can display the speed of each car as they pass through a circuit's 'speed trap' - a measuring point placed in such a location as to 'capture' the car when it is travelling through the quickest straight-line part of the circuit. This 'trap speed' is presented, in green font, on the extreme right of each car's readout, for qualifying sessions only.

Only insiders deep enough in the paddock to have seen the car's pre-season rankings could have predicted such a dominant front-and-a-half row lockout by the Scuderia. Somewhat surprisingly, it was Pironi who was quickest, and he simultaenously dispelled any notion among the motoring press that he was not ready for a full-time Formula One return. John Watson - now old enough to call himself a 'veteran' - demonstrated he was worth every penny of the Brabham team's enourmous budget by out-qualifying team-mate Mansell, and Williams looked to be in much more competitive shape than last season, with Bellof qualifying fifth on the grid.

Surprises included Nannini's Alfa-powered Arrows starting eighth, and the Minardis, who were easily in the top fifteen. Irishman Derek Daly (somehow) outqualified both the Tyrrells in the only RAM car. The official BMW team were slightly embarassed to be shown-up by their semi-works customer team Williams, and likewise, Teo Fabi in the Osella-Alfa junior team would start ahead of both works Alfa Romeo cars.

Race Results:
Didier Pironi's first win, since the Dutch Grand Prix of 1982, was surely a wonderful way to open the 1985 season. Ex-Toleman driver Ayrton Senna finished a solid second, and a nasty scrap for French honour between Jarier and Laffite took both of them through the field into third and fourth place, respectively. Rather troubling were the turbo failures for both Lotus', since no further development is available on their Renault engines for the rest of the season. Prost, who had taken the lead from Pironi by this point, crashed-out due to fluid left by Arnoux. Patrese picked-up the Italian Minardi team's first-ever point, while Eddie Cheever - who may already be regretting his patriotism-induced move from Tyrrell to Lola - finished over a minute behind Patrese.

(An introduction to...) D&T (Development & Test) Opportunities
Now that the first race of the season is over, the opportunity to perform D&T (Development & Test) opportunities is upon us!

I shan't copy the whole text of the main 'D&T (Development & Testing)' article, located at the start of the thread, here, but please refer to it for a complete list of D&T opportunities, and how the price of each subsequent D&T opportunity increases per team-entry size. If there is a need (or sufficient demand) for a D&T opportunity not listed below, let me know, and it can be added.

To utilise D&T opportunities, simply list what you'd like to do after each race. Here's an example of spending three D&T opportunities:

Arrows will spend one D&T on Mechanical grip, and the other on reliability. It seems as if, with a bit more luck (we are Arrows, though), we could get some big results with the A8 considering its apparent pace.

Spirit will spend both D&T opportunities on mechanical grip. We're aiming to qualify for multiple races this year.

Round 2 - Portugese Grand Prix, Estoril, 21st April 1985

Qualifying Results:
The season debut may not have gone the way he wanted, but Prost was determined to show he was the best in the field, with a superb pole position. Senna enjoyed a front-row start, thanks in no small part to a low-drag setup on his Williams. Both de Cesaris and Patrese made full use of their flat-twelve turbo engines, qualifying a superb third and seventh, respectively. For a team in only their second race weekend as supposed 'front runners', BMW put on a respectable display in qualifying, with the cars starting eleventh and twelfth; as in Kyalami, the Williams team were faster in a straight line despite using the same engines as the German works team. Noticably struggling were Piquet and Laffite in the McLarens, whos cars looked uncomfortable to drive, and were lacking for competitive horsepower.

Race Results:
Bad luck - or a lead foot - took Prost out of the lead for the second time, this season; teammate Pironi comfortably shouldered the burden of delighting the Tifosi with his second win in a row. Mid-race, Senna was passed by Pironi and could not keep pace with him, although he attempted to prove himself by building up almost a one-minute gap over teammate Bellof. With attrition ridding the track of the Brabhams and BMWs, the Arrows team grasped the opportunity to bring their red-and-white cars home in points positions. The straight-line speed of the Minardi-Ferrari combination was too quick for the under-developed McLaren piloted by an unhappy Piquet, and it awarded Patrese another point. Despite being well off the pace, Daly's RAM finished the race.

Prime Minister Thatcher lowers herself to her seat, as delicately as ever, despite the heated atmosphere. Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Heseltine, quickly rises - quicker than a man of his age most likely should be doing.

"Prime Minister, I thank you for your response but I must take exception to your desire to privatize a company of which forty million-pounds of taxpayer's money has been invested. Westland has a willing buyer, who's demands indicate he is looking out for the company's best interests." Muffled gaffaws and snorts can be distantly heard, from the opposition bench.

Mrs Thatcher feistily drops her papers on the large desk in front of her, and stands. "That forty million-pounds is money the taxpayers of every constituency in this House will never see again, unless effective private ownership of this company can be gotten, and I believe a merger with the most prosperous company in the relevant industry in the world is quite something, let me tell you. The demands placed upon the government from the consortium formed by Sir Alan Bristow are understandable given the precarious economy position of Westland, but I do not plan to write-off the debt owed by the company to the treasury at any point during my tenure in this position, nor will the Honourable Gentleman to my..." The Prime Minister turns her head one way, and then the other. "... to my left, here, Trade Secretary Tebbit."

The Defence Secretary is not yet finished; one might suggest the Prime Minister has underestimated the seriousness of the matter. "Well, I must say, I am surprised at the conduct of our leader. I do not believe the British people wish for more of our industry to be sold-off to the Americans, and I think it is extremely dishonest of the Prime Minister to attempt to discredit my stance on this issue simply to strengthen relations overseas or to give Baron Cuckney another favour."

"Order, or-" shouts Commons Speaker, Bernard Weatherhill, before being overpowered by chatter from the backbenches. "Order! I'm standing! I am stood!" The noise quickly dies down. "The Honourable Member for Henley has made a slur unbecoming of himself and the House; I implore you to retract and apologize for that last remark."

"Mr Speaker, I will not." Papers, and even the odd leather Filofax, begin to be waved about among the Tory assembly. "I have here-" Shouting overpowers Defense Secretary Heseltine, forcing him to start his sentence over again. "I have here, a signed affidavit from one 'Christopher Moncrieff', who has given evidence, here, that the office of the Prime Minister, under the order of Mrs Thatcher, herself, leaked the confidential information currently circulating in the press, in an attempt to discredit my desire to see the Westland Aircraft company remain a British-," he corrects himself, "-a European-owned manufacturer."
