I have read about it and am intrigued by its purported use of long takes (something I've experimented with in college, though that was on a digital camera, which is not quite the same as what Alfred was working with :P) and the way it takes place in real time (which makes me think of 12 Angry Men, one of my all-time favourite films, which mostly takes place in real-time as well). Anyway, I know what I'm watching tonight! :)

Birdman is also a really intriguing long-take film. It's the one where there is one shot that continues for over an hour but actually consisted of many much shorter takes cleverly edited e.g. when there was no light or moving objects in the frame. A great watch plus it has an awesome Michael Keaton in it.

I don't know if this goes on this thread or the football one, but anyway, here it goes

"United Passions, the FIFA movie, one of the biggest flops ever"

Talk another day of FIFA, the organization that for the last three weeks seems determined to blow up. After the investigations initiated by the US and Switzerland to placate the endemic corruption of the institution, arrests, and the resignation of Blatter, FIFA has received this weekend a new moral (and economic) blow. His film, United Passions, has raised less at its premiere than a spanish Tercera División match. Literally.

Let us turn to the data. In 2014 FIFA announced production, supported largely by the institution, a film that tells the story of the organization, from its ancient beginnings to now, ahem, what it is today. To do so would have as director Frederic Auburtin and a cast of international stature: Tim Roth (playing Sepp Blatter), Gerard Depardieu, Sam Neill and Fisher Stevens. Money? Who cares, is the FIFA! In total, 26 million euro budget.

A figure that actually is quite low (albeit quite high if we consider the annual budget of many national federations). But the profitability of a film can only be measured in terms of its collection. And there FIFA has failed miserably in its release.

In its first weekend on the undercard in the United States, United Passions has raised a whopping $918 (813 euros). Half of the proceeds will be divided between three theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Washington DC. In Philadelphia only two people dared to see the movie. Elsewhere in the country, 300 million people, the outlook is bleak.

Under the circumstances, FIFA is officially a organization unable to raise more money with a show as almost any game promotion to Second Division B in Spain. Here's an example. The same weekend the premiere, was played in Sariñena (Los Monegros, Huesca) the first leg between CD Sariñena and Numancia B. The local team field, apparently, has a capacity of 4,000 spectators. It seemed pretty full.

Assuming that every single ticket worth 5 euros (a generous assumption for the FIFA) and the stadium recorded media input (or the capacity, as indicated by the pictures, it is actually much less), we may deduce that the Club Deportivo Sariñena (adding drinks at the bar) raised more money for the match dispute, of Tercera Division, than FIFA itself.

Undoubtedly, the Sariñena - Numancia B achieved a higher recognition of the sports (and film) criticism than United Passions. A journalist from The Guardian called it "pure cinematic excrement" and in The New York Times devoted the following beautiful words: "One of the most impossible of seeing films of recent times, a dishonest piece of corporate sanctification is not suitable even to laugh."

On IMDB his score is 2.1 out of 10. In Rotten Tomatoes, 0.7 out of 10.

United Passions still has time to pick up, but neither scandal nor the film itself indicate that the film tax collection trend is upward. For now, it can be considered a bomb, and is at the same level as other great successes (?) in the history of Hollywood as Apartment 143, The Marsh, Trojan War, Dog Eat Dog or Zyzzyx Road.

You do not know them? Normal, nor would know nothing of United Passions were it not because, well, it's the film FIFA and participate Depardieu and Tim Roth. At least, the film is already an official candidate list thicken this fantastic "films considered the worst." Other communication and corporate success of our international organization favorite.

Perhaps covered elsewhere on the forums, but check who's in the trailer for Zoolander 2 for about half a second!

I can imagine the horribly clunky dialogue introducing him if he's mentioned in the film - "Look Hansel, it's three-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton"

So I finally got to see The Force Awakens and in my opinion it is good. Maybe it's too obviously been made to please the fans but as a pleased fan I can live with that. Better than the prequels and maybe, without the fog of nostalgia, even as good as Return Of The Jedi.

And, yes, some of us middle aged fans did suddenly find our eyes a bit moister than usual towards the end....

I suspect Episode VIII will have less of the familiarity that TFA had. While this trilogy seems to have started very similarly to the Original Trilogy, I think it has enough going on to go in a different direction. I also see that it has borrowed more elements from the Expanded Universe than I thought it would, not that I'm complaining, they were good elements.

Yep, I was glued to my chair at the end with a bit of a , eyes watery kind of feel after having experienced the whole thing. Really, really enjoyed it.

There were a few plot points I would have liked to see developed further - I wouldn't have minded another 5-10 minutes to the run time if it meant deeper characters/storylines. Don't want to post spoilers but in particular the villain characters needed a little more build up.

So yeah, the new Star Wars was great, it was an 8.5/10 for me. I'd also say newcomer Daisy Ridley deserved an Oscar nod for her performance. As for next month, is anyone thinking of seeing The Revenant or Room?

My entire first viewing of The Force Awakens was me wondering what to expect. There were so many ways the story could have gone, and I had managed to avoid all trailers and commentary before the film had begun, so I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen.

Saw it a second time a few days later. Solid film. Well paced. Highly recommended. Watch it. :)

Just saw "The Force Awakens" today a little later than most. (By some miracle I managed to avoid being spoiled these two long weeks.) I thought it was an overall fantastic experience. It is way better than the prequel trilogy. The special effects, and action scenes were great. But it was the characters themselves that were the best part. The young heroes were great, the old heroes were great, the villain was great, even that little beach ball of a droid that I thought I was going to hate, was great.

There were some complaints from people about the story copying to much from "A New Hope", and they'd be right. But I mean it in a good way, and I think it kind of made sense for this particular kind of film. Not really much else that I can complain about it at the moment without spoiling it. Overall, it lived up to my expectations.

Is it the best film I've seen this year? No. (That would be "Mad Max: Fury Road".) But it is a must see if you even like movies in general. It was good enough, that I'm even considering seeing it a second time in the theater. Which is very rare for me. I give it a 9 out of 10.

I have yet to see the Star Wars, and honestly, I couldn't care less. Not because I don't like Star Wars, I do, very very much so, but as a fan of the Expanded Universe books, having read over 30 of them, the fact that Disney and Abrams have said "Yea, those? Never happened." really pisses me off. But so it goes. It's there story now, they can do what they want.

I did go see the Hateful Eight on Monday, and I have to say that is a fabulous flick. Much better than Django, or Basterds, or Deathproof. Hell, its better (IMO) than Jackie Brown. Tarantino has gone back to what makes his films great, out of order, great dialogue, awesome, yet out of place soundtrack, and best of all a return to an ensemble cast. Plus the movie was filmed in 70mm, no digital. If you are a QT fan, by all means go.

That assumes Lucas ever had an original vision in the first place. :P

I get why they didn't pick a book or series, as it would be too hard to choose. Only the Thrawn Trilogy or the Jedi Academy Trilogy would do. But making it all non-canon was stupid, if they want to do all these "side films" you had so many options. The X-Wing books, The Courtship of Princess Leia, Tales From the Bounty Hunters, or god forbid, Shadows of The Empire? All would be perfect.

And for God sakes would it have killed them to name the sides "The New Republic" and the "Imperial Remnant"? Give us a shout out at least. (Also, since everything is non-canon now, was there ever an Old Republic?)

Oh well rant over. Get off my lawn and all that lol. I'll see it eventually I guess, once it gets on TV. Can't be as bad as the first three, right?

How I usually handle continuity between films, books, and other forms of media, is that I take it with a clear conscience, and decide for myself what's cannon, and what not. Even if it isn't officially recognized by whoever owns it.

Take the James Bond movies for example. Many people don't consider "Never Say Never Again" an official Bond film. But to me, Sean Connery is in it, he's called James Bond, and even though it's pretty much a loose remake of "Thunderball", It's a bond movie in my book. (I'll even go as far to say I like it better than "Thunderball") Hell, MGM owns the rights to the film now which boggles my why it's still considered an unofficial Bond film.

On the other hand I don't consider the 1967 version of "Casino Royale" despite being Ian Fleming original choice for James Bond (David Niven) being in it, an official Bond film. I consider it a spoof. Which it is. A weird, dated, convoluted mess of a spoof. But a spoof indeed. (To be fair, the were a few moments that got me chuckling at times.)

If you really think about it, the only part of Bond that was really in cannon to begin with were the books, which it what Ian Fleming intended. Kind of funny when comparing the Star Wars cannon to my Bond cannon. Especially due to a nice little cameo in "The Force Awakens" which I won't spoil for you.

The Woody Allen firing squad scene always got me cracking up. I also like the part when Le Chiffre blows up Kronsteen in the phonebooth at the Berlin wall. (Which I suspect Luc Besson copied in "The Fifth Element") Classic moments.

The Bond canon is so screwed up, it would take a novel just to figure it out lol. For the longest time the official studio line was "it's all canon.....except for Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again. Then very briefy, On Her Majesty's Secret Service was disowned, then restored to canon status. Then after making up with Sean Connery, Never Say Never Again is ok too. The studio has glossed over Die Another Day pretty damn hard, and to a lesser extent The World Is Not Enough, but they are still canon, kinda sorta. Then the new Casino Royale and was a reboot, but it wasn't, at least not officially.

Fans seem to have decided that Connery (all films), Lazenby, Craig, and roughly half of Moore (all pre-Man With The Golden Gun) are all cannon. The second half of Moore, and surprisingly all of Dalton, is not. And there seems to be no conclusive opinion of Brosnan yet, aside from Goldeneye being canon. The first Casino Royale is not.

And that's if you assume that there is only "one" James Bond, simply played by different actors. I prefer the theory that James Bond is actually a title given to MI6's best agent, and as such changes hands. There are very good arguments for this written by different film and literary scholars. But then that's ANOTHER set of canon.....

Yup, its a mess anyway you slice it. The 4 Craig movies could be the best evidence to the theory, but the studio and director's insistence that Casino Royale, was NOT a reboot, despite that destroying any continuity by having current people in the roles of a prequel....

The Bond canon wouldn't be as damn confusing if they didn't have that graveyard scene at the beginning of For Your Eyes Only. Most of the different actors appear to be living their own separate timelines, but when they did stuff like that it just got super confusing. Make up your own canon, it makes no difference.

Kind of odd since his wife's death was briefly mentioned in "License to Kill", and I always thought that Dalton (My second favorite Bond after Brosnan.) was the closest to what James Bond was in the books. So there is yet another screw up right there.

While I personally liked Dalton, the general consensus seems to be that he's too dark and brooding, and cold blooded, especially after the camp and silliness of Moore. (License to Kill for example, while tame by todays standards, nearly got an R on release). Of course then Daniel Craig showed up.....

Old post I know, but I've been avoiding this thread since Force Awakens came out since I wanted to avoid all possibility of spoilers. But yeah, there was totally an Old Republic - you saw it in the prequels.

And as for the EU - well, that all still exists as books and games and whatnot. And it's still as enjoyable as ever - it just didn't take place in the same make-believe universe as The Force Awakens.

'Tis a shame about KotOR though, but I gave up all hope of a satisfying conclusion to that franchise when the MMO was announced.

So I met Tommy in London last night - he makes an annual trip over, and sneaked out to have a chat with him during the film.

The guy is crazy, I think Greg Sestero had about the measure of him. That said, he was good fun and I'm now in possession of a signed pair of Tommy Wiseau boxers shorts, so there's that.

I'd definitely go back and meet him again next year - for the price of a movie it was well worth it!

He had a stab at telling me to look for hidden symbolism. Apparently Claudette is the real villain!

So I met Tommy in London last night - he makes an annual trip over, and sneaked out to have a chat with him during the film.
