Predicament Predictions - 2010 Season Review

This doesn't count for anything major points-wise but this is something just for abit of fun to temporarily relieve boredom (And if you beat Mario you get infinite bragging rights :lol: ). Anyways the deadline for this is when Jamie and Enoch post their season review.

Does it count for any points at all? If it does, I may have made a Sedgwick Speech in assuming my fourth-place position in the championship.

Welll...

2010 Season Review:

Top 10 Drivers:
1. Vettel (let's face it, after Korea, he stood up, taking three wins and driving like there's no tomorrow is something worthy)
2. Kubica
3. Webber
4. Rosberg
5. Hamilton
6. Sutil
7. Alonso
8. Kobayashi
9. Button
10. Schumacher

Rookie of the year: Kobayashi - oh easily he is in my eyes
Team of the year: Renault - Enoch can eat the humble pie after his preview :D
Most improved: Sutil - with only one crashfest in Korea
New team of the year: Lotus
Drive of the year: Kubica at Monaco - In qualify, he drove his heart and soul out
Infinite Improbability Driver of the Year: Kobayashi - From zero to constant midfielder, getting points when he could

Reject of the year podium
1. Liuzzi
2. X-Trac
3. Bridgestone

I agree with you there. Bridgestone made bunker tyres.

If drivers have to be only in it:
1. Liuzzi
2. Schumacher
3. Senna

Again, I agree with you there.

Worst Team of the year: Virgin - From a badly designed car, lacking the capability to finish a full race distance, to beating HRT, but not on results!
Deadbeat teammate of the year: Massa
Epic Fail of the year: Di Grassi at Japan

Wow. I think this is the first time ever that someone has initiated a forum thread based on predicting what I am going to think. :lol:

I can say this - there's a backlog of site stuff to do including the Abu Dhabi review and the Brazil/Abu Dhabi podcast before I sit down to write the season review (in what time I have left before Christmas given that I am involved in a four-week court hearing starting next week). But I have already pretty much settled on the driver rankings for this year ... and some of you are getting mighty close to reading my mind.

Well, for a while it looked quite probable that might happen because I wasn't sure if I'd even be able to post in this thread, but I've been able to find some time to do so.
Well, I think that I'll give this a go and see what happens - it should lead to some very interesting results.

2010 Season Review:

The Good:
Top 10 Drivers:
1. Kubica (for some stunning drives, such as in Monaco and Spa, and being by far the most consistent driver in the top despite having inferior machinery to most of the top runners)
2. Rosberg (again, considering the quality of the car he had, he pulled out some very surprising results on merit)
3. Alonso (perhaps not a popular nomination, but to almost take the title having been 47 points behind at one point, with such a strong chain of victories and podium finishes at the end of the season, is impressive by anbody's standards)
4. Vettel (his speed is unquestionably strong, but I still have a few reservations about his judgement when trying to pass and his strategic ability)
5. Hamilton (typically for him, there were some really impressive drives - to control the race at Spa in such mixed conditions was impressive - mixed with some rash actions, like his move on Massa in Monza. OK, some of that came out of overdriving what was perhaps the third best car on the grid, but I suppose that it is part of his nature)
6. Button (to go to Mclaren and still be able to hold his head high after what was, at times, a difficult season, is respectable. He sometimes lacked outright pace, but was one of the bolder drivers on strategy (one area where he had a small advantage), and ended up with a lot more points then he should have based on where he qualified)
7. Webber (I'm sorry to put him further down the list, but at the end of the season, Webber seemed to shrink away from the title challenge instead of rising to it. He did take some very strong victories, but at the end his mental state seemed to collapse).
8. Kobayashi (He had a pretty difficult start to the season, and for a while it did set him back. He did have some stunning drives, like Valencia and Suzuka, mixed with a few shockers like Singapore, but next year will be a sterner test fom him as he has to now lead the team and fend off a promising rookie driver).
9. Barrichello (The old warhorse still has some fight left in him, and still capable of showing rookies elsewhere the way home. Again there were a few highlights, like Valencia, and his development prowess is starting to turn Williams around).
10. Kovalainen (others put him down in jest, but Kovalainen has genuinely donw well this year. He cemented Lotus Racing's 10th place in the standings with surprising finishes in adverse conditions, like Korea, and generally risen well to the challenge of guiding a rookie team. Next year, however, we will have to see if he can score a few points for Lotus Racing if they can fulfill their ambition of making it onto a level playing field with the lower midfield teams).

Rookie of the year: Kobayashi (both on points and in achievements, Kobayashi has shown good promise and pace)
Team of the year: Renault (given where they were over the winter, and in recent years, they have done well with the resources they have)
Most improved: Sutil (had a few rough races, especially towards the end of the year as Force India's pace waned, but now looks much more like a polished racing driver when compared to his earlier performances)
New team of the year: Lotus
Drive of the year: Kubica at Spa (to finish on the podium in a race which really should not have favoured his car, and fairly close to Webber, was great to watch, even if he did blow a chance at finishing second with a botched pit stop)
Infinite Improbability Driver of the Year: Kubica

The Bad:

Reject Podium* :
1. X-Trac (for supplying inadequate components, such that two of their customers have fled to other suppliers and the third only uses them with caution)
2. Liuzzi (showed flashes of promise, but just couldn't sustain that sort of form regularly)
3. Mercedes GP (by their own admission, they fell short this year with a flawed design and repeated problems with upgrades taking too long to sort out. There are rumours that the Board of Directors are disappointed with their lack of success, so Mercedes GP have to improve over the winter, and fast).

Worst Team of the year: HRT (OK, Virgin Racing finished behind them, mainly thanks to Chandhok's 14th in Australia, but the fact that HRT are openly discussing pay drivers, coupled to a conspicuous lack of progress on a 2011 car and essentially no development on their 2010 car is worrying)
Deadbeat teammate of the year: Petrov
Epic Fail of the year: De La Rosa in Malaysia - as it summed up the problems that Sauber had with the Ferrari engines this season, and it is possible that Di Grassi crashed due to suspension failure.
Martin Brundle, on watching a replay of Grosjean spinning:
"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"

Drivers ranking:

1. Vettel - some mistakes outweighed by impressively dominant performances, a deserved championship in the end;
2. Kubica - after a slump in 2009, the Pole rebuilt the 2008 momentum, deserves a shot in a top team;
3. Alonso - despite the whining and the attitude, he made an impressive charge at mid-season to almost win the WDC;
4. Webber - the underdog surprised at first, but fumbled in the end;
5. Hamilton - like Webber, when things got tough, Hamilton slipped down in the table;
6. Rosberg - humilated Schumacher but got sometimes the treatment of a second driver;
7. Barrichello - the end is near, but he is pushing as hard as he did in his first years;
8. Button - two great drives that earned him two victories and many performances shadowed by Hamilton;
9. Hulkenberg - the rookie of the year, showed great improvement during the season;
10. Kobayashi - at least he provides a lot of fun for the spectators;

11. Glock - how come this guy is driving such a crappy car?;
12. Sutil - the legend says that he will win GPs and make a bid on the WDC some day;
13. Kovalainen - do the crime, pay the time;
14. Alguersuari - still a raw talent, but at least he was noticed;
15. Petrov - a lot of overdriving but still made an impression on occasions
16. Massa - trampled by Alonso, he has to look for new opportunities somewhere else;
17. Schumacher - probably had fun during the year, but wasted Mercedes efforts and put others in risk;
18. Trulli - please, hang up the keys and let someone else earn a chance;
19. Chandhok - decent performances in a horrible car;
20. Heidfeld - discrete as ever;
21. Senna - a nuisance in many GPs for the frontrunners;
22. Yamamoto - out of his league as usual;
23. Di Grassi - difficult to evaluate a driver in such bad car, but he made no good impression;

24. Buemi - did anyone notice see this drone in the track?
25. De La Rosa - Pete Sauber dug up this zombie from the motor netherworld and got what he deserved!
26. Liuzzi - paled in comparison to Sutil, noticed for many mistakes, crashes, etc.

not ranked: Klien

1. Robert Kubica - For constantly being quicker than Massa and the Mercs in an inferior car and mixing it with the championship contenders on a regular basis.
2. Nico Rosberg - Trounced Schumacher and got on the podium a few times in a car that clearly had no right being there.
3. Sebastian Vettel - Deserved to be World Champion, unlucky in Bahrain, Australia and Korea and still won the world championship. His 70/30 incident with Webber and collision with Button cost him top spot.
4. Adrian Sutil - Matured greatly in 2010 and outdrove his Force India. Also shown that he deserves better machinery than he got at the end of the season.
5. Mark Webber - Watching him fight for the title was a nice surprise, unbeatable on some occasions but simply not as quick as Vettel.
6. Fernando Alonso - Drove like a double World Champion at times, made a few costly mistakes.
7. Kamui Kobayashi - Is it possible for a straight man to be in love with this guy? We're all in love with this driving, and with good reason. Valencia and Suzuka stood out as top drives.
8. Lewis Hamilton - A very feisty driver but often too aggressive. This may have cost him the title.
9. Jenson Button - Done better than most people expected and shown that he could actually pass. Lewis at Turkey and Fernando at Canada.
10. Rubens Barrichello - Showed that he really wants to stay longer in F1, and the way he drove this season, he really deserves to be.
11. Heikki Kovalainen - Payed the price for being crap at McLaren, may have restored his reputation somewhat.
12. Timo Glock - Why is he at such a crap team, he's much more deserving of a decent drive than some of the midfield runners.
13. Vitaly Petrov - Overdriving the car wasn't wise, but he shown enough speed. Calming down a bit would have increased his points tally.
14. Nico Hulkenberg - Pole position was fantastic to see, didn't fare too badly and it's a shame he ain't at Williams for 2011.
15. Nick Heidfeld - Scored the same points in 3 races as PDLR did in 14 races. Kept the car on the road and wasn't too slow. Translation for the second sentence, Vintage Heidfeld.
16. Felipe Massa - Didn't win a single race in a championship contending car, and apart from Germany, was nowhere near race winning pace.
17. Jarno Trulli - Wasn't too bad, but wasn't as impressive as Kovalainen, butI think it's time he considers retirement. Or face nomination for the "Hang up the Keys" award.
18. Karun Chandhok - Was faster and more impressive than Senna, hope to see him back soon.
19. Michael Schumacher - Was crap all through the season, improvement towards the end stopped him from being a ROTY contender.
20. Jaime Alguersuari - Was more impressive than Buemi, but still drove like a fool for a while.
21. Pedro De La Rosa - Wasn't as bad as people say he was, just seemed dull compared to Kobayashi, and wasn't as fast.
22. Sakon Yamamoto - Wasn't quite as bad as we expected, kept getting closer and closer to Senna's pace. Still isn't worthy of an F1 drive though.
23. Sebastien Buemi - Didn't do anything noteworthy at the start, done well at Canada and Valencia, he led at Canada remember. Acted like an idiot other than that.
24. Bruno Senna - DIsappointed me, wasn't ROTY material, but was expected to live up to his name, or at least be quicker than Chandhok.
25. Lucas Di Grassi - Closer to the HRT's than Glock and the Lotuses. May have been a rookie in a crap car, but still should have done better.
26. Vitantonio Liuzzi - Reject of the year, and with good reason. Simply not fast enough and too many Q1 eliminations whilst Sutil was constantly challenging for and scoring points.

Christian Klien is not ranked due to only taking part in 3 races but he definitely wouldn't be on the ROTY podium as he wasn't too bad.
I like the way Snrub thinks!

Constructors Ranking

1. Red Bull - veni, vidi, vici. Best car, best driver, unbeatable except for some odd tracks. Some mistakes and misfortunes yielded chances to the others, but in the end, they snatched the two trophies. And they look very strong for being the main contender in 2011.
2. Renault - after the 2009 disaster, they bounced back and showed why they were champions 4 years ago. Kubica fitted like a glove in the team, which gave ample support for the Polish. However, an identity crisis is lurking in the near horizon, which might compromise the team.
3. McLaren - appeared as the strongest opponent to the Austrian team, but a development slump near the end, besides a couple of Hamilton's mistakes, put them out of contention. Still, it is expected that they will adapt quickly to Pirelli tyres and keep the opposition against Red Bull.
4. Williams - the struggle continues. For an underfunded team and a (anemic) Cosworth-powered, Williams showed great form battling Mercedes and Renault. The future does not look good as more sponsors are set to jump ship.
5. Ferrari - at first they looked like the third force in the grid, until Alonso made his magic and Ferrari put the Spaniard on title contention, but in the end, the monumental strategic mistake in Abu Dhabi put everything to lose. For 2011, they will make a bid on the WDC with Alonso.
6. Sauber - you have to feel for Pete for his effort to rescue his team from extinction. He inherited no BrawnGP 001 and was plagued with early reliability problems. In the end, he was challenging Williams and Force India, but still had to scrap for points, which should be no different in 2011. At least Kobayashi delivered much entertainment!
7. Force India - the staff loss took a heavy toll on the Silverstone team. They started the year on par with Renaul and dropped back the form until they were battling with Sauber and even Toro Rosso. Mallya has to get a grip quickly on his team, otherwise 2011 looks bleak for them.
8. Mercedes - one word: disappointment. As an excuse, it can be said that the financial problems of Brawn in 2009 took a toll on the development of the car, plus Schumacher did not adapt well to the new tyres, but still they were way below par for a title contender. Also focusing on recovering Schummy, while Rosberg was at his peak seemed like an unwise decision in the end. But they should not be overlooked for 2011.
9. Lotus - for a fledging team that received such a late admittance to the grid, Lotus did a respectable job. They arrived to the February tests with a car, showed to be well structured and to have a plan for 2011. They made good appearances in Canada and China, but since they changed focus in mid-season for 2011, their improvement was halted. But of course, as a new team, they wouldn't end the season without a mess, which is the judicial battle for the Team Lotus name.
10. Toro Rosso - finally Red Bull junior morphed into Minardi. Their two cars were many times mobile chicanes that seemed only faster than the new teams. There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for them.
11. HRT - as excuse, the team could hope for very little after an 11th hour rescue made By Carabante. The Dallara car was awful and ugly, but what really made them a reject team was Colin Kolles antics towards their drivers. The merry-go-round with the hapless Chadhok / Yamamoto / Klien reminded me of those of some teams in the 1990s. If they make it to the grid in 2011, that will be hailed as a miracle.
12. Virgin - well, they had some odd combination that did not yield anything on track. Manor was a decent racing effort in the base categories but did not have the structure for F-1, so they allied with the Virgin Group which from half-hearted sponsor of Brawn becam a half-hearted partner of Manor, and they resurrected Nick Wirth for F-1, which came up with this "virtual" car. However, the CFD program must have been fed with the wrong parameters as they came for instance with a undrsized fuel tank in the car, which is one of the most bizarre mistakes ever in designing a car. By mid-season, Richard Branson seemed set to lose the bet against Tony Fernandes and uninterested in the future of his 2011, which has gone east! The only glimpses of good performances came with the underrated Glock, who seemed trapped in this team, which might actually end virgin...
