Two of Italy's Motorsport Icons return home with more than just Pride on the line

With ten championships and more than one hundred wins between them in storied histories going back to the 1980s, BMS Scuderia Italia and Racing Team Solvalou have become icons within the Italian racing landscape. Through their success in the FIA GT Championship and Real Racing Roots Grand Prix respectively in years gone by, they've put themselves among the elite of racing. This weekend in Monza will be the first time these teams face off against each other on homesoil, and they find themselves in the spotlight for more than just that factoid.

The Ferrari Factory Team, Scuderia Italia, took over the head of the Driver's Championship with the victory at Paul Ricard by Evgeny Restov and 2013 World Champion James James Davies. The pair of former Ferrari F1 drivers, and where Davies won his World Championship, take a two point advantage into Monza over the lead car from RT Solvalou. Leading the charge for them is American Chris Winter and former Ferrari, now Calientic F1 third driver Einar Ármannsson in their Factory Lamborghini Murciealago R-GT. The quartet of drivers are a furthur eight points ahead of third place in the championship as they head to the Temple of Speed.

"We wouldn't have it any other way," was the reaction from Scuderia Italia Team Principal Guiseppe Luccini after being asked about the matter in an exclusive interview Thursday Afternoon at the circuit, "We love coming back to Monza to race, but knowing there is that much more up for grabs makes this weekend special."
The team from Bescia stumbled out of the gate in Brazil after getting the late call to take control of the Factory Ferrari 550s, surviving the late rainstorm that hit in Interlagos with a handful of points from both of their cars. But while the good fortune remained fleeting for their other car, the pair of former F1 Drivers have since set the world alight finishing on the podium in each race since Brazil, "They (Restov and Davies) are some of the best in the world. They have enormous faith in the car and each other, and that has spread to the rest of the team. We come home expecting nothing but the best from them, and that's how it should be when you are representing Ferrari.

Situated two hundred kilometeres to the South-West in Turin, Racing Team Solvalou find themselves firmly at the front of the pack, nearly twenty years since their last triumph in the RRR GP. Now under the watch of Marco Gilbert, grandson to the late Enki Gilbert, they are in their third year of being the Factory Lamborghini team and have hit the ground running in 2018.

"We've finished stronger than we started in this series the last two years, but this time everything has come together at the right time, from the onset. We can now focus on the championship and making our own legacy." Marco took over the team as a part of its major restructure following the 2009 Financial Crisis which saw the team move towards national racing in Italy before the team returned to the international stage in 2015, "It was trying times after the RRR GP went away and when we first returned to the world stage, but we came out of it stronger and we are showing that now with Chris (Winter) and Einar (Ármannsson)." The Factory Lamborghini squads head to Monza one of the favorites, even though this is only their sixth appearance at the Temple of Speed in the team's 30+ year history; their main competition in this appearance coming from another Italian favored son, "This kind of moment would have been something my grandfather would would live for: two titans of Italian racing coming home and being the main attraction. But he would have been all about the perfect race and nothing else. At a time like this there is a whole lot more to play for, and that is what makes this so much more special to everyone involved."

Aoi Group reveals first international affair

Following a press conference, high-perfomance cars manufacturer Aoi Group has revealed a part-time entry on the GT Super Series, marking the first appearence of the group in the international motorsport scene, following successful outings at ALMS since 2015.

The company has revealed that these are their first steps towards hopefully landing an entry on the FIA Endurance Challenge, of which the car concept remains in development and is expected to meet it's debut on 2020.

The team has had a prosperous history, building sportscars under the cooperation of various manufacturers, as well as building spare parts for street cars. The team sees their GTSS as a first step towards their entry into international racing. The team has backed off the possibility of entering GTSS under a in-house car, claiming that they want to still keep focus in their planned EC program, and any further investement elsewhere would delay progress. As a result, they have entered a Lamborghini Murcielago. The team is hoping that the GT team provides experience to the crew, and helps them gather data they could use for their racing teams.

Driving the car are ARWS driver Andrej Kremnicky and newbie Marie Alberta Luisa. Andrej Kremnicky has been hired as one of the development drivers for the team, alongside Yuji Ide and Takuma Sato, claiming that their experience will be valuable to the EC program. Luisa has been hired in the hope that she gains experience for her future EC debut.

The team will race at the Asian leg of the series.

Gaw: AM Unreliability "Unacceptable"

Aston Martin Racing team principal John Gaw has spoke out about the unreliability plaguing the Aston Martin DBR9s in the Rolex GT Super Series.

In the seven rounds of the championship so far, both of the Factory DBR9s, run by Team Falken Tire and Gulf Racing, have had four mechanical issues in their many races, including a pair of double-retirements in the recently completed North American swing.

"We have the pair to beat in Matteo (Rossi) and Roland (Davidson) but only two podium finishes to show for it. It's frustrating to see races turn out like this after everything looked super positive coming out of testing. But testing is one thing and racing is another, and we've been working on some fixes for the new issues."

Some of those fixes will be on the cars for the series's return to Europe at the Nürburgring to mark the unofficial second half of the season in August.

Kyalami: Take Two?

The second bid for the thirteenth slot on the 2019 Rolex GT Super Series has been unveiled at a press conference Sunday morning at the Nurburgring before the Round of Germany. Joining the Astana Motorpark is a bid from the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit, being spearheaded by circuit owner and owner of Porsche South Africa Toby Venter.

"We are ready for the return of high level racing in South Africa," said Kyalami Sales & Events Manager Alexandra Mayne in the press conference, "given previous circumstances we would be happy to have the GT Super Series be the premiere event for us."

Those previous circumstances being the controversial Kyalami 9 Hour Event that was run at the end of last year. It saw three teams that ran both in that endurance event and in the then named GTR WC lose their spot on the grid this year after not complying with series regulations. Adding to the problems is the fact that it is coming out that Kyalami was suppose to be the thirteenth race this year, but after the fallout between the organizing bodies in November the race would be mutually called off between the track and the GTSS. If it were to have happened, it would have taken place two weeks ago.

"As much as we are representing South Africa, we are also representing Porsche," said Toby Venter, "If we are to do something it will be done the right way. And if it is not, we will learn from those mistakes to make something better out of it. And that is something I think we can achieve working with the GT Super Series."

Tsuchigami no Kyojin Rise for GTSS Debut
Garage House Tsuchigami announced their part-time entrance into the Rolex GT Super Series, marking the company’s first-ever appearance in international competition.

The Japanese-based team intends to be a showcase of the partnerships and aftermarket developments by some of the country’s best tuners and suppliers. Founded in the early 80’s at the ‘frontier era’ of the Japanese tuning scene, the company has been at the forefront of the nation’s latest car modifying trends and performance technologies.

Team principal Haruna Tsukimura unveiled the team’s Saleen S7-R which will be for their appearances at the rounds of Japan and Malaysia. With ‘western’ cars becoming increasingly prevalent in the team’s native tuning scene, Tsuchigami no Kyojin’s investment into the American-built supercar is said to be a sign of changing times. “In the past, we would always stick to cars built by our countrymen, but in a tuning culture that is increasingly diverse and international, Garage House Tsuchigami must also evolve with the trends,” said Tsukimura.

Ai Tsukimura and Shouta Sakai will be the drivers for the #18 Tsuchigami Saleen in the two Asian-based rounds of the GT Super Series calendar. Tsukimura is an upcoming driver in the Super GT championship’s GT500 category, having taken a number of surprise podiums in her debut in 2017. Her partner Shouta Sakai on the other hand is new to professional wheel-to-wheel competition, with his main experience coming from top-level Time Attack events in Australia and Japan.

Despite the setback in the race, we are pleased with the results of the race. It gave us some fantanstic feedback which will very valuable not only for our part-time operation but for our bigger project. Luisa might have spun, but there is still room to improvement given her lack of experience in these beasts, and I am more than confident than once she gets the grips of it, she will become an exquisite driver.

Maserati MC12 GT1 Evo Launches in China

Maserati Squadre Clienti formally launched their updated MC12 GT1 before Free Practice 2 for the GT Super Series Round of China at the Zhuhai International Circuit.

Dubbed the MC12 GT1 Evo, the updated car features updated aerodynamics and suspension packages after the car struggled in its maiden year of competition in 2017 with Delacroix-Serrano Competition. Maserati withdrew Factory support for 2018 but allowed customers to run the three chassis that were made available; they have been run by RMR Motorsport and Fulcrum Racing in 2018 with limited success.

Maserati spent the year testing to develop the updated car, which now features compatibility with all tire manufactures currently available in the GT Super Series. This was at the core of the program with Maserati announcing that the MC12 GT1 Evo will be made available to customers only to start, with RMR and Fulcrum receiving the option to update their MC12s to the new specification.

"To start, there will be five cars available to customers," said Sales & Marketing Motorsport Manager for Maserati Roberto Bozzi, "the three that are being race in Zhuhai this weekend will be updated, the one we have on display in the paddock and one more currently in construction. There will be more made available in the upcoming seasons if there is demand for it."

Upon being asked about a potential return of a Factory effort, Bozzi's reply was, "...if the right time comes and the right opportunity arises, anything is possible."

Azerbaijan Awarded 13th Slot as 2019 Calendar is Finalized

At the 2018 GTSS State of the Series, it was announced that the city of Baku, Azerbaijan had been awarded the 13th Calendar Spot for the 2019 Rolex GT Super Series Season.

As a part of the announcement, the 2019 Calendar was unveiled, featuring only minor changes beyond the inclusion of the race in Baku.

"It's an exciting time for everyone involved in the series," said GTSS series commissioner Terrance Carter, "we have the opportunity to go somewhere which has never had racing before and this high of level and be the star attraction. The Azerbaijani government made a great business case for us to come to Baku and it is something that we are proud to say we will take them up on." Carter also confirmed that there were four unsuccessful bids for the thirteenth calendar slot; alongside the previously announced bids from parties in Kazakhstan and Kyalami, South Africa were bids for a second Chinese race that would've take place on streets of Shanghai and a bid for a race at the recently refurbished Mexico City circuit.

It is expected that the round at Baku will feature a different race format, to better accommodate the GT Super Series running at a Street Circuit for the first time, and to provide more on track action for local spectators to enjoy.
