This was a good chance to score points. Engine failures on both cars are really disappointing. But if Kristensen can keep up this pace, points are only a matter of time.

I am impressed that Inoue finished 8th after staring dead last, and one lap down. However, it sucks that the Zanardi's car retired due to engine problems after an impressive qualifying session. Maybe, my driving lineup is not that bad after all!

Paddock News

Autosport wrote:Honda to enter in 1999?
It has become apparent in recent weeks that Honda have been gearing up for an F1 entry, having built their own V10 engines to satisfy the 3.0L formula the Japanese conglomerate have also considered the buyout of an existing team on which to base their entry. Noises are coming from the Dallara factory that they have been commissioned to design a '99-spec F1 chassis, which may have some links to the Honda rumours. It has been confirmed by Honda president Nobuhiko Kawamoto that Honda "will supply one team on a customer basis", adding further fuel to the fire of a Honda full-scale entry. The company currently have involvement in F1 under the Mugen banner, who supply the Benetton team. It is expected that Mugen will continue their own project into 1999 and 2000.

BAT to buy out Tyrrell?
Ken Tyrrell's eponymous team will potentially receive a surplus of funds ready for 1999 as they have been purchased by British American Tobacco. Set to become British American Racing, the cash injection will be earmarked for next season's chassis and contracts as the team look to return to the front. "The final contract has been drawn up" said BAR MD Craig Pollock. "In the next few days, we expect to hear whether our bid to take over the team will be accepted".

Discontent at Stewart
Jackie Stewart has displayed his concern at the way his own F1 team is being interfered with by the shareholders, remarking that the team has overspent and under-delivered on track. Having come up with a few decent results last year, the board offered both Jos Verstappen and Jarno Trulli lucrative contracts which has detracted much of the budget away from the design and development of the SF02 car. "We're not happy with the car at all" said Stewart, "but the board have interfered with the running of the team. They won't free up funds to sort out the whole aerodynamic package, they're more content with cosying up to Ford. I've told them time and time again, you can't be a little bit pregnant, but they just won't listen."

RACE

An oil leak curtailed Mika Hakkinen's chances of a win at Imola, handing the race trophy to Heinz-Harald Frentzen to open Benetton's account of 1998. Hakkinen took an early lead and looked to be marching to victory. However, as the race was entering its second pitstop phase the Finn lost power and was asked to stop his sickly McLaren, ensuring he lost ground in the championship to team-mate Greg Moore. A heroic performance from home favourite Andrea de Cesaris saw the Italian spend the afternoon fighting in the points, but a botched Sauber pitstop saw de Cesaris retire from the race. Williams recovered a good haul of points as Alesi and Barrichello flanked the podium; this season has been tricky for the Grove outfit as they bed in their new Ford engines. Greg Moore kept his lead by finishing 4th, as Olivier Panis and David Coulthard got some points too.

News Roundup

Autosport wrote:Tyrrell out for 1999, BAR in

Ken Tyrrell has officially sold the Tyrrell team to BAT, ensuring that British American Racing will be on the grid in 1999. Tyrrell had struggled with funds and performance for a number of years, and selling up ensures that the outfit will have a larger budget for the next F1 season.

Honda to buy Stefan GP?

After rumours that Honda were to return to F1 as a manufacturer team, it appears that Zoran Stefanovic's Stefan Grand Prix outfit will be sold to the multi-national Japanese company. "We have made a bid to take over Stefan" said a Honda spokesperson. "The team will become our base for Formula 1 operations, and with the good quality of staff the team already has the deal makes sense."

Al Melling to supply F1 engines

Intrepid engine designer Al Melling is working on a V10 power unit adhering to F1 specifications, it has been reported. The Melling-designed engines will be given the "Powertech" moniker, although projected power figures and engine cost could not be confirmed. They expect to supply a maximum of one customer in 1999.
