2018 Formula 5000 Season - Round 8 complete

Post by MinardiFan95 »

Image
After a reasonably successful first season, F5000 returns in 2018 with new race formats, new tracks and a new manufacturer in Volvo.

2018 F5000 Calendar:
Test 1: Sydney Motorsport Park - February 4
Test 2: Queensland Raceway - February 18
Round 1: Adelaide - March 2-4 (Supporting F1RWRS)
Round 2: Bathurst - March 9-11 (Supporting F1RWRS)
Round 3: Albert Park - March 24-25 (Supporting AR3.5)
Round 4: Symmons Plains - April 7-8
Round 5: Barbagallo - April 21-22
Round 6: Teretonga - May 19-20
Round 7: Highlands Motorsport Park - June 2-3
Round 8: Pukekohe - June 16-17
Round 9: Hamilton - June 30 - July 1
Round 10: Surfers Paradise - August 2-4 (Supporting Formula 1)
Round 11: Sydney Motorsport Park - August 25-26

Race Formats
For the 2018 season, a variety of race formats have been introduced to the series. These are as follows:
  • One Race: 60 minute 'enduro' race
  • Two Race: 20 minute sprint race plus 40 minute feature
  • Three Race: 3 20 minute sprints, with reverse grid for final race based on RNG.

The grid limit for each race is 32 cars - for the first main race of the weekend this means there will be 26 full-time cars and 6 part-time cars on the grid.

Each race weekend will also have a 15 minute race for part-time cars, to determine which part time drivers make the grid for the main event. Drivers who miss out on the qualifying spots will be reserves for the following races in case a car is beyond repair and cannot make the next race.

Manufacturers
Ford
Factory Team: Ford Performance Racing (Salamander)
Engine Supply conditions:
  • Team must have one driver from Oceania, preferably 2 (foreign drivers reviewed on case by case basis)

  • Team must be based in Australia or New Zealand
  • There must be at least one Australian or New Zealander driver on the team

1 non-factory full-time team available

Nissan
Factory Team: Voeckler NISMO (Biscione)
Engine Supply conditions:
  • First driver must have previous canon experience, foreign lead drivers must have experience in F1, F1RWRS, F1RICS, F2RWRS or AR 3.5.
  • Canon rookie second drivers must be from the Oceania region.
  • All lineups must have at least one Oceania or Japanese nationality driver.

2 non-factory full-time teams available

1 non-factory full-time team available

Please Note: Allocation of engines will be determined by an RNG based off the supply criteria. If an application meets none of the criteria specified by the manufacturer, that team will not be included in the RNG. The first round of RNG's will be run around one week after this thread is posted.

Part-Time Teams
Part time teams can:
  • Run any engine of their choice, without having to meet the supply criteria for full time teams
  • Only enter races in one region (Australia, New Zealand or Asia)
  • Only be a single car team

FPR is interested in running the following drivers for our young driver car: Simon Bourne, Matt Grove, and Florence Briggs, though we will review all offers of interest from up-and-coming young Oceanian drivers. There are many benefits to joining FPR - we enter 2018 having finished 2nd in the Team's Championship only on countback, the works team of the reigning Manufacturer's Champions, both our drivers were title contenders, one of whom has gone on to bigger and better things in Europe. The other, Dean O'Lauchlan, is a seasoned campaigner who will offer priceless insight, the kind only gained from years of hard-won experience both in Australia and abroad... if he resigns for us, that is.

The RNG's for engine allocation will not be run this week as planned due to not enough entries. If there are no more entries by next week, all of the current applicants will get their first choice of engine, plus the final two spots (Mercedes and Volvo) will be opened up on a first-in first-served basis.
This is a cool spot.

What will be the manufacturer's points system? For me it's important, because I anticipate there will be better drivers for privateer Nissan entries than the USD lineup, who will not contribute anything towards our championship total.

Best 4 full-time cars from each manufacturer in a round is the plan at the moment - having part timers be able to score opens up the door for exploiting the system.

That's ok then, I am happy with the Super Dragon lineup, it should be good enough to rake in points. But still, it would be nice if USD would hire some better drivers an increase our chances of success in this particular championship...

Since there has been no action in this thread regarding team signups, most teams will get their first choice of engine supplier as the RNG will not need to be run. The only exception to this are Holden teams, as there are 4 teams going for engines. As Leketus Motorsport are only going to run 1 car, there will be an RNG to determine whether they get the single engine and if that is successful, which team will have to lose one of their cars for it.

The contracts for Volvo and Mercedes-Benz remain up for grabs, as no team has gone for first preference with them.
This is a cool spot.

Carrera Granada famously known as Mediterranean Motorsport in Europe, is looking to try and enter a Merc to run Part-Time during the summer, at least between 2-4 races and between April-August. This bid could be a backup for Ernesto Raya who is currently looking for a ride during the mid-year after closing on a deal to race for Reject SuperTruck Series starting Winter 2017 and ending in Spring 2018. Now looking for a Mid-year Ride, Carrera Granada will hopefully be able to try and recruit Raya for a part-Time ride if the requirements are met. The team are currently not showing an interest to any other driver

Time for the one and so far only RNG of the entry process so far:

Holden Engine Supply
3 two car teams and a lone single car team applied for the Holden engine supply.
1-50 - Bryan Taylor Racing, Peak Motorsport and Motorsport Projects each get two engines
51-100 - Leketus Motorsport get an engine, leaving one of the other teams to scale back to a single car.

Result: 44: Holden were on the fence with their decision, however they eventually settled on supplying all of the two car teams after considering Leketus' performance as a part-time team in 2017.
This is a cool spot.

If your running Bourne for the full season, I'm already warning you that the round 5 of F5000 clashes with first round of GBRC.

During the 2013 season, the AI system RRB-GP/NH, developed in a cooperation by Russian Robotics and the Freie Universität Berlin, was sold to CR Motorsport before series management rejected the use of the system.

This project had laid low, but rumours of a redevelopment were surfacing occasionally. Today, it was confirmed that an improved system, developed in cooperation with former F1 race winner Vitaly Petrov and thusly named RRB-GP/VP, will be used in Formula 5000 by Edgell Performance Racing.

"This is a bold step in a new direction for motorsport and automobile development," commented a Edgell Performance Racing spokesperson, "We believe entering the system is going to help make a step forward in developing automated systems for road cars."

Engine 1st Preference: Ford
Engine 2nd Preference: Mercedes-Benz
Driver #1: RRB-GP/VP (RUS, #8)
Team status: Part-time
Rounds Entered: All New Zealand Rounds

Ford are very intrigued by the RRB-GP/VP and are certainly willing to supply engines to Edgell Performance Racing as a result.

Auto Fiction wrote:Two guest cars to join F5000 series at each round.
Following the success of programs such as Infiniti All Stars and Globex Scorpio Juniors in the FIA IPC series, the organisers of the F5000 series have added two guest cars to enter as part-time teams. One of these cars is going to be branded under the "Chance of a Lifetime" banner, which was last seen in the early 2000's in V8 Supercars support series and will be used to showcase up and coming local talent at each race. The other car will be available for any drivers from other racing series to get a taste of the action that F5000 provides.
This is a cool spot.
