The backdrop of Bristol in 1982 is pretty rejectful, but F1 powerboats going round at speeds of 90mph through the Floating Harbour is brilliant. Powerboating's equivalent to Monaco is what Bristol was commonly known as. And with Murray Walker commentating! What didn't that man do?!

This race is also quite significant in terms of powerboat racing history for those interested. Billy Seebold in the Tissot-sponsored boat (the one that looks like an early 80s Ligier) was racing in the F1 race that day to prove a point. The F1 series had adopted an "unlimited" formula that saw 2 stroke, 3.5 litre, 400hp V8 engines bolted onto the back of plywood open cockpit hulls. Many felt it was too unsafe, such as Seebold, who instead competed in the 2 litre "ON" series which was known as Formula Grand Prix, rather than its unrestricted counterpart, F1. That event in Bristol saw both series come together on the same weekend, hence why Seebold was there. He had two engines for his boat, a 2 litre one for the ON races, and a 2.4 litre on which complied with the F1 regulations, allowing him to enter those races too. He then put on a masterful demonstration in the F1 race showing how his underpowered boat could outperform the "monsters" regularly racing in F1. At the time, although an impressive spectacle, it didn't do much for either class, and eventually F1 would leave Formula Grand Prix behind, but not before the hideous 1984 season where 4 drivers died, and most of the rest withdrew for the final races of the season, prompting massive safety changes to the designs of the boats and smaller engine sizes in an attempt to cut speeds.

I've only recently started getting into F1 powerboat racing, and it's tricky finding any information on it at all really, the official website has results that only go back to the late 1990s, and before that, individual race results are anyone's guess! It's a shame that as the premier racing category for powerboats, that it doesn't have the interest or coverage that it deserves. Stramala, you'd like it because Italians are massive in it. Guido Cappellini is a 10 time world champion!

The thing is, it has the potential to be really good, but those crappy computer animations at random points are just bloody awful. They don't look anything like the real thing so stand out like a sore thumb. Last year's was far better.
