The FIA European Championship

Post by Bobby Doorknobs »

We all know or have at least heard about the pre-war European Championship - drivers fighting in the most important Grand Prix events on the European continent for the AIACR's (the FIA's original name) most prestigious title. I am using this same line of thinking here. Only the results of European races will count towards this alternate championship. I will be working my way backwards with this because F1 was almost exclusively European in its early years and so the potential for change is minimal. The 2015 season finished two weeks ago in Sochi, so that's where we'll start.

2015

And our first champion looks to be the same for this year, but it is at least a little bit closer, with Rosberg winning the first three rounds and bad luck played more of a role in his losing the title this year than him simply being slower than Hamilton. In fact, only counting the European rounds seems to make most of the grid look good - Vettel looked a slightly more realistic championship contender, Red Bull and Williams had a decent scrap for third place, Ericsson had a good run of points finishes, McLaren's performance was slightly less embarrassing (they beat Sauber) and Manor got both cars running from the start. Though it must be said that this doesn't do Carlos Sainz many favours, Verstappen outscoring him 21-3. Räikkönen and Ricciardo were also outscored by Pérez and we didn't get to see Alex Rossi.

Drivers' Championship

1. Lewis Hamilton - 159 pts.

I had been toying with the idea of doing something similar when I had a bit of spare time, but... I would probably have never got around to it, so well done. I will be following this one with interest!

And we see our first change...

2014

An exciting title showdown in Sochi, as Hamilton and Rosberg were level on 141 points, while Ricciardo was an outside contender on 117. Rosberg spent most of the race fighting back from last place after losing the car in turn 2. What he realistically needed was for Hamilton to retire, and given Mercedes' impeccable reliability, it didn't look likely.

Drivers' Championship

1. Lewis Hamilton - 166 pts.
2. Nico Rosberg - 159 pts.
3. Daniel Ricciardo - 123 pts.
4. Valtteri Bottas - 107 pts.
5. Fernando Alonso - 80 pts.
6. Sebastian Vettel - 62 pts.
7. Jenson Button - 49 pts.
8. Felipe Massa - 43 pts.
9. Kimi Räikkönen - 31 pts.
10. Kevin Magnussen - 26 pts.
11. Nico Hülkenberg - 24 pts.
12. Sergio Pérez - 22 pts.
13. Romain Grosjean - 8 pts.
14. Daniil Kvyat - 4 pts.
15. Jean-Éric Vergne - 3 pts.
16. Jules Bianchi - 2 pts.
17. Adrian Sutil - 0 pts.
18. Marcus Ericsson - 0 pts.
19. Pastor Maldonado - 0 pts.
20. Kamui Kobayashi - 0 pts.
21. Esteban Gutiérrez - 0 pts.
22. Max Chilton - 0 pts.
NC. André Lotterer - 0 pts.

Constructors' Championship

1. Mercedes - 325 pts.
2. Red Bull-Renault - 185 pts.
3. Williams-Mercedes - 150 pts.
4. Ferrari - 111 pts.
5. McLaren-Mercedes - 75 pts.
6. Force India-Mercedes - 46 pts.
7. Lotus-Renault - 8 pts.
8. Toro Rosso-Renault - 6 pts.
9. Marussia-Ferrari - 2 pts.
10. Sauber-Ferrari - 0 pts.
11. Caterham-Renault - 0 pts.

2013

Vettel didn't have his record-breaking streak of race wins, but his two dominant displays in Belgium and Italy were enough to ensure that 2013 remains as it was in reality. There was more of a fight for the title this time, with Rosberg being a strong contender early on, and there were only sixteen points separating Vettel from runner-up Alonso in the end.

Drivers' Championship

1. Sebastian Vettel - 120 pts.
2. Fernando Alonso - 104 pts.
3. Mark Webber - 86 pts.
4. Nico Rosberg - 80 pts.
5. Lewis Hamilton - 76 pts.
6. Kimi Räikkönen - 65 pts.
7. Felipe Massa - 45 pts.
8. Jenson Button - 35 pts.
9. Romain Grosjean - 31 pts.
10. Adrian Sutil - 18 pts.
11. Nico Hülkenberg - 12 pts.
12. Daniel Ricciardo - 12 pts.
13. Paul di Resta - 10 pts.
14. Sergio Pérez - 8 pts.
15. Jean-Éric Vergne - 4 pts.
16. Pastor Maldonado - 1 pt.

18. Valtteri Bottas - 0 pts.
19. Giedo van der Garde - 0 pts.
20. Max Chilton - 0 pts.
21. Charles Pic - 0 pts.
22. Jules Bianchi - 0 pts.

Constructors' Championship

1. Red Bull-Renault - 206 pts.
2. Mercedes - 156 pts.

8. Sauber-Ferrari - 12 pts.
9. Williams-Renault - 1 pt.
10. Caterham-Renault - 0 pts.
11. Marussia-Cosworth - 0 pts.

2012

Now, things get interesting. Alonso was the only truly consistent front-runner, as Maldonado's victory in the opening round in Spain proved a false dawn for Williams, it being the only points finish of the year for the Venezuelan. Going into the final round at Monza Raikkonen was the only one with a mathematical chance of beating Alonso, but the Spaniard won the title. Webber also beat Vettel and Schumacher beat Rosberg in his final season.

Would the 2014 season have changed much if the final European round had been double-points?

Magnussen would have beaten Raikkonen, but apart from that, everything remains the same. Anyway...

2011

Yeah, VETTELWINSLOL. What else is there to say? Well, it was a complete disaster for Renault, who were beaten on countback by Toro Rosso and Hamilton was third in the championship, despite this being the year he went a bit mad while Button was having possibly the best season of his career. Vettel's closest competition came not from Button, but Alonso, who was rewarded with the runner-up spot. And in case anyone's wondering, I did not count Istanbul, as the track is on the Asian side of the city.

Drivers' Championship

1. Sebastian Vettel - 173 pts.
2. Fernando Alonso - 131 pts.
3. Lewis Hamilton - 99 pts.
4. Mark Webber - 97 pts.

10. Lotus-Renault - 0 pts.
11. Virgin-Cosworth - 0 pts.
12. HRT-Cosworth - 0 pts.

2010

Webber wins the title! And quite easily at that, sealing the title with a round to spare at Spa. Elsewhere, Massa beat Button and was not far off Hamilton, while Barrichello beat his former Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher in an inferior car.

When I saw this earlier, I thought it seemed slightly familiar. I had to go back to 2010 to find what I was looking for: this! Someone has already done the rest of the work for you! This is now just an update of that thread...

Although 2010 did work out rather differently? (Does Turkey account for that difference?)

Ah, I was having fun with this. Still, I suppose this thread has served some purpose by showing the last five seasons. And yes, the final 2010 results were different due to Turkey being left out of my version of the championship. I finished 2009 earlier and I'm sure somebody around here will be happy to know that Barrichello won!

Sorry for ruining your fun. I suppose you could still calculate all the years Turkey featured, and remove those results. It does seem to change the results somewhat! And you hadn't joined the forums by 2010, so you wouldn't have known that somebody had already attempted this and had failed to keep it updated.
