Perhaps the most dominant season in real-life history was actually a little bit closer in the overall standings with this points system. Barrichello kept Schumacher relatively honest in the last few races, meaning that the victory margin was only just over a win. It's an absolute vibe to see Kimi Räikkönen drop out of the top ten, just as much as it is to see HWNSNBM ahead of Ralf Schumacher. Otherwise, the changes are not all that extreme, other than the obvious Coulthard domination at McLaren.

1. Michael Schumacher 1 599
2. Rubens Barrichello 1 485
3. Jenson Button 1 260

4. Juan Pablo Montoya 1 056
5. Fernando Alonso 1 021
6. Giancarlo Fisichella 992
7. Jarno Trulli 988
8. David Coulthard 882
9. Felipe Massa 811
10. Takuma Sato 784
11. Kimi Räikkönen 769

A bit surprising, perhaps, that Schumacher absolutely crushed 2003. Some might have expected with Räikkönen's consistency that he would turn the whole thing around, but unfortunately for the Finn and Montoya, it was the constant fourth and sixth places that Schumacher picked up that allowed him to dominate for another season. Ralf Schumacher jumped up the order and headed for a potential third place in the championship, but it was Schumacher and Ferrari who had the comfortable measure of the rest of the field.

The big jumper here is definitely Cristiano da Matta along with Jos Verstapen, while Jenson Button and Giancarlo Fisichella are way way further down than in real life.

1. Michael Schumacher 1 273
2. Kimi Räikkönen 1 158
3. Juan Pablo Montoya 1 104

4. Ralf Schumacher 997
5. Rubens Barrichello 932

Geez oh man - we all knew that this was the most predictable F1 season in history, but geez oh man anyway. This will probably remain the most dominant gap in the whole series' history, unless perhaps 92 Mansell is threatening that record. We could count only Schumacher's wins and he would still be a point ahead of Barrichello, who in this case only just barely scraped ahead of Montoya and the other contenders. Räikkönen had a very rocky start at McLaren, finishing behind even Massa. Heidfeld did fantastically well in 6th place (did Ron Dennis make the wrong choice), while others like Olivier Panis fall to shocking positions down at the bottom of the order.

1. Michael Schumacher 1 652
2. Rubens Barrichello 1 099
3. Juan Pablo Montoya 1 083

4. David Coulthard 1 036
5. Ralf Schumacher 1 018

Well, the further back we go, the more we head into bizarro territory. Yes, that's right, Jean Alesi finishes the 2001 season in fourth place, ahead of both Williams drivers, ahead of Häkkinen, ahead of Villeneuve. Michael Schumacher wins the season again very comfortably, while David Coulthard perhaps surprisingly still holds his own against Barrichello in this instance. Häkkinen is left to compete with Villeneuve in the BAR for his swanson, while Irvine and Trully drop far far far down the order from normal. However, at the top it all looks much the same.

1. Michael Schumacher 1 446
2. David Coulhard 1 147
3. Rubens Barrichello 1 128

4. Jean Alesi 912
5. Ralf Schumacher 855
6. Nick Heidfeld 755
7. Mika Häkkinen 748 (best finish: 1st twice)
8. Jacques Villeneuve 748 (best finish: 3rd twice)
9. Kimi Räikkönen 677 (best finish: 4th twice)
10. Olivier Panis 677 (best finish: 4th)
11. Jos Verstappen 595
12. Giancarlo Fisichella 584
13. Jenson Button 537
14. Juan Pablo Montoya 522
15. Heinz-Harald Frentzen 515
16. Jarno Trulli 514

It was an incredibly close three-way battle until the very end, with Barrichello acting as the dark horse in fourth all the way through. While folks like Eddie Irvine and Alex Wurz jumped up the order of play, it was folks like de la Rosa and Verstappen who dropped down on their side. At the final moment, it was enough for Häkkinen to keep his lead insurmountable by just finishing right behind Schumacher, even when the German had his end-of-season run of wins.

1. Mika Häkkinen 1 284
2. Michael Schumacher 1 249
3. David Coulthard 1 237

1999 saw the domination of one driver above all others. It was of course the insurmountable Eddie Irvine, who crushed his opposition to take the championship with over two wins in the bag against Ralf Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen, the former of which had a breakthrough year to beat both Frentzen and Coulthard's charges to the top. Michael Schumacher's broken leg meant he saw the season out behind a Stewart, while otherwise further down the order the results were somewhat similar. Zonta and Diniz got incredibly low scores, while Badoer actually climbed quite significantly from 23rd to 17th overall.

1. Eddie Irvine 1 293
2. Mika Häkkinen 1 023
3. Ralf Schumacher 958

4. Heinz-Harald Frentzen 943
5. David Coulthard 790

It was a very close season once again at the very front, but the fans at home were treated to a turnaround in Suzuka when Mika Häkkinen took his first title at the death! Michael Schumacher, followed very closely by his teammate and future champion Eddie Irvine, were embroiled in a very close fight against the McLarens that lasted the whole season. Otherwise, further down people like Shinji Nakano and Tora Takagi jumped up the order, as others like Jan Magnussen and Esteban Tuero tumbled down it.

McLaren win the constructors' title by seven points

1. Mika Häkkinen 1 225
2. Michael Schumacher 1 177
3. Eddie Irvine 1 081

4. David Coulthard 1 040

For his antics against Jacques Villeneuve at the season finale, Michael Schumacher was disqualified from the 1997 championship. However, one wonders why he was bumping into Villeneuve in the first place, because he had already actually won the season with a race to spare! Not only that, but Jacques wasn't even his main rival: the incredible Jean Alesi was! Alesi, through incredible resilience and podiums and points finishes, ended up winning the championship and taking home the riches, rather embarrassing the Williams and Ferraris behind!

Again Shinji Nakano goes up, while Barrichello goes way way down. Gerhard Berger's performance was exceptional considering he missed three races - had he not done so, he could easily have won the season (combined with Wurz's podium, his overall score could have been 1 021).

1. Jean Alesi 1 051
2. Jacques Villeneuve 1 020
3. Gerhard Berger 934

4. Heinz-Harald Frentzen 906

Jean Alesi finished an excellent third in 1996, but even the mighty French-Sicilian was no match for Williams domination. Despite winning 50% of the races, Damon Hill's poor reliability in himself and his machinery allowed Jacques Villeneuve to lead just about most of the championship until the very end, when Hill stole it at the death at Suzuka. Eddie Irvine did not prosper in his Ferrari debut, finishing the year 15th :badoer:

Benetton swept the constructors' and it wasn't even close. Michael Schumacher was kept honest by an exceptional Johnny Herbert, who frankly embarrassed Damon Hill and the Williams drivers in a straight fight. Even Heinz-Harald Frentzen in a Sauber was able to split them in the overall standings. Gerhard Berger and the Ferraris were the best of the rest for the most part, while further down the order it was all a bit chaotic.

Excellent work from Mark Blundell to beat Mika Häkkinen by two wins.

Damon Hill has the 1994 season handed to him on a silver plate! He has a rolling selection of teammates throughout the year and his main opposition gets stripped of two of his best results and excluded from two more races. The attention really should be paid to the heroes of the hour, those people being Olivier Panis who goes from 11th to 3rd overall, and Johnny Herbert who goes from 26th to 9th, possibly the biggest jump yet seen in this series. Martini and Eric Bernard in the top 10 - what's not to like?

It's not all that surprising in this universe why Ayrton Senna wanted to move to Williams after this season. Even Damon Hill, who I must say has been generously helped by this system, beats Senna to runner-up spot by the end of the year. Schumacher got a whole handful of podiums but his inability to finish enough didn't do him any favours for a long-term fight. Shout out to Philippe Alliot who jumps up ahead of both Ferraris.

An excellent running for the Benettons nearly gives us a shock champion in the new Michael Schumacher (who will go down in history as a five-time world champion). Martin Brundle likewise did very well to beat the other Williams of Riccardo Patrese, while Ayrton Senna suffered the embarrassment of getting beaten by teammate Gerhard Berger and the Footwork of Michele Alboreto, anyone's driver of the year in this author's book. JJ Lehto also did incredibly well to take ninth place in a Scuderia Italia. However, one needs to really gaze down the results table to find where Ivan Capelli ended up in his sole year for Ferrari :badoer:

1. Nigel Mansell 1 179
2. Michael Schumacher 1 036
3. Martin Brundle 917

4. Riccardo Patrese 908

After almost a decade of very close-run things, Ayrton Senna wipes the floor with the competition in 1991. Mansell can barely get to race finishes, Riccardo Patrese is the only person remotely close to challenging the Brazilian, while Alain Prost is nowhere to be seen in that Ferrari. Stefano Modena and Roberto Moreno are respectable if not far off where they probably should be, while further back it is a little more predictable outside of some great runs from Emanuele Pirro.

Alain Prost's switch to Ferrari turns out to be a massive success for him, as he manages to pip a faltering Ayrton Senna at the last gasps of the season. Senna, who had dominated the early stages, ended up losing out to his fellow Brazilian Nelson Piquet, while even new teammate Gerhard Berger had a shot at the title for an extended time. Nicola Larini did brilliantly to outpace Nigel Mansell in the other Ferrari. McLaren sweep the constructors.

Although his 1991 was especially brilliant, it seems that Ayrton Senna is not being treated too kindly by this system as we go back into the 1980s. Alain Prost crushes the field in a rather dull season, with only the Williams drivers for real opposition. The Ferraris were hardly ever able to get their cars to the finish, so they were never a threat. Meanwhile, Andrea de Cesaris had a great one and pulled himself into the top ten along with Derek Warwick and Eddie Cheever. Alessandro Nannini nearly launched a magnificent upset in beating Senna, but it was not to be.

Again, a real-life close battle is anything but in this version of events! Alain Prost sweeps the 1988 title ahead of teammate Ayrton Senna, while the two of them dominated proceedings ahead of Boutsen, Berger, and surprisingly Derek Warwick. Let's not talk about Nigel Mansell's season, but yes it was a McLaren walkover like in real life - just a different McLaren this time around.

It's another massive effort from the Brazilian crowd in 1987, as Nelson Piquet takes the championship ahead of Ayrton Senna. While Senna had a good early start, Piquet's consistency was just brilliant for the whole year, and he racked up those points until he was virtually unstoppable. Teammate Mansell was far off, and was taken out towards season-end, while the McLarens of Johansson and Prost were the only other noteworthy pretenders to the throne. Shoutout to Streiff and Palmer for soundly beating the Ferraris!

Say hello to possibly the closest championship in F-Zero history! Prost takes the title at the very last second as Mansell's car explodes. Mansell was leading the championship quite convincingly until that last-race tragedy. Otherwise, his teammate Piquet and rival Prost just about inherited the place from him, and Prost would only have needed second place to take it anyway.

Further down there weren't too many surprises, except for consistent finishers Brundle, Boutsen, and Dumfries jumping up the order significantly.

This one was less close, to say the least. de Angelis, Alboreto, Boutsen, and Martin Brundle amazingly seemed to be the biggest challengers for most of the season, despite two of them scoring virtually no points in the real championship. Senna suffers as always from this system, as do Rosberg and Piquet. However, the front of the pack is unchanged and Prost takes a sixth world championship. Will Lauda be able to stop him in 1984?

You'll be astonished to know that Prost wins this one as well! The unstoppable Frenchman benefited a huge amount from being one of four drivers all year who could consistently get a car to the end of a race. Lauda, his teammate, was relatively close behind, along with Elio de Angelis, who again shone under this system. Arnoux took a mighty fourth and was still in the championship hunt all the way to the season finale.

He does it! It's an 8th (and almost certainly final) title for Prost, who edges out Piquet on sheer consistency yet again. Arnoux, Rosberg, and especially Marc Surer deserve recommendations for their excellent performances over the whole year. You might also be noticing that the gap between the reliable cars and the not so reliable ones is getting bigger and bigger and bigger as we go further back in time.

In a mad season just as in real life, you'd be surprised to know that Keke still takes the title even in this universe. Unbelievable as it may seem, Alain Prost was not even in the running for the 1981 championship, in this universe or the next. Instead, it was the surefire consistency of Carlos Reutemann that won the Argentinian the F0 world title! Nelson Piquet's three consecutive retirements put him on the back foot, and he was unable to reclaim his position at the top of the standings. Alan Jones was breathing down his neck too, but didn't have enough of the high finishes to take the championship either.

Shout-outs go to John Watson, Rene Arnoux and (as always) Marc Surer for their brilliant running up into the top half of the standings.

Nelson Piquet sadly does not do very well in this series, as Alan Jones takes a convincing championship ahead of future champion Reutemann. Laffite, Arnoux, and Pironi are all there just about but not quite, as they will be for the following few years.

But check out Scheckter! Not nearly so bad in this universe. Sure, he wasn't challenging for the title, but to end the season one place behind Villeneuve in 8th was a good showing. Looking to the bottom of the standings will start to show you the new era of F1, as about 30% of all the entries scored no points.

Jody Scheckter wins it and it's not even close. He and teammate Gilles Villeneuve sweep the standings ahead of Clay Regazzoni and John Watson. Surprises were Jochen Mass, Emerson Fitipaldi, and Jan Lammers, all of whom bumped themselves up about ten places higher than they used to be. Fittipaldi especially was perhaps too pessimistic when he retired at the end of the season!

And the winner of the 1978 F0 trophy goes to... Jacques Laffite? That's right! Year after year, along with Tambay, Depailler and Pironi, he has led the French contingent of "very decent and reliable F0 finishers every single season", and now for once it has actually come back to reward him and his countrymen. Laffite takes a brilliant championship victory despite never finishing higher than third. Peterson's death ruled him out of the final hunt, while Reutemann just about snatched the title away at the last minute with a first and a third. This must be the most out-there championship since Jean Alesi won 1997. Well done!

It was another Ferrari wipeout in 1977, with Niki Lauda edging out the only real competition in teammate and future champion Carlos Reutemann. This would be Lauda's final championship in the sport, which is incredible considering how well he would do in later years. Even when missing the final two rounds here, he still dominated in a way rarely seen in this era.

1976 will go down in history mostly for the epic rivalry between Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter. The South African was hot on the Austrian's heels all season, and was just able to surpass his points tally for the final event of the year at Fuji. In the end, it was a bit of a damp squib because neither car finished, but regardless it was an epic display of triumph over adversity as the Tyrrell driver was able to defeat the mighty Ferrari.

It was also an epic three-way constructor fight: 1 258 for Ferrari; 1 131 for McLaren; and 1 295 for Tyrrell. Epic stuff!

It's the usual suspects time and time again. The top 5 is full of all-time classic F0 runners, who always seem to be consistent and always seem to be in the championship hunt. Here, however, Niki Lauda stomped the field to win a second F0 championship following 1977, with Tom Pryce an excellent 10th overall. The scores from the backmarkers were mostly woeful aside from the aforementioned Pryce, Brambilla, and Mark Donohue.

It was decided at the final race, and if either driver had finished one place higher or lower, it would have swung the other way. One of the closest championships in F0 history went down to the wire, with Emerson Fittipaldi just edging out Clay Regazzoni ahead of the ever-present Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler.

Graham Hill had a great season to finish 8th in his swansong, while Denny Hulme and Carlos Reutemann too impressed.

Sadly all back to relative normality for the mid-1970s, as Jackie Stewart makes an easy clean sweep of the 1973 championship. His main rival was the excellent Denny Hulme, who along with Emerson Fittipaldi and Stewart's teammate Francois Cevert, made an interesting battle for runner-up spot at least.

Shout-outs go to Reutemann (always), Ickx, and Regazzoni, each of whom jumped lightyears ahead of their real position.

A very low-scoring season as we are down to just 12 rounds. As in real life, Emerson Fittipaldi wins his first season here, except this time it is mega close against Denny Hulme, who yet again does extraordinarily well to push for a title.

Our biggest surprises were probably how well Ronnie Peterson did, along with (as always) Graham Hill and Niki Lauda.

Hulme's heroics also boost McLaren to another constructors' title.

Another real-life champion is F0 champion, as Jackie Stewart waltzes to his second title. Only Ronnie Peterson had any hope in hell of reaching him, and even he was still a win off. However, all the spotlight should be shone on the heroic efforts of one John Surtees, who jumps from 19th to 5th overall.

Denny Hulme, whom we've been noticing has done excellently in his time in this series, wins the 1970 F0 season by just three points. We were this close to greatness, however, as his closest rival came in none other than Henri Pescarolo. The death of Jochen Rindt opened the door of the championship to a big pile of other competitors, not least Chris Amon, Rodriguez and Clay Regazzoni. It was a classic close season for the ages - one wonders if Hulme can sweep up a number of the remaining seasons to go.

1. Denny Hulme 663
2. Henri Pescarolo 660

A potentially brilliant showdown between Jackie Stewart and Bruce McLaren turned into a damp squib at the season finale when McLaren's car didn't even start for the race. This means that Stewart takes all his real-life championships like clockwork. Ickx steals second place, with Beltoise doing brilliantly there in third. Otherwise, the usual suspects such as Hulme, Hill, and interestingly Piers Courage, irritate the top 10.

1. Jackie Stewart 774
2. Jacky Ickx 674
3. Jean-Pierre Beltoise 662

4. Bruce McLaren 657
5. Denny Hulme 548
6. Graham Hill 535

It was a close-run thing yet again, and Jackie Stewart nearly took a fourth title, but in the end Graham Hill won it just as in real life. Denny Hulme was the only other real contender, while only a few of the real-life backmarkers (namely Beltoise) managed to make an impression on the overall championship standings.

1. Graham Hill 718
2. Jackie Stewart 676
3. Denny Hulme 668

4. Bruce McLaren 529
5. Jacky Ickx 523
6. Jean-Pierre Beltoise 436
7. Jo Siffert 429
8. Pedro Rodriguez 419
9. John Surtees 318
10. Chris Amon 299
11. Piers Courage 276
12. Richard Attwood 266
