Hearing the laughs (and jeers?) as they took the start was harsh, in my opinion. But it was good to hear lots of applause and cheers each time they came towards the end of each lap subsequently. And the fact that you could hear the crowds so, so clearly demonstrates how quiet the cars were.

But the size of the cars relative to the track really did make the cars seem slow. I'm guessing that these school kids have no race licence and so safety is of key importance. In which case, were none of them told how to take the turn one chicane properly? Every lap I saw, there was somebody cutting it, and I can't imagine that they were carrying too much speed into it to miss the apex?

In cars where you do not need to brake (much) for corners, it is harder to maintain momentum and get those slingshot manoeuvres past the people ahead who are doing a similar speed and are also not going to brake (much). So I know I would find it hard to overtake in those machines.

If the guy wants to get his kicks from laughing at school kids, let's just let him. He'll eventually figure out why that's incredibly goddamn sad by himself, and we won't have wasted our time convincing him otherwise.

I'm laughing at comedically slow cars on a circuit wide enough for normal racecars. I'm not "laughing at school kids".

A 1976 video about the future Birmingham SuperPrix. Back then, it was apparently planned to be an F1 race, and to this end, a Brabham was demo'd on a test circuit.

Why this thread? Because the test driver was a man who hadn't made his début yet. His name was Patrick Nève. And the way he pronounces "Monaco" makes it abundantly clear than he's from Liège :P

Most of it still is.

It pains me how I wasn't around when the Birmingham Superprix was an F3000 event.

True but at least they've made an effort to clean up parts of it. It would look a lot better if they ran it round there now.

I've seen that before, it's truly magnificent isn't it?
Some of the roads he's driving on have actually not changed at all!
As those long-time forum members will know, although I wasn't born a Brummie, I've lived here for almost 15 years now. My Father-in-law helped to build the Rotunda!

The 1992 Belgian Grand Prix grid. Highlights include Gianni Morbidelli's abandoned Minardi and Olivier Grouillard relieving himself in the bushes, as well as other reject names you should recognise.

I present to you the Monaco of the Caribbean, the Macau of the West Indies, the legendary Curaçao Grand Prix! A non-championship F3000 round held on an extremely narrow circuit in Willemstad, capital of what was then the Netherlands Antilles, starring Mike Thackwell, Gabriele Tarquini, Claudio Langes and more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPMXqsUMCro

Thanks for this display of all-round nonsense. I spotted the Arrows A6 in the middle of all those F3000 cars straight away - and driven by Slim Borgudd as well. Double hooray!

Tarquini's accident was a bit weird, but having read up on it, I notice that the track was so slippery that they were using wet (!) then qualifying tyres (!!) in the race. Brilliant.

Sauber shared this er, interesting video with Johnny Herbert from 1998 on their Facebook page. It's as bad as some of the college films I've seen (and being a film student myself, I've seen more than my fair share of these), though I mean that in the best possible sense: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol2Ljoo ... e=youtu.be

A 46-year-old Tony Trimmer at the wheel of an ex-F5000 Lola dominating a Formula Libre race on the weekend of Ireland's top circuit racing event... which isn't saying a lot, but anyway, the former Maki man managed to lap the entire field in 16 laps of Mondello Park, back when it measured just under 2 km. The race also features a Larrousse Lola LC88 and the lead commentator makes mention of the announcement of Martin Donnelly (the then-lap record holder) signing for Lotus for 1990.

Jesus. No wonder they don't do Libre races anymore.

Incidentally, I was googling the Leinster Trophy and I came across these video's on their website if anyones interested. The racing is a lot better in the BOSS trophy,

Originally I thought he would have full-up hurdled over the barrier and into the river, making the splashdown unexpected to him and acceptable.

But nope, he goes right leg first, slow and cautious as you like, takes a seat to assess the situation... and stumbles and falls anyway.
