Stewards' Report for the 2020 FIA South American Formula 4 Round of Curitiba

Race 1:
- 3 penalty points for the driver Pedro Garcia (#23) for causing an avoidable collision involving Caio Collet (#17).

Race 2:
- 3 penalty points for the driver Verania Andres (#1) for causing an avoidable collision involving Sergio da Silveira (#12);
- 3 penalty points for the driver Sergio da Silveira (#12) for causing an avoidable collision involving Verania Andres (#1);
- After reviewing video footage of the collision, the stewards decided to award both Sergio da Silveira (#12) and Verania Andres (#1) a 10 second penalty for the dangerous and reckless behavior shown by both drivers in their collision, with the latter turning too narrow into the corner without taking the presence of another car into account, and the former refusing to back off after the first collision and forcing Andres off the track. Therefore, Carla Wilkinson inherits the win of Race 2, while Verania Andres drops to P22.

Arsenio Godoy will hold a press day after yet another great performance at Curitiba.

Godoy has been clearly the fastest driver this season but consistency has hurt him, whereas da Silveira has been exceptionally consistent - a top ten finish in every race! Jiménez would have similar record if not for the retirement in the last race... All in all things are looking good for Ascensión, we'll probably have to move up to F3 Americas next season to accomodate for our drivers ;)

Ana Sofia Santana will go for a press day after her results in the last two race weekends propelled her to sixth.

Marco Martinez will undertake a simulator round to try and get his skill even higher so he could start thinking about finally getting that first career podium.

Arsenio Godoy - Press Day
Igor Fraga - Press Day
Ana Sofia Santana - Press Day

1-65: They come back with increased confidence, their performance on the race track benefits as a result;
66-100: They loathe every single moment there, and, as everyone knows, being press-shy doesn't quite help in motorsport...

Godoy - 20: He's one of the title contenders, and he shows it off the track as well. (+27)
Fraga - 73: "What a waste of time...should have gone testing instead". (-10)
Santana - 32: "Nice day...would have been better if Igor weren't hitting on me all the time" (+35)

Santiago Santana - Team Building
Jonas Zanetti - Team Building

1-65: Santana and Zanetti like being together and are able to pull up their bootstraps and improve their relationship with the other team members.
66-100: They spend all the time bitching around with useless complaints.

Santana - 85: "Am I supposed to sleep in THAT room with THAT moron?" (-2)
Zanetti - 32: "Don't understand what that fuss is all about. I mean, I've slept in worse places for most of my life!" (+36)

Marco Martinez - Simulator Round

1-65: Cascavel has no secrets for him anymore.
66-100: What do you mean by "this is not Gran Turismo"?

Martinez - 27: "Yay...easy peasy. Should score some points next week" (+20)

Louis Reid - A talk with the shrink:

1-80: Those things can sometimes pay off.
81-100: An utter incompetent shrink goes into great lengths about Louis' recurring gearbox issues.

Reid - 72: He'll be faster once he begins to solve his mommy issues (+7)

Mid-season test: Autodromo Internacional de Cascavel, 25-26 May

Post your testing plans according to this form:

Day 1:
Driver 1:
Task: Short runs/Long runs/Consistency/Driver evaluation
Load: Low/Medium/High
Driver 2:
Task: Short runs/Long runs/Consistency/Driver evaluation
Load: Low/Medium/High

Day 1:
Driver 1:
Task: Short runs/Long runs/Consistency/Driver evaluation
Load: Low/Medium/High
Driver 2:
Task: Short runs/Long runs/Consistency/Driver evaluation
Load: Low/Medium/High

The higher the load, the higher the achievable improvement, but the higher the probability for the test to backfire, due to the additional physical and mental strain on the driver. Of course, the "Load" part doesn't apply to the Driver Evaluation test, which may be used to evaluate rookies for the 2021 season.

Hernandez/Berta:

Andres: +4 qualifying grip, -14 RGR
Castillo: +23 race grip
Wilkinson: +14 race grip
Hermann: +56 qualifying grip

Ascension:

C.R.Jimenez: +36 race grip
Godoy: +34 race grip
Cagna: Forget it, he's a scrub. Stick with your guys ;)
Bogado: See Cagna.

Binetta:

Reid: +23 race grip
Fraga: -19 RGR

Carreras:

Zanetti: +27 race grip
S. Santana: +51 race grip

MV Juniores:
Collet: no improvement
Petecof: +11 race grip
Barrichello: He's somehow decent, but will never be a serious title contender. Not the kind of driver you're looking for.

Vitoria:

A.S. Santana: no improvement
Martinez: +18 qualifying grip, -44 RGR.

Bonus:

Felipe Ribeiro: differently from the scrubs some of you sent, the Brazilian karting ace may be the next big thing in his country's motorsport. He tested privately and fared way better than most experienced drivers - a safe bet for a 2021 seat.

Looks like the other teams didn't even bother sending their drivers to the test...

July 25 - Autodromo de Las Vizcachas - Race 1

One of the most exciting races in these two years of South American Formula 4, with Da Silveira out of contention due to a sub-par qualifying and Godoy, who was comfortably leading the race up until that point, forced to park his car due to the front suspensions failing on him. With the two main contenders out of the picture, it was Imelda Hermann and Carlos Ramon Jimenez fighting for the win, with the latter winning the race in one of the closest finishes in the series' history.

July 27 - Autodromo de Las Vizcachas - Race 1

Once again, Las Vizcachas proved home to some of the best racing we've ever seen in South American Formula 4. If, after an initial scrap with Petecof and Da Silveira, Fabricio Castillo came home a relatively unscathed winner, hell broke loose behind him. It actually looked like Da Silveira's day, with him fighting for the win and his teammate Juan José Diaz, holding back Jimenez and Godoy. While the former could move past him quite easily, Godoy actually spent most of the race in eighth behind Diaz. It was only after a small mistake by the Silver Line driver that Godoy was able to storm past him, catch the pack of Andres, Petecof and Santana and actually manage to overtake those three drivers in the space of one corner. While Santana had to pull back into the pits with a throttle issue, the Paraguayan duo went on to successfully chase Da Silveira, with Godoy only barely edging him at the finish line.

August 8 - Bahia Blanca Airbase - Race 1

Not as exciting as the races in Chile, but the championship fight gets even closer. With a late-race move on polesitter Pedro Garcia on the lead, Arsenio Godoy clinches the championship lead with a two-points advantage over Sergio da Silveira. With his fourth-place finish, Jimenez can gain some ground as well. Right outside of the points, Imelda Herrmann will rack some penalty points due to a first-lap collision with O'Donnel, which put both of them out of contention for the points-paying positions.

This can't be true! In an otherwise uneventful race, Godoy's car fails on him again, this time with an electrical problem, allowing an otherwise disappointing Sergio da Silveira to get back onto the lead before the grand final in Buenos Aires. Da Silveira now has 4 points more than Godoy and a 9 points advantage over Jimenez.

September 11 - Autodromo Juan y Oscar Galvez - Race 1

The first race of the final goes to Sergio Da Silveira, in what is the second all-Brazilian podium of the season. Godoy and Jimenez are now 11 and 16 points behind respectively, having spent the whole race stuck behind Gianluca Petecof. It now really is Sergio's title to lose, but the double-points final could change everything...

September 12 - Autodromo Juan y Oscar Galvez - Race 2
Round 2 goes to Igor Fraga, but the actual winner, at least to some extent, is Arsenio Godoy. Godoy could have easily won the race by sheer pace, but Fraga was able to fend off all attacks by the Paraguayan. At least, Godoy was able to finish ahead of Da Silveira and reduce his gap to 9 points, while Jimenez has to (almost) say goodbye to his championship hopes, being now 21 points down. The double-points final will decide everything, but, again, it's Da Silveira's championship to lose.

With Da Silveira out of contention early on due to a mistake and engine problem, Godoy had a match ball for winning the championship - he only needed to finish in P6, or higher. But he couldn't. After remaining stuck behind Fraga for most of the race and getting caught into a couple of rage-induced mistakes, the Paraguayan only finished the race in P8, three points short of Da Silveira. So, looks like we've got the second Brazilian SAF4 champion in a row!

We'll be fine. It's Canon, non Kodak.

Wow that got close but what a choke by Godoy especially! Congrats to da Silveira, consistency was key this year as I think the Ascensión guys were generally faster but had more blimps in their performances.

The standings have been updated on the wiki.

Some interesting facts:

- The drivers who took the most advantage of the final round were Verania Andres, who jumped six positions ahead in the standings thanks to her second place in the double-length final, and Juan Jose Diaz, who had his first consistent weekend and gained four positions.
- Last year's rules foresaw two points for each fastest lap: this bonus was cancelled in order to comply with FIA-wide Formula 4 regulations. Had that rule stayed, Godoy would have clinched the title.
- Da Silveira won with 178 points and 5 wins on his belt. Exactly the same points and wins tally as last year's champion Raquel Rodriguez.
