Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2015 USA

Posted: 25 Oct 2015, 20:55
by Shizuka
based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Ericsson's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until October 30

1) Rossi: Despite running into the back of Stevens in the beginning he otherwise kept it clean, especially when others decided to play pinball or drive like idiots. If only Alonso's engine and Ricciardo's car decided to pack up...

2) Sainz: Started dead last, had a penalty, and still managed to finish in the points. Some pretty crazy moves as well, so props to him.

Honorable Mentions:
- Verstappen: Kid isn't afraid of anything, that's for sure.
- Perez: A good, strong drive into the top 5; some might call it luck, but with everyone else either crashing or retiring ahead of him, he kept it cool and delivered

1. The race itself - One of the best races I've had the pleasure of seeing live.
2. Alexander Rossi - Just a little bit more attrition and I would've been very pleased.

1. McLaren-Honda, for not being blown past in a straight line
2. Alex Rossi, for doing his level best to be the hero we needed.

1. McLaren: Great race by their standards, even though Alonso's car let him down.
2. (shared, 3 points for each): Max Verstappen: Another surprise result from him. Not only the best rookie of the season but a standout among all drivers.
Alexander Rossi: If only...

I'm going to follow the crowd here and say 1. The race, and 2. Rossi as well.

OH EDIT: plus honourable mention to the nearly underage champagne sprayer, Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen - once again getting very close to scoring his first podium, and STR's first since 2008.
Alexander Rossi - had a legitimate shot at scoring points in this race

1. Carlos Sainz - Started last and was right behind Verstappen within five laps. Got loads of shite thrown at him, yet still finished seventh. Also, screw Verstappen.
2. Alex Rossi - P12, made it to the end when many others didn't

1. Mclaren- genuinely looked competitive run 5th and 6th, Button was at one point the fastest car on the track shame a problem robbed them of a double points finish

2 The Race - By far the best race of the season so far

1) The race: Not only for actually going ahead in the end, but being probably the most exciting race this season.

2) Alexander Rossi: Held it when a lot of the drivers around him went off. Excellent result for a driver who hasn't spent long in a Formula One car.

Vettel - He surprised me with a pretty tenacious drive.

1. Max Verstappen - Good tactic which could have given even better result without Hulkenberg VSC and Kvyat SC.

2. Pastor Maldonado - A race which was all-in-all quite chaotic, but not for him this time. Clean race and good points.

1. The race.*
2. Plenty of candidates here but I've had nothing nice to say about McLaren all year so it's them.
*Bernie's had some bonkers ideas over the years but sprinklers defo would have worked!

1. The race itself By far the best race this year and one that will go down as a classic.

2. Alexander Rossi Oh what could have been. And he finished on the lead lap in a year-old car. BRAVO

Very Close Nominations

Max Verstappen Max V (as I call him on twitter) drove like an 18-year veteran. He stayed out of trouble and was even close to getting a podium. (Someone on twitter asked Circuit Assen and Zandvoort if it's ready to become F1 suitable in the next couple years hehe)

Carlos Sainz Starting 20th after crashing during qualifying and finished 7th. 'Nuff said.

1) Has to be the race itself, well worth staying up to watch that one.

2) Max Verstappen 4th for a rookie with midfield car is always impressive even if he did get a bit of help thanks to so many drivers not finishing the race.

Honorable Mentions:
McLaren Looked good for a change even if Alonso again encountered technical problems at the end.
Sergio Perez: Is beating Hulkenberg quite handily this year on points and had another solid race were he kept himself out from trouble which is more than what he´s teammate managed to do.

1. Max Verstappen - That's for the haters. By the way, he's now overtaken two "great drivers deserving a top team".
2. Carlos Sainz - This is probably the best driver pairing Toro Rosso has ever had and could ever have.

As much as I love Manor, Rossi only got where he got to because others crashed out. And being able to unlap himself twice from the safety car certainly helped.

I thought Nasr drove well as did all four Red Ball drivers.

1. Rossi: Agonizingly close to scoring points on his home turf. Aside from running into the back of Stevens, he was pretty much flawless the whole race.

2. Verstappen: Almost a podium for Torro Rosso.

Honorable Mentions:

The Race Itself: Aside from the predictable top three, it was by far the best race of the season so far.

Sainz Jr.: 20th to 7th ain't half bad.

McLaren: Had a solid run for once.

Vettel: Started 13th, and almost kept his championship hopes alive to the very end.

1 - Max Verstappen. We Dutchies can really be chauvinistic about this young one.
2 - The teams' Twitter accounts for keeping us entertained during saturday qualifying. I didn't expect them to be that funny :D

1. Max Verstappen - Kids have no fear. Great, great drive. He's got to be in the top 3 drivers of the year.

2. McLaren Honda - Can't remember the last time McLaren were genuine midfield (Oh how sad it is to say). Battled well, deserved much more IMO.

Honourable mentions:

The race! Quality stuff.

Alexander Rossi - Ok, he finished 12th purely because everyone behind him either crashed or retired. But still, he kpet it on the island whilst more experienced drivers didn't.
