I think best looking helmets are, Boutsen's, Frentzen's and Diniz's. So yes, my favorite design is black or dark blue with red and/or yellow.

Gary Brabham, hands down. The only way to improve that is a yellow roo on a neon green background.
Nissanymania! Friday has never been the same since.

The car in front is a Stefan.

I always loved the helmets that bucked the trend and stood out from the crowd. I have a few I'd like to nominate:

Mauricio Gugelmin:

Tarso Marques:

Montoya's special helmet used at the 2005 Brazilian GP was also great:

He used to run a competition prior to each Brazilian GP to get school kids to design his helmet, and the winner was given VIP tickets to the race.

I also think that Pedro Lamy, Gilles Villeneuve's and Jacques Villeneuve's helmet designs were distinctive. Special credit to Alex Wurz's helmet design too - he paints his crash helmets himself

One thing I have to say that I don't like drivers changing there helmets every season. When I started watching F1 you could always identify driver from the helmet and they stayed the same from team to team.

I second this notion wholeheartedly. Lets look at the current Finns for example, Kimi changes his helmet every effin year it seems as does Kovo. AND their helmets dont even have blue in them :(

*Misses the helmets of Häkkinen and Salo*... those were simple yet distinctive.

I always liked Stefan Johansson's helmets. I like the 3 leaves on the sides. He was another one who used to change the colours of his helmet every so often, but the design was always pretty much the same.
Come to think it, JJ Lehto was like that as well.

Every finn was like that up until Kimi and Heikki.

Well, Keke changed his helmet once, but even then he kept the basic design same

Graham / Damon Hill by a mile
"will you stop him playing tennis then?", referring to Montoya's famous shoulder injury, to which Whitmarsh replied "well, it's very difficult to play tennis on a motorbike"

Formula 1 drivers of today are such corporate prostitutes that they pretty much let their teams decide the livery of their helmets. Even Fernando Alonso has changed the colours of his helmet just to please the sponsors of Renault. David Coulthard was probably the last F1 driver who had the guts to use the colours of his nation in his helmet.

Even Gerhard Berger let Red Bull put their logo and "Gives You Wings" on his helmet for that time he raced around Budapest :(

I too hate the way the drivers change their helmets so often now, and so many of them are becoming less distinct - the Finns and Alonso now wear helmets that look like motorbike helmets rather than the bold shapes of F1.

I'm a big fan of Badoer's green on top with the yellow front section:

Anthony Davidson has a brilliantly bold design:

Pedro Diniz is a very dramatic one, a lovely deep shade of blue

Something cheap and cheerful about Ralph Firman's lid, you can't miss it:

Didn't Carlos Pace use the same design when he was in F1 back in the 70s?

The "Go Faster" arrow design across the top of the helmet has proven very popular, it seems...

Julian Bailey:

Perdo Diniz:

Carlos Pace:

Derek Daly

Given that only Pace happens to be a race-winner among this list, you might question whether or not the helmet arrow actually works!

The design could upset the ever so crucial aerodynamics by pointing the wrong way. My other hypothesis is that it isn't a "Go Faster" arrow but an arrow of innuendo.

The rationale behind Daly's helmet design was that, should he ever become unconscious after a crash, the marshalls would at least know where his head should be facing. Or something like that. According to Derek himself...
