Rosberg won one race more than in real life, but not the one he actually did win! Pironi didn't lead the championship at the time of his career-ending accident, and Arnoux spent most of the year as title favourite, even leading going to Las Vegas but three points from Prost. Prost won and Arnoux came fifth, throwing away the title that should have been his.

There was no beating Nelson Piquet this season, although Prost and Arnoux at times looked capable of taking it from him. Indeed, with three races left, Piquet had 53 points, while Prost and Arnoux both had 48. Piquet then dominated the final three races, easily securing both titles, his second and third.

Early on in the season, it looked like a four-way fight between Prost, Lauda, Piquet and Derek Warwick in the Renault, who was tied for the championship lead after Belgium. After France, though, he lost his competitive edge, and though he regularly scored points thereafter, his sole competition was his teammate Patrick Tambay, who was less consistent but managed to brilliant wins in France and Italy.

Instead, the title was fought between the McLarens of Prost and Lauda as well as the Brabham of Nelson Piquet. Prost was undoubtedly quicker, but less consistent, and Lauda and Piquet were able to stay reasonably close. With two races remaining, Prost had 67.5 points to 59 for Lauda and 53 for Piquet. In the end though, the public was robbed of a meaningful title fight when Prost dominated the final two races to take a nonetheless thouroughly deserved double title with 7 race wins to 3 for Piquet, two each for Lauda and Tambay and one each for Alboreto and Rosberg.

What a thrilling season! From the start, there was a four-way fight for the championship lead between Senna, Prost, Alboreto and de Angelis, all four trading the first four spots in the first half of the season, and only de Angelis not winning a race or actually leading the championship. However, Alboreto and de Angelis (at one point the top two in the championship) started to fall back, leaving Prost and Senna to fight for the title while Rosberg started catching them.

With three races remaining, Prost had a two-point lead over Senna. In Europe and South Africa, each scored a second while the other didn't score, enforcing the status quo going to Australia. Prost retired early on, not scoring, while Senna did enough to secure second place, beating Prost by four points and winning the title. Keke Rosberg's second half of the season was legendary, winning four races to take an easy third. Nigel Mansell also showed promise, scoring two consecutive dominant wins in Brands Hatch and Kyalami.

At the end of this season, Niki Lauda retired from Formula One with six world titles and 26 career victories, second only to Stewart and tied with Clark, and second only to Fangio in world titles, and tied with Brabham.

Did you calculate how Tyrrell might have done in 1984 if they had not been disqualified? (Don't worry if not - I haven't worked out those results in my alternative championship!)

The individual race results show where disqualified drivers came. In Tyrrell's case, it would only be a solitary point for Brundle in Detroit. They usually ended up in their good places through late charges that weren't enough to score well here.

Early on, the battle was intense between Mansell, Piquet, Prost and Senna, switching positions all the time. However, Senna had a rough patch mid-season while Mansell started to dominate more and more races. Going to Mexico, he had a 17-point lead, and Piquet would have to win both remaining races without Mansell scoring. Nigel failed to score in Mexico, but Piquet only came third, handing the title to the Brit. In Australia, he secured the double by winning on lap points by a measly 21 points, a gap second only to the 15 points that separated Fangio from Farina in 1950.

Gerhard Berger was a brilliant surprise over the second half of the season. After scoring only four points over the first 11 races, he scored 20 points in the next four, including three podiums and a victory in Mexico. This allowed him to beat René Arnoux to the sixth place that the Frenchman had held all season long.

Sadly, Elio de Angelis was killed in a testing accident before the Belgian Grand Prix. He never won a Grand Prix, but scored nine podium finishes, 89 race points and 5848 lap points in his career. His best season was undoubtedly in 1985, when he contended for the championship early in the season, scored lap points in every race and race points in all bar two (not including his disqualification in Australia) and ending up fourth on race points.

Keke Rosberg decided to retire after this season. He never won a title, but was always a contender for a decent points haul, and always seized his chance of a race win. He scored 10 Grand Prix wins, 20 podiums, 182.5 race points and 11598 lap points. He finished third in the championship four times, twice in 1982 and 1985, the latter undoubtedly being his best season in Formula One.

Other notable retirees:
Jacques Laffite
3rd (1980 race and lap points)
6 race wins
24 podiums
200 race points
11637 lap points

Patrick Tambay
4th (1983 race and lap points)
4 race wins
9 podiums
102 race points
6461 lap points

Marc Surer
10th (1985 lap points)
1 podium
9 race points
867 lap points

Much like 1986, Prost, Senna, Mansell and Piquet were the main contenders for the title, although, much like 1986, this only lasted for the first half of the season. Afterwards, Mansell and Piquet broke away while Senna and Prost struggled to keep momentum over the season. Williams would end up scoring five 1-2 finishes, with only McLaren managing one, in Belgium. After Mexico, Mansell had a 7-point lead over Piquet and had both championships well within reach. Then, Suzuka came along.

Mansell crashed in practice and broke his back. He would miss the last two races, giving Piquet a golden opportunity to win both titles. Berger ended up dominating the last two races as he did Portugal, but Piquet could still easily take the crown. He instead decided to choke harder than a 2-year-old playing with Lego. He only finished fourth in Japan, notably being beaten by Stefan Johansson, and fourth again in Australia, this time with Alboreto in front of him. He was elevated to third when Senna was disqualified, making things even more bittersweet: he'd tied Mansell on race points, but lost on lap points.

From a rejects perspective, Piercarlo Ghinzani clearly outpaced René Arnoux in his year at Ligier, but not much else. Benetton scored three feel-good podiums, including two by the ever-inconsistent Teo Fabi, while Boutsen proved a lot more consistent, scoring lap points in every race bar Monaco and a steady stream of race points over the second half of the season, including his first podium in Monza.

Speaking of Teo Fabi, he retired after this season, leaving behind him 3 podiums, 19 race points and 1353 lap points. With ninth place in both championships in 1987, it will remain his best year in Formula One.

There's really no point, here. The McLarens won every single race in the season, nine for Senna and seven for Prost. Both of them either tied the record for most wins, race points and lap points in a season, and had more of each than the rest of the field combined.Senna racked up five straight wins in the middle of the year, enough to put Prost out of the running. Compared to real life, the clincher for Senna was in Monaco. Instead of retiring with Prost winning, he won with Prost third, a 14-point swing. This was enough to give Senna his third and fourth titles.

Nigel Mansell does really well compared to real life but Arrows (in what was probably their best-ever season) seem to do a LOT worse!!

Indeed, Arrows' 1988 points haul came from reliability and finishing in good positions thanks to unreliability from everyone else.

However, they did win a race once, so perhaps it's a moot point in this universe :D

Once again, McLaren completely dominated, but slightly less than in 1988. They lost three races and "only" managed five 1-2 finishes. And once again, it was Ayrton Senna who scored the double. Going to Australia, Prost had a 60-point lead on lap points, but Senna led on race points by a single point. Prost withdrew at the start due to the ridiculous amount of rain, and Senna led the opening 13 laps before retiring, securing his third double after 1985 and 1988.

This season broke the record for most points scorers, both on lap points and race points, which saw some impressive performances rejects-wise.Pierluigi Martini scored four points overall, Johansson scored two for Onyx and Nicola Larini managed a solitary point in the Osella! Back at Onyx, on top of Johansson's 161 lap points, J.J. Lehto managed an extra 13 in Adelaide and Gachot three more in France. Christian Danner also managed 50 points in the Rial, while Tarquini scored 59 in the AGS.

A few seasoned drivers' careers ended in 1989...

René Arnoux
1982 race and lap points runner-up
11 race wins
25 podiums
220.5 race points
12715 lap points

Philippe Streiff
240 lap points

Christian Danner
54 lap points

Piercarlo Ghinzani
40 lap points

Once again, Senna wins comfortably, with Prost and Berger fighting over second place. Two drivers score their first victories: Jean Alesi in Phoenix and Ivan Capelli in France. After the Spanish Grand Prix, Alessandro Nannini was involved in a helicopter accident and lost a hand, ending his career with 3541 lap points, 59 race points, five podiums and a best championship finish of sixth in 1989.

With his fourth double, Ayrton Senna tied Juan Manuel Fangio on eight world titles.

Once again, Senna completely dominates the season, and would have beaten the records for most race and lap points in a season had the Australian Grand Prix kept going. Nigel Mansell managed to hang on in the mid-season thanks to nine consecutive podiums, but ultimately, Senna was untouchable. Senna took his unprecented fifth double, and now stands on a record 42 Grand Prix wins, passing Alain Prost, who managed to take a race win in the Ferrari "truck".

A few more drivers retired after 1991...

Nelson Piquet
3 World Championsips (1981R, 1983R/L)
21 Grand Prix wins
68 podiums
518.5 race points
32203 lap points

Stefan Johansson

5 podiums
46 race points
2959 lap points

Alex Caffi

5 race points
372 lap points

Satoru Nakajima
15th (1988 race and lap points)
5 race points
390 lap points

Nigel Mansell takes the concept of WINSLOL to unprecedented proportions. In 16 races, he won 12 Grands Prix, scored 14 podiums, 132 race points and 8018 lap points, beating the record for all of these aside from podiums. Riccardo Patrese himself scored 13 podiums, but only one single victory in Italy, the fourth in his career. The only man other than Mansell to win multiple races was, surprisingle, Gerhard Berger, who won in Canada and Australia.

Two drivers with decent careers retired after 1992.

Stefano Modena
Best championship finish of 8th (1991 race and lap points)
2 podiums
16 race points
1059 lap points

Mauricio Gugelmin
Best championship finish of 11th (1988 lap points)

There was no beating Alain Prost in 1993. He took eight race victories and an extra six podiums to seal his third double title after 1982 and 1984. After all of this, Prost and Senna (who finished second on countback) are both tied for the record number of Grand Prix wins. Prost is retiring from competition after this title, leaving Senna to retake that mantle.

Alain Prost
6 world titles (1982, 1984 and 1993 race and lap points)
Runner-up 9 times (1983, 1985, 1988, 1989 race and lap points and 1990 race points)
Third place 5 times (1981, 1986 race and lap points, 1990 lap points)
48 Grand Prix victories
108 podiums
851.5 race points

Third place 4 times (1989 and 1991 race and lap points)

Holds the record for the longest wait between two wins: over 13 years (1978 to 1991)

Thanks for updating it for me!

I haven't forgotten about this, I've just had a lot of things going on elsewhere, and they took priority. I'm still continuing it, and I've got 1995 done and ready to start posting :)

In the first half of the season, Hill and Schumacher were evenly matched, with Hill leading the championship for two races, and staying within five points until the German Grand Prix, where he retired on the second lap. He'd scored podiums at every race until that point. Thereafter, Schumacher kept piling on the top-two finishes, with Hill relegated to regular third places and the occasional win. There was a four-race stretch where neither Schumacher nor Hill won, with David Coulthard and Jean Alesi each taking two wins, and this was enough to put Schumacher out of reach with two races remaining, scoring his second double in two years.

With this season, Schumacher is only the second person to score over 7000 lap points in a season. Mansell's record still stands at 8018. David Coulthard's form allows Williams to take the potential constructors' crown as Johnny Herbert only scores three podiums all year.

As every year, notable drivers retired from the sport after this season.

Has there ever been a race where only the "real" points finishers scored lap points?

17. Ukyo Katayama - 1

It was a bit closer than in real life, but Damon Hill still won the title easily. With three races remaining, there were only five points between Hill and Villeneuve, but Hill took two wins and the title. The really interesting fight was for third place between Schumacher and Alesi. Alesi was more consistent, scoring ten podiums over the season, six of them consecutively, while Schumacher was a bit more erratic. Both scored the same amount of lap points (the highest-scoring tie ever recorded), but Schumacher had more second places and scored three more lap points to take third place in both championships.

From a rejects point of view, you will notice 28 points for Verstappen's Footwork and 1 single point for Ukyo Katayama.

And finally, two notable drivers made their retirements (one more notable than the other):

Martin Brundle
Best championship finish of 6th (1992 race and lap points)
6 podiums
63 race points
4629 lap points

Pedro Lamy
Best championship finish of 20th (1995 lap points)
9 lap points

I've spotted a couple:
1966 Belgian Grand Prix
1974 Dutch Grand Prix
1986 Canadian Grand Prix
And quite a few close shaves, too.

To be fair, Footwork* were quite competitive at the start of 1996

US 2005 will definitely be one. And I looked it up, China from the current season would too.

Villeneuve got the better start to the year, and eventually won one more race, but it was Schumacher who took a mid-season lead thanks to six consecutive podiums. However, a dry patch between Italy and Luxembourg allowed Villeneuve to make up much-needed ground and with two races remaining, Villeneuve had a one-point championship lead.

In Suzuka, though, he was excluded from qualifying, yet still started from pole position while appealing his exclusion. He went on to finish fourth, but was later disqualified, while Schumacher won. Going to Jérez, Schumacher carried an advantage of nine race points and 46 lap points.

The German was leading comfortably in Jérez until Villeneuve attempted to pass him for the lead. Schumacher then deliberately collided with Villeneuve to prevent him from completing the move. Villeneuve continued into the lead, while Schumacher retired on the spot, having still done enough for second place and the race points championship while Villeneuve took it on lap points by a measly four points, the narrowest margin of all time.

But the FIA was not content. The most sensible option would have been to disqualify Schumacher from the race, giving both titles to Villeneuve. Instead, the governing body disqualified Schumacher from the entire championship, though he kept his statistics and wins.

Further behind, Giancarlo Fisichella scores three podiums in his first year at Jordan, Jarno Trulli scored a podium in the Prost in Austria and Damon Hill scored Arrows' second victory. The first? Way back in 1978, with Riccardo Patrese.

Despite strong campaigns from Schumacher and Coulthard, there was no beating Mika Häkkinen in 1998. He won ten races out of sixteen.

Further back, Giancarlo Fisichella scores two consecutive second places in the Benetton while Wurz scored regular points. Even more notably, Jordan scored an improbable 1-3 finish in Spa, With Hill winning and Ralf Schumacher third.

Shinji Nakano

Aside from Michael Schumacher before his injury, once again, no one could hope to beat Häkkinen in the long run, although many occasionally beat him in individual races. Aside from Schumacher's two wins, Irvine won two, Frentzen won two, Coulthard won three and Barrichello and Salo each won one race. In fact, Stewart still win their race, but it comes in France rather than the Nürburgring, where Frentzen takes his second win, rather than in France! In Germany, Salo takes the win despite leading only one single lap.

Minardi also score a much-appreciated 37 points!

Alessandro Zanardi
Best championship finish of 11th (1999 race points)
3 race points
168 lap points

Tora Takagi
Best championship finish of 22nd (1999 lap points)

Schumacher absolutely dominated the early season, but Häkkinen was never far behind, and in the mid-season, he took four conseuctive victories from Austria to Belgium, enough to take the championship lead and relaunch the title fight. With three races left, there was one point in it.

Schumacher won in Indianapolis with Häkkinen only seventh, but the Finn's win in Japan meant he had a slight chance in Malaysia, being seven points behind. He only finished fifth while Schumacher won his third double title.

Oh, and Gaston flippin' Mazzacane scored 20 massive points in the USA.

Schumacher broke every all-time record available, but not every in-season record (11 wins to Mansell's 12 in 1992). He did, however, set the record for most race and lap points, with 140 and 8269 respectively.

For the very first time, all drivers (bar Anthony Davidson) scored at least one lap point over the season, and Mark Webber scored Minardi's first race point since Christian Fittipaldi in 1993!

Eddie Irvine
World Championship runner-up twice (1999 race and lap points)
2 Grand Prix victories
21 podiums
171 race points
10769 lap points

Mika Salo
Best championship finish of 8th (1999 race points)
1 Grand Prix victory
1 podium
19 race points
1341 lap points

Allan McNish
Best championship finish of 19th (2002 lap points)
16 lap points

Alex Yoong
Best championship finish of 21st (2002 lap points)
10 lap points

Enrique Bernoldi
Best championship finish of 22nd (2002 lap points)
1 lap point

And specially:

Arrows
2 Grand Prix victories (1978 South African Grand Prix and 1997 Hungarian Grand Prix)
6 podiums
90 race points
8071 lap points

What a year.

Michael Schumacher, who had dominated the previous three seasons, found himself in the best car, but with inexplicable woeful inconsistency. Kimi Räikkönen and Juan Pablo Montoya, each in only their third seasons, had the perfect opportunity to take advantage of this occasional lack of pace to be in contention through sheer consistency. And that they did.

Räikkönen started the year strongly with four consecutive podiums, then six in the first seven races, but Schumacher scored four wins in five attempts from San Marino to Canada. After that, Williams took the advantage, with two 1-2 finishes in Europe and France. With six races remaining, the standings were as follows:

M. Schumacher - 66
R. Schumacher - 60
Räikkönen - 58
Montoya - 52

Ralf Schumacher subsequently lost all pace, scoring only two further points, but Montoya gained momentum. He and Räikkönen won the next two races, then took advantage of another Schumacher bad performance in Hungary.

Räikkönen - 76
M. Schumacher - 74
Montoya - 71

They stayed just as close after Italy, but the United States Grand Prix was a close-fought affair, and the big loser was Montoya, who only came eighth while Schumacher took a second straight win and a five-point lead going to Suzuka. In Japan, he made things harder for himself, only qualifying 14th to Räikkönen's 8th. Kimi made it up to third by lap 10, while Schumacher took 33 laps just to reach the points. Barrichello took his only win of the season, while Räikkönen took second after fierce competition from Coulthard. Schumacher only managed to finish a lowly thirteenth. Räikkönen had won the race points championship, while Schumacher had won an unprecedented eleventh title on lap points.

Further behind, Sauber take an unexpected 3-4 finish in the USA, Mark Webber takes a stunning third place in the Jaguar in Hungary and Cristiano da Matta takes the Toyota to places it had no right to be, such as multiple laps in the lead at Silverstone leading to fourth place.

Giancarlo Fisichella scored Jordan's only notable result in Brazil, with a late charge straight to the lead gave him seventh place in the race and a permanent lead over Minardi, who managed 12 points, and more importantly, their very first three-race points scoring streak from Australia to Brazil.

The SCHUMIWINSLOL reached its peak in 2004, with records set for most race and lap points, and the record for the most wins tied, with 12.

Jenson Button scored his (and BAR's) maiden Grand Prix victory in Italy, while Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli were the only two drivers to break the Schumacher domination before Belgium, with wins in Monaco and France respectively.

Defending champion Kimi Räikkönen had a dismal year due to his McLaren's chronic lack of performance, but in the second half of the season, he managed four podiums and a stunning win in a topsy-turvy Belgian Grand Prix, which also saw fourth place for Antônio Pizzonia and an impressive haul of lap points for the returning Ricardo Zonta.

Olivier Panis

While Kimi Räikkönen proved to be as a whole quicker than Fernando Alonso, his McLaren had a bad habit of failing in qualifying, putting him at a constant disadvantage. When things went well, he did very well indeed, scoring four consecutive wins between Spain and Canada, but when they didn't, Alonso was free to lead the way and score colossal points hauls. Räikkönen stayed in the hunt until the end of the year, but was ultimately unable to make up for his car's failures.

Michael Schumacher, meanwhile, managed to score two wins in the much slower Ferrari. At Williams, Webber and Heidfeld had a great start to the year, before having a miserable second half. Despite this, they scored three podiums between them. David Coulthard scored a brilliant podium in the first race for Red Bull Racing, before spending the rest of the year doing nothing as teammate Klien slowly gained pace. At Sauber, Felipe Massa sealed Jacques Villeneuve's fate as a backmarker.

It's a lot less close than real life. In fact, Hamilton seals the title with a race to spare. But despite this relatively trouble-free win for McLaren (they were 1-2 in the championship after a handful of races and never changed thereafter), Ferrari had the better car, shown by their ten race victories, six of them for Felipe Massa, who won the most races despite only finishing the year in fourth place. BMW was a clear third, with Heidfeld scoring race points in all races but Europe including two podiums.

This season, a young Sebastian Vettel became the 300th driver to score a lap point, doing so in the United States. He then scored race points in Japan and China, finishing behind teammate Liuzzi in the latter in a 5-6 finish, Toro Rosso's best. Even further back, Winkelhock scored Spyker's only 61 lap points in Europe, while Super Aguri score a total of 133 lap points, spread over a handful of races.

Ralf Schumacher
Best championship finish of 4th (2001 and 2002 race and lap points and 2003 lap points)

Alexander Wurz

Early on, it looked like there would be many championship contenders, including Hamilton, Massa, Räikkönen, Kubica and Kovalainen, but after a while, Kovalainen dropped back. Kubica led after his popular surprise victory in Canada, and Räikkönen led around the mid-season, but Massa then took the lead, with Hamilton close behind. With a win in China, Hamilton got level with Massa going to the finale in Brazil. The reigning champion spent the whole race in the lower reaches of the points while Massa dominated and scored his first double title. On race wins, Hamilton and Massa both scored five, Räikkönen four, Alonso two, Kubica and Vettel one each.

Rejects-wise, Glock and Piquet don't get podiums, but Webber does. Adrian Sutil secures sixth in Monaco, and Sébastien Bourdais is unrejectified thanks to his performances in Belgium and Japan. Fisichella, Nakajima and Button are the only non-Super Aguri drivers not to score lap points.

David Coulthard
Runner-up in the championship once (1997 race points)
Third place in the championship (1995, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 race and lap points, 1997 lap points)
13 Grand Prix victories
64 podiums
548 race points
34952 lap points

Takuma Sato

2 podiums
42 race points
3090 lap points

Anthony Davidson
Best championship finish of 21st (2007 lap points)
55 lap points

Button absolutely dominated the early part of the season, with 6 wins in the first 7 races. Vettel and Barrichello stayed on his tail, and later Webber. While Vettel was the leading opponent in the early part of the year, both he and Button dropped off in the mid-season, allowing Barrichello and Webber to claw back some of the lost ground. Lewis Hamilton then started to perform outstandingly in a suddenly competitive McLaren, taking three wins. Vettel scored big points consistently, which contributed to a thrilling finale at Abu Dhabi, with three drivers involved. Webber was out of the race due to earlier mechanical issues in Italy, Singapore and Japan.

1. Button - 78
2. Vettel - 77
3. Barrichello - 73.5

Vettel took the early lead with Webber in tow, and it was thus that the race ended and the championship was won for the young German driver, only 22 years old. Button still took the title on lap points however, making 2009 the seventh season which crowned two separate champions, after 1965, 1970, 1976, 1977, 1981 and 2003.

Sebastian Vettel started the season in style with victories in Bahrain and Malaysia, with only Button staying relatively close, winning in Australia and China. Kubica, Massa and Rosberg all scored two podiums during those four races and were also surprise contenders. But then, Mark Webber suddenly started winning, dominating, even. He took three consecutive victories, two of them from start to finish, setting a record for most lap points in a single race (of course, helped by the new points system, rendering all previous records meaningless).

Webber ended up winning five races, and the mid-season was hard-fought with no particular driver taking advantage. Felipe Massa scored a popular victory one year after his accident in Hungary, the highlight of Ferrari's season. However, by then, the title race boiled down to three drivers: Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber and LEwis Hamilton.

All three traded the lead of both championships until the Japanese Grand Prix, where Vettel dominated the race. From that point on, he never looked back, winning the final four races and both world titles with them, with one race to spare. Webber completed a Red Bull 1-2, with Hamilton and Button finishing third and fourth for McLaren (although Alonso beat Button on lap points). Robert Kubica, meanwhile, scored four podiums to beat Massa to sixth place. Along with Barrichello and Sutil, he was the one who most clearly dominated his teammate, although Hülkenberg and Petrov didn't embarrass themselves in their début seasons.

Of course, no review of 2010 shall go without mention of the new teams. Heikki Kovalainen scored 67 points in the new Lotus, even staying ahead of Sébastien Buemi until the Canadian Grand Prix. Glock and di Grassi also scored in the Virgin, 6 and 1 respectively. They and the HRT drivers were the only ones not to score race points, with the exception of Jaime Alguersuari, who nevertheless scored lap points in all but five races.
