Karl Popper would like to say something.

The Strong Programme in the Sociology of Knowledge wrote:(...) It is impossible, says Popper, to predict future knowledge. The reason is that any such prediction would itself amount to the discovery of that knowledge. The way we behave depends on what we know so behaviour in the future will depend on this unpredictable knowledge and this too will be unpredictable. (...)

Wait, doesn't this quote just say that we cannot predict the level of knowledge we will have in the future? Therefore this quote isn't really against predicting driver changes but rather predicting what kind of technology level will we have in 2014? So we can make assumptions where which driver will do their driving but we cannot say which team will master the rule changes most successfully?

I think you're reading too much into it. As far as I was able to understand, he just means we cannot predict now what we can know in the future. Obviously, you will agree that there is a lot we don't know now, and that many things will happen in 2013 that will influence the driver market in 2014. If you doubt this at all, imagine what your 2012 prediction at the end of 2010 would have looked like. :P

Not beyond the realms of possibility. Porsche tend to sign on factory drivers for the long haul, Webber is experienced in endurance racing (former Mercedes factory driver), there would be no other top drives left for Webber aside from RBR. True or not, it's certainly believeable.

I think it's legit myself. Mostly because rumours of Webber going to Porsche have been circling around for quite a long time now but I'll wait for Autosport to confirm this,

They've just spoken about it on the live WEC coverage from Silverstone, so my guess is it has some substance to it. Would that be to drive in GT or their LMP1 project though?

Wow, that is interesting stuff. I expect Mark to go balls out now for the rest of the year and stick two fingers up to any orders from Red Bull. Good to see a top line driver like him go to the WEC, and for Porsche to get this boost for their project. I suspect he'll end up doing some testing in between F1 races then to get used to the endurance format and help develop the new car.

So the question now is, who will replace him? Can't see it being Buemi, he has a safe job at Toyota in the WEC, so one of the current Toro Rosso drivers? That battle is going to get very interesting over the year!

My money's on Kimi Vicodin...

Former Red Bull ties in the WRC, and would maybe be tempted away from Lotus. There might be something of a large-scale switcheroo if this were the case.

I really want to see Ricciardo in that seat, at the moment he's my favourite of the two Toro Rosso drivers. He seems to have a personality, unlike Jnnn Rcc Vrgnnn, and his pace today showed he has what it takes to race at the front.

Which, until today, has been something of a weak point for him. Meanwhile Vergne has yet to qualify decently....

The Who'll Win Webber's Seat Thread

Post by pasta_maldonado »

Exactly what it says on the tin. With Webber almost certainly moving to LMP1 next year, there's a vacancy at RBR. Currently, these drivers are in contention to fill Webber's boots:

Daniel Ricciardo
Jnnn Rrrccccc Vrrrggnnnnn
Kimi Raikkonen
Sebastian Buemi

Who do you think will win out and impress Horner and co. enough to get the seat?

I'm backing Daniel Ricciardo at the moment, if he can keep up the level of performance he showed in China. He'd be the sensible choice for the team - comes from their driver academy, and quick, but not enough to threaten Vettel.

Ricciardo picked the best possible time to put in that drive. If he can pull off more of those for the rest of the year we might finally see the first STR driver since Vettel to get a promotion to the senior team.

Given the problems with Webber, they need a driver who is competent enough to score points, but not so quick as to give the team headaches with him fighting against Vettel. Basically a driver who is Massa, but maybe ever so slightly closer to the number one driver.

Alternatively they could choose the best possible lineup and try to poach Raikkonen from Lotus. But then, once again, there'd be the scenario of both drivers ignoring any requests from the team, and racing each other wherever possible.

Should Ricciardo's performance today turn out to be a flash in the pan however, and they also fail to secure Raikkonen, I think they could instead go for Nico Hulkenberg.

I don't think this necessitates its own thread however. I suggest it be merged with the 2014 Silly Season thread that already exists...

Well, Ricciardo has had one good race. He will need more of that, matter of fact is Vergne had the upper hand in the part of the weekend that matters against him for most of their time together at STR. Räikkönen would perform badly at Red Bull and I think the team is aware of that, so he is out. We don't know if Buemi has done a good enough job in the simulator, so he is a wildcard as far as his shots at the drive are concerned.

I think if Ferrari don't deliver the goods this year then Alonso could be a contender for the seat. Not sure where that would leave Vettel, maybe they would do a swap.

Raikkonen is a possible but Renault are delivering pretty well.

Kubica....? It's not impossible but unlikely and I for one don't think we'll see him again in F1.

Hulkenberg would be an excellent choice.

I don't think either of the current STR drivers are good enough sadly.

Ataxia's "Far too early and marginally left-field" predictions for 2014 seats

Red Bull - Renault:
Vettel, Raikkonen

Ferrari:
Alonso, Massa

Lotus - Renault:
Hulkenberg, Grosjean

Mercedes:
Hamilton, Rosberg

McLaren - Mercedes:
Button, Perez

Force India - Mercedes:
Sutil, Magnussen/Milky Joe

Toro Rosso - Renault/Ferrari
Ricciardo, da Costa

Sauber - Ferrari:
Bianchi, Frijns (is that too crazy?)

Williams - Renault
Bottas, Maldonado (I see no viable replacements at this time...)

Caterham - Renault
Pic, Rossi

Marussia - Ferrari
Nasr, Vandoorne

Note: No predictions (except the obvious ones) are to be treated with much seriousness. I'm rather clutching at straws, but I think these would be rather interesting pairings.

Kubica in his prime would destroy Vettel. I don't think he'll ever recover fully, but it's still possible that he'll recover to the point where he can still match and beat Vettel. He was so much better than everyone else in 2010 it was silly.

I don't think Kimi or Hulkenberg will get it. As I said in one of the Box threads, Salzburg will put a lot of pressure on Red Bull to promote from within, as otherwise they might start questioning why they are spending so much money on a Driver Development Programme if they're not going to use it.

Buemi won't get it. He's spent two years out of F1. He's not coming back.

Whoever has the better season out of Ricciardo and Vergne will get it, with AFdC getting the second STR seat.
