I would be interested to know if this would actually make much difference though. (I imagine that with points going down to tenth, this might affect some minor placing and that they might actually have scored a few points here and there.)

Well as this is home of alternative championships, I may do some additional Lotus-friendly versions of 2010 onwards. ;)

Your championship, your rules. But it would be interesting, so thank you for entertaining the idea.

1986

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

With Renault out the picture and Arrows not having the pace to challenge the top teams, the first half of the season is all about Ligier v Benetton.
Benetton impress with 2 wins early on, but quickly Ligier begin to dominate proceedings with 7 wins in a row, with Laffite having the edge in reliability.
However, our hopes of a close teammate battle are dashed when Laffite broke both his legs at the start of the British Grand Prix and retired from racing.
Despite 2 wins by the Lola drivers, and 2 more by Berger (3 in total), Arnoux won 7 times in total to ease to the title.

1987

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

The first half of this season is very close due to poor reliability from many of the teams. As such the standings are a bit ridiculous, which is exemplified by the fact that if I ended this championship after Germany (half-way), Zakspeed would be constructor's champions, and PASCAL FABRE in the AGS would be the driver's champion.
After Hungary the season starts to normalise, and as such the second half of the season turns into a fight between the Benetton drivers were Eddie Cheever as the dark horse candidate. Just 2 points separate the three going to the final race, with Boutsen winning the race and the championship.

Go Zakspeed!

I think Benetton are going to win every title until 1995 now.

I reckon Jordan might win one or two of the titles in the '90s. But one between '91 and '95? Maybe. But not 1992, obvs.

Can't see Jordan winning until Benetton get eliminated.

1991 will probably be Piquet though it is probably Jordan's best chance as De Cesaris had lots of 7th and 8ths as well as his points finishes so they could be quite lucrative - they weren't much good in 1993 either, 1994 will obviously be Schumacher and because Benetton didn't win the 94 WCC, Schumacher will dominate 95 just like 94.

1988

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

This season was a lot closer than the standings suggest, with Benetton and Arrows dominating the season with the exception of a mid-late season charge by the March team.
Boutsen lead the Benetton charge with Nannini suffering with too many retirements to mount a real challenge, and instead of Cheever it was Warwick who took the early wins to take the early lead in the championship. Boutsen took the lead when Warwick failed the score in Detroit, but Warwick remained in contention for the rest of the year until he failed the finish the final three races which lead Boutsen and Benetton to sail ahead.

1989

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

With Boutsen off to Williams and Herbert/Pirro disappointing, Nannini takes the lead at Benetton and takes the early lead, with the 2 Arrows drivers of Cheever and Warwick not too far behind.
In the first half of the season Dallara were also in the hunt for the constructor's championship but this faded as the season progressed, leaving the fight between Arrows and Benetton. Cheever managed to get ahead in the championship twice but neither time was long lasting, as Nannini would immediately score a win to get back ahead. Just like last year Arrows' poor reliability towards the end of the season would cost them both championships.

1990

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

The Benetton Train starts to hit full-throttle in 1990 with Nelson Piquet joining the team after 2 lackluster years at Lotus. Benetton absolutely crush the opposition in a way not seen since McLaren in 1974, with only 3 wins going to a non-Benetton driver. Nannini, our champ from the previous year puts up a decent fight against his new teammate with a respectable 5 wins, and largely matches Piquet's pace. However, his poor performance in the first 2 races and comparatively poor reliability means that Piquet was always one step ahead.

Sadly, not long after Piquet seals the championship, Nannini is involved in a helicopter crash was effectively ends his career.

BONUS - 1990 without Benetton

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams; BENETTON)

Removing Benetton from the equation, the rest of the field was very closely matched during 1990.
Martini starts off well with 2 wins in the first 2 races but his poor reliability leaves him slowly sliding down the order. Eric Bernard gets ahead of Martini after Canada and then again after his first win of the season in Britain. Alex Caffi is Bernard's nearest challenger as Bernard etches out a far lead by the Hungarian Grand Prix, but he fails to score the last 5 races. Caffi is the first to take advantage and immediately overhauls Bernard's total with a win in Italy, and a 5th in Portugal. But dramatically its Larini who is the star of the last 5 races with 4 second places in a row to clinch the championship from under Caffi and Bernard's noses.

And so, without winning a single race all year, the winner is....

1991

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

Piquet starts his championship defence the right way, with 2 wins on the trot. With Piquet retiring from the next 2 races, a win for Moreno in Monaco keeps him in reach of his teammate, though Moreno's challenge quickly fades as he fails to win another race before being replaced. The surprise challenger comes in the middle of the season as de Cesaris for the new Jordan team wins 3 out of 4 races to come within 2 points of Piquet's lead, and Jordan only 8 points behind Benetton. However Benetton steal the show in the final races with Piquet being the only driver to finish the last 6 races and newcomer Michael Schumacher winning 2 races for Benetton to seal the championship and leave Jordan fuming.

1991 I thought was Jordan's (or anyone else's for that matter) best chance of beating Benetton before they get eliminated. There's now going to be 4 years of SCHUMIWINSLOL.

BONUS - 1991 without Benetton

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams; BENETTON)

With Benetton removed from the equation, the obvious front-runner was Jordan. Even so, the season was pretty close in the early stages before de Cesaris won 4 races out of 5 to gain the championship lead. De Cesaris' main challenger at this time was his own teammate, Bertrand Gachot. When Gachot was imprisoned prior to the Belgian Grand Prix, all de Cesaris had to do was to seal the title with a 5th win in Italy to keep the Dallara of Pirro at bay.

1992

Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Brabham; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

1990 was a pretty dominant season for Benetton, but 1992 goes one step beyond. Benetton win EVERY SINGLE RACE this year  . In ominous fashion, Schumacher wins the first 4 races in a row, but surprisingly, he doesn't have it all his own way. Martin Brundle - Schumacher's teammate - keeps logging in wins and even has a much better 2nd half of the season than Schumacher to take the title fight to the final race in the season. But ultimately Schumacher would beat Brundle in the final race to seal his first championship.

At least Benetton had three double-DNFs in 1993.

I remember once a long time ago, I did do an alternative 1992 championship which excluded Williams, McLaren and Benetton as apart from a couple of cameos by Alesi, all the podium positions were scored by those three teams, however having no Ferrari, Lotus or Tyrrell as well would made ridiculous Alboreto domination! :)

Also a few times Schumacher retired, Patrese was beaten by some non-excluded teams too. :)

This should be renamed after the late Guy Ligier and you should have added a bit in 1990 about helicopters crashing.

Guy Ligier never actually scored a point in this championship as he always drove for excluded teams.

Yeah, Nannini did suffer a helicopter crash in 1990 but Piquet had already won the championship by that point anyway. Perhaps I'll add a passing reference to it considering it effectively ended his career

Yep, Footwork, Ligier and Dallara are by some way the obvious top 3 teams here. Alboreto's only real competition was Erik Comas in the Ligier who had an impressive 4-race run from Canada to Germany including 2 wins! Unfortunately his win in Germany was his last finish that season leaving Alboreto to cruise away with the championship. JJ Lehto (Dallara) was the only other driver to win more than once.
Interestingly only Jordan and Fondmetal failed to score a win, though Stefano Modena came close with 2 second places in the last 2 races. A far cry from the glory days of de Cesaris.

So Brabham have bit the dust as constructors are dropping like flies :( But Sauber are here to save the day ;)

Just kidding, its another Schumacher masterclass.
Schumacher wins every race he finishes, whilst his new team-mate Patrese only manages 2. Nobody else manages to win more than once. The real interesting fight was for 2nd place between Patrese and the 2 Ligier drivers. Even Christian Fittipaldi in the Minardi is a challenger in the first half of the season, winning in Monaco of all places! Patrese pulls ahead with his win in Hungary and podium finishes in Spa and Monza, Brundle responds with a win in Australia but Patrese comes 3rd to seal his 2nd place in the championship by 2 points.

Also Badoer scores a point in Imola! :badoer:

Question for Dartanian: As this thread hasn't been updated since September, would you be OK for me to take over and do 1994 to date? I'm just really fascinated to see what happens once Benetton get excluded.

And also I take it Mercedes stay in until 2014 as there wasn't a constructors championship in the early 50s?

I'll leave you to it then. :)

I worked out up to 2008 for myself (including some years without Benetton/Renault before they were officially eliminated). but stopped there as I wasn't sure on the rules concerning Mercedes and Lotus (both Enstone Lotus and Caterham Lotus). There's one year I really liked the result of and was unexpected but won't spoil.

1994

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Lotus; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

Schumacher and Benetton continue their dominance with Schumacher winning the first 7 races in a row, effectively sealing both championships by mid-season. Mid-way through the season, the best of the rest competition is quite close between several drivers:

1994 Results (After 7 Races)

1st: Schumacher - 70pts
2nd: Barrichello - 16pts
3rd: Martini - 16pts
4th: Frentzen - 13pts
5th: Wendlinger - 10pts
6th: Panis - 10pts
7th: J J Lehto - 9pts

Barrichello takes the first non-Schumacher victory at Britain to take a solid advantage in the race for 2nd. Panis wins the next race in Germany and 2 more podiums to overtake Barrichello's total, but as soon as Panis takes 2nd, Barrichello wins 3 more races to seal his 2nd position. Barrichello even matches Schumacher's points total in the 2nd half of the season. Verstappen can only manage 5th and Lehto 11th.

1995

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams)

Lotus are the next big name to leave the sport, but it'll be back one day!
Meanwhile Benetton and Schumacher continue to dominate this championship, winning 11 out of 17 races.
Herbert, Schumacher's teammate remains close behind with several podiums and 3 wins of his own, but crucially he only finishes ahead of Schumacher once. Sauber, Jordan & Ligier continue to fight for best of the rest, each winning one race, with Frentzen one step ahead of the others due to a excellent string of 4 podiums mid-season.

1996

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams; Benetton)

With Benetton finally excluded, we will finally see our first non-Benetton winner since Rene Arnoux and Ligier in 1986. Ligier, alongside Jordan & Sauber were the best of the rest last year, but are now the main competitors this year. The season quickly descends into a 2-horse race between Panis (Ligier) and Barrichello (Jordan), with both racers trading wins and the championship lead throughout the season. They even tie after
Britain and again after Hungary. Both drivers retire in Belgium, where ROSSET WINS ;) keeping the scores level with 3 races to go. Barrichello comes 2nd in Italy to open a 6 point lead; Panis fails to respond effectively, only finishing 4th in Portugal, leaving a 3 point deficit going into the final race. Panis comes 3rd to finish ahead of Barrichello but its not good enough as Barrichello finishes right behind to win by 2 points. Brundle (Jordan) finishes 2 out of the last 3 races to seal 3rd place as well as the constructors title for Jordan.

Incidentally, I did work out 1993, 94 and 95 without Benetton (the latter of which, there's a genuine case of leaving them out due to them winning the 94 drivers championship even without the constructors).

1993 was Ligier domination, Brundle winning from Blundell and them comfortably winning the constructors (and Barbazza wins a race and Minardi finished 2nd overall!!).

1994 was Barrichello and Jordan, though Panis's consistency in finishes netted him 2nd (and Ligier 2nd), and Minardi won another race (Spain).

1995 was won by Frentzen and Sauber just scraped the constructors though I thought Wendlinger & Boullion would let them down. Ligier were 2nd but they too were let down by the Brundle/Suzuki car share. All the races were won by Sauber, Ligier and Jordan but Montermini and Diniz in the Forti both scored podiums. :)

1997

(Excluded Constructors: Ferrari; Tyrrell; McLaren; Williams; Benetton)

At the start of the season, it looked like Panis was going to run away with this one.
Unfortunately his crash in Canada puts paid to that plan and opens the door to the Jordan drivers and Herbert to surpass his points title.
It also opens the door for Jordan to take the constructors title since they actually have 2 decent drivers,
(Prost are stuck with Nakano all season whilst Sauber are switching drivers to find one that doesnt suck)

James1978 wrote: Ligier were 2nd but they too were let down by the Brundle/Suzuki car share.

Basically Mugen Honda forced this to happen again with Nakano instead of Suzuki. Good thing Prost have Peugeot engines next year right guys! ..... guys?

Ralf Schumacher has a great mid-season but poor reliability both early and late cripples his chances.
Herbert has the reliability but despite his EIGHT 2nd places he only wins once.
Fisichella ends up taking the championship due to a impressive string of 3 victores late season.

Oh and Damon Hill and Pedro Diniz both score wins in the Arrows. :D

1998 is an odd season. In real life Jordan don't start scoring until Britain though they end up out-scoring Benetton in the end. This means the Jordan start off slow but become unstoppable in the 2nd half. To the surprise of myself, Sauber win the first 4 races, with Jean Alesi wins 3 races in a row to become the man to beat. Jordan score a few podiums but the man challenger at this stage is the Stewart team with Rubens Barrichello, who scores 2 wins in Spain and Canada, but is too unreliable to mount a real challenge. Then Arrows somehow manage to get a 1-2 in Monaco . Alesi takes his 4th and final race in France to close the first half of the season.

(Drivers Standings - After 8 races)

Jean Alesi - 44pts
Johnny Herbert - 30pts
Rubens Barrichello - 28pts
Damon Hill - 17pts
Mika Salo - 14pts
[Ralf Schumacher only has 8 points at this stage]

As mentioned above, starting in Britain, Jordan suddenly become a force to be reckoned with. Ralf Schumacher finally gets his season started with 2 win races, but its Hill who takes full advantage and wins 5 of the last 6 races. But Jean Alesi keeps scoring podiums to keep his point advantage over Hill, so that he has a 7 point lead going into the final race. Ralf fails to score in the last 2 races, ruining his chances. Damon Hill takes the final win, but Alesi comes 2nd to successfully defend his title.
A Classic Season!

Hmm......when I worked it out myself Alesi won with 80 points (that was the interesting result I was referring to), though now I realise it is on a technicality. I awarded him 4 points for 3rd at Silverstone, behind Ralf Schumacher winning and Nakano in the Minardi finishing 2nd, and they were the only two eligible finishers in real life.

However Alesi only completed 53 laps, one short of being classified he scored a DNF, though the "winner", Ralf was actually lapped by his non-eligible brother who won in reality, and he only completed 59 laps which would therefore classify Alesi with his 53 laps (having done 90% of Ralf's laps), giving him the extra 4 points he needs....

The first time I calculated 1998 I did have Jean Alesi win, and I did wonder if I missed something the second time around. Thanks for spotting that!
1998 goes to the rightful champion, Jean Alesi :D

Heinz-Harald Frentzen was a genuine outsider for the title in real life, so here, HHF dominates the season with 11 wins out of the 16 races.
