Reject of the Race - Monaco 2024

Post by Londoner »

We've only done half a lap and yet I feel we've got the nominations sewn up already.

1. Kevin Magnussen. I think we've seen the last of this idiot in Formula 1. Would be the most justified mid-season sacking since Nelson Piquet Jr in 2009.

2. Esteban Ocon. A frankly ridiculous move to perform on any driver in the first place, but to do so on your TEAM MATE?! Did he have a flashback to Gasly kissing his girlfriend when they were teenagers or something at that exact moment?!

1. Lewis Hamilton - "I forgot this was an f1 race and I should drive fast", if he'd been ahead of max he could have slowed him and given Russel an overtake, easy points lost

2. Lance Stroll - Daddy hired me my own personal world champion to keep the other drivers away from me and then I threw away the 15 second gap he bought me by binning a corner

1. Magnussen: Just give him the race ban already.

2. Ocon: Rule 1 in Motorsport, never collide/crash a teammate.

1. Estaban Ocon. Stupid move on his teammate that only took himself out, got a grid drop for the next race and made his team so angry that there is even talk about benching him for the next race. What a great result Estaban.

2 Kevin magnussen. Very lucky that the stewards are not taking any further action. Though if this continues I wonder if Haas will decide to take him out before the end of the season.

Hm. Lance Stroll. Your teammate/lapdog gives you a free pitstop by holding everyone up and then you manage to bin it by going off. Brilliant.

Hm HRH Lewis Hamilton. 'You didn't tell me I had to push on my outlap' well I thought it would be obvious Hammy.

1) Kevin Magnussen: A complete scuppering of not just his race, but his teammate and Perez as well.

2) Esteban Ocon: Smashing into his teammate is very much reject-worthy.

Dishonourable Mention: Lance Stroll - Not exactly doing a good job of obscuring the fact that he has a nepotism drive.

Perhaps it was appropriate in a way that you'd initially accidentally double posted, because some might feel that the race itself deserved to be nominated twice.

There's an argument for the stewards not wanting to penalise Magnussen for colliding with Perez deserving a mention. There have been many cynically suggesting that no steward wants to be the one that gives a driver enough penalty points for them to be banned for a race, and the decision to not take any action against Magnussen, whilst choosing to penalise Ocon for his clash with Gasly, only adds fuel to that fire.

Firstly, it has to be said that Hamilton did actually set the fastest lap, so he does seem to have been pushing hard - it's just that Red Bull reacted quickly enough to compensate for it.

Secondly, I doubt it would have made any difference to the end result, given that, despite a massive gap in tyre performance, we saw how Russell held Verstappen at bay fairly easily. I suspect that, if Hamilton had been within Max's pit stop window, Red Bull would have left Verstappen out and run the same strategy as Russell did, and you'd have probably ended up with the same result anyway.

Ocon: 2023 hero to 2024 zero, and it was on his teammate no less

Stroll: He was given all the advantage by Alonso and then stuffed away any chance of points with a basic mistake

HM: Magnussen, I’ve said my piece about him in the last couple of races and this is a new low, I honestly wouldn’t have been shocked had he received the last penalty points to earn a ban, we may have got Bearman in the car as his audition for 2025

HM: Sainz: File that initial start under the old site’s definition of “you lucky b***ard”. How different the race might have been without that.

HM: Red Bull: Not at the races all weekend and now under serious threat for the constructors championship at least

Ocon used to be the young driver most likely to bring the car home, but it seems he’s regressed.
It's just unbelievable...that Formula 1 could be such a ridiculous melange of idiots.

(1=) Ocon - we know he wants to leave Alpine but getting kicked out after 1/4 season would not be helpful to his career

(1=) Magunssen - even if he was not at fault, he should be thinking about the potential race ban if he stuffs up again and this was it

Ok K-Mag and Estie Bestie were no doubt worse but I'm surprised nobody is saying Checo - he should have never been qualifying that far down. He's putting his team's constructors championship at risk as well as not providing Max with any support (like Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes all have both drivers close to each other it could really prove a problem for Max too. Though it does make stuff more interesting!). The thing is he might well keep his seat because there's nobody better who won't upset the team's equilibrium of having a clear #1 and #2.

1. K-Mag - Anyone would think he actually wants to be banned at this rate.

2. Ocon - Okay! We get it! You and your team-mate hate each other but that doesn't excuse such idiotic manoeuvres like that! As if the team don't have enough on the plate at the moment. Almost like the Prost drivers at Austria in 2000 all over again. At least Gasly survived and went on to open his 2024 points account.

As others have said, first lap antics are obvious nominations, as is Perez.

In other news, Sam Bird in race 2 in Shanghai, the weather delaying the start of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Sweepstakes, and the weather at Snetterton playing havoc for the BTCC tace meeting.

Also, I suppose Max Verstappen massively underperformed relative to expectations.

1. Kevin Magnussen: If the stewards won't penalize that, then the FIA needs to revoke his superlicense. He has no place at the top level of motorsport anymore.
2. Esteban Ocon: Took himself out by crashing into his teammate. That's a slam dunk ROTR

HM: The stewards for not investigating Magnussen. Perez didn't squeeze Magnussen. The latter ran out of room but refused to yield as usual and caused a colossal wreck. To decline investigating is criminal.

1. Kevin Magnussen - probably should have backed out.

2. Sergio Perez - Saw Magnussen coming, did absolutely nothing about it

Hello together

I usually just read along in this forum, but now I really had to create an account to ask this question:

Perez clearly turned his head and looked in the rear-view mirror. And yet he didn't give Kevin any more space. There is enough footage from other years to prove that two cars can drive up to the casino side by side. You are now of the opinion that Kevin should have backed off because he should have seen the collision?

At the same time, you blame Ocon for the crash. At the apex (white and red curb) he was one tyre diameter ahead of Gasly with the front tyres. Following the same logic, you could now simply say that Gasly should have prevented the crash and not continued to squeeze into the gap between the wall and Ocon.

So, yes:
Gasly saw Ocon coming, did absolutely nothing about it.
and
Gasly: probably should have backed out.

Just read Autosport's ratings: Checo was awarded (for want of a better word) a rating of ONE. Even K-Mag and Estie Bestie got 2!!

(Yet Autosport are also saying he is closing in on a contract extension - probably because anyone better might derail Max presumably).

Haas- Got busted cheating, and forced to start in the back at Monte Carlo of all places. K-Mag then wipes out 1/4 of the field including his teammate, and the team is then forced to apologize and coddle said teammate, who is leaving next year!

Alex Brundle - For spending the red flag period blaming Perez and only Perez and calling for a one race ban for him. Bad takes run in the family I guess.

Race Control - They do half a lap but have no order so they reset the field for the restart? Really?

Ryan Hunter Reay - Saw Magnussen's bonehead move and repeated it nearly exactly 8 hours later in Indy with nearly the same result.

Honda - 4 engine failures at Indy, including our own Doc Bakers rooting interest Kat Legge. 9 out of the top 12 ended up being Chevy powered.

Shannon Spake - FOX's NASCAR studio host kept repeating an incorrect ruling during the rain delay. When her cohost (politely) corrected her, she freaked out and threw a tantrum about being "called out on live TV by a coworker". Cue awkward stares into the camera.

NASCAR - went into a rain delay at 9:30. Began drying the track about 11:30. Had track dry by 1am, called drivers to their cars, then said "Nah" and declared the race official at 1:14.

From what has been said, it sounds like it was more of a case of human error than intentionally trying to cheat (especially given Monaco is probably the race where DRS is particularly ineffective).

In that case, the problem was that whomever set the DRS flap up measured the gap in the middle of the wing, which was the point at which the slot gap was widest on the first iteration of wing. However, the modified version for Monaco had a slightly different profile, which meant the slot gap was now slightly wider at the edges than in the middle. Unfortunately, the person who was checking the wing did not realise that and checked the middle of the wing - so, whilst the gap there was OK, the edges wasn't.

To be fair to Komatsu, at least he's accepted that those back in the factory should have given clearer guidance to the mechanics setting the wings up on track, although he's also planning to avoid pointing fingers at different parties.

True that. I was indeed disappointed. I will always remember her doing this in an F3 car at Rockingham in the UK in around 2003...

1. Sergio Perez - Again, after a good start into the year, loosing momentum and qualifying at the bottom of the grid. And wondering, why Marko doesn't want to give him a 2 year deal.

2. McLaren - For still milking a dead person for their own benefit and moneymaking.

3. Everyone, who jumps the Senna-train these days and just forget, that 31 other drivers have been killed during a Grand Prix weekend, and 7 while testing. Why is everyone talking about Senna, but not loosing on word about the other 38 drivers?

HM - Sergio Perez - Wouldn't have been caught up in that crash if he didn't get eliminated in Q1.
