Sry I'm doing this late (and thus sorry for championship table not displaying points scores per round, only total calculation) - after the race, I went to a christening party, then had dinner, and stuff so here it is in simplistic format. (Both tables are original position; driver; actual points scored x car no. = total)

Monaco GP results

Code: Select all

 5.  Kobayashi     10 x 16 = 160
 2.  Alonso        18 x  5 =  90
 7.  Sutil          6 x 14 =  84
 3.  Button        15 x  4 =  60
 8.  Heidfeld       4 x  9 =  36
 1.  Vettel        25 x  1 =  25
 4.  Webber        12 x  2 =  24
 6.  Hamilton       8 x  3 =  24
 9.  Barrichello    2 x 11 =  22
10.  Buemi          1 x 18 =  18

Congratulations to Kamui! Boo to Ferdy.

Current Championship positions

Code: Select all

 5.  Alonso      69 x  5 = 345
 4.  Button      76 x  4 = 304
10.  Kobayashi   19 x 16 = 304
 6.  Heidfeld    29 x  9 = 261
 2.  Hamilton    85 x  3 = 255
 9.  Petrov      21 x 10 = 210
 7.  Rosberg     26 x  8 = 208
 3.  Webber      79 x  2 = 158
 8.  Massa       24 x  6 = 144
 1.  Vettel     143 x  1 = 143
13.  Buemi        7 x 18 = 126
12.  Sutil        8 x 14 = 112
11.  Schumacher  14 x  7 =  98
14.  Perez        2 x 17 =  34
16.  Di Resta     2 x 15 =  30
15.  Barrichello  2 x 11 =  22

Finally, something on the board for Rubens. Two of my favourite drivers in equal 2nd. And Heidfeld making a bit of a recovery from last week's fall down the table.

Love the way Lotus have their real numbers, Williams do but the wrong way round, and Minardi are only just out!

Thinking back:

1989 should go to a Williams driver as they struggled in 1988 - probably Boutsen as he'll have the higher number being newcomer.
1988 is still probably Senna as McLaren were that far ahead!
1987 might still be Piquet, and if not him then Senna
1986 Piquet again probably
1985 Mansell as Williams struggled in 1984 and he'll have the higher number
1984 Prost as McLaren struggled in 1983 and he'll have the higher number
1983 Piquet as Brabham were very unreliable in 1982
1982 Pironi I reckon
1981 Piquet yet again since the second car only scored 1 point in 1980, giving him a high number
1980 er....can;t see past Piquet!

Piquet could win about 6 championships at this rate..........
"Poor old Warwick takes it from behind all throughout this season". :) (Tony Jardine, 1988)

Canadian Grand Prix 2011

Code: Select all

 1.  Jenson Button         25 x  4 = 100
 5.  Vitaly Petrov         10 x 10 = 100
 7.  Kamui Kobayashi        6 x 16 =  96
 4.  Michael Schumacher    12 x  7 =  84
 8.  Jaime Alguersuari      4 x 19 =  76
 6.  Felipe Massa           8 x  6 =  48
 3.  Mark Webber           15 x  2 =  30
 9.  Rubens Barrichello     2 x 11 =  22
 2.  Sebastian Vettel      18 x  1 =  18
10.  Sebastien Buemi        1 x 18 =  18

A good race for Petrov - not as many points as he scored in Australia, but equal-1st for points scored at this round, alongside the race winner (a rare occurance this year)! And our favourite Japanese race driver gets a good haul of points. Which leads to an interesting situation in the overall championship situation, which is even better than Petrov leading this championship after Australia...

Championship positions

Code: Select all

 2.  Jenson Button      101 x  4 = 404
11.  Kamui Kobayashi     25 x 16 = 400
 5.  Fernando Alonso     69 x  5 = 345
 7.  Vitaly Petrov       31 x 10 = 310
 8.  Nick Heidfeld       29 x  9 = 261
 4.  Lewis Hamilton      85 x  3 = 255
10.  Nico Rosberg        26 x  8 = 208
 6.  Felipe Massa        32 x  6 = 192
 3.  Mark Webber         94 x  2 = 188
 9.  Michael Schumacher  26 x  7 = 182
 1.  Sebastian Vettel   161 x  1 = 161
13.  Sebastien Buemi      8 x 18 = 144
12.  Adrian Sutil         8 x 14 = 112
14.  Jaime Alguersuari    4 x 19 =  76
15.  Rubens Barrichello   4 x 11 =  44
16.  Sergio Perez         2 x 17 =  34
17.  Paul Di Resta        2 x 15 =  30

Alonso falls from 1st to 3rd! Kamui goes to 2nd! Button leads! Let the season finish now! Unless Kamui can can the lead in Valencia...

European Grand Prix at Valencia 2011

Code: Select all

 2.  Alonso      18 x  5 = 90
 8.  Alguersuari  4 x 19 = 76
 5.  Massa       10 x  6 = 60
 7.  Rosberg      6 x  8 = 48
 4.  Hamilton    12 x  3 = 36
 6.  Button       8 x  4 = 32
 3.  Webber      15 x  2 = 30
 9.  Sutil        2 x 14 = 28
 1.  Vettel      25 x  1 = 25
10.  Heidfeld     1 x  9 =  9

A good race for Alonso (boo!) and for Alguersuari (yay!). An average race for Button.

Championship Positions

Code: Select all

 2=  Button       109 x  4 = 436
 5.  Alonso        87 x  5 = 435
11.  Kobayashi     25 x 16 = 400
 8.  Petrov        31 x 10 = 310
 4.  Hamilton      97 x  3 = 291
 9.  Heidfeld      30 x  9 = 270
 7.  Rosberg       32 x  8 = 256
 6.  Massa         42 x  6 = 252
 2=  Webber       109 x  2 = 218
 1.  Vettel       186 x  1 = 186
10.  Schumacher    26 x  7 = 182
13=  Alguersuari    8 x 19 = 152
13=  Buemi          8 x 18 = 144
12.  Sutil         10 x 14 = 140
15.  Barrichello    4 x 11 =  44
16=  Perez          2 x 17 =  34
16=  Di Resta       2 x 15 =  30

Button retains his lead (yay!) by the narrowest of margins (boo!) while the top-3, of which Kobayashi is third (yay!), has pulled out a gap to early challenger, Petrov.

British GP 2011

Code: Select all

 1.  Alonso      25 x  5 = 125
 7.  Perez        6 x 17 = 102
 6.  Rosberg      8 x  8 = 64
 5.  Massa       10 x  6 = 60
 4.  Hamilton    12 x  3 = 36
 8.  Heidfeld     4 x  9 = 36
 3.  Webber      15 x  2 = 30
10.  Alguersuari  1 x 19 = 19
 2.  Vettel      18 x  1 = 18
 9.  Schumacher   2 x  7 = 14

Curses to Alonso, Perez was sooooooo close to winning this round! Hamilton and Heidfeld score the same number of points.

Championship positions

Code: Select all

 3.  Alonso       112 x  5 = 560
 5.  Button       109 x  4 = 436
11.  Kobayashi     25 x 16 = 400
 4.  Hamilton     109 x  3 = 327
 7.  Rosberg       40 x  8 = 320
 6.  Massa         52 x  6 = 312
 9.  Petrov        31 x 10 = 310
 8.  Heidfeld      34 x  9 = 306
 2.  Webber       124 x  2 = 248
 1.  Vettel       204 x  1 = 204
10.  Schumacher    28 x  7 = 196
13.  Alguersuari    9 x 19 = 171
14.  Buemi          8 x 18 = 144
12.  Sutil         10 x 14 = 140
15.  Perez          8 x 17 = 136
16.  Barrichello    4 x 11 =  44
17.  Di Resta       2 x 15 =  30

Alonso now pulls out a bit of a lead here. Button and Kobayashi retain their comfortable 2nd and 3rd places despite their no-scores in Britain. There is now a strong 5-way battle for fourth between Hamilton, Rosberg, Massa, Petrov and Heidfeld. Being 8th and 9th must be disappointing for the two Renault drivers, considering their positions after their podiums in the first two races of the year.

Original Car Number Allocation System (1950 - 1973)

Car numbers would vary from race-to-race, with numbers allocated by race organisers.

It seems that in this, it is very hard to score two championships, let alone two consecutive titles, with Alonso this year looking to join Fangio, Hunt, Berger, Moss, Clark, Jones and Albereto to do so.

Due to boredom, I'll continue this backwards for a bit.

1990

Larrousse gain from this, moving from 6th to 3rd, while Tyrrell and Ferrari lose places, which you would expect considering their numbers.

There's no point in doing this before 1996 because of the different car numbering system before that point.

Plus, it means Ferrari will pretty much dominate the 80's and 90's unopposed.

Well, this is the one time Ferrari could not win it. Although it is their normal allocation of numbers that win it. And quite a lot of drivers at the same teams in pairs, or alternates between two teams' drivers.

Both of Onyx's drivers DNPQ'ed 8 times yet one of their drivers is 5th here - I don't go through race-by-race, but I suspect that they 'won' the Portugese GP with their 3rd place and their car number 36. Christian Danner DNQ'ed in 12 races yet finished 10th thanks to his single real-life 4th place in the USA. Tarquini, who DNPQ'ed for the entire 2nd-half of the season, gains several places. And both of BMS Scuderia Italia's drivers had either a DNQ or DNPQ yet gained a couple of places each here too. Each point that these drivers scored was worth so much more to these teams. Maybe if this system was in place, qualifying would have been less difficult for these underdogs?

(Oh, and it's interesting to notice that dropped scores still do not affect this championship - pre-dropped scores in brackets.)

Code: Select all

1st  Ferrari              1026 + 588      1614
2nd  Benetton             608 + 100 + 40  748
3rd  Williams             240 + 185       425
4th  Onyx                 216             216
5th  McLaren              152 + 60        212
6th  Lotus                132 + 36        168
7th  Minardi              115 + 48        163
8th  BMS Scuderia Italia  88 + 44         132
9th  Arrows               63 + 60         123
10th Rial                 114             114

Code: Select all

11th Ligier               50 + 26         76
12th Tyrrell              32 + 24 + 6     62
13th Leyton House         60              60
14th MRD Brabham          32 + 28         60
15th AGS                  40              40
16th Larrousse            30              30

Onyx jumped from 10th to 4th here. For a team that often knew DNPQ's (and even scored a double DNPQ immediately after their podium!) their podium ought to have been better rewarded. Rial also gain 3 places. This is what I wanted to achieve from this alternative championship!

Dropped scores hurt Alain Prost here, falling from 1st to 3rd (worse than reality, where he still loses the championship to this rule). Not much change, other than the usual car number 1 dropping a load of places. De Cesaris in the Rial gains 4 places while Minardi's Martini gains a handful of places too - the aim of this alternative championship, although I was hoping for a bigger influence, as happened with 1989!

Code: Select all

1st  McLaren      1080 + 957    2037
2nd  Ferrari      1148 + 648    1796
3rd  Benetton     540 + 228     768
4th  Arrows       289 + 108     397
5th  Leyton House 272 + 75      347
6th  Williams     60 + 48       108
7th  Rial         66            66
8th  Lotus        22 + 2        24
9th  Minardi      23            23
10th Tyrrell      15            15

McLaren still easily win this, despite their drivers being the only two in the field to have to drop scores... :x

Yannick Dalmas is unclassified because, according to Wikipedia, "Dalmas' Larrousse/Lola was ineligible for constructors points, as the team had entered only one car for the championship." His original 2 points came in the season finale in Australia, and had they been allowed, not only would have placed him well in this alternative championship, but would also have gained Larrousse an extra place in the Constructors' Championship:

Code: Select all

1st  Ferrari      1008 + 459  1467

13th AGS          14            14

Now off to calculate the Jim Clark and Colin Chapman Championships! (And I can guarentee that neither Jonathan Palmer nor Tyrrell will win this!)

EDIT: And here it is!

Jim Clark Championship

8th           Nicola Larini     Coloni       32          0             0              8th

Colin Chapman Championship

Code: Select all

1st  Larrousse     1290 (+ 377)  1290 (1667)
2nd  Leyton House  608           608

4th  AGS           490 + 56      546
5th  Coloni        0             0

And Larrousse did not need Dalmas's points from the final 3 races of the season after all! But those points would have placed Dalmas 4th in the J.C. Cup, despite only competing in 3 races...

I reckon 1980 could be an interesting year in this so I will push on and work backwards towards it!

Considering that, in real life, Albereto led for most of the season, this one was inevitable (as 1979 will be as well).

1985

Code: Select all

new position  Driver             Team      car number  points total  revised total  original position
1st           Michele Alboreto   Ferrari   27          53            1431           2nd

20th          Ivan Capelli       Tyrrell   4           3             12             17th=

This is the worst that the driver of car number 1 has done so far (working backwards). The only drivers to have done nearly as badly under this system are Damon Hill in 1997 (driving for Arrows) and, ironically, Michael Schumacher in 2005, both ending up 18th. Normally, they do well enough to maintain a position somewhere around 10th or so. (Exactly the position Vettel is currently in, under this system.)

Code: Select all

1st  Ferrari   1431 + 728 + 84  2243
2nd  Lotus     456 + 363        819
3rd  Ligier    416 + 100 + 75   591
4th  Williams  240 + 155        395
5th  Arrows    198 + 51         249
6th  Renault   165 + 80         245
7th  Brabham   147 + 40         187
8th  McLaren   146 + 14         160
9th  Tyrrell   16 + 12          28

An absolute disaster for McLaren. And Tyrrell really do not come out smelling of roses in this, do they?

It has now been nearly a decade since F1 teams have held the same car numbers throughout a season, and Tyrrell have finally got fed up of carrying numbers 3 and 4 and placing awfully in the championship (as we shall find out in the upcoming days). Hence they decided that they deserved some performance breaks to try and boost their points total to move up the field somewhat. The FIA did not like the fact that they decided to cheat rather than discuss a reallocation of their numbers with the FIA and the other competitors, so disqualified them from the whole championship and forced them to continue with 3 and 4 for the remainder of the time in which F1 would use this system of team car number allocation.

And Stefan Johansson, although he drove for Tyrrell, later managed to secure a seat at Toleman for one race, replacing Senna, in which he scored his only points. He then moved to the higher-numbered Toleman for the rest of the year, but scored no further points. But if he had been in the number 20 Toleman for his 4th-placed finish, he would still have been 15th here.

And I really was hoping for once that, because the leading Ferrari driver was fourth and with less than half the total of the winning McLaren drivers, that McLaren might take this championship this year, but it wasn't to be. :(

Code: Select all

1st     Ferrari    823.5 + 756  1579.5

Pironi only spent 4 races together as teammates, but they were able to score enough points in their partial seasons to gain first and second here. A shame that Villeneuve only had his single second place in the highly controversial San Marino GP to count towards his points total. And seeing Eddie Cheever rise from 12th to 5th in this makes me wonder why Ligier never got close to winning the championship under this system, considering that their numbers were so close to that of Ferrari's (25 & 26 v. 27 & 28).

It's ironic. When I wrote the last post, wondering why Ligier never got close to winning this, I had not yet looked forward to this year (1981). The second Ligier had three drivers in it and all year, only one of them managed a single finish, in 7th. Tambay managed 8 retirements in a row in all his 8 races in that second Ligier while Lafitte had 6 all year. Jaubouille also had a pair of retirements and a pair of DNQs in it. I had to be careful with Salazar and Borgudd as Slim had driven both ATSs and Salazar had driven both Marches as well as the Ensign.

Code: Select all

1st   Ligier      1144       1144
2nd   Ferrari     675 + 252  927
3rd   Renault     645 + 176  821
4th   Brabham     250 + 66   316
5th   Arrows      290        290
6th   Lotus       154 + 96   250
7th   Alfa Romeo  161 + 66   227
8th   McLaren     189 + 8    197
9th   Williams    98 + 46    144
10th  Ensign      56 + 14    70
11th  Theodore    33         33
12th  ATS         9          9

And despite only one Ligier scoring, they win the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari still manage 2nd place though.

1980 will not see Ferrari win, as they carry numbers 1 and 2 while Williams have the numbers 27 and 28...

Now that Williams have the numbers 27 and 28 in the mid-to-late 1970s, they are likely to dominate this in the way the Ferrari did in the 1980s. Although they did not win until 1979...

1979

An expected victory. Ferrari and Ligier also do well, as is also expected.

EDIT: Forgot to add that although as many as 6 drivers had to drop scores in this championship (up to 9 points in Jody's case), it would have made no difference other than reversing the two Ferrari drivers' positions.

What in the 1980s and early 1990s might be seen as an inevitable win isn't necessarily so here. Reutemann wins this with car number 11, the second-smallest number under this car-numbering system (1974 - 1995 inclusive). Williams only have one car and this is now in their pre-win era. Patrese does well in his number 35 Arrows here. He could have won overall had he scored 16 points originally. Ligier and Wolf also get very close to success here. And Rebaque scores a point in a privately-entered Lotus.

Code: Select all

1st   Ferrari       528 + 204  735
2nd   Lotus         320 + 306  626
3rd   Ligier        494        494
4th   Wolf          480        480
5th   Arrows        385        385
6th   Williams      297        297
7th   Fittipaldi    238        238
8th   Tyrrell       136 + 21   157
9th   McLaren       64 + 56    120

Code: Select all

10th  Shadow        68 + 32    100
11th  Brabham       50 + 44    94
12th  Renault       45         45
13th  Team Rebaque  25         25
14th  Ensign        22         22
15th  Surtees       19         19

I have added this up in the same way it is calculated now, but in those days, only the top-scoring car from each team scored. But I'll leave it like this for these last few years, for comparative purposes.

So which team wins?
Ferrari? NO!
Ligier? NO!
Williams? NO!
McLaren? NO!

Wolf? YES!

If Takahashi (Meiritsu team, Tyrrell chassis, car number 50), Takahara (Kojima, number 51) or Hoshino (Heros Racing/Kojima, number 52) scored just 1 point at Fuji, they would have at least equalled Jochen Mass in 15th. Just 2 points and they would have been 12th. Would not have been bad for a one-off entry. But it was not to be. And it is good to see another team win this, rather than the usual suspects...

Code: Select all

12th  McLaren         50 + 40        90
13th  ATS/Penske      34             34

Well, you can't have it all, can you? Although, if only Walter Wolf entered a second car...

Rolf Stommelen does well, considering he only enters 3 races, and only one of those was in car 77! (The highest car to score so far working backwards). Watson and Laffite were the only drivers for Penske and Ligier respectively, and either could have won this with just 9 or 10 (real-life) points more.

12th  Ensign     44             44
13th  Parnelli   27             27

Tyrrell's best season under this system. Had Penske or Ligier had a successful second driver, they could have taken this.

Wow, someone really is reading this, and checking for errors! And you're right, 4 x 39 does not equal 393. I shall change it now!

Yes! Ferrari don't win this, nor do Lotus, McLaren or Williams. If only Hesketh could have had a second driver, and one who could bring points in, they could have won the Constructors' here too... It wouldn't have needed to have been that many... And why couldn't Lella Lombardi have scored her (half-)point using the only car number she had used the year before - 208? That would then have got her to 104 points and 10th.

If Lella Lombardi could only have qualified her Brabham in her one-off outing in Britain and scored a point, she would have been 7th on 208 points and summed up what this alternative championship would have been all about. And I am sad that James Hunt did not win this year as he then did in 1975. Alas, another Ferrari domination!

Re: Car numbers alternative championship

Post by dr-baker »

Should I continue with this for the period 1950 - 1973, where numbers for each driver and car varied from race to race? It may well throw up some odd results, but there would be a ton(ne) more work for me, as so far, I have only calculated from final championship tables, rather than go through race-by-race....

Alternatively, I was tempted to start a Nations Cup for each year of the championship (assuming it hasn't yet been done?). Please vote below which I should do during the rest of my summer hols!

Boredom got me continuing with this (for now...).

1950

Top 4 of 7 scores to count. Plus extra point for fastest lap. Shared drives split points equally.

Johnnie Parsons, winner of the Indy 500, loses out badly here, falling from 6th to 22nd. Which makes Farina's fall from winner to 5th look not so bad, although just as painful. Now I want to continue with this over the holiday season to see how many titles Fangio ends up with and whether Moss can win any. And I am not going to bother with the Constructors' any more for fear of a Ferrari whitewash (or redwash as the case may be).

Where last year's Indy 500 winner ended up last, this year, the Indy 500 winner very nearly wins this championship outright, thanks to winning with the largest double-digit number. (This is the kind of quirky result I'm looking for!) Fangio only won thanks to every German entry having ridiculously large entry numbers too. These ranged from 71 for Ascari to 94 for Johnny Claes.

I have tried to narrow the table a bit by leaving off the engine names for the Indy-only entries - all the point-scorers had Offenhauser engines, and besides, I never listed the engines for any of the European entries in any other year, so I won't here either. The Talbots were all listed as Talbot-Lago-Talbots, but again, I tried to narrow the table. In future, I may just use drivers' intials plus surname - it would shorten Jose Frolien Gonzalez's name a bit... (I have just posted this and the table still doesn't quite fit on my 17" screen - many of the entries have gone onto a second line still. ) EDIT: I have taken the 'sums' out of this (eg. if a driver won with car number 36 and scored fastest lap, I had (8+1)x36), I now just have the number of points awarded per race to narrow to table to something a bit more manageable.

What is it about the Germans and large entry numbers?

The championship is dominated by the German point-scorers and those with large numbers at Indy. Ascari is so dominant that he just runs away with it, even with dropped scores. This is not going to happen again at future German GPs (well, not for the next four or five years...).

The Indy points-scorers did not have quite such high car numbers this time, which is a shame for this as the Germans did not issue such high entry numbers this year either, so no shock results from there. This just goes to show that maximising your score/consistancy has always been important, even in the days of dropped scores, as it can deprive your rivals as well, I suppose. So as yet, no surprise winners from the 1950s...

By the way, I hope this table is easier to read. As all the race positions are identical to reality, I don't think I need to indication their positions in the calculation, and you can easily find out their car numbers in Wikipedia (my source for every year so far, bar 2011...). Any feedback welcome.

Points were given to top 5 finishers (8, 6, 4, 3, 2). 1 point was given for fastest lap. Only the best five of nine scores counted towards the world championship. Points for shared drives were divided equally between the drivers, regardless of who had driven more laps unless one of the drivers was deemed to have completed "insufficient distance". Drivers who shared more than one car during a race received points only for their highest finish. (Best 5 results now count, a change from best 4 from 1950 to 1953.)

Another Fangio win. Some names on the list I hadn't heard of. Stirling Moss's first points. Seven people share the single point for fastest lap in Britain, hence the fractions of a point. (I thought expressing these as fraction would be easier to calculate and be more accurate than using decimals.)
