Upgrade results, updated budgets and chassis stats can be found below:

Updated Budgets and Chassis Stats

Due also to the whole upgrade shenanigans, I am removing the rule that allows for teams to purchase and switch upgrades between each other.

The rule was written like this before:
Manufacturers can sell vehicle upgrades to privateers at a value of 50% the price of the original upgrades. To buy privateer vehicle upgrades, manufacturers must pay the full price the privateer paid for them.

Now the rule is written like this:
NEW: Manufacturers must sell vehicle upgrade to privateers at 100% of the price of the original upgrades. Privateers can not sell their upgrades to any other team. That includes both other privateers and manufacturers.
NEW: Manufacturers can only sell vehicle upgrades to privateers if they have the exact same chassis parameters. In other words, any manufacturer who does not provide a factory car or that applies a chassis penalty to its privateers can not sell their upgrades to them under any circunstance.

Autosport, 1992 wrote:Why did Frank Biela start from pole-position at Kyalami?

Frank Biela scored Audi's first feature race pole position in the Super Touring era. In fact, it was Audi's first overall pole position ever in WTCM - they didn't score a single on during the Group A class era. But Frank Biela shouldn't have started from pole position, as FISA revealed he had been applied a five place grid penalty for dangerous driving in the previous Road America round. So why did he start from pole position?

The real answer is actually simpler than one might think. FISA explained that Audi appealed the penalty and so, therefore, the penalty couldn't be applied as process was still on-going. "Audi appealed the penalty on the basis Frank Biela couldn't stop in any other place as its Audi 80 engine suffered a catastrophical failure." FISA accepted the appeal and investigation is currently ongoing as we head to Silverstone.

Penalties Update:
Frank Biela's five-place grid penalty will be applied at the next feature race he qualifies for.

Autosport, 1992 wrote:FISA declares War on Privateers in WTCM?

FISA has once again changed their ballast policies for World Touring Car Masters. It is the second change done this season to the ballast ruling in the premier touring car series. There are two big changes - one of them applied already during the Kyalami weekend - while the other will start getting applied at the RAC Tourist Trophy.

The first one is how ballast is applied to individual drivers who sit atop the driver standings. Previously, ballast was applied to the top eight in the standings. At Kyalami - and now moving forward - ballast was applied to the top four in the standings in the following manner:

1st - 20kg
2nd - 20kg
3rd - 10kg
4th - 10kg

The second ruling involves the privateers teams, in what some reporters are already waging as the beginning of the "War on Privateers" on behalf of FISA as more and more manufacturers display interest on the formula. Starting at the next round of the championship, at Silverstone, all privateer cars will be carrying an additional 30kg of ballast. FISA have justified this action on the basis that some manufacturers are cooperating with privateers in order to circunvent regulations regarding testing in the series. "We have learned some manufacturers have been using privateer vehicles as partners to extend testing sessions in some circuits. We can't allow that to happen as its giving an unfair and illegal advantage to some manufacturers".

The WTCM calendar will head to Europe for the first time this year in two weeks, for the first of the two endurance events of the season - the RAC Tourist Trophy, held at the Silverstone International Circuit. Patrick Watts is the championship leader on 49 points, two ahead of Vauxhall Sport's Bernd Schneider. USD and Toyota also lead the teams and manufacturers championship respectivelly. Volker Strycek is the independents championship leader.

Nonetheless, Volker was his usual excellent self, and we are happy with leading the independents standings.

Next up is the RAC trophy at Silverstone. We're confident at getting another good result there!

Autosport, 1992 wrote:David Leslie slams Audi drivers for poor driving standards

David Leslie came out of Pau an angry man. The Union Saver Developments driver, fresh of taking his first win of the season in this years World Touring Car Championship, was hopeful of carrying the form into the sprint race. His hopes of repeating his feat from saturday afternoon on sunday were ended on lap 15, when his Toyota Carina met with the wall at Buisson while trying an overtake on the Audi of Andrea Geisler.

"I saw Andrea loose control of the car coming through the chicane [Foch] and there was a gap for my car. I put it there and she turned in on me at the last possible moment. I took evasive action, hit the kerb, broke the suspension and hit the wall. That was it.", said David Leslie a few hours after the race. Geisler's version, on the other hand, is quite different. "David was way behind when we came to the corner. He did almost get beside coming out of the chicane when I lost the rear, but into the braking area, he was behind. There was no way he would make the corner without crashing."

Leslie also did not save words in critizising the behaviour of the Audi drivers on track during the season. "It's not the first time they've done it. Their car is so big they can do whatever they want with it and the stewards will let them get scot free. I like to trade paint myself but this is getting ridicolous.", mentioned the multiple time race winner in WTCM.

With 11 races run thus far and 11 different winners, the 1992 World Touring Car Masters is being one of the most competitive touring car seasons of all time. The series continues next week, as the championship moves to the Masaryk Circuit, in Brno, for the Czechoslovakia round of the championship, with Johnny Cecotto and BMW as championship leaders.

Autosport, 1992 wrote:Renault to join World Touring Car Masters in 1993

It was one of the biggest announcements of the weekend in the visit for the World Touring Car Masters to the king of street circuits in the city of Pau. Renault, the french manufacturer, has announced they are joining the championship for the 1993 season with a Super Touring version of their small family car, the Renault 19.

Renault is the first new manufacturer to commit themselves for the next season of the World Touring Car Masters. They haven't announced the team to be responsible for building the racecar, but the rumour points to either a new partnership with Voeckler or a team-up with 1991 WTCM Drivers Champion, Tauber Motorsport, who are rumoured to be wanting Bachot to return to the team for 1991.

"We are still looking for partners in 1992. Of course we have discussed things with Voeckler, we can not hide that. They have been our partners for so long, but our relationship with them hasn't been the best since Jérémy was fired by Frank Williams. The rest, for now, we can't comment, but are we excited to join such a competitive championship", claimed Renault's CEO Louis Schweitzer on the rumours.

If the team-up is indeed with Voeckler, former F1 champion Jérémy-Étienne Voeckler is the biggest candidate for one of the seats, even if the relationship with the manufacturer has turned sorrow after last year's firing of the frenchman by Frank Williams. Despite not offering commentary on the rumour, it seems JEV might be the #1 candidate for one of the possible Renault seats.

If the relationship with Tauber comes alive, the return of Silvio Bachot seems highly likely, possibly to join current driver and former F1 champion Guillaume Gauthier. "We wanna a champion driving the car. Of course, Silvio is an excellent driver, but he isn't the only one available. We are looking into other options and we would love to have someone with pedigree drive one of ours cars", commented Louis Schweitzer.

Autosport, 1992 wrote:Peugeot to leave World Touring Car Masters?

Peugeot came to Pau with high hopes of improving their fortunes. Home race, lots of fans of the manufacturer, and two hungry drivers wanting to impress around the streets of the town. The qualifying session for pre-qualifying didn't go too horribly for the french manufacturer, as both Yannick Dalmas and Philippe Alliot qualifying 14th and 13th, respectively, just one tenth shy of the two Nissan's.

A few hours later, the day would go from rather average to absolute disaster, as rain hit the circuit and none of the Peugeot's qualified for the feature and sprint race. While Alliot retired from 11th place with a few laps to spare, Yannick Dalmas's struggle with balance of the car in the wet and came home in 14th place, last of the classified finishers. To rub salt into the wound, the french manufacturer saw the two Lada's, powered by 1991 spec Peugeot engines, make it to the show. It was embarassing and they knew it - as soon as we saw Peugeot unpack their stuff, they were gone before sundown from Pau.

The lack of performance of the Peugeot team has been a question mark since they joined the WTCM championship last year, as their first evolution of the 405 struggled in the first half of the year. A lot of development, mostly done by legendary driver-engineer Jean-Pierre Jabouille, saw the team's fortunes improve in the later third of the season, as Alliot scored points in three races, with a best result of an 8th place. Testing restrictions for the 1992 WTCM season, however, seem to be hitting Peugeot pretty hard compared to its rivals.

"Last year, we took the car every weekend and did about 1000 laps between races to find out how to improve the car. We made small changes, changed every cranny, and finally we started to see improvements. This year, they told us we couldn't do that, and now we are in a situation where we can't find out what other teams are doing we aren't.", claimed Jabouille, the man responsible for much of the car development cycle.

"The car has potential. It's clear other teams have done a better job than us in the off-season, but we are working as hard as ever to improve our fortunes. This car, in the right hands, can win races. We are sure of it!", he added.

But it seems fortunes are hard to come by for Peugeot and the team behind the entry. Rumours are the manufacturer has stopped inject money for the WTCM project and will abandon the series at the end of the year. While the rumours were quietly shut down by its drivers, the question remains: how long does a manufacturer throw money at something with no return? According to the team's principal, Jean Todt, probably not very long. "It is not our decision to continue. We are doing the best we can with what was given. We have two very good drivers and some fantastic engineers. We just need some luck to turn around the tide."

VRT NWS, circa 1992 wrote:Silvio Bachot: a disappointment?
This article was translated with Google Translator.

If anyone had mentioned the name Silvio Bachot three years ago to a random belgian walking the street, the appropriate answer would have been: "just, who?" The former Formula One driver, who spent most of the late 80s racing in national touring car series, had become a rather unknown figure to everyone who was not interested in motorsport. That was until, of course, last year, where his name became the echo of national pride, as he took the belgian flag to the top step of the podium at the end of the 1991 World Touring Car Masters season, after a gruelling season-long battle with Johnny Cecotto.

An independent driver, VRT NWS made headlines with Bachot's victory, dubbing him the sucessor to the great Jacky Ickx, a man whose name is sinonimous with motorsport in the country. Almost one year later, we are starting to question not only our headline, but Silvio Bachot's value as a racing driver. This is seemingly no longer the man who put the Belgian racing scene on the map again, as last week at the Masaryk Circuit, he failed to even get on the races while his team-mate, the rather unknown youngster Alex Portman, scored the best result of the year for their squad, Vic Lee Racing. The question remains then: what has happened to Silvio?

VRT NWS has tried a good number of times to get an interview with Bachot, but all the attempts have been unsucessfull. According to his boss, Vic Lee, Bachot is working as hard as ever, but we cannot verify the quote. Vic Lee himself seems under scrutiny, as sources say his finances aren't exactly in the best shape in his home state of the United Kingdom. Bystanders at Masaryk claimed Bachot wasn't seen after the pre-qualifying races in the paddock, having seemingly returned home without warning anyone in the team. Does Bachot still have the heart to go racing? There are still enough rounds for him to show his magic in this championship. If he doesn't, perhaps its time for Belgium to look for a real racing hero - this is no Ickx, it seems.

Damage RNGs:
Bernd Schneider went into the wall on lap 3 of the first pre-qualifying race of the weekend. Driver was deemed ok, but Vauxhall impounded the #2 chassis to assess damage:
0-70 - No Damage
71-80 - 10%
81-90 - 20%
91-100 - 30%
Result: 100 - 30%. Vauxhall can choose to repair the damage or run the #3 chassis for Schneider for the next round.

With Brno, comes of course the upgrade window being open again. I remind everyone to please check the upgrade rules on the second post, as they were changed after the last upgrade period.

Autosport wrote:Newate: 'Supreme Confidence' In Driving Ability, No Reason For Change
It is safe to say that Andre Newate has become one of the more maligned characters in the World Touring Car Masters' paddock over the course of 1992. And while some of it has stemmed from his on-track performance, it is his off-track drama that has truly drawn the ire of his peers, especially in his native Hong Kong. His efforts to get Toyota banned from Hong Kong after they refused to sell him a works Carina, and the subsequent Toyota Protests, have earnt him a place in the history books. His propensity to rapidly fall to the back in races, combined with the relatively short length of pre-qualifying races, have worked to ensure he has gone comparatively under-the-radar once racing begins.
In spite of criticism, Newate has remained defiant, refusing to change anything about the way he or Team Racing conduct their operations. "I always have supreme confidence whenever I sit behind the wheel", he said in a statement issued on the Monday after Brno. "It is this confidence that gives me the ability to compete with the very best in touring car racing and come out on top. As a result, I see no reason for changing anything about the way I drive or the organisation of Team Racing. Nothing will stop me and Team Racing from behing the absolute zenith of international touring car racing", concluded the statement. It is unclear whether or not Team Racing will live up to this lofty standard set out over the remainder of the season.
