So, RNGs have been run: riders, crew chiefs and updated budgets can be seen in the spreadsheet.

The lineups are quite wild, I have to say.

Before we can move on with the season preview:

- WithU LCR Racing Ducati (Bleu) needs to sign a rider.
- Pramac Racing Honda (kevinbotz) needs to sign a crew chief for Takaaki Nakagami.
- Lenovo Esponsorama Racing Yamaha (Ataxia) needs to sign a crew chief for Remy Gardner.

At this stage, just pick your choice from the free agents: they'll be glad to sign for the base wage :)

Management shakeup at Repsol Honda as Puig fired
Senior management at Honda has decided to draw consequences from the manufacturer’s disappointing 2020 MotoGP season, with a significant shakeup expected to happen at upper levels of management. As Speedweek sources confirm, Repsol Honda team principal Alberto Puig is set to be the first head rolling after the Honda works team failed to win a race for the first time since the 2004 season. Puig garnered controversy throughout the season with his statements about Marc Marquez‘injury diminishing the value of the 2020 championship, statements for which he was heavily criticized across the paddock.

Surprise switch to bikes: Monisha Kaltenborn new team principal at Repsol Honda
After the firing of previous team boss Alberto Puig, the Repsol Honda Team has gone into radio silence for three weeks, with the rumor mill going on about who Puig’s replacement at the helm of the Honda works team will be. Various names were suggested, including Livio Suppo’s return to the post he left at the end of 2017 (a choice Marc and Alex Marquez were rumored to be rooting for), and the appointment of former BMW Motorsport boss Mike Krack. At the end, Motorsport.com sources can confirm, Honda management has chosen former Sauber F1 team principal Monisha Kaltenborn. The Swiss manager has been keeping a low profile since the end of her Sauber stint, but is said to be eager to return into the motorsport arena, albeit on two wheels.

Gresini and Aprilia part ways, Aprilia to field own works team
Throughout the 2020 season, rumours of a rift between Gresini Racing management and Aprilia were gaining steam, as the seasoned outfit was said to be growing disappointed of the lack of financial and technical support from Noale. While original plans were for Aprilia to field a works team starting in 2022, Piaggio Group has announced in a press release that Aprilia Racing will be making their return as an independent works team from the 2021 season. As a Gresini Racing spokesperson confirmed to Speedweek, Gresini Racing will keep competing in MotoGP, albeit as a customer team. It is currently unknown which bikes the Italian team will field, with Honda rumored to be up in the pecking order.

LCR-Ducati, Pramac-Honda? What‘s behind MotoGP’s latest crazy rumor
Over the last races of 2020, some voices have been suggesting of troubles brewing in the long-standing relationship between Ducati and Pramac Racing, with controversy surging around the works team trying to poach Francesco Bagnaia for themselves. Bagnaia is under contract to Ducati, but sources in the paddock confirm that there was an agreement in place with Bagnaia being set to continue at Pramac troughout 2021. After Andrea Dovizioso decided to take a sabbatical at the end of 2020, Ducati backtracked on their previous agreement. They are now looking set to announce Pecco Bagnaia as Dovizioso’s replacement.

This breach of a gentlemen’s agreement is said to be the straw breaking the camel’s back in the relationship between manufacturer and customer, with Pramac Racing management already in talks with Honda for a batch of RC213Vs. This, on the other hand, would lead to Ducati looking elsewhere for a „privileged customer“: with Esponsorama being in rough waters and unsure of their slot on the grid beyond 2021, Ducati’s choice might have fallen on LCR, and Lucio Cecchinello himself has been allegedly spotted at the Ducati headquarters in Borgo Panigale.

Honda, Pramac, Gresini agree to 'stabilisation' package, closer factory-customer ties

The team principals of Repsol Honda, Pramac Racing, and Enel Gresini Racing announced, in a joint press conference today, the creation of a joint development fund and closer technical collaboration between the three teams. This move comes after a turbulent off-season for the Japanese giant, including a major administrative error that resulted in both the payment of substantial compensatory damages to Alex Marquez and the shock defection of Marc Marquez to Suzuki, and worryingly underwhelming times in pre-season testing.

The fund is believed to be considerable, and the move is understood to reflect the deep underlying concerns of all parties involved. Continued...

Pramac and Gresini agree to create a €6,000,000 emergency fund for Honda to use at its discretion for bike upgrades, with both teams allocating €3,000,000 each to finance the fund. The following conditions are attached to the usage of the fund, and associated compensation:

1. If the fund remains unused for the duration of the season, the allocated money will be released back to Pramac and Gresini at the end of the season; Pramac and Gresini will also each receive €800,000 discounts on Honda factory bike prices for the 2022 season, with no conditions attached.

2. If the fund is used in any capacity, Pramac and Gresini will receive Honda factory bikes at no cost for the 2022 season, as long as each team signs a rider under the age of 26.

Raul Romero’s Esponsorama ensures Yamaha deal and a huge sponsorship
Despite talks of Raul Romero’s Esponsorama team winding down their MotoGP operations after Avintia Group announced they would stop their sponsorship, the Spanish outfit seem to have struck gold, with two unexpected news announced over the course of one day. Yamaha, after having struggled with bike development throughout the last season, have chosen to sign the Spanish team as their second customer alongside Petronas SRT. Another press release by the team also announced that Lenovo would become the team’s title sponsor, with the Chinese electronic stalwart ending their relationship with Ducati. The value of the deal is rumored to be close to 10 million Euros, a cash injection direly needed by the fledgling outfit.

Red Bull reducing KTM MotoGP involvement, Tech3 partnership in danger
KTM’s latest press release stated that Red Bull would continue their “long-standing partnership with the Red Bull KTM MotoGP team, as well as with Red Bull KTM Ajo in the Moto2 and Moto3 classes”. What is curious is the fact that no mentions were made of KTM Tech 3, which had also been sponsored by the Austrian energy drink giant throughout the 2020 season. Some internal sources state that Red Bull is trying to focus their efforts on their Formula 1 operations and are looking to cut back on other endeavors, thus currently leaving Hervé Poncharal’s team without a title sponsor. Following the loss of the Red Bull backing, the French operations is left with two options, with experts speculating that the team might either ask KTM to foot part of their bills or end their partnership with the Austrian manufacturer altogether. Should the latter be the case, Suzuki is said to be open to welcoming their first customer since rejoining MotoGP, and preliminary talks are already being held.

Gresini Racing future safe as Italian outfit set to become Honda’s farm team
After the abrupt breakup of their works team relationship to Aprilia, Gresini Racing was rumored to be in a financially shaky situation, with an end of their MotoGP operation also being on the cards. This danger has been now averted as, sources close to the team have stated to Motorsport.com, the Italian outfit is set to rekindle their decade-long relationship to Honda. It is speculated that Honda’s new management have been looking for a “junior team” akin to what Tech3 has been to KTM over the last couple of seasons, with Gresini set to become a privileged destination for young Honda-linked riders. With their previous riders having been directly under contract to Aprilia, the team is set to field an all-new rider pairing, with some sources suggesting 2020 Moto3 vice-champion Ai Ogura might make the double-jump to MotoGP.

Fabio Quartararo joins Ducati, Morbidelli to partner Vinales at Yamaha
In what some have considered a shock move, Huski Chocolate Ducati Racing has announced the signing of three-time MotoGP race winner Fabio Quartararo on a record-breaking 20.000.000€ deal. After Ducati’s announcement on Monday, Mission Winnow Yamaha Racing confirmed on the same afternoon that 2020 vice-champion Franco Morbidelli would step up to the works team and replace his mentor Valentino Rossi. While Quartararo was initially expected to join Maverick Vinales at Yamaha, the relationship between the Frenchman and the Iwata marque had apparently soured over the latter half of the 2020 season. A string of lackluster performances over the last races let the once-championship contender slip down to eighth place in the rider’s championship, while Morbidelli was able to push his A-spec bike up to second place in the standings.

Monisha’s indecent proposal for Valentino’s last dance at Honda
Nine-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi has not made a mystery of his disappointment at Yamaha, after the Italian had been made to step aside from the works team to make place for his own protégé Franco Morbidelli. Currently, Rossi is set to begin what might be his last MotoGP season at Petronas SRT, but Alberto Puig’s ousting has opened an unexpected way out of Iwata for the Doctor. In fact, some sources have stated that newly-appointed Repsol Honda team principal Monisha Kaltenborn might have offered Rossi a one-year contract. With contradictory reports about Marc Marquez’return to form before the 2021 season, the nine-time champion might be a safe bet for another shot at race wins after a disappointing 2020. Many in the team are said to look favorably at this suggestion, but the entourage of the Marquez brothers would apparently not be thrilled with the possibility of the two “enemies” sharing a garage.

Suzuki-Tech 3 a done deal, KTM going customer-less for 2021
In two updates on their Twitter account, Hervé Poncharal’s Tech3 team announced title sponsorship from fuel supplier Elf and, most importantly, confirmed the team’s rumored switch to Suzuki machinery. Tech3 will be Suzuki’s first-ever MotoGP customer, as the French outfit ends a two-year spell with KTM bikes which saw Miguel Oliveira clench the team’s first-ever MotoGP victory. As sources close to Motorsport.com have confirmed, the lack of Red Bull backing from 2021 onwards has played a significant role in their decision, as Suzuki offered a more convenient, and competitive package and apparently facilitated the Elf sponsorship deal.

As more and more bike deals are being finalized for 2021, it looks increasingly likely that KTM will be left without any customer teams. “At the current stage, we will field no customer bikes for the 2021 season”, KTM motorsport boss Pit Beirer confirmed to Motorsport.com. “It’s not what we had hoped for, of course, but this will enable us to redirect our resources towards the works team. We want to keep our race-winning form, and are confident we can meet our goals”.

Marquez eyeing Suzuki deal as shock Rossi-Honda switch confirmed
Two numbers and four letters were everything the Repsol Honda team needed to confirm the biggest story of the 2021 off-season: “46 BACK” was everything visitors to the team’s website were able to see, as the 42-year old Italian is making a shock return to the Honda works team after seventeen years spent between Yamaha and Ducati. The Doctor has signed under the dotted line for a one-year deal, looking set to gun for what would be his 200th World Championship podium at Honda. The Rossi deal has been a major goal of Repsol Honda’s new management under Monisha Kaltenborn, with the goal of increasing fan exposure and sponsorhip revenue – a dire necessity for the team as the future of their long-time Spanish title sponsor is looking increasingly uncertain.

The Marquez side of the garage are reported to be everything but thrilled by the deal, with 8-time World Champion Marc Marquez allegedly ready to trigger a clause in his contract which would let him leave Honda should the team sign a former multiple World Champion. This clause had been dubbed “the Rossi clause” by sources in the Marquez entourage, and had been put in place by Marc’s manager to ensure the Spaniard’s number one spot in the team. Should Marquez decide to leave, Suzuki is thought to be the only sensible choice, as the Ducati and Yamaha works teams have already announced their rider lineup and are set to put their faith into the hands of Fabio Quartararo and Maverick Vinales respectively.

World Champion Mir set for Honda move as Alex Marquez’ fate uncertain
With 8-time World Champion Marc Marquez all but set to join Suzuki for the 2021 season, Honda is left looking for a lead rider to partner Valentino Rossi at the works Repsol team. The choice seems to have fallen on Joan Mir, with the reigning World Champion allegedly keen on bringing his #1 nameplate to the Tokyo manufacturer. The Honda move would also mean Mir would avoid a potential inner-team conflict with Marc Marquez, as the latter is expected to enjoy lead rider status at Suzuki.

Signing Mir might come at an unexpected cost for HRC: While Marc Marquez is set to leave the team, his brother Alex is still under contract with Honda. After a somewhat underwhelming rookie season at the works team, the 2019 Moto2 World Champion was looking to be “parked” at a Honda customer team – which seems highly unlikely, as Honda’s only customer Pramac Racing has already announced a lineup of Alex Rins and Takaaki Nakagami. Honda might end up being forced to pass up on signing the current World Champion and keep the younger Marquez at the works team, where the relationship between the Marquez family camp and team management is already strained.

HRC to pay “seven-figures severance package” as Alex Marquez moves to WSBK
The weeks-long saga concerning Alex Marquez’status at Honda has ended last Thursday, as the HRC World Superbike team has announced, in a somewhat unassuming press release, that the 2019 Moto2 champion will partner Alvaro Bautista at the team from 2021 on. This announcement has come after multiple weeks of negotiations between HRC management and the Marquez family entourage; sources close to the latter have hinted at a severance package “at least in the high-seven figures” being paid out by Honda to the Spanish rider, Speedweek has learned. HRC has declined to comment on these rumors.
