Before the Beginning:

- First things first, Stewart need to elect a tester if they actually want their upgrades to do anything decent. Just a bid from a free driver in the old thread will suffice.

- Preseason testing calendar will be devised and posted in just over a week.

- I will PM each manager their chassis and engine stats, so they have an informed idea of what to upgrade as the season goes.

- The upgrade system will have some new things added to it.

Time for a little housekeeping!

Every team owner will be sent the stats for their chassis and engine. This will then give the manager a clear picture of where to update, but will not provide the full picture of where they are in relation to the others. That's what the pre-season testing will be for. Once you've received your stats, you can plan for pre-season tests. There will be FOUR circuits where the F1 circus will visit, and you must choose TWO. Pre-season testing is free.

You must also choose two areas in which to upgrade for each test. The areas of development have changed from last year, where there are now two more options:

Aero: Improves qualifying power threshold for chassis.
Downforce: Improved race power threshold for chassis.
Top Speed: Improves qualifying engine power.
Grip: Improves race engine power.
Reliability: Improves reliability of package.

The circuits available are below. Be advised, each circuit may provide an upgrade bonus depending on the area tested. For example, if Monza was for up for selection you could expect any focus on Top Speed or Aero to be rewarded more greatly than focusing on them at, say, Monaco. So, be smart in your circuit choices.

With our package looking like we'll be firmly stuck in the midfield, Benetton will be heading to Silverstone to focus on Downforce and Grip.

Then, it's off to Deutscheland and the glorious Hockenheim circuit, to focus on Top Speed and Aero development. If things go well, we should be able to fight for the minor points.

Arrows will join Benetton at both Silverstone and Hockenheim. We will focus on downforce and grip at Silverstone and Top Speed and Aero at Hockenheim.

Afterwards, we'll pack up and fly to Jerez, concentrating on grip and reliabilty

1998 Australian Grand Prix - Melbourne - Qualifying

The F1 circus finally regrouped Down Under to take part in the first 1998 qualifying session. First blood was drawn by Finnish ace Mika Hakkinen, who has remained at McLaren to lead their title aspirations. He sits alongside Rubens Barrichello in the Williams, who have gone for an all-red livery and Ford power in their attempt to retain their status as top dog. Both Prosts start in an impressive 6th and 7th; the AP01 looks like a decent package with its 1997-spec Ferrari engines and having two hungry drivers has certainly helped their cause. Another pair of impressive qualifiers were Pedro de la Rosa and Ralf Schumacher; the former scored a point for Minardi here last season, and with an improved car and engine package must not be discounted from doing so again. The latter has moved to Stefan Grand Prix, and the Serbian team have pinned their hopes on the Yamaha engines that Sauber used to good effect last season.

Okay, at least Taki Inoue can at least keep pace with Zanardi! Just 0.01 seconds separated the two. However, we must come from 21st and 23rd from the grid to score any points. But as in typical 1st round fashion, expect a lot of DNF'S!

1998 Australian Grand Prix - Melbourne - Race

Whenever a new F1 season begins, testing is usually not enough to sort out a car's teething problems within a race encounter. 1998 was no exception, as cars dropped like flies during the course of the Australian Grand Prix. Through the clouds of smoke and debris, Mika Hakkinen held strong to win the first race of the year ahead of team-mate Greg Moore. Hakkinen made the most of his pole position, and McLaren's obvious focus on reliability aided them as they made hay whilst the beating sun shone on the Silver Arrows. They were joined on the podium by Johnny Herbert, who also took advantage of the attrition to take 3rd in his Jordan. However, a real surprise result came for the Stefan team, who claimed their first ever points through an assured drive from Ralf Schumacher, in his sophomore year in Formula 1. Having started a commendable 14th on the grid, Schumacher coaxed his car through the race without putting a foot wrong to send the Yugoslav team into raptures. The last points positions were claimed by Eddie Irvine who put in a quiet drive to recover points for the Benetton team; Heinz-Harald Frentzen looked to be on course for a podium until his car developed a terminal leak, ending the German's hopes for a strong start to 1998. Olivier Panis also did a recovery job for Ferrari, as Michael Schumacher dropped out early on.

Right guys, I'd better come clean. Regrettably, I've lost all motivation to run this series, and with workload coming in thick and fast whilst trying to keep track of my own sanity, I think the time has come to drop this series.

I apologise for effectively wasting the time you've all invested in this series, but I'd rather not waste your time any longer with a half-arsed series.

Thank you for making this a fun series whilst it lasted, it was great to see members turn around teams and make some left-field choices. Again, I'm sorry.

At least I can recline with the thought that I made Stefan beat Ferrari! :lol:

But on a serious point as much as im saying "aww" I know exactly where your coming from. Ive had that with other projects and when real life makes demands, there are more important things, especially as running this sort of stuff takes a lot more effort than it can appear!

After Argentina, teams can choose to hang on there for what will be the first in-season test. Focusing on one area costs 500k, and focusing on two costs 800k.

Don't forget, these are the areas you can focus on:

Aero: Improves qualifying power threshold for chassis.
Downforce: Improved race power threshold for chassis.
Top Speed: Improves qualifying engine power.
Grip: Improves race engine power.
Reliability: Improves reliability of package.
