Quicksim: Alternate F1 - The Revolutionary Era - 1993 Season

Post by Gertrand Bachot »

Same as last season although expanded to include a little more user involvement (as requested).

The Cars

The chassis will be mostly the same as they were in the real life season, with slight performance adjustments based on the previous performance of a team the season before, and to fit the narrative of the period. However I'll be giving team owners the option to choose engine supply for the season (with some exceptions for narrative purposes).

The Drivers

Before the start of each season, you are free to offer contracts for two driver slots. Unlike in previous seasons, you won't have any objectives to meet, although some drivers are locked into certain teams and there may be certain driver requirements imposed on certain teams (again for storyline purposes).

If multiple teams are bidding for a certain driver, RNG shall decide their fate, as usual.

The Teams

13 teams for 1993, 2 cars per team. These 15 teams have been determined by the needs of the canon and previous developments:

Canon Williams (Klon)
Tyrrell Racing Organisation (Ataxia)
Marlboro McLaren (TCBY)
Camel Benetton Arrows (kevinbotz)
Team Lotus (kinnikuniverse)
Sasol Jordan (Dom)
Footwork Team Oreca (Aislabie)
Larrousse Gitanes Blondes (salamander)
Scuderia Italia (Miguel98)
Minardi Team (pinkd56)
Scuderia Ferrari (GB)
Team Sauber F1 (TBA)
Rial Racing (SeedStriker)

The Race Weekend

305 km except Monaco, you all know how a Formula One race works.

The Points System

10-6-4-3-2-1 for the time being.

The Race Calendar

On the wiki.

If this is all automated, what do I do?

You pick the drivers and engines, hope for the best and if you wish, you may change the lineup by replacing a driver with a driver picked from one of my suggestions if you can provide a good justification.

I'm much more active on the Discord so you can hit me up over there if you want me to do anything for you (within reason of course).

At the minute, I need existing team owners to confirm their teams. You have one week (until the 20th August 2021) to do this.

Since my team from 1992 is ded, I'd be willing to take any team that goes unclaimed by the end of this, but only if necessary.

Jordan will return in 1993 after getting into a decent enough financial position to buy back the constructor naming rights from Venturi.

Bid Time

Post by Gertrand Bachot »

Okay, given it’s been a month I think it’s appropriate to move onto the next phase.

Slightly different to how it was run before but now there’s a bit more freedom from the perspective of the user.

You can now bid for drivers freely without the goals system in place last year. However note that a few teams have a driver locked in, as well as some engines requiring certain drivers to be hired in some capacity.

You can also choose engine suppliers for the year. Also bear in mind that some teams have engines locked in, and certain engine suppliers will have team preferences or will refuse to work with certain teams, as well as the aforementioned driver requests. If there are multiple bids for engines, I will leave it in the hands of RNG to decide who gets what.

So, here’s a list of engines that you can choose for 1993 (all suppliers can only supply 1 team unless otherwise stated):
Yamaha (will not supply Jordan)
Mugen-Honda (team receiving engines must employ Kazuki Fushida)
Hart
Lamborghini
Ferrari (1992-spec) (will not supply Scuderia Italia)
Renault (would prefer to work with Larrousse)
Ilmor (1992-spec)
Ford Cosworth (1992-spec) (can supply 2 teams)
Ford Cosworth (1991-spec) (unlimited supply)

Entries (as well as teams and drivers locked in) can be found on the wiki.

Post your bids in this format:

Code: Select all

A few race reports

Post by Gertrand Bachot »

This series has admittedly been a little lacklustre as of late, so this post is here to try and spring things back up a little.

South African Grand Prix
Qualifying
Image

Race
Image

DOTR: Eddie Irvine - points on debut for a team that badly needed them after a horrendous 1992 is definitely a good way to get your F1 career started.
ROTR: Ford - having three engines fail at the first race of the year is hardly a good look.

If the first race of 1993 is anything to go by, then it seems it'll mostly be a repeat of 1992. The Williams cars remain as dominant as ever, new signing Dagnall seems to have slotted into the team nicely, securing a hattrick to start his Williams career off. Teammate Christopherson seemed to be relatively dejected at having to seemingly play second fiddle for the second year in the running - an attitude exemplified by his fairly grumpy demeanour on the podium. Canadian Paul Tracy did well on debut, almost snatching second off of Christopherson in the end stages of the race. Elsewhere on the grid, the new Sauber team seemed to have done relatively well, being a solid midfield contender - meanwhile Scuderia Italia have alarmingly collapsed down the grid - going from best of the rest in 1992 to bottom feeders this year.

Brazilian Grand Prix
Qualifying
Image

Race
Image

DOTR: Johnny Herbert - first points for Larrousse being the only standout in an otherwise mediocre race.
ROTR: Jordan - a collapse in form after their relatively strong start in South Africa.

Paul Tracy is clearly keen to establish himself as one of the new frontrunners in Formula One. The Canadian leapfrogged Christopherson at the start and was right up there with eventual winner Dagnall, challenging him right up until the last laps, where he had to settle down for second. Teammate Schumacher had a fairly quiet race in 4th, picking Arrows up some decent points from today. Larrousse's Johnny Herbert did fairly well today, beating the McLaren of Mika Hakkinen into the final points paying position.

Fastest Lap - Jack Christopherson, 1:49.995

DOTR: Heinz-Harald Frentzen - braved the torrential conditions to score Sauber's first points.
ROTR: Jean-Marie Balestre - poor decision making.

The Pacific Grand Prix was a total washout. With the rain falling all weekend being among the heaviest in F1 history, many expected a repeat of events such as Australia in 1991 where the race was stopped prematurely. However, FIA President Jean-Marie Balestre was bullish and refused to sanction anything other than a full length race, generating criticism towards the Frenchman for exhibiting a poor attitude towards safety.

In qualifying, Michael Schumacher braved the conditions to start from pole, with hopes the young German could benefit from the wet conditions to score his second grand prix victory. He started well, but at Turn 1 a fast-starting Hakkinen collided into him and ended his afternoon. The big story of Sunday was spinning - many drivers lost control of their cars as a result of the terrible weather - particularly at Turn 16. The worst accident of the race was when Didier Artzet lost control of his car on Turn 15, and was stopped on the racing line facing the wrong way. The Frenchman drove the wrong way down the track and continued directly into the path of Martin Donnelly and collided head-on with him. Miraculously, neither Donnelly or Artzet were hurt but the Ulsterman had less than charitable words towards the Larrousse driver for his antics. After spinning out of the race shortly afterwards, Rubens Barrichello opted to stop his car and get out as a form of protest towards the way the race was being run.

Ultimately though, as the race was stopped on Lap 61 due to hitting the 2-hour time limit, the end result was a depressingly mediocre Williams 1-2. This time though Christopherson came out on top of Dagnall, suggesting he's less willing to merely sit back and let Dagnall romp off with the title as Alain Prost did last year. Frédéric-Maxime Voeckler secured Ferrari's first podium since 1991, although was utterly anonymous during the race. Elsewhere, Neil McEwan came heartbreakingly close to his first career points, being unable to finish much higher than 7th.

San Marino Grand Prix
Qualifying

Race

DOTR: Michael Schumacher - clean battles with both his teammate and Christopherson paid off handsomely with a second career victory.
ROTR: Jean Alesi - over half a second off the pace of his teammate in qualifying and then clumsily clatters the outside kerb at Piratella to take himself out of the race.

The early stages of this race were a fairly done deal, with Chris Dagnall romping off in the lead after taking pole with teammate Christopherson taking a spaced out 2nd. The two Arrows cars battled for a good while but Schumacher came out on top and distanced himself from Tracy. There was also a brief battle between the Ferrari of Voeckler and the McLaren of Hakkinen for 5th, the MP4-8 able to hang on in the corners but the superior horsepower of the Ferrari V12 ultimately won out. There were a few midfield scuffles, the most spectacular being Alesi's aforementioned accident.

Then it all changed. Chris Dagnall, having dominated proceedings again, suffered an engine failure. The Brit was left utterly distraught, walking back to the pits with indignation and sorrow. This meant Christopherson had a free hand at victory, but it was not to be. He spun at Tosa, allowing Schumacher to close right in, with the Arrows driver leapfrogging ahead in the pitstop phase. Christopherson went back on the attack, however Schumacher defended hard, not allowing the Williams any chance to overtake him. This went on for several laps, the two pounding at one another round the narrow and twisty bends of Imola, before Christopherson seemingly gave up and fell back, ending up just over three seconds behind the German at the chequered flag.

Behind them Tracy took a distant 3rd, with some midfield celebration as it was the first points finishes for both Didier Artzet and Rubens Barrichello, the Larrousse and Lotus finishing 4th and 5th respectively. Eddie Irvine, back in the Jordan after missing the Pacific Grand Prix due to other commitments elsewhere, took another point in 6th.

Mixed feelings on the podium as Schumacher celebrated with energy and fervour with teammate Tracy, with Christopherson seeming rather downtrodden, again pondering on what could have been...

Oreca team principal Hugues de Chaunac was quoted telling the Formula One media that he was "very happy" with the performances of rookie driver Neil McEwan.

McEwan, a graduate of British Formula Three, British Formula 3000 and International 3000 over the course of his seven-year career before reaching Formula One, was still an obscure name to those not part of the UK single-seater scene. However, his results have compared favourably to the team's two-year veteran driver Sophie Fabron in the first four races of the season - McEwan finishing as high as seventh at Autopolis, while Fabron's best effort was fifteenth last time out at Imola.

These early performances certainly suggest that he could have a strong future in the sport, perhaps at better teams than the struggling Oreca.

Spanish Grand Prix
Qualifying
Image

Race
Image

DOTR: Paul Tracy - he drove brilliantly all race, a deserved first victory...
ROTR: Arrows - having both cars suffer engine failures with 6 laps to go at the exact same time is just comically bad, especially when one had dominated the race up until that point. Props to Schumacher for spinning twice in the race too.

Qualifying was fairly standard this weekend, another Dagnall pole. Paul Tracy placed his Arrows car in second, having put together a very good lap on Saturday. Teammate Schumacher found himself outqualified by the McLaren of Hakkinen.

When the lights went out Dagnall and Tracy headed off out front, battling for the lead. After a few laps Tracy got past the Williams into Turn 4 and gapped himself to about 4 seconds ahead. When the two came into lapped traffic this gap would be roughly maintained despite some slight fluctuation. After the first pitstop phase however, the course of the race would change. Dagnall spun off at Turn 4 and by the time he recovered from it he was left in 4th - this left the Canadian to have a clear run in the race lead.

In the second pitstop phase it seemed as though Schumacher would leapfrog the other Williams of Christopherson to give Arrows a 1-2, however the German had other ideas. He spun off at the final corner entering what was his final lap before his pitstop, meaning he lost out to both Williams cars and the McLaren of Hakkinen. He would spin again at Turn 12 adding to his woes. As Lap 59 was due to begin the race seemed to be set for a Paul Tracy victory, the Canadian being over a minute clear of both the Williams cars...

...but the racing gods, as it transpired, had other ideas. As Tracy passed the start-finish straight, smoke began to start pouring out of the back of the Arrows car, which a few corners later would erupt into outright flames. At the same time as Tracy's car caught fire, Schumacher's car also caught fire, meaning both Arrows cars would be out on the spot. This meant that, completely undeservedly, Dagnall would come across the line to take victory with Christopherson in 2nd. Mika Hakkinen was somewhat pleased, having acquired his first podium for McLaren, and Jean Alesi got his first points of the year, albeit his engine packed up on the final lap. Mika Salo got his first points, but there was celebration further down the grid as on Lap 60, Didier Artzet spun out of P6 at Turn 2, meaning Bernd Schneider would score Rial their first points of the season.

And following the surprisingly strong performances of Rial at the Spanish Grand Prix in particular, there was some talk in the paddock of them selling their in-house power units to customers in the 1994 season. No sources within the Rial organisation were available for comment.

Regardless, Schneider's miracle point will go down in F1 folklore as one of its greatest modern underdog stories, while Karl Wendlinger - who was just as pacy - will be ruing his luck yet again.

According to an insider of the team, the British dream team of Chris Dagnall and Jack Christopherson assembled by Williams is showing cracks and may not last beyond the 1993 season. The source points towards two issues: qualifying and an incident following the San Marino Grand Prix.

Christopherson feels that his team is preferring Dagnall on Friday and Saturday, as timing between the teammates' departure from the pitlane left the former dealing with traffic more often. As if in response, Dagnall reportedly mocked his teammate's inability to pass Michael Schumacher for the win at Imola.

Former Formula One driver Alain Prost has announced his plans to become a Formula One team owner in an interview with a French radio program. "It is a goal of mine," he stated bluntly when asked about being a team manager.

Rumours in the paddock report that a number of teams may be up for sale given the massive increase in costs caused by the newest technical developments such as active suspensions, anti-lock brakes, pneumatic engine valve springs and push-to-pass systems.

The Arrows team were initially jubilant after the Monaco Grand Prix, Canadian driver Paul Tracy in particular taking his first Formula One victory, with teammate Michael Schumacher in third place giving the team a double podium, a delight in comparison to a difficult Spanish Grand Prix, where both cars had their engines expire a few laps before the end of the race.

However, it became clear that all was not well. At scrutineering, the stewards noticed that the cars were under the legal weight limit. This meant that the team were disqualified from the race and lost the valuable 14 points they felt they had earned so fruitfully. Furious, the terrible trio of Flavio Briatore, Tom Walkinshaw and Jackie Oliver stormed towards FIA President Jean-Marie Balestre's office, demanding he overturn the disqualification.

Balestre did not take kindly to their disagreement. Instead, the Frenchman put the hammer down, doubled down on the disqualification and decreed that the Arrows team were to be excluded from participating in the following race, the Canadian Grand Prix, claiming "new evidence" had come to light in regards to the car's illegality. Opportunistic Oreca seized the opportunity to try and lodge another protest to the team, but Balestre waived their protest away with decisive dismissance.

The decision is likely to further increase the dominance of the Williams team, already nearly 60 points clear of their next furthest competitor in the World Constructor's Championship.

When the sun rose on Friday morning for the Canadian Grand Prix, all was well in the paddock - except for Didier Artzet's stomach, which grumbled more than usual. One quick perusal through the 1-ply later, and Larrouse were informed they'd be out of a driver for the Grand Prix.

With usual test drivers Silvio Bachot and Olivier Grouillard pre-occupied, F3000 driver Beau Brandenburg stepped in for the remainder of the Grand Prix weekend.

The Irish News wrote:Ulster Driver Rivalry Heats Up
As the 1993 Formula One season progresses on, much has been made of the various shenanigans up front. However it seems that at the home team of Jordan, tension is similarly building up. Establishment driver Martin Donnelly, who has been at the team since its founding in 1991, is considered to generally be the team's lead driver. However, this season, rookie Eddie Irvine has been outshining him, the Newtownards native beating out the Belfast blood by taking two fine points finishes at the South African and Brazilian Grand Prix while his teammate has struggled to match the same level of racing output. Donnelly has allegedly met with team principal Eddie Jordan and offered him an ultimatum for 1994, suggesting that Dublin don would have to choose between him and Irvine to drive for the team for next season. While Irvine has been driving a part-time schedule and has made way for Teo Fabi at the Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix, he is back in the car for the Canadian Grand Prix. It will be interesting to see if further tensions will arise between the two as the season progresses.

National Post wrote:Tracy finally speaks out over Monte Carlo craze
Paul Tracy almost became a national hero with his well-earned victory on the streets of Monte Carlo yesterday, but FIA President Jean-Marie Balestre had other ideas, stripping him of his victory after his Arrows team was deemed to have committed technical violations, and went one step further when responding to the team's appeal, opted to ban them from the Canadian Grand Prix in three weeks time, meaning Tracy would miss the opportunity to reclaim victory on home turf.

"[Balestre] is such a clown", Tracy said in an interview. "He doesn't have any respect for anyone but himself. He just struts around like a chicken, as if he's important, when he's just a worthless weazel. His decisions are always unfair and full of trash, frankly he's ruining the sport."

"It's just such a shame when we have such a good package, we could take the challenge to Williams but this French fool won't let us. It's almost as if he wants them to dominate this season..."

Tracy's exclusion from the race at Montreal has allegedly led to a large number of ticket cancellations, with TSN also reporting that they are expecting a significantly lower number of viewer figures for the race after the Monaco Grand Prix reached a record high.

J.O.U.R.N.A.L. wrote:Williams to Boycott Canadian Grand Prix

In a statement to the world press, Sir Frank Williams announced his support towards Benetton and declared his intent to boycott the Canadian Grand Prix unless either all penalties towards the Benetton team are voided or the team is "financially compensated for the extremely harsh punishment":

"We understand the difficult situation the FIA presidency is in, but it is clear to us that this is disproportionate. Punishing a team for filing an appeal is unheard of and threatens the integrity of the sport," Williams said, "and so we are left with little option but to take decisive measures."

Cynics have noted that Williams would believe a boycott to be convenient: the technical marshal for the Canadian Grand Prix is rumored to be a strong opponent of electrical driving aids as seen on the Williams. The drivers were not available for comment, but friends of Chris Dagnall have stated that Dagnall is happy with a boycott as it would slow down the momentum of his teammate who has tied the championship with the inherited win at Monaco.

Generic French Publication, but in English wrote:Oreca to race in Canada, express sympathy for Arrows drivers

Despite the scandalous disqualification of Benetton Arrows from the Monaco Grand Prix, and subsequent withdrawal of Championship rivals Williams from the Canada, Footwork Team Oreca expressed no sympathy for the team's plight - though Team Principal Hugues de Chaunac did say that he felt "sorry for the drivers caught up in this mess."

"They [Tracy and Schumacher] have been let down by their team. We always make sure that our cars comply with the regulations, and our drivers know they can rely on us for that."

Image
Paul Tracy had celebrated a victory at the Monaco Grand Prix only to be disqualified later.

De Chaunac also questioned the very identity of the team in question; "The team has been breaking regulations ever since 1991. We are allowed only one title sponsor, and there are quite clearly two in the 'Camel Benetton Arrows'."

It has long been unclear whether Benetton Arrows should be counted as a title sponsorship; the "Arrows" name has remained as the official constructor, and the remains of the original Benetton team were purchased by Oreca, which would suggest that the Team Principal in question knows what he's talking about.

Furthermore, the Benetton family has previously said that they "chose to sponsor" the Arrows team in 1990 due to their Ford engine supply. The addition of a Camel title sponsorship to the Benetton Arrows name is one that has passed without sanction from the FIA, who reportedly justified their inaction because "the Benetton name in Benetton Arrows refers to the team being owned by the Benetton family, and not the Benetton shops which are owned by the Benetton family."

Regardless, Sophie Fabron and Neil McEwan can look forward to the Canadian Grand Prix as an unusually good opportunity to score points, as the 26-car grid is trimmed to no more than 22, and may fall still further if any other teams choose to show solidarity with Williams and Arrows against the embattled FIA president.

Autosport wrote:Walkinshaw: Balestre "disappointing", Williams "an exemplar of sportsmanship"

A clearly incandescent Tom Walkinshaw just barely restrained himself from unleashing a deluge of vituperation against the FIA and its president, Jean-Marie Balestre, while performing media rounds today.

"It's disappointing," fumed Walkinshaw. "He, specifically, is disappointing. Apparently, that's the full extent that I'm allowed to express my 'disappointment' that apparently won't expose my team, my drivers, and the hundreds of hardworking, dedicated men and women who regularly shed blood, sweat, and tears for the love of our sport to further extrajudicial punishment - according to our lawyers. Aye, he's a 'disappointing' piece of work, that man. No, I won't specify who 'he' is. I just think it's tragic that one individual can so pervert the integrity of the sport on such shaky, if not non-existent, grounds. And I feel enormously badly for Paul, who's been nothing but the consummate professional and deserved better from this sport. Who's 'he', again? Bonnie Prince Charles."

"Oreca? Oreca's hilarious. They say Formula One's a club of piranhas, but these puffed-up amateurs don't realise that there's a finesse to the game. Just to put the matter to rest, once and for all, the Benetton Group purchased a pretty hefty stake in Arrows back in 1989, and merged Benetton Formula - all of it, IP, personnel, facilities - with the Arrows organisation. Benetton's not a sponsor - it's a part of us. To come back to Oreca, you'd think the fact that they're French would at least give them a hearing with the Big Man - but, no, they're so insignificant that they couldn't even manage that. And I don't think that they've realised that piranhas bite back - they've put a target on their back for nothing."

"As for Sir Frank, I don't have enough words to express my admiration for the man. Inspiration, a true racing great, and an exemplar of sportsmanship. He didn't need to do this, and I wouldn't have begrudged him one bit if he hadn't, but he decided to stand up for what's right and true. As it stands, I can only express my utmost gratitude and appreciation."
