1981 German Grand Prix - Pre-Qualifying:
As the Hockenheimring is the longest circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, only 8 cars took part in pre-qualifying. As expected, Renault were fastest, and Surtees were last. However, Michael Bleekemolen beat both Alfa Romeo cars, despite the fact that the BRM engine is still reported to be significantly down on power.

1. Alain Prost (Renault RE30) 1:51.202
2. Eliseo Salazar (Renault RE30) +0.442
3. Michael Bleekemolen (ATS-Wolf D4) +2.377
4. Nigel Mansell (Alfa Romeo 181) +2.565
5. Hans Heyer (ATS-Wolf D4) +2.685
6. Slim Borgudd (Alfa Romeo 181) +3.150
7. Brian Henton (Surtees TS22) +4.464
8. Siegfried Stohr (Surtees TS22) +4.668

And we totally kick Alfa Romeo's ass! Doesn't matter much as we're not nearly close to the pace of Renault or Boro, but it's good for the morale that we're actually beating a non-BRM team!

1981 Italian Grand Prix - Qualifying

A serious accident overshadowed Saturday's qualifying at Monza. Jacques Laffite was going slow with a punctured tyre. Kevin Cogan was trying to pass Eliseo Salazar when he was approaching Laffite, and unable to see the Arrows driver, slammed into the back of Laffite's car. Cogan was launched into the air violently, and after a long flight, was sent barrel-rolling along the track. Both drivers were immediately rushed to hospital. Laffite was conscious, and appears to have suffered no serious injuries, but will spend the night at hospital and will miss the race as a precautionary measure. Kevin Cogan is in a critical condition, having suffered severe leg and back injuries. Further updates will be released as soon as information becomes available to FISA.
