It would be good to get a general pecking order of where things stand in the dry - if it's wet (either in qualifying or the race - qualifying usually ends up with fast cars out of position like the 2005 race) then we won't know until Malaysia.

I have to say, NBC has impressed me so far, loads of pre-Aussie coverage, both on NBCSN itself and on NBCSports MotorSportsTalk website. Love the articles by Hobbs and Matchett.

It is a reasonable indicator of relative form, but not always - there have been a few years where a team and driver have done well in Australia but subsequently fallen back during the season, so it can be a bit misleading. Added to that, being at the start of the season and therefore falling in the phase where the teams may be a bit uncertain about tyres and the drivers somewhat rusty from the off season wait, the option for slightly more unpredictability and accidents can also make things more variable, and therefore misleading, depending on the circumstances.

Well, we're finally getting to see some of the cars in Melbourne spec in the photos coming up here and there, and there is some curiosity over what Lotus are doing this coming weekend. The reason for that is that they appear to have closed off the two inlets on either side of the airbox intake that are thought to feed their passive secondary drag reduction device (i.e. a passively activated blown rear wing to help shed more drag at top speed), suggesting that they do not want to use it for this weekend. Perhaps, given the problems they had in trying to set up the similar system they wanted to run last year but pushed back to 2013 instead, they have decided to play it safe this weekend and focus on their set ups rather than getting lost in trying to calibrate this device instead?

Given the difficulties there seem to be in tuning the system (partly dependent upon barometric pressure which will change if the weather changes), and it only being of benefit at high speed, (ie it can only possibly be set to activate above the fastest corner speed where downforce is required and then plus a safety margin), it is only likely to be seen on circuits with high speed straights and no high speed corners - Malaysia and China would look suitable though.
How bleedin' awful is that new vodcast Peter Windsor is doing for F1 Racing Magazine?! It's so badly produced I think the F1RWRS Live Broadcasts are a better quality live show than it is. The whole thing was incredibly boring and pointless. Safe to say I won't be watching it at any point again this season...

I wouldn't call 2010 "truly wet" though, I'm pretty sure there wasn't one drop at all during the race, just a downpour before the race that led to a drying track.

For those of you that are interested, the weather forecasts for Saturday are looking uglier and uglier by the minute. And considering it's been both dry and hot as hell down there for the last two weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if some strange stuff happen over the weekend.

Malaysia is even more prone to rain than Melbourne is.
