Complete list of Driver Unrejectifications

Post by Benetton »

My ambition is to list here every drive that lead to the driver in question becoming a non-reject. We all know what is the criteria for unrejectification.

I'll work my way from the present day backwards.

This year has been quite good regarding this :) I only wish we had more variables coming into place in the second half of the season; this way we might have seen more unrejectifications (Toro Rosso drivers, Senna)

I actually thought it would have been easier to list them starting at 1950 and work from then to date. No matter, really look forward to seeing the rest of it!

Mods! Shove this in the Délétraz forum. That's its true home. And that forum needs a boost anyway.

Good that the thread got moved. Sorry for posting it in the wrong section initially. Pretty shocked to find out that not one single driver unrejectified himself during the 1998 and 1999 seasons!

I think 1994 might set a modern era record of unrejected drivers, with 9.

It took Jos The Boss until the 10th round (his 6th race) to unrejectify himself, in the 1994 Championship winning car?

In fact, looking on GPGuide, I can see that was his 1st points finish, and only actually his 2nd finish. Not good, Jossman.

Let me guess the 9 from 1994:

Coulthard
Frentzen
Panis
Larini
Barrichello
Irvine
Verstappen
Katayama
Morbidelli?

In the points system on which this is based (10/9-6-4-3-2-1), they'd have 2 and 1 respectively, but you need 3 to be unrejectified.

I think Guiterrez and Bottas have quite good chances of unrejectifying themselves, and also the Toro Rosso drivers. I don't think Chilton or Pic have any chance of unrejectifying themselves.

Unluckily I think you're right about Chilton and Pic. Anyway it would be great to see a driver able to unrejectify in a Marussia or in a Caterham.

If Caterham manage to actually go anywhere in the next year or two, I could see Pic unrejectifying himself.

I try to bring some updates to this soon!

About next year I think the only one who will unrejectify himself is Bottas if the Williams car is any good.

Gutierrez I feel will do okay but only score minor points (P 7-10) and one major points in (P 4-6). Perez didn't unrejectify himself in his first year either.

Pic or Chilton might get a point or two in a chaotic race but no way they'll ever be as high as fourth in a single race!

I think it's getting harder for drivers to unrejectify themselves because of the new points system that's come in. Back in the day of the top 6 getting points it was a case of 3 points and you're unrejectified. in the days of the top 8 it went up to 9 points and nowadays it's a case for the newer drivers of at least 18pts from the top 6 and you've escaped.

True, but what you have these days is a much closer field, covered by only a couple of seconds. Even Marussia and Caterham aren't far behind Williams and Sauber now. That means there's a better opportunity to score points, coupled with the fact that cars are much more reliable, whereas before the cars at the back of the grid would be lucky to just see the chequered flag.

But doesn't more reliable cars mean that the new teams won't get to score points? If all cars were like last year's Mclaren MP4-27 then i think Caterham and Marussia would stand a better chance of scoring compared to cars that really break down

Yeah, it's six of one and half a dozen of the other, the fact they're more reliable often shuts out the points, but the closer field spread suggests that it should then be easier to get a decent result.

What are exact requirements for unrejectification? Just scoring? I thought that's purely discretionary, and had Olivier Beretta on my mind, but i guess he doesn't fulfill requirements after all. :)

In order for a driver to be unrejectified, they have to have scored 3 points under the old points system (pre 2002 system). So, a driver has to score at least a 4th, a 5th and 6th, or 3 6th places to be unrejectified.

Why don't people ever go to www.f1rejects.com nd then to Drivers' Index or Teams' Index and read the criteria for themselves? Easch time this comes up it frustrates me no end!!! How on earth do you join the F1 Rejcts forum without knowing of the main F1Rejects website?!?!?!?

(I would have provided a link, but the Teams' and Drivers' Indices are blocked from the uni library computers...)

I've discovered forum on F1 rejects months after website itself. Criteria for unrejectification is obviously not so evident on the page, or i simply overlooked it. Sorry if i caused you so much stress, if this is thing that frustrates you to "no end", you have a pretty problemless life, enjoy it. :)

A top 4 finish means immediate escape from Reject Status. If you have a 5th and no other top 6 then you are a Reject. 3 6th places is also good enough (which the Brazillians seem to be good at as both Zonta and Da Matta had 3 6th's as their best result)

Yeah, thanks, i see now that it is pretty obvious on drivers index, thing is i maybe never even visited that actual page, team index was much more interesting ( and reject centrale of course ), somehow rejectfullness is emanated better through a team than a driver, at least for me. :)

Notes on teams whose inclusions are affected by privateer-related results:

- Rob Walker Racing entered a partnership with Ferguson in 1961.
- Reg Parnell Racing entered a partnership with Lola in 1962-63.
- BRP entered F1 utilising private machinery in 1958, finally building their own chassis in 1963-64.
- Brabham briefly used (and scored points with) a Lotus chassis in 1962.
- Tyrrell functioned as a second works-supported Matra effort in 1968, but remained under the ownership of Ken Tyrrell. Thus, both Matra's and Tyrrell's results are counted separately from one another.
- The original incarnation of Williams utilised private machinery from 1969-72, before striking out on their own as a constructor.
- Surtees started out with a McLaren chassis in 1970.
- Hesketh used a March chassis in 1973, before building their own car the following year.
- Theodore used privately entered cars in 1976-77.

Just out of interest, what's the longest time until unrejectification (in terms of race starts and actual time)

Good question. I could be wrong but in terms of race starts it's Pedro Diniz with 48. In terms of time I think it's Nicola Larini with nearly seven years between his debut and Imola '94.

I seem to recall that for a world champion, it was Jack Brabham (or possibly Graham Hill). Not sure about every driver, though.

EDIT: Most I can find right now is a tie between Pedro Diniz and Adrian Sutil (48th start).

Larini was my first guess as well, and would be correct I think if mrfakeboullier had asked about GP weekend participations instead of race starts, but since he had a lot of DNQ/DNPQs during his time at Osella and Modena, he only made 44 race starts before his 2nd place at Imola.

I actually calculated some of these way back in 2009 (note that I miscalculated Diniz's stats slightly, it did indeed take him 48 starts to unrejectify himself). So while Diniz and Sutil share the lead in number of starts, Larini leads in the most number of entries before unrejectification.

Actually doesn't our good friend Ricciardo lead on race starts with 53?
...or 51 if you count his disqualified 2nd place at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix
Either way he beats Diniz and Sutil.
