At least next year looks interesting now with all 6 drivers from the top 3 teams out and I see no reason for that pecking order to change unless Ferrari have another shocker. If there's a similar pecking order then I'd put Norris, Ocon as favourites and possibly their teammates depending on how quick they can get up to speed, maybe DrVries if he impresses at Alpha Tauri.
The only excitement is whether Russell breaks Leclerc's win record. :P Without DNFs, I'm expecting that to happen.

I'm predicting Norris for next year – after being runner-up three years in a row (I'm not expecting Ocon to overtake him in the next two races), his championship is long overdue. Piastri is my second favorite, though that could end up going completely wrong.

George Russell won the Sao Paulo sprint race ahead of Norris and polesitter Magnussen. In the race itself, Russell had another strong performance, setting the fastest lap and equaling the record for most wins in a season. Will he be able to break it in Abu Dhabi? Ocon and Stroll took the other two podium spots.

2022 (After twenty-one races):

Russell 504 (17 wins, 2 2nd)

Norris 330 (3 wins, 7 2nd, 4 3rd)
Ocon 301 (1 win, 8 2nd, 5 3rd)
Stroll 203 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Gasly 198 (1 2nd, 4 3rd)
Magnussen 152 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Schumacher 150 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Zhou 134 (1 3rd)
Tsunoda 120 (1 3rd)
Latifi 81 (1 3rd)
De Vries 12 (best result: 4th)

Russell does it – a win in Abu Dhabi sees him break Leclerc's three-year-old record for most wins in a season. Matching the championship results, Norris finishes second (with fastest lap) and Ocon third, Stroll taking fourth place.

Final championship standings for 2022:

Russell 529 (18 wins, 2 2nd)
Norris 349 (3 wins, 8 2nd, 4 3rd)
Ocon 316 (1 win, 8 2nd, 6 3rd)
Stroll 215 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Gasly 204 (1 2nd, 4 3rd)
Magnussen 154 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Schumacher 154 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Zhou 142 (1 3rd)
Tsunoda 130 (1 3rd)

Stroll wins the first race of the season in Bahrain. With Aston Martin looking good, could he be a surprising favorite for the championship? Gasly and Tsunoda take the other two podium spots. The rookies had a very mixed weekend: Sargeant impressed with a fourth place, De Vries was a solid but unspectacular sixth, Piastri failed to finish. Eternal number two Norris also had a difficult start to the season. Zhou set the fastest lap.

2023 (After one race):

Stroll 25 (1 win)
Gasly 18 (1 2nd)
Tsunoda 15 (1 3rd)
Sargeant 12 (best result: 4th)
Magnussen 10 (best result: 5th)
De Vries 8 (best result: 6th)
Zhou 7 (best result: 7th)
Norris 4 (best result: 8th)
Ocon 0 (best result: DNF)
Piastri 0 (best result: DNF)

Not so fast – Stroll fails to score at Jeddah after a car failure. Ocon recovers from his Bahrain disaster to win and set the fastest lap. Gasly takes the championship lead by finishing second again, while Magnussen impresses with a third place. Tsunoda is currently second in the WDC on sheer consistency!

2023 (After two races):

Gasly 36 (2 2nd)
Tsunoda 27 (1 3rd)
Ocon 26 (1 win)
Stroll 25 (1 win)
Magnussen 25 (1 3rd)
Zhou 17 (best result: 5th)
Sargeant 16 (best result: 4th)
De Vries 16 (best result: 2 6th)
Piastri 6 (best result: 7th)
Norris 6 (best result: 8th)

Stroll takes his second win of the season in a chaotic race in Melbourne. After a difficult start to 2023, McLaren had a much better day with Norris finishing second and Piastri taking his first career podium in third. Only five drivers managed to finish, although all the others (including former championship leader Gasly) were also classified. Fastest lap was set by Stroll.

2023 (After three races):

Stroll 51 (2 wins)
Gasly 44 (2 2nd)
Tsunoda 37 (1 3rd)
Ocon 32 (1 win)
Zhou 29 (best result: 4th)
Magnussen 26 (1 3rd)
Norris 24 (1 2nd)
Piastri 21 (1 3rd)
De Vries 20 (best result: 2 6th)

Stroll won the sprint race at Baku, continuing his streak of strong performances. Piastri and Magnussen also scored a nice haul of points.

Stroll also won the actual Grand Prix ahead of Norris and Tsunoda. He is now more than a win's worth of points ahead of Gasly who could only manage a sixth place and the fastest lap.

2023 (After four races):

Stroll 84 (3 wins)
Gasly 57 (2 2nd)
Tsunoda 52 (2 3rd)
Norris 44 (2 2nd)
Magnussen 42 (1 3rd)
Piastri 40 (1 3rd)
Ocon 39 (1 win)
Zhou 34 (best result: 4th)
De Vries 23 (best result: 2 6th)
Sargeant 22 (best result: 4th)

Don't discount the McLarens. If they continue to improve, they may provide a real challenge for Lance.

Otherwise if he can get an early enough lead with the others tripping over each other, this could be the most popular championship of all time.

None of them really impressed this time: Stroll could only manage a fifth place, Norris was seventh, Piastri ninth.

Gasly takes his first win of the season in Miami, helping his championship hopes quite a bit. Fellow Alpine driver Ocon takes second, and Magnussen finishes third. Fastest lap goes to Stroll.

2023 (After five races):

Stroll 95 (3 wins)
Gasly 82 (1 win, 2 2nd)
Tsunoda 64 (2 3rd)
Ocon 57 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Magnussen 57 (2 3rd)
Norris 50 (2 2nd)
Piastri 42 (1 3rd)

Stroll crashes out in Monaco, giving us an Alpine 1-2 and a new championship leader. Ocon takes his second win of the season. Gasly's second place and fastest lap allow him to overtake Stroll. Norris takes third place ahead of team mate Piastri.

2023 (After six races):

Gasly 101 (1 win, 3 2nd)
Stroll 95 (3 wins)
Ocon 82 (2 wins, 1 2nd)
Tsunoda 70 (2 3rd)
Norris 65 (2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Magnussen 59 (2 3rd)
Piastri 54 (1 3rd)

Incredible that Stroll, given his actual season right now, is doing so damn well in the standings regardless

An intra-Alpine championship against Lance Stroll, I must say, must be among the least inspiring fights for the championship I have ever seen on this thread! I would honestly prefer Tsunoda to be a dark horse and steal the championship at the last minute.

I had to go back through this to remind myself when Hulkenberg won (because he obviously isn't in the 2023 line-up). I'm stunned it was as early as 2012 as I don't remember him doing that much that year apart from Brazil when he was battling for the lead with the McLarens. Just lots of minor points finishes which were big results with 9 top drivers eliminated. And Checo beat Max in 2017 despite being in a pink panther? The mind boggles.

Those were more by consistency than anything else – Grosjean lost a lot of points due to his crashes (including his ban, 8 times not classified to Hülkenberg's 2) and Verstappen due to reliability problems (7 times not classified to Pérez's 1).

In Canada, Ocon takes his third win of the season. Stroll is classified second and Piastri third after a five-second penalty dropped Norris to fifth. Surprisingly, fastest lap was set by eighth-placed Magnussen.

2023 (After eight races):

Stroll 138 (4 wins, 1 2nd)
Ocon 125 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Gasly 125 (1 win, 3 2nd)
Tsunoda 88 (2 3rd)

Are you perhaps insinuating that Stroll might not be champion material? :pantano:

On another note, I do wonder if Norris will ever get a title under this.

Despite everything, Stroll is looking strong (but maybe not as strong as he should) at the moment! I'd imagine Norris will have a chance in the future... But for now, he's this championship's version of Stirling Moss.

In Austria, Stroll wins the sprint ahead of Ocon and Norris. But the Grand Prix is a different story – Norris takes his first win of the year. Stroll gets second (with fastest lap) ahead of Gasly who was demoted by a post-race penalty. Everyone finished.

2023 (After nine races):

Stroll 165 (4 wins, 2 2nd)
Gasly 143 (1 win, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ocon 140 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Norris 111 (1 win, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Tsunoda 91 (2 3rd)
Piastri 88 (2 3rd)

Norris and McLaren are starting to look like possible championship contenders, as he wins with Piastri in a career-best second. Sargeant gets his first podium in third, leaving De Vries as the only driver who hasn't taken a top three (or even four) finish so far. Stroll was demoted one place to fourth after a penalty, but his points lead grows thanks to Ocon scoring no points and Gasly only being classified in 8th (thanks to Stroll himself). Fastest lap goes to Norris.

2023 (After ten races):

Stroll 177 (4 wins, 2 2nd)
Gasly 147 (1 win, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ocon 140 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Norris 137 (2 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Piastri 106 (1 2nd, 2 3rd)
Tsunoda 99 (2 3rd)
Zhou 93 (1 3rd)
Magnussen 72 (2 3rd)
De Vries 56 (best result: 5th)
Sargeant 53 (1 3rd)

We're down to a (ridiculous) nine-car grid, as De Vries was dropped by AlphaTauri.

McLaren's streak of great performances continues with another 1-2. Norris takes his third win (and fastest lap) in a row and Piastri gets another second place. Despite a recent downturn in performance, Stroll only loses one point of his lead over second place by finishing third while both Alpines retired early in the race.

2023 (After eleven races):

Stroll 192 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Norris 163 (3 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Gasly 147 (1 win, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ocon 140 (3 wins, 2 2nd)
Piastri 124 (2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Tsunoda 111 (2 3rd)
Zhou 103 (1 3rd)
Magnussen 80 (2 3rd)
Sargeant 59 (1 3rd)

Having more than half the field eliminated is mental but I guess part of the reason for that is teams seemingly preferring experienced drivers like Haas and now Alpha Tauri. Indeed of the bottom 4 teams, all of them have a driver eliminated with Albon and Bottas completing the group.

If Norris wins this, he more than deserves it. Stroll somehow throwing this one away would be quite legendary. Fascinating too just how quickly Alpine's early challenge has evaporated considering Gasly was leading the championship for a time. Now that real life Aston appear to be getting weaker and weaker, Gasly finds himself almost two wins behind Stroll

Piastri wins the Spa sprint race ahead of Gasly and Norris. Stroll is down in fifth.

Norris wins the Belgian Grand Prix after a difficult start, further improving his title chances. Ocon finishes second and Stroll third. Piastri had a much worse day, being the only retirement of the race. Fastest lap went to Zhou.

2023 (After twelve races):

Stroll 211 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Norris 194 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 1 3rd)
Gasly 164 (1 win, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)

Norris is actually going to do this, isn't he? With a decent buffer of points between himself and his teammate, he could very easily mop up this title ahead of Stroll and the Alpines. And remember, this was a bad day for McLaren!

Gasly wins a chaotic race in Zandvoort. Norris' streak of four wins comes to an end, but he continues his great performances with a second place ahead of team mate Piastri (who set the fastest lap). Stroll takes a fifth place, but his championship hopes are starting look much worse at the rate Norris is catching him. Guest driver Lawson finishes in sixth – impressive given the circumstances.

2023 (After thirteen races):

Stroll 221 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Norris 212 (4 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Gasly 189 (2 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ocon 175 (3 wins, 3 2nd)
Piastri 148 (2 2nd, 3 3rd)

Magnussen 93 (2 3rd)
Sargeant 64 (1 3rd)

An excellent performance from Gasly when Norris fluffed up with strategy. Stroll seemed to spend the whole race in last, he's so going to choke this season isn't he.

In Monza, the expected thing happened. Norris takes the championship lead with another win while Stroll only manages a seventh place (second to last of the finishers). However, the real star of the weekend is Liam Lawson who finishes second in his second Grand Prix, better than any of his predecessor' results. Piastri's third place and fastest lap complete another good race for McLaren.

2023 (After fourteen races):

Norris 237 (5 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Stroll 227 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Gasly 197 (2 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ocon 175 (3 wins, 3 2nd)
Piastri 164 (2 2nd, 4 3rd)
Tsunoda 129 (2 3rd)
Zhou 124 (1 3rd)
Magnussen 97 (2 3rd)
Sargeant 76 (1 3rd)

In Singapore, Norris takes another win. He's building a significant championship lead (further helped by another fastest lap point), as Stroll failed to start after a crash in qualifying and Ocon is starting to drop out of contention with a retirement. Gasly is doing his best with a second place ahead of Piastri, but it might not be enough...

2023 (After fifteen races):

Norris 263 (6 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Stroll 227 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Gasly 215 (2 wins, 4 2nd, 1 3rd)
Piastri 179 (2 2nd, 5 3rd)
Ocon 175 (3 wins, 3 2nd)
Zhou 132 (1 3rd)
Tsunoda 129 (2 3rd)
Magnussen 107 (2 3rd)
Sargeant 82 (1 3rd)

Incredible turnaround in performance by Norris - he seems like he would be unstoppable if the McLaren could keep up its race pace week by week.

And things are looking better and better for Norris! He leads a McLaren 1-2 in Japan ahead of Piastri and gets an additional point for fastest lap. Ocon finishes third. Following another retirement for Stroll, Gasly is now tied on points with him, and it looks like he won't win the title that once seemed his.

2023 (After sixteen races):

Norris 289 (7 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Stroll 227 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 2 3rd)
Gasly 227 (2 wins, 4 2nd, 1 3rd)
Piastri 197 (3 2nd, 5 3rd)
Ocon 190 (3 wins, 3 2nd, 1 3rd)
Zhou 138 (1 3rd)
Tsunoda 137 (2 3rd)

Piastri wins the Qatar sprint race. Norris takes good points in second place. Gasly is a distant third – he's now overtaken seventh-placed Stroll for second in the standings.

The Grand Prix itself also ends in a McLaren 1-2 led by Piastri – his first proper GP win. 3rd place also goes to an Alpine once again, but this time, it's Ocon. Fastest lap was set by Norris.

With about 140 or so points remaining, seems like a foregone conclusion that Norris will walk this now. Excellent recovery performance considering how tragically awful McLaren's early season was. He had an 8th and a 9th after the opening rounds :badoer:

Norris takes another sprint win in Austin. Gasly finishes second with Piastri in third.

Norris also wins the Grand Prix. Gasly repeats his second place, while Stroll gets his first podium in six races. The fastest lap point was taken by fourth-placed Tsunoda.

When we look back, Norris winning this won't seem controversial or out of the ordinary, but in context it's incredible how he turned this around, and I'm guessing will be elimination champion at the next round or so.

If the performances are like they have been in the latter half of the season, expect Piastri to win about 20 races next year.

In some seasons (I guess a bit like 2023 in real life), the most exciting thing is how many wins exactly one driver can take. :P 20 would be a new record, breaking Russell's 18 from last year.

So did that end up happening?

Norris had the chance to clinch the title in Mexico, and he ended up doing just that by winning from 6th on the grid, setting the fastest lap on the way. Piastri gets closer to third in the championship after another second place. Ocon finishes third ahead of team mate Gasly.

2023 (After nineteen races):

Norris 374 (9 wins, 4 2nd, 1 3rd)

Gasly 278 (2 wins, 5 2nd, 1 3rd)
Stroll 258 (4 wins, 2 2nd, 3 3rd)
Piastri 254 (1 win, 4 2nd, 5 3rd)
Ocon 225 (3 wins, 3 2nd, 3 3rd)
Tsunoda 173 (2 3rd)
Zhou 172 (1 3rd)
Magnussen 129 (2 3rd)
Sargeant 99 (1 3rd)
De Vries 56 (best result: 5th)
Lawson 50 (1 2nd)

Nice to see Norris finally getting the title after those 2nd places.
Next year should be interesting, or maybe it'll just be a Piastri walkover.

Martin Brundle: "Well, it's a fairly short debate, Murray".

In the Sao Paulo sprint race, Norris takes yet another win. Tsunoda finishes second and Piastri third.

The Grand Prix sees Norris take his tenth win of the season, along with another fastest lap. Maybe Stroll will be able to hold on to third in the championship after all – he finishes second, while Piastri is down in seventh after a first-lap crash. Gasly gets third place.

2023 (After twenty races):

Norris 408 (10 wins, 4 2nd, 1 3rd)

Gasly 297 (2 wins, 5 2nd, 2 3rd)
Stroll 281 (4 wins, 3 2nd, 3 3rd)
Piastri 266 (1 win, 4 2nd, 5 3rd)
Ocon 238 (3 wins, 3 2nd, 3 3rd)
Tsunoda 192 (2 3rd)
Zhou 173 (1 3rd)
Magnussen 131 (2 3rd)
Sargeant 107 (1 3rd)
De Vries 56 (best result: 5th)
Lawson 50 (1 2nd)

This could be down to 8 cars next year unless Red Bull fire Checo so Lawson goes in the Alpha Tauri instead of Danny Ric! (If it stays as per current contracts then Alpine will be the only team with 2 cars).
