2014 Formula 1 Season Preview - Anything Goes

New engines, new cars and new faces: F1 has changed a lot and it most certainly has changed for the better. 13 teams will fight for the most prestigeous prize in all of sports. Who can get the edge and will win the titles? Let's find out:

Rule Changes:
- From 2014 on, engine manufacturers will be allowed to supply ether a V10 NA engine or an I4 turbo engine. The new engines as well as the gearboxes must last for a whole GP weekend. Any form of change of either gearbox or engine whatsoever earns the driver whoms gearbox/engine was changed a ten-place grid penalty.
- Penalty points will be modified, since their introduction failed to discourage drivers from rule-defying behaviour. From this season on, 10 penalty points will cost the team of the driver accumulating these 8 points in the WCC. If a driver accumulates 40 penalty points or more, his superlicense will be voided until the end of the season. Should a team not have sufficient points in the WCC to have 8 points taken away without going into the negative, the driver in question will be banned for the next race after the offense causing him to go past 10 points.
- Chassis rules have been liberated, back to the standards of the late 2000s with only a rule banning excessive winglets left.
- Furthermore, the regulation on driver aids have been loosened, with traction control and unlimited adjustment of the front wing flaps (compared to the limit of two adjustments per lap in years before). Further driver aids will be introduced over the next years.
- To counteract the financial costs of these developments, testing has been limited to 200 km per team per year with 100 km to be used at the official pre-season test and 100 km to be used at a mid-season test. Furthermore, teams are severly limited in the number of upgrades they can introduce per year, depending on the amount of staff employed by the team.
- From this season on, F1 teams can acquire contract rights for future drivers in the FIA Young Driver's Draft. This year saw the first draft, which saw Daniel Ricciardo picked as first pick by Peugeot.
- To prevent excessive amounts of pay drivers in F1 and raise the general quality of the field, the FIA has declared any driver must earn at least €1,000,000 per year.

Team Preview:
DHL Brabham Racing Organisation Mercedes
#1: James James Davies
#2: Vitaly Petrov

After having both of their drivers retire at the end of 2013, Brabham aimed big and lured the reigning world champion and his main rival to their team, using both precious amount of new DHL money and a lot of smooth-talking. Their 2014 challenger looks even better than last year's car and unless they drop off in the developmental race again, they must be considered title contenders as of right now.
Prediction: Top 4

Repsol Villeneuve Racing Peugeot
#3: Jacques Villeneuve
#4: Jaime Alguersuari

Unfortunately, even a number of podiums last season cannot prevent that money still talks loudest at Villeneuve. Respol's influence got Jaime Alguersuari a drive next to Jacques Villeneuve who drives for minimum wage. Their car does not seem up to par and their engine is underpowered, so a long year waits for Jacques and his boys from Durango
Prediction: Backmarker

Canon WilliamsF1 Mercedes
#5: Fernando Alonso
#6: Nico Rosberg

Sir Frank Williams proves his genius once more with a successful last-minute push for Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard will find a great car powered by a great turbo engine. However, Nico Rosberg may turn out to be a problem. While he is all smiles in front of the cameras, he must feel slighted by Williams and will want to beat Alonso at any cost.
Prediction: Top 4

Rexona Sauber F1 Team Mercedes
#7: Sébastien Bourdais
#8: Dave Cassidy

Fans of classic motorsport must be pleased with Sauber returning to their roots and running Mercedes engines again. The marriage looks promising on paper and is bound to produce wins. The big question will be whether returning IndyCar champion Bourdais and drafted GP2 champion Cassidy can actually challenge for a title.
Prediction: Top 4

Team Peugeot
#14: Romain Grosjean
#15: Matthieu Vaxivière

As Romain Grosjean makes the jump from one works team to another, he is about the only person who has major F1 experience as the former Le Mans effort of Peugeot has been moved virtually one-to-one for F1, which shows in their engine which is still lacking. Despitet that and the perhaps misguided trust of Peugeot in Matthieu Vaxivière, their first season should see some success.
Prediction: Upper Midfield

Intel Caterham F1 Team Peugeot
#18: Pedro de la Rosa
#19: Daniil Kwjat

Last year's surprise effort has brought one piece of their success back: Pedro de la Rosa still hasn't had enough of F1, despite having turned 44 at the start of the season. He is joined by the reigning GP3 champion Daniil Kwjat, who is a promising talent. While they have an underpowered engine, there is no reason they can't do some good this season again, making Tony Fernandes proud.
Prediction: Lower Midfield

Energizer Red Bull Racing Hyundai
#25: Jenson Button
#26: Alex Lynn

The new management of Red Bull was doubted and led to rumours that Adrian Newey would leave F1. For now, he is still here and has a powerful engine to do his magic with. The Hyundai is expensive, but awesome. Unfortunately, the whole package will need a season to mend, as their testing performance was rather disappointing.
Prediction: Upper Midfield

Scuderia Ferrari Kaspersky Lab
#27: Evgeny Restov
#28: Damon Cannon

Panic mode has started at Ferrari, as they turn out to be woefully underprepared for the new rules. Their V10, despite being one of the teams demanding the rule change, is less competitive than the Hyundai one and their chassis is atrocious by their standards. They have a future world champion in Evgeny Restov, but he won't be able to fix this mess.
Prediction: Lower Midfield

Adidas Stefan Grand Prix Mercedes
#30: Lewis Hamilton
#31: Mikhail Aleshin

After a strong 2013 season, Stefan have decided to do the logical thing and get themselves a major star in Lewis Hamilton. The two-time world champion joins Aleshin, last year's surprise mid-season replacement. Some questions are out there about his ability, but Stefan hope to send their drivers to the top of the podium again.
Prediction: Upper Midfield

Full Tilt Poker Marussia F1 Team Ferrari
#32: Felipe Nasr
#33: Alexandre Prémat

If their situation in 2013 was bad, their situation this year redefines horrible. Their chassis is even worse than last year and their drivers have exactly two races of F1 experience between them. Survival is their only goal, and if they score as many points as they did last year it's a miracle that makes Bern look predictable.
Prediction: Backmarker

VIVA Mahindra Racing Mercedes
#51: Valtteri Bottas
#52: Jean-Éric Vergne

Indian money flows into F1 as Mahindra have acquired an entry to Formula One. They have chosen drivers with about as much experience as them. Vergne's contract was not extended by Red Bull (who went with their draft pick) and made Mahindra an attractive choice. Speaking of draft picks: a deal with Mercedes sends their pick to Mahindra for this season.
Prediction: Lower Midfield

Mercedes AMG Aabar F1 Team
#73: Jeroen Krautmeir
#74: Felipe Massa

Consistency is the idea for Mercedes as they failed to win the Fernando Alonso sweepstakes. Felipe Massa and Jeroen Krautmeir have a better car with a better engine at their disposal this season. It is likely they will use that to score some major points.
Prediction: Top 4

Mobil 1 McLaren Ferrari
#77: Sebastian Vettel
#78: Sergio Pérez

Pigs can fly and hell has frozen over, McLaren have chosen a business deal with Ferrari. Vettel is still there, so is Agostini, if only as a Friday driver. Pérez is a sure-fire talent that hasn't gotten a good chance yet. Those are the good news. The bad news, you ask? Bad chassis and bad engines. Another difficult start to the year awaits McLaren.

Sponsorship Market

The first of many changes in 2014 is, that there won't be individual driver sponsorship anymore. Instead, you may now proceed to sign a main sponsor for your team in order to earn more money for the team.
There are three types of sponsors available for your team:
Interfering Sponsor - These are the sponsors that have very specific demands regarding one of your drivers. They pay €50,000,000.
Nationalistic Sponsor - These are the sponsors that demand a driver of a certain nationality be signed. They pay €30,000,000.
Complacent Sponsor - These are the sponsors that are happy just being the main sponsor of your team. They pay €10,000,000.

Interfering Sponsor: Loctite – Hire driver who has won at least 5 IndyCar races

Any driver demands go for one year. You may sign a driver meeting the demands for longer than that, but it will not assure you sponsorship for the next seasons. Should you pick the Interfering Sponsor or Nationalistic Sponsor and fail to meet their demands, the sponsor will pay out €10,000,000 as if they were a Complacent Sponsor.

Point System Vote

On Ferrari's request, the FIA and FOM have decided to let the teams vote on a change of a point system. The following three suggestions are available for choice.
a) Current System: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1
b) Ferrari's Proposal: 14-10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
c) Alternative Proposal: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

In addition to the abovementioned, a pole position will always be rewarded with the equivalent point value of an 8th place (4 in the Current System, 3 in both Ferrari's Proposal and the Alternative Proposal). Furthermore, with the new rules for the penalty system, 10 penalty points will cost a team the equivalent of a 6th place in WCC points (8 in the current system, 5 in both Ferrari's proposal and the Alternative Proposal).

In case you're wondering about the DHL sponsorship, I've compiled a list of fastest laps for drivers in Alt-F1 from 1997-2013, and F1RWRS from 2010-2013 here.

Now, each team can pick one of these. The order of picks was determined in a weighted lottery a few days after the end of the season and is as follows.

After each team has picked a young driver, they have a so-called right of first refusal for the next four years (i.e. the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 season). That means, that if their driver gets a contract offer from another team, the drafting team may choose to match that offer and sign the driver themselves. Furthermore, a drafted young driver may not refuse the contract offer of the team that drafted him during those four years. Generally, the following holds true: if your drafted driver is approach mid-season, the right of first refusal does not force you to sack one of your drivers to keep him. Instead, matching that offer will mean his contract starts as soon as one driver contract of your team runs out; also, you are required to match the offer in all details, wage, contract length and position, i.e. you can't match a race drive offer with a friday drive (more on that later) offer (although you can offer a race drive to match a friday drive).

Please send a list of your draft choices to [email protected] until June 20th, 8 a.m. CEST. Please list at least as many possible choices as needed for your position in the draft (e.g. 10 for Williams), since you will forfeit your draft pick and be subject to a €5,000,000 fine if you don't have a valid draft option. If you wish to sell or give your draft pick to another team, post any agreements in this thread.

Works Team Application

Since KQ has unfortunately gone bankrupt, Hyundai are looking for a new team to give works support to. Works support entails the following:
- Your team must use Hyundai engines.
- Your team pays a higher price for the engines (to account for the additional work in developing the engine).
- Your team gets a random amount between €2,000,000 and €30,000,000 each year from Hyundai in factory support.

Any team that is not Ferrari, Mercedes or Peugeot may apply for the spot. Please send an application (basically just a sentence or two detailing why you want to become the Hyundai works team) to your to [email protected] until June 19th, 6 p.m. CEST. Since the forced engine also enforces a certain engine price on you, your team must have at the very least a budget of €315,000,000.

Oh no. I just misunderstood you and thought you were going to take Calinetic if TMLW was okay with it. Since I assumed that, I asked TMLW for approval which he gave. If you want Mahindra, Mahindra it is. The sponsors will stay unchanged.

Here's the Price table

>> Step 1: Buying an engine
With Honda and Renault leaving F1 and the entry of Peugeot, we have four manufacturers available for your choice if you happen to be a customer team. I will explain the columns:
Company should be self-explainatory. The type of engine describes, whether you are purchasing a V10 NA engine or an I4 turbo engine and BHP states its power in qualifying and race. CFP means Car Failure Probability, i.e. it's a fancy term for reliability. The higher it is, the more likely your car is to retire from a race. To explain the prices: the works column represents the development costs the work teams have to simulate the additional costs of developing the engines. From this season on, as a customer team, you may sign engine deals that last longer than one year. With the engine freeze, the engine performance and engine price is locked for two seasons, i.e. the prices for 2014 and 2015 will not change.

>> Step 2: Developing a chassis
Explaining the columns as well: Upgrades replace testing (to a point, there will be one mid-season test), the upgrades are in the right top of the table. Updates can be applied at any time, from the development of the chassis until the day before the start of the final GP weekend of the season. The lower chassis have a higher number of possible upgrades to counter the fact that the higher chassis types are limited to the top teams. Max Grip determines the highest amount of grip possible, your car won't have more grip than that value, no matter what, even if you had HWNSNBM himself driving the vehicle. An RNG will determine that value once you have decided on a chassis type. CFP is the same as with engines - the lower the number the more likely your car is to finish. The section "min. position WCC" states the minimum amount of success required in 2013 to be able to build a chassis type.

>> Step 3: Arranging brothels
Explaining the columns for the third time: Max Grip increases the max grip value of your chassis for the last third of the season. Range is the value that is added on to the Random Grip Range, i.e. the value used by the game to determine inconsistency. The higher that value, the more likelier your driver is to have a bad day. Unlike last season, you must make your brothel selection before the start of the year and may not change it.

Since Red Bull are now the Hyundai works team (see your mail inbox), Red Bull cannot afford more than a C chassis. You are also not capable of paying for the brothels.

Furthermore, in general, any updates you cannot pay for will be applied once you are able to.

Obviously, you can. For everyone: you do not need to decide on or buy an upgrade now. You can purchase upgrades any time you want between now and the second-to-last GP weekend of the year.
