Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2015 Spain

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Ericsson's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until May 15.

2. Pastor Maldonado - Great until bad luck hit him again

1. Pastor Maldonado - was absolutely flying before race control showed him the black and orange flag which ruined his race.
2. Fernando Alonso - Compare how Alonso ran to how Button fared. A brake failure may have ended his day, but for the first time this season he actually looked like a team leader.

1. Rosberg - delivered the performance we were needing from him to keep the championship interesting.
2. Bottas - drove his own race and kept out of trouble, paid off and got him ahead of Raikkonen.

1. Maldonado
Can this guy ever get a break?
2. Alonso
He had a good race, until the brakes said no

1. Maldonado's rear wing solution: Quite imaginative and surprisingly didn't break.
2. Valtteri Bottas: He is starting to become Ferrari's worst fear. He was clearly the best Williams driver this weekend.

1. Nico Rosberg - Is he genuinely quick? Or was poor Lewis' car sabotaged? I do hope the fanboys aren't returning
2. The good Reverend Dr. Maldonado - Not a bad performance until his retirement, considering he was missing a big piece of rear bodywork there.

The Telegraph did a basic summary of the race and criticised Maldonado's incident while dismissing his later overtakes, saying he had a poor race. Seems a bit of undue criticism to be honest, like an F1Fanatic article.

1)Pastor Maldonado: Spain has been always good for Pastor, and he was having a helluva race until mishaps out of his control put him out.

2)Jackmen: While there were hijinks during some pitstops, McLaren's and Lotus' jackmen deserve a praise for having cool heads in scorching moments.

Honorable mentions to Renault (all of them got home, surprisingly), Carlos Sainz Jr. (save the Spaniards honor) and Manor (more reliability than McLaren got both cars to the flag)

What are you doing reading a Tory rag for sports news anyway? Surely they're more interested in the latest water polo scores than Formula 1? Or maybe they get passes to report on the dresses the drivers' girlfriends are wearing?

No-one didn´t really have an outstanding performance but guess I´d give this one to:

1) Nico Rosberg: Finally he managed to beat Hamilton this year and it was pretty comfortable win too.

2) Lotus: Both drivers looked good there with Grosjean having a nice race despite crashing with his teammate and finished respectable 8th while Maldonado did show good pace before the crash and looked quite quick even after it.

1. N. Rosberg - Showing he's not just another number two driver
2. F. Alonso - Running pretty strongly until his retirement, could have been close to a point position actually.

Plenty of solid performances, but a bit hard to pick out anything really improbable, so I will settle for:

1. Maldonaldo - a bit untidy at times, but there's plenty of fight in Pastor and he deserves a change of luck.
2. Rosberg, I guess. Not that he shouldn't be able to win the occasional race, but I was starting to think that he wasn't going to step out of Lewis' shadow this season.

HM to the Jackmen, in particular the McLaren Jackman fronting up for Button's pit stop straight after the excitement of Alonso's near miss...

1. Pastor Maldonado - He was being the hero we all needed in the first stint, until it all went to shite for him again.

2. Slightly left-field choice, but I'm nominating Renault for getting all four cars home yesterday without any more expensive failures. :P

Rosberg for IIDOTR? This is more than enough proof that apparently only Rosberg and his family believe he can fight for the title until the end this year.

Anyway, my nominations go to Renault for a good showing after their low standards this year and to Carlos Sainz Jr for still managing some points after STR went wrong in the race day car setup.

1. Maldonado: Actually looked like he might finish in the points with that broken car, which sadly didn't hold up.

2. Jackmen: McLaren man avoiding being hit, and Lotus man taking his hit quite humorously.

Rosberg: Flawless weekend for him.

Grojean: Got that battered Lotus to 8th place.

Well... Webber first victory in 2010 was also in Spain. A grand prix in which he won from pole and by a larger margin than Rosberg. So Webber also dominated on occasion... ;)

Rosberg - 134
Maldonado - 124
McLaren and Lotus jackmen/Jackmen/the one with the ice-pack after Alonso's pit-stop - 34
Bottas - 24
Sainz Jr. - 24
Maldonado's rear wing solution - 20
Alonso - 18
Renault - 16
Lotus - 12
Grosjean - 10
Maldonado's DRS - 10
Kimi - 10
Graham Rahal - 6

Okay, Maldonado got 30 extra points because of his rear wing/DRS, and with them, he would get the IIDOTR.
Now what, should I keep the results as is?

Well Maldonado having another decent race is different to the miracle that his car lasted so long. The problem with his race was the damaged rear wing, so I don't think this really made Maldonado's race excellent in itself  soooooooo nah I'd keep them separate.
