Mark Donohue Memorial Championship

Post by Ducktanian »

This is pretty much like those alternative championships that eliminate all the driver champions, except with constructor champions!
Now, they aren't all being excluded from the start as that will make the 60's a bit sparse. Especially 1969 where the only valid entry will be Al Pease's Disqualified Eagle
Instead they are being excluded after they win their first constructor's championship in real life!

This is going to get a bit boring from the mid-nineties onwards... I am intrigued nonetheless.

My WCC predictions for each year:

1963 - Jim Clark and Lotus will blow away the competition.
1964 - Dan Gurney and Brabham.
1965 - Dan Gurney and Brabham.
1966 - Black Jack in his own car.
1967 - John Surtees and Honda.
1968 - Stewart vs. Hulme. I think Jackie's injury will cost him dearly. McLaren will definitely win the Constructors' title.
1969 - JYS compensates for '68.
1970 - Not an easy one to call. March will defintely win the WCC, but I suspect it will be close between Stewart and Rodríguez. I'll say Stewart.
1971 - Three in a row for Jackie and Ken Tyrrell.
1972 - Hulme and McLaren.
1973 - Big intra-team battle between Revson and Hulme. I'm thinking Pete's going to win this.
1974 - Fittipaldi and McLaren.
1975 - Would love to see Hunt win in the Hesketh.
1976 - Ligier vs. Penske. I'm thinking Penske and John Watson.
1977 - Wolf will have it pretty easy.
1978 - Close between Wolf and Ligier. I think the unreliability of the Wolf will let them down and Laffite will take the title.
1979 - Two in a row for Laffite and Ligier.
1980 - Jones and Williams dominate.
1981 - Laffite for the Drivers' title, but in a year where Ligier may as well have been a one-car operation I think Renault will take the WCC.
1982 - Prost and Renault
1983 - Prost and Renault.
1984 - Derek Warwick... and Renault.
1985 - I'm thinking Jacques Laffite for the WDC, but I'm going to be bold and say Arrows for the WCC. They had a more reliable car.
1986 - Laffite would win if he hadn't retired after Brands, so I think Berger will win. Ligier will still take the WCC.
1987 - Fabi vs. Boutsen, and I have a sneaking suspicion that Fabi will win this.
1988 - Benetton will own this and Boutsen will win.
1989 - Benetton will get their third different winner in a row with Nannini.
1990 - Piquet to win his first title and another WCC for Benetton.
1991 - Piquet and Benetton again.
1992 - Schumacher will dominate.
1993 - Schumacher will dominate again.
1994 - Benetton have officially become early 2000s Ferrari.
1995 - Benetton are forced out of the sport by the FIA for being too successful. :P
1996 - Now that I think about it it's going to be all midfield teams now. I will say Rubinho and Jordan.
1997 - Panis will be the great what if story. He loses the drivers' title to Fisichella. The Constructors' Championship I think will be a close call but I'll say Jordan.
1998 - Hill and Jordan.
1999 - Frentzen and Jordan.
2000 - I'm predicting a close battle between BAR and Jordan, but for the sake of variety I will say BAR and Villeneuve.
2001 - Nick Heidfeld will win races and the Championship in a Sauber.
2002 - Renault are back and their drivers will fight it out for the title. My money's on Button.
2003 - Alonso and Renault.
2004 - Button and BAR walkover.
2005 - Alonso and Renault dominate.
2006 - Button and Honda.
2007 - BMW dominate with Heidfeld and Kubica. Nick will win another title.
2008 - BMW dominate again only this time Robert wins.
2009 - Button and Brawn.
2010 - Vettel and Red Bull.
2011 - Rosberg and Mercedes.
2012 - Raikkonen and Lotus or Rosberg and Mercedes depending on how you consider Lotus in relation to Colin Chapman's team.
2013 - Hamilton and Mercedes.

I think he said that precisely because of a lack of constructors at some points, he's only taking out constructors who won in real life, and not one constructor every year. So basically, he's just taking out all the constructors who won the title, except before they actually win it.

Yeah, I should have been more clear on that.
Yeah the constructors are being eliminated as they win in real life.
I've edited the opening post to make that clearer.
And don't worry, the early 90's might still be dull, but for a different reason :P

1950-1957 don't have a Constructors Championship yet.
1958 is the first year so no-one is excluded yet.
for 1959 only Vanwall are excluded and there only contribution is Tony Brooks' retirement in France so no real change there.

So we start with 1960!

1960

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper)

(No Indy 500; Dropped Scores Rules Apply)

With Cooper gone this becomes a straight between Lotus and Ferrari.
Stirling Moss' accident in Belgium put paid to any chance of him having a realistic champion fight.
After that it quickly became a close fight between the Ferrari's of Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Trips and the Lotus's of Jim Clark and Innes Ireland.
But despite Phil Hill's win in Italy it wasn't enough to beat...

Image
INNES IRELAND and LOTUS

Driver's Championship Results:
1. Innes Ireland - 32pts
2. Phil Hill - 29pts
3. Wolfgang von Trips - 25pts [26] - Dropped a 6th in Monaco
4. Jim Clark - 22pts
5. Stirling Moss - 20pts
6. Richie Ginther - 11pts (1 2nd)
7. Jo Bonnier - 11pts (2 3rds)
=8 Cliff Allison - 8pts (1 win)
=8 John Surtees - 8pts (1 win)
10. Graham Hill - 8pts (1 2nd)
11. Ron Flockhart - 6pts
12. Willy Maresse - 4pts
13. Jim Hall - 3pts
=14 Dan Gurney - 2pts
=14 Hans Herman - 2pts
=14 Chuck Daigh - 2pts
=17 Alberto Rodriguez Larreta - 1pt
=17 Maurice Trintignant - 1pt
=17 Edgar Barth - 1pt
=17 Bob Drake - 1pt

Constructors Championship
1. Lotus - 48pts [58]
2. Ferrari - 40 pts [46]
3. BRM - 19pts
=4 Porsche - 2pts
=4 Scarab - 2pts
=6 Aston Martin - 1pt
=6 Maserati - 1pt

1961

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper)
(Dropped Scores Rules Apply)

Cooper didn't perform as well in 1961, leaving this pretty much unchanged as far as the title fight is concerned. The Ferraris of Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Trips dominate as in real life, with their nearest challenger being Dan Gurney in the Porsche as Stirling Moss retired too much to raise a real challange.
Wolfgang von Trips tragically dies at Monza which leaves the championship title at the feet of...

PHIL HILL AND FERRARI

Driver's Championship Results
1. Phil Hill - 34pts [38]
2. Wolfgang von Trips - 33pts
3. Dan Gurney - 22pts [26]
4. Stirling Moss - 21pts
5. Richie Ginther - 17pts
6. Jim Clark - 13pts
7. Innes Ireland - 12pts - Poor Performance from the World Champion but he does win in America!
8. Giancarlo Baghetti - 9pts (1 win)
9. Tony Brooks - 9pts (2 3rds)
10. Jo Bonnier - 7pts
11. Graham Hill - 6pts
=12 Oliver Gendebien - 3pts
=12 Carel Godin du Beaufort - 3pts
14. Tim Parnell - 2pts
=15 Cliff Allison - 1pt
=15 Henry Taylor - 1pt

Constructors Championship Results

1. Ferrari - 40pts [52]
2. Lotus - 32pts [34]
3. Porsche - 23pts [27]
4. BRM - 12pts

...They aren't all gonna be this close :P
Also goodbye to Ferrari!

1962

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari)
(Dropped Score Rules Apply)

With Cooper and Ferrari both gone, the first half of the year becomes a 3-way fight between Graham Hill (BRM), Jim Clark (Lotus) and John Surtees (Lola), with Graham Hill and John Surtees tied in points after Britain. But of course, starting in Germany, Graham Hill dominates the rest of the season, with Jim Clark's win in America sealing his 2nd place with John Surtees retiring from the last 3 races.
There is also a exciting battle for 3rd in the constructors between Lola and Porsche, but the man of the hour is...

2. Jim Clark - 32pts

10. Innes Ireland - 5pts (1 3rd)
11. Maston Gregory - 5pts (2 5ths)
=12 Nino Vaccarella - 3pts (1 4th)
=12 Neville Lederle - 3pts (1 4th)
14. Maurice Trintigant - 3pts (1 5th)
15. Bruce Johnstone - 1pt

Constructors Championship Results
1. BRM - 42pts [62]
2. Lotus - 37pts [48]
3. Lola - 29pts
4. Porsche - 27pts [32] - Ouch!
5. Brabham - 10pts

I see. The chances of Pascal Fabre winning the championship have been significantly reduced. Now it's going to be very interesting. I will amend my predictions. :D

1963

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari; BRM)
(You get the idea about the dropped scores by now)

Jim Clark dominated 1963 in real life, so of course here he wins every single race bar the season opener in Monaco where he comes 2nd to fellow Lotus driver Trevor Taylor!
The battle of 2nd was between the 2 Brabham drivers with Sir Jack winning out due to a single 4th place, otherwise his scoreboard was tied with Dan Gurney.
Lotus get a perfect score to win their 2nd (and last) constructors' title

JIM CLARK AND LOTUS

Driver's Championship Results
1. Jim Clark - 54pts [87]
2. Jack Brabham - 29pts [30]
3. Dan Gurney - 26pts
4. Jim Hall - 19pts
5. Trevor Taylor - 15pts
6. Carel Godin du Beaufort - 14pts
7. Innes Ireland - 10pts
8. Jo Siffert - 8pts
9. Gerhard Mitter - 6pts (1 2nd)
10. Chris Amon - 6pts (1 3rd)
11. Mike Hailwood - 5pts
=12 Tony Settember - 3pts
=12 Peter Broeker - 3pts
=12 Hap Sharp - 3pts
15. Doug Serrurier - 2pts
=16 Maurice Trintigant - 1pt
=16 Maston Gregory - 1pt
=16 Phil Hill - 1pt - I didn't expect to see him here to be honest, I forgot he drove for ATS.

Championship Constructor Title
1. Lotus - 54pts [90]
2. Brabham - 36pts [43]
3. Porsche - 20pts
4. BRP - 10pts
5. Lola - 8pts

1964

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari; BRM; Lotus)

The only big team left now is Brabham, so 1964 becomes a fight between the various Brabham drivers with Innes Ireland in the BRP breaking Brabham's prefect score with a win in Italy. Jo Siffert didn't perform well enough in the first half of the year to form a real challenge so the real showdown was between Dan Gurney, Jack Brabham and Bob Anderson.
Bob Anderson won the first 2 races to take an early lead but after retiring in Germany, Jack Brabham had bought the scores level with Dan Gurney close behind.

Simtek wrote:1964 - Dan Gurney and Brabham.

Driver's Championship Title

7. Trevor Taylor - 10pts
8. Hap Sharp - 4pts
9. Ronnie Bucknum - 3pts

Constructors Championship Title
1. Brabham - 54pts [87]
2. BRP - 35pts
3. Honda - 3pts

I was going to say Force India will probably win this year but then realised Mercedes are (probably) still in as there was no constructors championship in the mid 50s, and winning under a former guise (Brawn) doesn't count.....

Actually given how some the other alternative championships have worked out, The Hulk could well win 2012 depending on Enstone not being eligible - I seem to remember he beat Rosberg in the young drivers' championship for that year as Rosberg faded badly late on.

I should mention at this point that if nobody eligible actually finishes the race, the race acts like it ended when the last driver retired.
So far this hasn't really affected anything, but its worth noting now.

1965

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari; BRM; Lotus)

Brabham reign supreme again, with the only real challenge coming from Richie Ginther in the Honda, whose 3 retirement and 2 non-entries prevent him from mounting a real title challenge.
Jo Siffert won the first 2 races to appear as the early title favourite as Jack Brabham's challenge faded quickly, but starting in Britain, Dan Gurney recovered from his terrible start to the season and started chasing down Siffert's lead with 5 wins on the trot, to eclispe Siffert's total and ease to the title.
And so the winners are...

1966

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari; BRM; Lotus)

Jack Brabham won the title in real life, so as you can probably guess, its a complete walkover for him. Brabham won every race he finished, and Brabham probably would have scored a perfect in the Constructors if engine troubles hadn't taken out both Brabhams at Watkins Glen, leaving the new McLaren team to take the victory.

But of course the title was always going to go to...

1967

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari; BRM; Lotus; Brabham)

With all 5 main teams excluded, and McLaren and Matra not participating over the course of a full season, this season is a bit ridiculous as a result.
Thus the title fight comes between John Surtees (Honda), and Dan Gurney (Eagle).
Unfortunately for Dan Gurney, he retires far too much to be an actual threat to John Surtees, and thus the title goes to...

Image
JOHN SURTEES AND HONDA

And we have our first constructor that didn't win a championship in real life!
And yet another real life driver's champion.

Driver's Championship Results
1. John Surtees - 54pts
2. Dan Gurney - 27pts

2. Eagle - 27pts

=3 Matra - 15pts

1968

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari; BRM; Lotus; Brabham)

Right from the offset this was always going to be between McLaren and Matra with John Surtees in the Honda putting up a valient effort, but being plagued with horrid reliability.
Denny Hulme won the first 3 races on the trot with Bruce McLaren and Jackie Stewart not scoring any points at all, giving Hulme a demanding lead just 3 races in.
Jackie Stewart chased Hulme throughout the entire season but it was just too big of a lead to hunt down. And so, despite not scoring in the last 2 races, the winner is...

1969

(Excluded Constructors: Cooper; Ferrari; BRM; Lotus; Brabham)

Jackie Stewart won the title in real life pretty easily, and with Jacky Ickx excluded he even gains a win in Germany. The real battle is for 2nd between the 2 McLarens and Jean Pierre Beltoise, with Denny Hulme having a disappointing second half of the season (bar his win in Mexico), and Bruce McLaren holding on to 2nd place by 2 points.
And so, just as in real life, the winner is...

6. Vic Elford - 10pts

Constructor's Championship Results

1. Matra - 81pts [87]
2. McLaren - 58pts [62]

With Matra gone, March take up the challenge of opposing McLaren, who are headed by Denny Hulme after Bruce McLaren's fatal accident at Goodwood.
The season starts as a Hulme v Stewart duel as the 2 former championship trade wins. however after France, Stewart fails to finish in 6 of the remaining 7 races, putting him out of contention as March teammate Chris Amon takes the fight to Hulme, they trade wins, but it looks like Amon is simply too far behind until 2 wins in Canada and USA put him ahead of Hulme going into the final race. Its an epic showdown and taking the win and title in Mexico is...

Wow, it seems I was way off the mark with 1970! I thought missing two rounds entirely would cost Hulme à la Stewart in '68. Absolutely gutted for Chris Amon though... Also, I just realised I predicted Pedro Rodríguez to be a contender without realising he was driving for BRM! :P

After a year of having to deal with a sub-optimal March chassis whilst developing an in-house car in secret, this year Stewart and Tyrrell were back with a vengeance! Just like 1969, Stewart dominates the year, winning 7 times. Ronnie Peterson was his nearest challenger in the March, but the March just didn't have the pace of the Tyrrell. McLaren on the other hand had a terrible year, finishing LAST in the Constructor's Championship.
And so, winning his second (and last) title is...

1972

Denny Hulme (McLaren) starts his hunt for a 3rd title to a great start with 2 wins to gain the early initiative, but Ronnie Peterson (March) wins in both France and Britain to close the gap to just 3 points with 4 races to go, but sadly the championship ends up being an anti-climax with Peterson scoring just 4 points to Hulme's 24! over the course of the next 3 races.
The final race of the season was close, but by then it was too late, the title was already firmly in the hands of...

1973

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; BRM; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell)

McLaren are far and away the quickest team still eligible and thus the title fight comes down between the two main drivers, Peter Revson and Denny Hulme.
Just like last year Hulme wins the first 2 races to gain the early lead. Revson responds with 2 wins in Kyalami and Monaco, but Hulme's early consistency means that even though he has to drop 4 points, he has a 15 point lead come the halfway point. However, Hulme has a terrible 2nd half of the season and Revson scores 2 more wins in Silverstone and Monza to come within a single point of Hulme with 2 races to go. James Hunt in the March is the nearest challenger with 3 wins but he didn't participate throughout the whole season. And so, with an excellent win in Canada, the title goes to...

A profiled reject team win a race. Nice. :)

(Oops, I was getting Tecno and Token/Trojan confused, oops. Tecno were in a worst ever teams feature in Autosport in around 1998, and each team was given a Roberto Moreno rating, as he tended to drive for most of them. :) )

1974

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; BRM; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell)

McLaren once again dominate proceedings, with the first 3 races each being won by a different McLaren drive (Fittipaldi, Hulme & Hailwood) At first it looks like another intra-team battle is on the cards, but from the 4th race onwards Fittipaldi always finishes ahead of his teammates. Hulme wins two more times where Fittipaldi retires but its not nearly enough. Once again the nearest challenger is James Hunt, this time in the Hesketh, who wins twice but is let down by reliability. March are best of the rest in terms of the teams in a closely fought 2nd place. But just like in real life the championships are won by...

Image

EMERSON FITTIPALDI AND MCLAREN

As a side note, 1974 had this weird thing where there is no tiebreaker system for some reason [ i.e. countback isn't relevant] :|

Drivers Championship Results
1. Emerson Fittipaldi - 84pts [87]
2. Denny Hulme - 54pts - Only finished ahead of Fittipaldi ONCE. Kinda disappointing.
3. Mike Hailwood - 37pts - Actually lead the championship briefly in the early races.
4. James Hunt - 34pts
5. Graham Hill - 25pts
6. Jean-Pierre Jarier - 23pts
7. Hans-Joachim Stuck - 18pts
8. Vittorio Brambilla - 15pts
=9 Tom Pryce - 14pts

=18 Helmuth Koinigg - 2pts
=18 Rolf Stommelen - 2pts
=21 Tim Schenken - 1pt
=21 Tom Belso - 1pt
=21 Dieter Quester - 1pt - Got a point in his only F1 race start.

Constructors Championship Title

1. McLaren - 111pts [117]
2. March - 38pts
3. Shadow - 36pts
4. Hesketh - 31pts
5. Lola - 28pts
6. Iso-Marlboro - 15pts
7. Surtees - 13pts - And so the team which has regularly finished in the top 3 fades into obscurity :P
8. Parnelli - 3pts
9. Trojan - 1pt - TROJAN GETS A POINT :D

Re: Mark Donohue Memorial Championship

Post by Ducktanian »

1975

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; BRM; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren)

With McLaren finally gone, the championship opens up to the lower teams. James Hunt was the best non-McLaren driver for the past 2 years, and he gets off to a great start with 2 wins in the first 2 races. Unfortunately for Hunt he then suffers 5 retirements in a row, but luckily for Hunt his opposition his so spread out that only Mark Donohue in the Penske manages to overhule his early lead [largely due to a win in Monaco where he is the last retirement, and thus gets the win] Hunt then wins 3 races on the trot to etch out a 5 point lead over Donohue going into Germany. Both drivers retire in Germany leaving Hunt with the 5 point lead with 3 races to go!
But then tragedy! Donohue dies during practice for the Austrian Grand Prix, effectively handing the title to Hunt, who virtually dominates the last 3 races anyway.
And thus the winners are:

JAMES HUNT AND HESKETH

Drivers Championship Results

1. James Hunt - 66pts
2. Mark Donohue - 40pts
3. Tom Pryce - 38pts
4. Mario Andretti - 26pts - Scores a win in a Parnelli! (They just barely got 6 points in real life)
5. Vittorio Brambilla - 21.5pts
6. John Watson - 18.5pts
7. Tony Brise - 13.5pts
8. Alan Jones - 11pts
9. Rolf Stommelen - 10pts
10. Jean-Pierre Jarier - 7.5pts
11. Wilson Fittipaldi - 7pts
=12 Gijs van Lennep - 6pts
=12 Harald Ertl - 6pts
=14 Lella Lombardi - 5pts - :D
=14 Graham Hill - 5pts
=14 Jacques Laffite - 5pts
17. Hans Joachim Stuck - 4pts
18. Brett Lunger - 3.5pts
19. Torsten Palm - 3pts
20. Arturo Merzario - 2pts (1 5th)
21. Chris Amon - 2pts (2 6ths)
22. Damien Magge - 1pt

Constructors Championship Results
1. Hesketh - 69pts [71]
2. Shadow - 45.5pts
3. Penske - 37pts
4. Hill - 30pts
5. March - 26.5pts - Disappointing performance really.
6. Parnelli - 26pts
7. Surtees - 15.5pts
8. Fittipaldi - 9pts
9. Ensign - 8pts
10. Williams - 7.5pts
11. Lola - 5pts

And thus, the championship is renamed in honour of Mark Donohue, and because the old title was kinda lame anyway.

1976

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; BRM; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren)

With James Hunt off to McLaren and Hesketh's performance duly dropping off a cliff, 1976 becomes a fight between the other upper midfield teams.
4 drivers in 4 teams win the opening 4 races with Tom Pryce's consistency gaining him the early title lead. Laffite wins 3 times in 5 races to gain a small lead over Pryce, but after Sweden, Laffite and Ligier have a terrible second half of the season and his title challenge tails off, giving Pryce the title lead back. However John Watson wins the next 3 races after Sweden to draw level with Tom Pryce. They trade wins to draw level again in time for Italy, before drawing for a 3rd time 2 races later. With 2 great wins from Ronnie Peterson, March have also entered a close constructors battle with Shadow and Penske. Unfortunately Shadow have a dismal last few races which hands the titles to...

Of all the teams that were eligible for 1977, Wolf was by far and away the most consistently fast. Even though both Jacques Laffite and Alan Jones won a race in real life, Jody Schekter not only won 3 races but a boat load of podiums, and thus Schekter was always going to win this one.

1978

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren)

Taking away the top teams [and McLaren], this season is for the most part pretty close, particularly between Scheckter (Wolf); Laffite (Ligier) & Fittipaldi (Fittipaldi)
Fittipaldi took 2 wins early on to take the early lead, but 3 wins for Laffite in Long Beach, Zolder and Jarama put the Frenchman into a comfortable lead. From that point onwards Laffite was such a consistent point scorer that neither Fittipaldi or Schekter could catch up.
The key statistic here was that whilst Laffite retired twice all season, most of his rivals retired 7 times (except Fittipaldi who retired 6 times) That reliability was basically what give Laffite the edge here!

1979

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren)

With Ferrari out the picture this season becomes a Williams vs Ligier affair, especially since this is also the first year which all driver's point count for the Constructor title!
This is very much a season of two halfs, with Ligier dominating the first half, then Williams dominating the second half, in addition to the brutal dropped scores rule for this year. After Monaco, the two Ligier driver's are tied on points, with a good lead over the Arrows and Williams teams. However, Depailler then has his hang-gliding accident which rules him out for the rest of the season, and with Jacky Ickx only scoring twice, this pretty much puts Ligier out of contention for the constructor's title.
This co-insides with a drop in performance for both Ligier and Arrows as Williams steal the show. Regazzoni and Jones overhaul Laffite's total but the dropped scores means that the top 3 drivers are separated by a single point!

I'm wondering if once Williams get eliminated after 1980, how much Renault's legendary poor reliability might hurt them, especially once they're the only top team left in 1982. Prost and Arnoux both only had a handful of finishes that year - who could that let in?

Lets get Williams out the way...

1980

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren)

Yep, its another "real life champion" year. Alan Jones won the championship in real life, and so he wins here too!
Arnoux (Renault) and Pironi (Ligier) start off the season well, but fade away in the second half of the season, with Reutemann (Williams) and Laffite (Ligier) having a strong end to the season to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively. It would be a close Ligier v Renault battle for second but Jean-Pierre Jabouille only manages to finish twice the entire year. Renault still manage to finish ahead of Arrows though.

Winners: ALAN JONES AND WILLIAMS

Drivers Championship Results
1. Alan Jones - 72pts [78]
2. Carlos Reutemann - 48pts [56]
3. Jacques Laffite - 41pts [43]
4. Rene Arnoux - 40pts
5. Didier Pironi - 38pts
6. Ricardo Patrese - 20pts
7. Keke Rosberg - 15pts
8. Emerson Fittipaldi - 13pts [1 2nd]
9. Jochen Mass - 13pts [1 3rd]
10. Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 10pts
11. Bruno Giacomelli - 7pts
12. Marc Surer - 6pts
13. Rupert Keegan - 3pts

Constructor's Championship Results
1. Williams - 137pts
2. Ligier - 81pts
3. Renault - 50pts
4. Arrows - 33pts
5. Fittipaldi - 28pts
6. Alfa Romeo - 7pts
7. ATS - 6pts

And thus Williams are excluded.

The coming years i'm gambling on Renault, before there will be an almost 10 year long Benetton dominance, then the era of Jordan will start.
I don't know what i want and i want it now!

1981

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

With the other big teams removed Renault and Ligier are the 2 big teams that remain.
Due to bad reliability from the 2 big teams early on, a number of drivers seem to be in contention in the early races with Ricardo Patrese in the Arrows leading the championship at first. However, after Laffite started winning in Belgium, only him and Prost recorded wins from that point onwards.
Even though Prost won every race he finished, only finishing 6 times was not enough as Laffite matched his number of wins (6) and scored points in 3 more races, to seal the title.
Due to Jabouille being terrible and Tambay failing to finish any race during his time at Ligier, Renault take the constructor's title.

Really looking forward to seeing 1982 - 87. Don't think the Benetton dominance will set in properly until 1988, they didn't finish many races in their first two seasons IIRC. Though Warwick and Capelli should have very strong seasons in 88.

Also for this championship, it's a shame Benetton only won the drivers championship in 1994, as that would have 1995 all the more interesting!

1982

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

With the competitiveness of Ligier declining around this time, Renault are the fastest team that aren't yet excluded.
Renault are plagued with a lot of retirements in 1982, but then again, so are everyone else
René Arnoux (Renault) is hurt quite a bit in this championship due to his retirements and ends up getting beaten not only by Cheever (Ligier) but also Marc Surer in the Arrows who originally finished 21st in the championship, but is SECOND here!
This is not the case for Alain Prost, who was easily quick enough to see off the challenge of Surer.

1983

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

Alain Prost narrowly lost the championship in real life, so here he cleans up with 7 wins to easily defend his title.
Marc Surer (Arrows) had a brilliant start to the season, and even won the first 2 races, but it was all downhill from there as Warwick (Toleman), de Cesaris (Alfa Romeo) and Cheever (Renault) all started to catch Surer's total towards the end of the season. But Surer's reliability compared to the chasers kept him ahead to successfully defend 2nd place for the 2nd time running, as once again Cheever has to settle with 3rd. (Yes this season has the same top 3 has the previous season)

Not a comment on the championship, but that photo of the 1983 Renault makes me think the other cars they did (with the exception of the initial 1977 teapot) simply were too white and not yellow enough. :)

1984

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

Renault are once again the team to beat but with Alain Prost being fired and Cheever off to Alfa Romeo, its a close duel between the new line-up of Warwick and Tambay.
Warwick wins 3 times early on to gain an early advantage over Tambay, but with wins in Monaco and Canada its Senna (Toleman) who quickly emerges as a surprise candidate, tying with Warwick for the championship lead. Warwick beats Tambay and Senna to a win in Britian, and beats Tambay again in Germany, to cement his lead after inheriting a win in Detroit (He was the last retirement). Senna is plagued by retirements and along with his suspension in Italy, he quickly drops out of contention despite winning the final race of the season. Tambay scores a win in Zandvoort but it isn't enough to catch up to Warwick.
Patrese enjoys a brilliant end to the season to finish a close 4th, which also seals 3rd for Alfa Romeo. Also Piercarlo Ghinzani gains a win for Osella in Dallas :P

WINNERS: DEREK WARWICK AND RENAULT

5. Andrea de Cesaris - 28pts
6. Theirry Boutsen - 26pts

1985

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

Renault start as the team to beat as it appears that the season will turn into another Warwick vs Tambay fight, but the season quickly descends into a 3-way fight between Renault, Ligier and Arrows.
Warwick's challenge quickly loses steam without any wins to back it up, so Boutsen in the Arrows becomes Tambay's main challenger. In the first half of the season, Tambay scores 4 wins compared to Boutsen's 2, but Boutsen is more reliable. Laffite wins in Germany and Britain to get close to the title lead, but then retires 5 times in a row.
Boutsen wins in Austria to draw level with Tambay, and than they draw again after Belgium. However the season turns into a anti-climax, with Boutsen gaining the title lead with a win in Brands Hatch before both Ligier and Renault boycott the South African Grand Prix. Arrows score a 1-2 in Kyalami to leapfrog Renault in the constructors, and guarantee Boutsen's victory in the championship. Boutsen's teammate Berger, actually has the best 2nd half of the year, but a disappointing first half means that he was never in contention for the title.

Benetton and Renault are different constructors, so Benetton gets excluded in 1995 and Renault in 2005.
In terms of modern Lotus, again it's a different constructor than Renault so that exclusion doesn't cover them. HOWEVER, they did call themselves " Lotus"

So yeah, I'm making them pay for the use of the Lotus name :P

Malaysian Lotus also count under the exclusion, despite the temptation to refer to them as "F1Malaysia" or some shite.
