British Racing Partnership would like to enter into an arrangement with Cooper (Petoli) and BRM (v8fan) to hire the components (one T45 chassis, one P25 engine) for a second car on a race-by-race basis. We are interested to hear what you would charge each us for such an arrangement at the coming eight races.

Team Lotus will enter the following cars, after repairing the damage to OSCA 1558/10:

Maston Gregory - Lotus 12/1 - OSCA 1558/10
Lex Davison - Lotus 12/2 - OSCA 1558/11
Olivier Gendebien - Lotus 12/4 - OSCA 1558/TBA (pending confirmation/approval from Pi)

Should Lotus fail to acquire an OSCA 1558 for Gendebien, we'd be interested in a one-race loan deal from Owen Racing for one of their 1557 engines. We'd also like to ask the Australian race organisers to contribute to the shipping costs of Lex Davison's car as one of the hometown heros

As 1558 engine 14 is damaged beyond economic repair, we will instead loan 1558 engine 4 to Scuderia Centro Sud

OSCA will furthermore enter Bathurst with two cars for Ramos and Gonzalez:

Hernando da Silva Ramos (Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 1
José Froilan Gonzalez (Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 2

Motorsport Magazine wrote: O.S.C.A. testing new Grand Prix car - F159 ready for Monaco

O.S.C.A. are having a busy start to the new year. Not only have they sent two cars to the Australian Grand Prix at Mount Panorama for championship hopefuls Ramos and Gonzalez, the remainder of the team has not been idle either.

The Maserati brothers' new venture, having usurped their old company's place among Italy's leading builders of racing cars, have been challenging for Grand Prix victories for years now and secured the Constructors' championship in 1957. But despite their recent success, a driver's title continues to elude the brand from Bologna. They will hope to change that with the all-new F159 which was spied testing at the Autodromo di Modena in the early days of March.

Driven by Graham Hill and Guerino Bertocchi the F159 turned its first laps. The all-new car features a 2.4 litre V6 engine which is a departure of O.S.C.A.s traditional 1.5 litre engines. The days of the front-engined Grand Prix appear to be over as OSCA, like many other constructors, opted for a rear mid-engined layout.

Having missed the freight deadline for the Australian Grand Prix, the F159 is scheduled to make its competition debut at Monaco in May. Like previous models, it will be available to customers as a complete package, or as a separate chassis or engine.
O.S.C.A. will construct a new top-tier car known as the F159, as well as a new engine, called the 659. Three complete cars will be built for the factory team, and it will be available to customers for 45,000 (complete package), 27,500 (chassis) and 17,500 (engine).

Two F158/1558 packages will be put up for sale, buy the full package for 30,000, the chassis for 17,500 or the engine for 12,500.

March 1st 1959, Australian Grand Prix qualifying

Back for another season! After a dry run at the New Zealand Grand Prix across the Tasman Sea, the Formula One fraternity has gathered at another new circuit to many drivers for the Australian Grand Prix, the third one to be considered part of the World Championship. However, the entry list is significantly shorter than most observers would be used to. The cost of travel (not subsidised unlike the Ardmore race) proved prohibitive to some teams, and not worth the risk to others. As a result, the race will feature the smallest grid thus far, will all fourteen entrants making the grade at Mount Panorama.

1. Maurice Trintignant (Ecurie Voeckler) - Voeckler Type 57 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 659 engine 6
2. André Simon (Ecurie Voeckler) - Voeckler Type 57 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 659 engine 5
3. Fernand Tavano (Ecurie Voeckler) - Voeckler Type 57 chassis 3, O.S.C.A. 659 engine 7
4. Ken Kavanagh (Mr T. K. Kavanagh) - Cooper T45 chassis 3, BRM P26 chassis 5
5. Roy Salvadori (Vandervell Products Ltd.) - Vanwall VW58 chassis 1, Vanwall VE2 engine 5
6. Stuart Lewis-Evans (Rob Walker Racing) - Lotus 12 chassis 6, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 6
7. Alan Stacey (Owen Racing Organisation) - B.C.M.A. RP.1001 chassis 1, B.C.M.A. A/AS Wyvern engine 2
8. Masten Gregory (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 10
9. Lex Davison (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 11
10. Olivier Gendebien (Team Lotus) - Lotus 12 chassis 4, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 5
11. Wolfgang von Trips (Scuderia Centro-Sud) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 10, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 4
12. John Lanyon (Victorian Amateur Drivers Club Inc) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 12, O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 3
14. Hernando da Silva Ramos (Officine Secializzate Costruzione Automobili) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 1
15. José Froilán González (Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 2
  • Ecurie Voeckler, sensing the entry list would be a short one, were the first to enter. Trintignant and Simon have had to wait a while for a good result to come their way, but Fernand Tavano is making his début. Their car is also the only new machinery to make the trip, with Voeckler's first attempt at self-design and O.S.C.A.'s new engine make its first appearance before the works team tries it out.
  • Ken Kavanagh has been one of the more successful private entrants in F1 history, largely thanks to his appearances in the less-entered races. His car has scored some good results in the past, and with the right boost from attrition, he may well score again.
  • Fresh off a podium in Sebring and near-miss in Ardmore, Roy Salvadori and Vanwall are on a run of form that has been a long time coming for both parties. Last year's car still works, so there's no reason for it not to continue.
  • Rob Walker may have won the United States and New Zealand Grands Prix on the bounce, but that wasn't enough to keep hold of José Froilán González. Instead, with the exact same Lotus-O.S.C.A. combo, he's trusted the long-suffering Stuart Lewis-Evans to carry on the momentum.
  • Similarly, Alan Stacey will try to build on a successful 1958 with Owen, despite a false start in New Zealand.
  • Team Lotus, bolstered by some healthy 1958 prize money, is one of very few outfits to send a full squad to Oz, with Masten Gregory, Lex Davison and Olivier Gendebien entering last year's cars. They'll be among the contenders at the front.
  • Wolfgang von Trips found himself without a drive when Scuderia Centro Sud found themselves without a driver, neither of which deserved this situation. The two should prove to be a good force, albeit tempered by von Trips' own duties as reserve for the works O.S.C.A. squad. For now, he'll enter the Australian event with his primary team.
  • John Lanyon, a relative unknown to the paddock, has loaned out a 1957 O.S.C.A. with which to make his Grand Prix début. The 25-year-old has had some success racing sportscars around his native Melbourne as well as Tasmania and New South Wales.
  • After near-misses in the championship in 1956 and 1957, O.S.C.A. are now wasting no time in getting an early advantage this season. Although they're only sending two drivers in last year's car, Ramos and González will surely put on strong showings and notch up some points prior to the new car's introduction come the European season.

4. Alan Stacey (B.C.M.A.) - 2:48.21 (+3.35)
5. Roy Salvadori (Vanwall) - 2:49.34 (+4.48)
6. Fernand Tavano (Voeckler-O.S.C.A.) - 2:49.40 (+4.54)
7. Lex Davison (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 2:49.89 (+5.03)
8. Maurice Trintignant (Voeckler-O.S.C.A.) - 2:50.08 (+5.22)

12. Ken Kavanagh (Cooper-BRM0 - 2:55.65 (+10.79)
13. Olivier Gendebien (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 2:55.91 (+11.04)
14. John Lanyon (O.S.C.A.) - 2:56.23 (+11.37)

O.S.C.A. come out strong with a 1-3 in qualifying, Ramos securing his fourth career pole position. Simon shows that both the Voeckler chassis and new O.S.C.A. engine are competitive with second place, with Fernand Tavano cementing it with an impressive sixth place on début. The Lotus cars are the great disappointment, as mechanical issues prevented all but Davison from setting more than one competitive lap.

March 2nd 1959, Australian Grand Prix
Ramos got the best start from pole, but this turned out to be at the expense of his clutch. He stopped after turn 1, causing Simon to take evasive action and spin out. In the chaos, Roy Salvadori in the Vanwall took the early advantage and maintained it over the mountain, leading the first two laps with González in tow. González quickly regrouped and took the lead down the Conrod Straight on the third lap, subsequently pulling away. Behind the leading duo, the fighting was intense. Olivier Gendebien was able to pull off some impressive moves to reach third place by the fifth lap, with Gregory and Lewis-Evans also gaining ground. Lex Davison in the other Lotus could not profit as well, his gearbox calling it quits on the fourth lap.

Gendebien's charge continued on lap 6, passing Salvadori and seemingly being the only driver finding overtaking simple around the twisty mountain section. Behind the top three, Gregory was holding up Lewis-Evans and Kavanagh, while von Trips was seventh and keeping Stacey and Lanyon behind. Salvadori did not let himself fall too far behind and re-took second place on the ninth lap. On lap 11, Fernand Tavano (running sixth) made a mistake, with Ken Kavanagh following closely. Kavanagh couldn't stop in time, punting Tavano into the earth bank lining the track. Both cars retired, with Tavano's particularly damaged, but thankfully both drivers were unscathed.

By this point, Salvadori had caught González and was looking for a way past. The Argentine was able to hold the Brit's advances admirably, but a particularly spirited move on lap 13 left the door open for Gendebien to take an opportunistic lead in the works Lotus! Gregory and Lewis-Evans had also closed in at this point, and with John Lanyon's O.S.C.A. calling it quits, this means only Trintignant, von Trips and Stacey were left in the race outside of the fight at the front. González and Salvadori continued their battle for second, and soon let Masten Gregory through to take a Lotus 1-2. Lewis-Evans also snuck in, splitting the squabblers in fourth, then passing González as well on lap 15.

After Salvadori had a slip-up, González was finally able to focus on the cars ahead and overtook the Rob Walker car again, then dispatching Gregory for second on the following lap. Lewis-Evans' drop in pace was attributed to an oil leak that ended his race shortly thereafter. Maurice Trintignant, in the sole remaining Voeckler, took it upon himself to join the fight, passing Salvadori and Gregory to reach third place on lap 21. Unfortunately this was short-lived, as the electrics soon started to act up, ending his race. Von Trips and Stacey were also making significant headway, underlining the performance parity of all six remaining cars. That is, until they were reduced to five one lap later as Gregory suffered a puncture at the top of the mountain.

And then there were four. Roy Salvadori's differential gave up on lap 27, leaving just four cars on track. The race had not yet reached halfway. Olivier Gendebien was still leading in the works Lotus, ahead of González's works O.S.C.A., Wolfgang von Trips' Scuderia Centro Sud machine and Alan Stacey for Owen. This state of affairs lasted one lap. Stacey's B.C.M.A. had to stop with cooling issues. Three were now left, and all were fighting for the win. On lap 36, González finally found an opening and took the lead off Gendebien again. Three laps later, Gendebien's car ran out of energy to keep up the fight, with a suspension wobble. All three Lotuses were out. Only two O.S.C.A.s remained.

This turned out to be the final point of interest in the race. Von Trips had neither the pace nor the car to challenge the works car, allowing González to take it easy to the end of the race. The Argentine was left to take his third consecutive race victory, one lap ahead of von Trips. With no other car even close to finishing, the already dwindling crowd of Australians took to the ticket booths to demand a refund. Few could blame them. While most entrants had shown impressive turns of speed at various points, their presence in the race was all too brief. The paddock could only wish for a more reliable time in Monaco.

1. José Froilán González (O.S.C.A.) - 2:41:18.93
2. Wolfgang von Trips (O.S.C.A.) +1 lap
Ret. Olivier Gendebien (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) +19 laps/Suspension

Despite the eventual DNF in the Australian GP, Tony Vandervell is rejuvenated by the seemingly good performance of last year's car. No reason to change the successful combination:
Entry: Roy Salvadori (Vandervell Products Ltd.) - Vanwall VW58 chassis 1, Vanwall VE2 engine 5
Strategy: Ehh... let's go with fast finish assuming others will fall on the wayside (or in the harbor) :P

Motor Sport Magazine wrote: British Commonwealth Motorsport Association reveals delayed challenger for '59 Grand Prix season

In a surprise, impromptu event at Earls Court on Sunday evening - the much delayed notice of which sent this correspondent scrambling through London traffic in a most unbecoming manner - Sir Edward, the Delphic chairman of the recently inaugurated Commonwealth Defence and Aerospace plc, and long the standard-bearer for Britain's successes in motor racing at home and overseas, unceremoniously unveiled a sleek beauty of a racing car. With some cryptic references to what was, evidently, a challenging development period, Sir Edward, in his classic manner, appended the rather unimaginative appellation of P.1101 to the new machine.

Indeed, the harried, inelegant nature of the event belied the effervescent excitement that the new design was generating by implication; for Reid Railton had manifestly overcome his reservations regarding that Holy Grail of modern racing car design - the rear-engined layout, one that, on paper, had seemingly demonstrated so much promise, but had been terribly damaged by the ostensibly indomitable scale of Cooper's failures. Accompanying the new chassis, too, was a new engine - another naturally aspirated two-and-a-half litre inline-six, with considerable improvements over the preceding Wyvern. According to the somewhat breathless representative from Siddeley, the block for the Pegasus is forged out of a new aluminium alloy, and the double-barrel carburettors have been supplanted by a novel fuel injection solution, among other impressive technical achievements.

In the brief minute or so in which I was able to corner Sir Edward for some meaningful conversation, your correspondent questioned whether, at such late notice, this new challenger would be available for the intrepid trio of Brabham, Surtees, and Moss for the rapidly approaching Grand Prix at Monaco; as you, readers, might have already surmised, the only response that could be extracted was a non-committal "We shall see".
B.C.M.A. will design a new chassis for £100,000, to be designated the P.1101.
B.C.M.A. will also proceed to design a new engine for £60,000, to be designated the Pegasus

B.C.M.A. will construct 3 P.1101, and 3 Pegasus, for a total outlay of £120,000.

For the Monaco Grand Prix, B.C.M.A. will submit the following entries:

Jack Brabham - P.1101 1, Pegasus 1
John Surtees - P.1101 2, Pegasus 2
Stirling Moss - P.1101 3, Pegasus 3

So, to begin my stewardship of Lotus, Colin Chapman will be building three top-tier Lotus 16s for a design cost of £100,000 and a build cost of £75,000 (£25,000 per car). Those three chassis will of course be:
  • Lotus 16, chassis 1
  • Lotus 16, chassis 2
  • Lotus 16 chassis 3
- - - - - - - - - -

We have also agreed to pay £17,500 (£52,500 total). This comes with free access to unused older OSCA equipment for spares, and new engines if needed as replacements at build cost (£15,000 per engine)

- - - - - - - - - -

While going out and shilling some of his other wares to privateer racers around Britain, Colin Chapman met a young driver from Fife who made a lasting impression on him. Chapman has offered the young driver a deal on the following terms:

Image Jim Clark will be signed to Lotus on a £10,000 retainer. He will not run a full-time Formula One schedule in 1959, and will be free to continue running for the Border Reivers (who will be supplied with a Lotus Elite for him to drive) in 1959 in events of his and their choosing. However, we do expect him to make his Formula One debut later in the year, and expect that he will appear at least at Silverstone and Goodwood this season.

- - - - - - - - - -

We will also be making the following entries to the Monaco Grand Prix:
  • Image Masten Gregory - Lotus 16 chassis 1 | OSCA 1559 engine 8
  • Image Olivier Gendebien - Lotus 16 chassis 2 | OSCA 1559 engine 9
  • Image Lex Davison - Lotus 16, chassis 3 | OSCA 1559 engine 10
- - - - - - - - - -

Lotus also has a strong commitment to supporting privateer racing teams. As a result, the following are being put up for sale:
  • Lotus 10 chassis 2 (1956) - guide price £20,000
  • Lotus 12 chassis 1 (1958) - guide price £50,000
  • Lotus 12 chassis 2 (1958) - guide price £50,000
  • Lotus 12 chassis 3 (1958) - guide price £50,000
  • Lotus 12 chassis 4 (1958) - guide price £50,000
  • OSCA 1558 engine 5 (1958) - guide price £15,000
  • OSCA 1558 engine 10 (1958) - guide price £15,000
  • OSCA 1558 engine 11 (1958) - guide price £15,000
The Lotus 12 is the top-tier 1958 car which won the United States Grand Prix, and which presents an attractive and affordable option for the ambitious privateer.

May 9th 1959, Monaco Grand Prix qualifying
The European season begins in earnest! The majority of teams will likely want to forget their escapades in Australia, with the reduced cost guaranteed by organisers little comfort after such a mechanical bloodbath. O.S.C.A. enter the season proper with a nine-point advantage over all competitors however, and with their new car (and those of other competitors) making their début this time around, Monaco is likely to be a better representation of the pecking order for 1959.

1. Roy Salvadori (Vandervell Products Ltd.) - Vanwall VW58 chassis 1, Vanwall VE2 engine 5
2. Bruce McLaren (Cooper Car Company) - Cooper T45 chassis 1, Climax FPF V engine 1
3. Peter Collins (Cooper Car Company) - Cooper T45 chassis 2, Climax FPF V engine 2
4. Wolfgang von Trips (Scuderia Centro Sud) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 10, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 14
5. Rob Slotemaker (Ecurie Maarsbergen) - O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 12, O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 3

10. Jim Russell (British Racing Partnership) - Cooper T45 chassis 3, BRM P26 engine 5
11. Honoré Wagner (Honoré Wagner) - O.S.C.A. F158 chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1558 engine 2
12. Jack Brabham (British Commonwealth Motorsport Association) - B.C.M.A. P.1101 chassis 1, B.C.M.A. Pegasus engine 1
14. John Surtees (British Commonwealth Motorsport Association) - B.C.M.A. P.1101 chassis 2, B.C.M.A. Pegasus engine 2

  • Roy Salvadori took the opportunity of Bathurst to show the 1958 Vanwall could take the fight to the O.S.C.A. on a good day and was a viable threat for points the rest of the time. The works team will not have a new chassis this year though. How will it measure up?
  • Despite counting the Antipodean Bruce McLaren within their ranks, Cooper did not attend the Australian Grand Prix while facing internal turmoil. With a new internal structure in place, McLaren and defending champion Peter Collins will start the 1959 season by prolonging the Cooper T45's lifespan.
  • Scuderia Centro Sud may not have had the ultimate to challenge for the win in Bathurst, but a maiden podium by default should still give von Trips a morale boost for the rest of the year. Consalvo Sanesi may be on the ageing side, but even he can hope for a good result now.
  • Carel Godin de Beaufort's merry mob is ready for another year. Will Rob Slotemaker be able to make the grid now he doesn't have a Loonmotor?
  • O.S.C.A.'s new 659 engine débuted in the Voecklers in Bathurst, but this weekend they'll be affixed to the equally brand-new F159 chassis. Ramos, González and Hill will have a good basis for a title tilt if it's any improvement on the 1958 car.
  • Stirling Moss' dad may once again be disappointed his son hasn't joined him, but Jim Russell's Cooper-BRM remains a welcome sight on the F1 grid.
  • The Luxembourgish Honoré Wagner has returned for another partial season, this time in a year-old O.S.C.A., which puts him as an outside shot for a good result on its own.
  • B.C.M.A. continues on for another government-backed year and a new machine to go with it. The P.1101 chassis and Pegasus engine will be among the main contenders for the title no doubt, and the titanic trio of Brabham, Moss and Surtees should do the combo justice.
  • Stuart Lewis-Evans showed some creditable pace in Bathurst, and with some renewed confidence and the help of Dan Gurney, Rob Walker could be on for another good year despite the loss of González.
  • Owen had a rough go of it in Bathurst despite Stacey's promising qualifying pace. Troy Ruttman is back in a full-time ride though, and there's no reason the duo won't give Alfred's employees another good year.
  • Team Lotus managed to come out swinging during the Bathurst race despite a poor quali session, and updating to the new Lotus 16 could be the chance they need to get right back to the front as a works team.
  • The new Voeckler in-house chassis was a revelation in Australia. Even complete unknown Tavano was able to extract good pace from the car, and though the competition will be stiffer this time around, there's enough in place to continue Gordini's legacy.
  • David Hampshire's back for another year with Henry Taylor driving a 1958 Vanwall, but despite his attempts to get a second Taylor in his O.S.C.A. in the form of Mike, they'll be a single-car effort for the foreseeable future.
  • Defending champions Ferrari skipped Bathurst for logistical reasons, although perhaps the real reason was internal turmoil regarding their driver signings. Bonnier and Hill are at least more than capable of anchoring a squad, but with a comparative lack of star power, the Commendatore is definitely taking a gamble.

28. Honoré Wagner (O.S.C.A.) - 1:52.27 (+12.45)

The new-for-1959 machines have proven to be as good as they should, with B.C.M.A. once again taking centre stage and a 1-2 in qualifying. Masten Gregory's all-out lap towards the session's end carried him to a surprising front row start, ahead of all the works O.S.C.A. cars, while his teammates were relegated to the lower end of the grid, or even a DNQ in Gendebien's case. Defending champ Collins is top of the 1958 machines in his first Cooper appearance, with the Ferraris not holding up too badly either.

Rob Walker's squad is split around the grid cut, while Centro Sud go from second place in Bathurst to a double DNQ. O.S.C.A.'s strategy of selling cars to all bidders may do wonders for their balance sheet, but it remains quite a disorienting sight for the whole bottom five to be using their machinery, even accounting for two of those being three-year-old designs.

23. Olivier Gendebien (Lotus-O.S.C.A.) - 1:48.40 (+8.59)
Following the very disappointing failure of Olivier Gendebien to qualify for the Monaco Grand Prix, Colin Chapman is in the market for a new driver for his team.

He has made an offer to Owen Racing Organisation.

Lotus have put forward an offer to buy out Image Alan Stacey, in return for a cash payment of £15,000 and Lotus 12 chassis 4. They await a response from the Owen Racing Organisation.
