List of drivers that start their own team

Post by f1-gast »

Emerson Fittipaldi
Dan Gurney
Graham Hill
Gerard Larrousse
Guy Ligier
Arturo Merzario

Jackie Stewart

I didn't list Prost since he just bought existing team, but mostly these have started their own from the scratch.

Fittipaldi's team was set up by Wilson Fittipaldi, who also drove the car, then Emerson went there once he left McLaren ...

But wilson also drove for other teams before he started copersugar-fitti
And as far as i know Emerson was also involved with starting the team, because he wanted to help his brother in his F1 carrier.

If I'm not mistaken, Johnny Claes created the Écurie Belge, which might have become the Équipe Nationale Belge later, but they could also have been separate teams.

Also, Louis Rosier created the Écurie Rosier, but I don't think you should count these kind of teams, because they seem more like privateers entering under a fancy name. (Then you would also have to count Guy Ligier's one-off effort (I think he DNQ'd even) in a Cooper sometime in the sixties when listing Ligier, and those are definitely not the same team.)

You're right, Claes did create the Ecurie Belge, which later merged with fellow driver Jacques Swaters' Ecurie Francorchamps into the Equipe Nationale Belge.

Ooh, I see. Was Écurie Francorchamps the same as Écurie Belgique? I'm always a little confused by all these Belgian teams...

there never was an écurie belgique :D

it's simple, the écurie francorchamps (jacques swaters) and écurie belge(johnny claes) got together to form the écurie nationale belge (also known as ENB, which involved drivers as pilette, gendebien, frere and bianchi (i'm not sure about mairesse)) because all these drivers also drove for other teams in the meantime, this is where it's getting complicated. For example did gendebien drive in a yellow works ferrari some times, and at other times in a yellow ENB-ferrari.
to make things complicated, these teams also competed in sportscars (frere and gendebien where multiple le mans winners, some of their attemps probably in an ENB-car)

the probable reason for the merge between EF and EB was claes suffering from tubercululosis, of which he died not long after that.
I don't know what i want and i want it now!
