The Lap Points Championship - Massa takes it!

Post by tommykl »

Let me explain how this works.

For every race where a lap chart is available (almost all of them), I give drivers points every lap. Say the points scheme is 10-6-4-3-2-1, a driver gets 10 points for each lap led, 6 points for each lap in second, and so on. After each race, the points are tallied up and the winner gets the usual 10 points.

There will be two tables for each season. One with the most points for overall race results (race points) and the other with the most total points racked up for each lap (lap points).

There are two aims here: to give points to a driver who had a great race only to retire a few laps from the end, partially removing unreliability from the equation, and to give some recognition to some underdogs who had some good runs only to unluckily fall by the wayside, like Luca Badoer or Nicola Larini.

In case you haven't noticed, I don't drop any points. This is because the main reason for dropped scores was to prevent losing a title due to unreliability. Since this doesn't factor in this championship, I won't drop any scores.

Much like in real life, 17 of the 21 available podiums go to Ferrari drivers. Some changes though: no podiums for Fischer or Hawthorn, but there's points for André Simon, while none go to Wharton, Thompson or Frère.

I think unreliability does play a part in this championship. For instance, Farina would have surely scored points at Monaco but a first-lap crash prevented that from happening. Or a competitive driver having an engine failure in lap 3...

Hence why I said that it "partially" removes reliability from the equation, not "completely". Of course it still plays a role, but a smaller one.

The missing lap chart for Italy robbed us of a thrilling fight for second place in the championship. With Fangio, Farina and Hawthorn in a tense battle with one race left, and fighting all the way through the Italian Grand Prix, it would have made for a great finale. Instead, Farina and Hawthorn both catch Fangio in Switzerland, Hawthorn barely winning. Hawthorn and Farina were the only breaks in the ASCARIWINSLOL steamroller. Ascari had the title sewn up after the British Grand Prix.

This season needs me to explain how tiebreakers are sorted.

As seen above, when equal on total points, the ties are broken by lap points, then on countback, as usual. For ties in a single race, the top position goes to the drive who spent the most laps in the highest position, then second highest, etc. In case of another tie, the driver who did it first gets the position.

Also, the Argentine Grand Prix was such a nightmare for scorers that there is no consistent lap chart for most shared cars. For the sake of my own mental health, I wrote down when I count the car switches.
#10 - Farina (1-50)/Maglioli (51-52, 75-94)/Trintignant (53-74)
#12 - Gonzalez (1-58, 92-93)/Farina (59-75, 94-96)/Trintignant (76-91)
#20 - Mantovani (1-29, 44)/Behra (30-43)/Musso (45-54)
#22 - Musso (1-50)/Mantovani (51-70)/Schell (71-83)
#26 - Bucci (1-30)/Menditeguy (31-40)/Schell (41-54)
#28 - Schell (1-50)/Behra (51-88)

This means that Musso and Schell did some laps twice. I'll just put this down to lapped cars and prevent myself from getting a stroke.

Fangio once again WinsLol, semi-retiring with four world titles and 18 race victories. Jean Behra takes a popular first victory in Great Britain. Fangio, meanwhile, loses his legendary victory in Germany, the race instead going to Hawthorn.

There was hope that Stirling Moss could take his second title in 1958, but Mike Hawthorn proved to be more reliable, scoring race points in every race bar Zandvoort, while Moss missed out in Monaco, Spa and Monza.

The paddock also lost many of its stars, with Peter Collins, Luigi Musso and Stuart Lewis-Evans all perishing during the season. Mike Hawthorn also tragically passed away early in 1959 after taking an early retirement.

Juan Manuel Fangio also retired from the sport after four world titles in 1951, 1954, 1955 and 1957. He ended with second place in Argentina and fourth in France.

Brabham led early on with four consecutive podiums and a win in Silverstone, but lost some pace in the second half of the season, leaving Moss to take a commanding six-point lead coming to Sebring. Moss retired after five laps in the lead, only enough for seventh place. Brabham would have to win, which he did, dominantly. Will Moss take a second title next year?

Some surprising results, such as a second victory for Jo Bonnier, a podium for Alan Stacey, lap points for Chris Bristow and a point for Brian Naylor. Brabham still takes his second title, though.

Much like in real life, Hill wins the title after von Trips is killed at Monza. However, here, Hill was already in the championship lead before Italy. Ricardo Rodriguez scores a point on début, and Giancarlo Baghetti doesn't win in France.

No major changes here. I was expecting Clark to be closer with unreliability taken into account, and he did indeed with the South African Grand Prix, but Hill benefited greatly early on when Clark could not, and he only dominated even more. He had the title wrapped up after Monza.

Interestingly, Bruce McLaren has not yet won a race. USA '59 went to Brabham, Argentina '60 to Bonnier and Monaco '62 to Hill.

If you thought Graham Hill WonLol in 1962, then this is pure domination. Clark won seven races out of ten, finishing second twice and fifth once. Clark broke the record for most wins in a season and most race and lap points in a season.

The title race went down to Mexico, with Clark leading on 45 points to Hill's 43 and Gurney's 40. Clark dominated the race and secured his second title, while Hill was taken out of contention after lap 30 (possibly intentionally) by Lorenzo Bandini, and Dan Gurney cruised to a comfortable second place while Hill was classified fifth and lost second place by a single point. John Surtees loses his world title and isn't even a serious player in the championship race at any point.

No race wins change hands, but Graham Hill takes the title on lap points. Of course, Clark dominates the race points title, but his absence in Monaco and low score in the USA allow Graham Hill to take more lap points with two dominant victories in the high-paying races in Monaco and Watkins Glen.

Jack Brabham still dominates, but Jochen Rindt takes second place from John Surtees in the championship and takes his maiden victory at Spa. Lorenzo Bandini is the biggest winner, led the championship after the French Grand Prix and finished fifth instead of ninth.

I thought Clark could steal this one, but Hulme actually inherited two more victories in South Africa and Canada. Clark did not win more races, and while he did gain six points on Hulme, the New Zealander had the title sewn up before Mexico. Unlike in real life, Graham Hill takes a win in Italy, while Dan Gurney doesn't win in the Eagle, but finishes sixth rather than eighth.

We had two very interesting fights throughout the season, for first and third places. Stewart and Hill were level on points going to Mexico, but Hill dominated and took his second world title, although Stewart won four races to Hill's three. For third place, New Zealanders Amon and Hulme fought all season long, and the young Amon eventually got third place by a single point.

Also, stop the presses, as Chris Amon has won a race!

Jochen Rindt lost a lot of points early on in the season and despite his three consecutive mid-season wins, he couldn't keep the lead to the end, leaving a brilliant championship fight between early leaders Brabham and Stewart and late-season charger Jacky Ickx. Brabham failed to make any impact in the second half of the season, leaving Ickx and Stewart to fight for the title, which was decided in the final race. With a dominant victory, Ickx took the race points title while Stewart clinched the lap points title.

Stewart completely dominates the season. Peterson wins the Italian Grand Prix while the man who led the last lap, Peter Gethin, was only classified ninth! Peterson bags second place in his first season in competitive machinery.

It seems closer than it actually was. Once Fittipaldi had his title sewn up, his performance dropped while Stewart won the last two rounds. Emerson actually secured it with two races left.

Ronnie Peterson wins the title in popular and undisputed fashion, scoring seven race victories. While Stewart and Fittipaldi scrapped over the championship lead early on, Peterson's second win at Anderstorp allowed him to return to the championship battle. After the British Grand Prix, Fittipaldi led the championship with 47 points to Stewart's 46 and Peterson's 44, but the Swede won four of the six remaining races, taking the title, and while all three were still in contention at Watkins Glen, the title was decided beforehand.

François Cevert, Stewart's teammate who had won the season opener, but only scoring three more podiums, was killed in a qualifying accident. Stewart and Tyrrell decided to pull out of the race, leaving only Fittipaldi as possible contender to Peterson's lead. However, a gentlemen's agreement between the two confirmed that Emerson would not attempt to beat Ronnie. Peterson dominated the race and secured both titles.

Cevert died with two race victories, while Jackie Stewart retired with a combined five world titles (race points in 1969 and 1971 and lap points in 1969, 1970 and 1971) and a record 28 race victories.

The championship fight may have appeared closer at times, but ultimately, the Ferraris were the dominant cars. Niki Lauda had a slow-ish start to the season, but easily led the championship after the British Grand Prix. A two-race dry spell allowed teammate Clay Regazzoni to be within one point of the title lead with three races left, but dominant performances from the Austrian gave him his first two titles. Behind those two, Fittipaldi, Peterson, Scheckter and Reutemann were involved in an extremely close fight for third place, although Reutemann was largely excluded from it due to his extreme lack of consistency. Indeed, aside from his four dominant victories, he rarely scored at all, and went seven races without a point in the mid-season.

From a reject perspective, the main event of the season was Tim Schenken briefly running in third position in the Trojan at Nivelles during a pitstop phase. He quickly dropped back and was eventually classified twelfth.

The sport also says goodbye to 1967 world champion Denny Hulme. He retires with eight race victories and 27 podium finishes.

All you've done is encourage unreliability! A rocketing but exploding car will always get decent points!

Yes but it can get even better points if it stays on the road. If you deliberately build an unreliable car you're just opening the door for your opponent to score points. ;)

Obviously you wouldn't deliberately do it. You'd just give more weight to raw pace against reliability than you normally would when designing a car. If, you know, this existed.

The main point was to reward great performances that were ended prematurely. Of course, this includes a driver dominating every race but retiring a few laps from the end, so if this did exist, obviously most teams would go for raw pace rather than reliability, but some would also go for a reliable car in order to benefit from early retirements.

And we've got a decent amount of championship changes, so that's something :P

No, you aren't dreaming. Rolf Stommelen won the Spanish Grand Prix just before his tragic accident. Not only was it his first win, but it also marked a victory for what was a reject team in real life: Embassy Hill.

Re: The Lap Points Championship - Stommelen wins a race!

Post by tommykl »

Slight correction for some seasons: I forgot to enforce disqualifications. The ones I missed have been rectified. Basically, all race and lap points are forfeited, race points redistributed, lap points not. There are no championship changes, but one podium is lost, as are a few points finishes. Most notably, Cevert loses second place on lap points in 1971 to Ronnie Peterson. Not due to a disqualification for Cevert, but rather Jo Siffert's exclusion in Germany, allowing Peterson to gain one point, tying the Frenchman and winning out on lap points.

Niki Lauda WONLOL at the start of the season, with five wins in nine races. However, on the second lap of the German Grand Prix, he was severely injured, and while he was expected to sit out at least one year, he returned for the Italian Grand Prix. By that time, James Hunt had narrowed the gap to a single point, with Jody Scheckter close behind in the Tyrrell P34. However, before the Canadian Grand Prix, Hunt's second place in Britain was stripped from him. Therefore, with three races remaining, the standings were the following:

1. Lauda - 61
2. Hunt - 52
3. Scheckter - 43

hunt won the race, Scheckter came fourth and Lauda sixth, leaving all three in the title race. Lauda was leading by a single point from Hunt, with Scheckter 16 points behind Lauda. The South African won the United States Grand Prix, but with Hunt second and Lauda third, he was knocked out of the title fight.

With one race remaining, Hunt had a one-point advantage over Lauda, although the Austrian had already sealed the title on lap points (his fifth title). Appalled by the atrocious weather conditions, Lauda withdrew after two laps, leaving Hunt to dominate the race and take the title. That race also saw local hero Kazuyoshi Hoshino score 50 lap points early on!

Another split title.

Throughout the season, the championship was insanely close, with Hunt, Lauda, Andretti, Scheckter and Watson each within just a few points of each other. After the German Grand Prix, Brabham's performance dropped massively, and Lauda began pulling away, leaving Hunt, Andretti and Scheckter to fight over second roughly ten points behind. After Watkins Glen (won by Hunt), here's how the championship fight looked.

1. Lauda - 66
2. Scheckter - 55
3. Andretti - 54
4. Hunt - 49

Then, Lauda decided to leave Ferrari. The three drivers behind him all had a realistic shot, except maybe Hunt, who would need to win both races. However, all three would end up taking points off each other. Andretti won in Canada, leaving him just three points behind Lauda, while Scheckter came fourth and Hunt second. Andretti would need a simple fourth place, and a podium if Scheckter were to win. Instead, Scheckter came fourth while Andretti retired on lap two in Japan. Hunt won the race, and Lauda won his sixth world title. Andretti managed to take his first title on lap points.

ANDRETTIWINSLOL describes this season pretty well, as Andretti won both titles, taking his total to three. But there were still some surprises up and down the field.

-Riccardo Patrese won the South African Grand Prix for Arrows in only the team's second race.
-Jean-Pierre Jarier scored his second career victory after a dominant performance in Montreal for Lotus.
-Derek Daly was set for fourth place for Ensign in Austria when he was disqualified for getting a push start.
-Harald Ertl scored two lap points for the unknown Sachs Racing in Hockenheim.
-Also in Austria, René Arnoux scored a single lap point for the fledgling Martini team.

Finally, tragedy also struck this season, as double world champion Ronnie Peterson was killed in an accident in Monza. His life ended with two world titles (1973 on race and lap points), 12 Grand Prix victories (7 of them in 1973 alone) and 28 podiums.

As in real life, Ligier dominated the early part of the season with Laffite winning three times and Depailler scoring regular podiums to lead the championship after the Belgian Grand Prix. Shortly afterwards, he was injured in a hanggliding accident and Ligier fell behind Ferrari. Scheckter became the championship leader and had a lot to lose while Villeneuve stayed roughly his equal. Later on in the season, though, Alan Jones made a bid for the championship with three consecutive race victories in the Williams, only to lose his chance by not scoring in Italy. This left Scheckter with a 7-point lead over Villeneuve going to Canada. Jones was in mathematical contention, but only a long shot.

Scheckter's race was a disaster. He only scored 51 lap points and was classified seventh while Villeneuve dominated with Jones and took the win. With one race left, he had a two-point advantage, and with Scheckter's morale now destroyed, Villeneuve stomped the field in Watkins Glen to secure both championships in style with four wins, including a clean sweep in North America.

JONESWINSLOL describes this year perfectly. Laffite, Arnoux and Jabouille looked strong early on, but in the second part of the season, Piquet, Pironi and Reutemann took over. This meant that Jones was left to win without much of a challenge.

Carlos Reutemann dominated the early season, but after a bad race in Monaco, Piquet started reeling him in, eventually taking the championship lead three races from the end. By then, Jones and Prost had caught up, ending in a four-way battle for the title in Las Vegas.

1. Piquet - 54
2. Reutemann - 50
3. Prost - 47
4. Jones - 46

Jones won the race, eliminating Prost, who finished second, in turn eliminating Reutemann, who didn't even score. Piquet needed a top five finish, and duly came fifth, securing the title by a single point. Jones, after winning the season opener and the season closer, won the title on lap points.
