The 10-7-6-5-4-3-2-1,5-1-0,5 scoring system

Those of you who follow the "old points systems" thread will have found out how stupid feels to have only a few teams scoring points, in this era of bulletproof reliability. With the former 10-6-4-3-2-1 system, most of the time is the top 3 teams scoring all points. Mercedes and Renault have scored a few, Sauber a couple and Force India one. The 10-8-6-4-3-2-1 is better, but still a bit pointless to make comparisons, with only the top 8 scoring.

I was surfing the net for something completely unrelated when I came across a very old proposal to change the point system that someone made in the Autosport Forums -at the end of the 2000 season! He argued about increasing the points to the top 10, and proposed this: 10-6-4-3.5-3-2.5-2-1.5-1-0.5. Okay, half points is not nice to look at, and that system is not very proportional, but it has the virtue of keeping the same points to the top three. I thought it could be interesting to calculate this season's points using that system and see what happens. Then I made some adjustments and came up with a system that more closely resembles the current one: 10-7-6-5-4-3-2-1,5-1-0,5. This one is more different from the classic one, but is quite resembling of the 2003-09 one -not surprising because the current system in F1 was based on that one, only decreasing points for second place and giving a few for 9th and 10th- and a bit more proportional. It also reduces the amount of half points given.

For the sake of pleasing those of us who like to look at standings based in "old money", I've decided to give a go to calculating this season's points using these two scales. The point is not to find alternative champions and that kind of stuff, but to keep track of recent seasons using a scale similar to the ones historically used. The "perfect conversion" would be to take the real scale and divide by 2.5, but that way you get 7.2 points for 2nd, 6.4 for 3rd and so on, down to 0.4 for 10th place. Messing up with half points is already bad, but that would be too much. So, let's go with the results:

Both systems give similar results, but the second one is closer to the real standings and causes much less half points, although the "points inflation" is obviously higher. I think I'm gonna stick with it for comparisons though.

Well 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 is always a better system than the current one if you ask me. However, it doesn't classify for the 10-point systems.

How about the simplest of all - 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1? :)

I know it doesn't give extra premiums for wins or podiums but surely you get the recognition for those anyway! That's how they do the scoring in the winter league at my golf club. :)

That's only the Top 9 scoring but it did work nicely with a fantasy racing competition I did some quite a few years back.

Feel free to use it.
