Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2013 Germany

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Charles Pic's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until 12th.

1 Romain Grosjean: Just what he needed

2: Nico Hulkenberg: I think he could have easily finished 6th had he had a better strategy

1) Romain Grosjean - really showed what he is capable of if he actually bothers to race

2) Jenson Button - after the backwards rolling of the last few races had excellent pace throughout and strong finish despite the options failing one lap earlier than expected

2. Webber- Despite his team doing their best to take him out he still got points!

1. RoGro (I think he deserved the team order, considering how far behind he is in the championship. This is retribution for all his poor races this season. Also Lotus's strategists led to the team order becoming a necessity).
2. Hulkenberg (superb recovery after a poor strategy; they should have boxed in the SC period).

1. Romain Grosjean - Drove an assured and clean race; pushed Vettel hard for about three-quarters of the race and got a well-deserved podium.
2. Nico Hulkenberg - Did a rather good job altogether. Sauber made a real hash of his strategy, but he really showed he's got that fight to outdrive the car.

1. Grosjean, had a fast car, stayed on the track and kept out of trouble.
2. Button, dog of a car but came home 6th due to strategy.

1) Grosjean

2) A more difficult selection - I'll go for Hulkenberg because by rights he would have been 7th (maybe 6th?) if his team hadn't messed up.

Button was close, but he didn't seem to make his tyres work as well as he usually does.

1. Hülkenberg
He scored another valuable point in the awful Sauber. And this is the driver that does not get paid.

2. Grosjean
Nowhere since Bahrain, and now, a part of dejavu of the Bahrain podium, with great speed.

1. Grosjean - great to see his form return and I withdraw any prior comments concerning him not deserving the Lotus drive. Let's hope letting Kimi passed won't damage his motivation (and consequently damage everyone else).

2. Torn between Pasta, Button and Webber, but going to have to go with Hulkenberg I think. Hopefully he'll get a faster seat soon and we can see his true latent potential. Maybe Ferrari 2014?

1. Grosjean: He had a very good race after four weekends with no points scored. He would probably have finished second without team orders.
2. (shared, 1.5 points for each) Webber: For a while, I was wondering if he would finish behind a Marussia (having been more than 80 seconds behind Chilton after his failed pit stop). While he was very lucky with the safety car, he still had to drive well to score some points. Overtaking two cars in a row is impressive, even if the cars in questions are a Caterham and a Marussia.
Vettel: Usually, Vettel winning is not surprising at all. However, considering that this was one of only three current Grands Prix that he hadn't won yet, one can say that he managed to break his home curse.
Bianchi's Marussia: It was sad to see yet another good race by him ruined by technical problems. However, the car rolling across the track was the most entertaining moment of the race, which was no mean feat in such a good race.
Button: Almost got a top five finish in the most disappointing car of the season.

1. Romain Grosjean - Seriously didn't think he'd be a contender for the win at one point, and a superb podium fending off Alonso is exactly what he needed.

2. Pastor Maldonado - Got and kept that shitbox Williams in the top 10 on merit for most of the afternoon. I was gutted when his last pitstop went awry, he deserved points today.

Honourable mentions to McLaren for making the most of Force India's crap race with a double points finish, and Jules Bianchi's Marussia for giving us a proper old-school engine failure, and a moment of sheer rejectfulness when it rolled downhill on its own.

1: Grosjean - I spent a lot of time worrying in case he messed up, and was glad (and mildly surprised) when he didn't.
2: Hulkenberg - did much better than I thought was possible in a Sauber for the second week running

2. McLaren. It's quite sad, but them getting 6th and 8th was one thing that really caught me by surprise

Maldonado, running in 7th until botched pit work sank him to 15th
Grosjean, no crashes, kept pace with Raikkonen and Vettel, and finished 3rd.

1. Romain Grosjean. Well driven and could have won in my eyes.

2. The Incredible Hulk. He showed why he is linked to Lotus and Ferrari for a 2014 drive and partly why he has ditched Sauber.

I believe Hulk has decided to leave at the end of the year.

Especially with the car of Maldonado having probably sinking to 15th from 7th. Webber would be my honorable mention if the Williams wasn't so bad overall that 7th would be like a win.
