F1 Knockout Cup

With some other alternative championship threads coming to an end, I thought I'd start by own! In football, there is something called the Unofficial Football World Championship, where the title of World Champion is given on a boxing style champion vs challenger system. Starting from the first international game ever played, someone has worked out who would have held the title on a knockout basis (i.e. a team will keep the title until they lose a match, and the team who beat them then gain the title). I was thinking about how something similar could work in F1:
The rules would be as follows:
The first title holder would be Farina (who finished 1st in the first race of the 1950 season).
The first challenger would be Fagioli (who finished 2nd in the first race of the 1950 season).
In the second race of the season, the driver who finishes the highest gets the title.
The next challenger will be the highest placed finisher in the race (other than the title holder and challenger).
In the event that both drivers retire, the holder keeps the title.
In the event that the driver shares a car with the challenger, the holder keeps the title.
If a driver retires or dies in possession of the title, it will be passed on to the winner of the next race.
If the challenger does not race in the next race, the title holder keeps the title and counts a win.
If neither the title holder nor the challenger race in the next race, the title is passed onto the winner of the next race.
Indianapolis 500 will be ignored.
Let's see how this works!

This is interesting! This way, many drivers win their first title lots earlier than they did in reality. At some point, you should make a table of the championship history, with an overview of how long champions held title, the date they gained/lost it etc.

Yeah, I might do that at the end. I'll do some more on Thursday (they don't take very long), but then I'm on holiday for a while!
