Two new models, both of them reject drivers and both welcome additions to my ever-growing Minardi collection:

Because it's from a test in the winter before the 2002 season. Minardi had Michelin tyres in 2001 and 2002.

Finally, I think I’ve found somewhere where I can unashamedly talk about a project I undertook a year or so ago. I’ve been boring various parents and friends about it to no avail!

Basically, like Faustus I’m a big fan of F1 1989-92 era as it was the time I got into F1 as a youth, and while watching "James May’s Toy Stories" last year I was inspired to come up with a challenge for myself based on my childhood love. The challenge was seemingly simple: to create a feasible 26-car grid of 1:43 cars from this era.

I set some parameters:
- teams cannot have two cars from different years
- drivers cannot appear twice
- an average cost limit (thus effectively limiting myself to diecast models by ONYX although a couple of Minichamps were necessary)

This threw up all sorts of headaches. For example I could not conceivably have two Footwork and two Larrouses on the grid, as the only diecast Footwork car produced was in ’92 (Alboreto/Suzuki), whereas the Larrouses from ’89, ’90 or ’91 featured either of these two drivers! The more you look into it, the more confusing it becomes due to the lack of teams produced, especially in 1989. What I would have given for a set of Warwick-Cheever Arrows cars!

Anyway, after much head scratching and months of ferreting away on Ebay and other websites, I finally reached the goal of a full grid, and present to you my ‘Fantasy Parc Ferme':

Image

(NB Not sure why but Senna and part of Hill have been chopped off the right hand side)

Naturally I wanted them to be placed in some kind of grid order, so I looked at each driver’s average grid position in the year of the car used in my Fantasy Grid. So for example Alesi averaged 6.1 on the grid in 1991, so places him above Nannini who averaged 8.8 in 1989.

My Fantasy Grid reads as follows:

1. NIGEL MANSELL (Williams ’92)
2. AYRTON SENNA (McLaren ’90)
3. RICCARDO PATRESE (Williams ’92)
4. GERHARD BERGER (McLaren ’90)
5. ALAIN PROST (Ferrari ’91)
6. JEAN ALESI (Ferrari ’91)
7. ALESSANDRO NANNINI (Benetton ’89)
8. STEFANO MODENA (Tyrrell ’91)
9. PIERLUIGI MARTINI (Minardi ’90)
10. JOHNNY HERBERT (Lotus ’92)
11. THIERRY BOUTSEN (Ligier ’92)
12. ANDREA DE CESARIS (Jordan ’91)
13. ERIK COMAS (Ligier ’92)
14. MIKA HAKKINEN (Lotus ’92)
15. MICHELE ALBORETO (Footwork ’92)
16. AGURI SUZUKI (Larrouse ’90)
17. IVAN CAPELLI (March ’89)
18. ALEX CAFFI (Dallara ’89)
19. BERTRAND GATCHOT (Jordan ’91)
20. ERIC BERNARD (Larrouse ’90)
21. SATORU NAKAJIMA (Tyrrell ’91)
22. EMANUELLE PIRRO (Benetton ’89)
23. MAURICIO GUGELMIN (March ’89)
24. PAULO BARILLA (Minardi ’90)
25. ERIC VAN DE POELE (Brabham ’92)
26. DAMON HILL (Brabham ’92)

There are only two real 'rejects' in that grid (Barilla and Van De Poele), but still it was a great project to undertake.

The only two things that saddened me about the grid I made were (i) no Nelson Piquet and (ii) no number 1 car! I partially solved that by recently buying the '88 Piquet Lotus, even if it can't compete in my fantasy race.

That's an epic first post. Must resist spending money I don't have on eBay to make a similar fantasy grid...

Thank you Faustus, yes they are all orriginal Onyx cars except for the two Brabhams by Minichamps. Good job Hill won the title to convince Minichamps to make those Brabhams!

Since then I've been collecting a few others which I will hopefully get a chance to show off, but in the meantime a question to ponder... who would win in this reject race?

I met my 6th Year (last year of school) dean yesterday - in a glass cabinet in his office he has every Jordan from 1991 to 2005. Pretty impressive. I asked him about it and at home he has a similar display with a car from every season.

One of the maths teachers I had for the last year was a huge Formula 1 and Alonso fan, she's met Mark Webber and she hates the way all of the drivers say "for sure".

Before I found that out, I was slightly bored in her lessons. Saying that I was slightly bored by maths in general.

Im not sure what circuit it is, but I think it was a Hungarian sponsor, or perhaps it was where HWNSNBM started carting

I'm guessing the Gazprom sponsorship is the integral clue to the puzzle. Now, Gazprom is a Russian gas company so the logical answer would be the Hungarian Grand Prix as it's the only Eastern European race on the calender. However, Davidson was driving the Minardi instead of Yoong which meant I was back to square one. Then I looked at the list of Gazprom subsidiaries and there is a company in Germany wholly owned by Gazprom operating under basically the same name which meant that it should leave two choices, Europe and Germany. Since Jeroen guessed Europe and got it wrong that leaves the German Grand Prix as the logical answer.

Then again I could be wrong and everything I said could be utter crap.

From the third photo here, you can see that it isn't Germany. I've checked a contemporary annual which shows Gazprom stickers on the car from Hungary onwards (with an increase in size from Belgium onwards). The model can therefore be of the PS02 as it was liveried in Italy, the USA, or Japan.

The Forza Minardi book has a couple of pictures of the car in Monza and although it's difficult to tell given the angles, it looks like that livery to me. Also, I notice Beta tools on there which is an Italian company (though also a long-time sponsor of Minardi so that could mean nothing!) so I'm guessing it's from Italy.

These models go into such details.

3 more Minardi models:

This one is a reject, as well:

This is a strange model and I'm not sure why Minichamps bothered to release it, but I'm not complaining, because I think it looks very cool:

And finally the Arrows A23... I mean, Minardi PS04:

I really need to slow down on the model purchases.

Andrea Moda wrote:Great idea Faustus. I wonder if Minichamps have already considered doing it themselves with the TF109 casting.

One question though - are you sure that is the model you would like to use? That is a 2009 showcar rather than the TF109 race car and all Minichamps showcars for 2009 were based on a 'generic' design as the 2008 cars were visually too different from the 2009-spec cars to use as showcars.

Personally, I thought this was disappointing as they had absolutely no resemblance to the real cars.

Arse! Arse! Arse! Arse!
You are absolutely right. It never occurred to me that the showcars would be so different from the race cars. I have other showcar models and they're almost the same as the racecars, apart from the livery. Well spotted and thank you!
The front wing endplates, the front wing mounts, the headrest and the exhausts are different and the sidepods have an extension. Bollocks. Actually, the nosecone is higher, so pretty much the front of the car is different. shite.
Oh well, the plan is still good, it's just a case of getting another model.
I will probably end up using the Glock showcar as a test, because it I doubt I'll be able to sell it back on eBay. It was pretty cheap anyway and I can practice my masking skills on it.
The decals experiments are still ongoing.

And the project is back on! I finally found a TF109 for a decent price, so I can strip it of paint, decals and varnish, prime it and spray it, hopefully this weekend.

Thanks for the photos dr-baker!
That is the one and at the same time it isn't, if that makes sense.
The livery is very similar but it looks cooler with the coloured geometric shapes in the sidepods, monocoque and rear wing. Looks better than the normal car.
The showcar itself looks a little bizarre. It's not the Toyota TF109, because the front wing mounts and endplates and engine cover are different, which is to be expected from a showcar, I guess. I'm not sure which car it's based on.
By the way, would you say that the overall black was sort of semi-glossy? It's definitely not matt black, despite the fact that it looks it in some photos, but it doesn't look very glossy.
