The 2015 GP Rejects Forum Awards

Post by Rob Dylan »

Sorry if this is just one of a billion threads being created in the off-season (merge this with another thread if it's more appropriate), but I believe it is time to come up with nominations for the various 2015 Formula OneTM Season awards! My nominations are:

- Driver of the Year Award = No nomination
- Team of the Year Award = Mercedes
- Race of the Year Award = 2015 United States Grand Prix
- Rookie of the Year Award = Felipe Nasr
- Most Improved Driver of the Year Award = Sergio Perez

- Finish of the Year = The End of the 2015 United States Grand Prix
- Most Anonymous Driver of the Year = Will Stevens
- Crasher of the Year = Max Verstappen
- The Deadbeat Teammate of the Year Award = Kimi Raikkonen

Those are pretty much all the traditional awards out of the way. Here's a few of my own personal ones:
- The “Lucky B*stard of the Year” Award = Kimi Raikkonen
- The “Cursed By Gypsies” Award = Fernando Alonso
- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Driver Award = Marcus Ericsson

- Best Qualifying Lap of the Year Award = Toro Rosso 5th (Sainz) and 6th (Verstappen) at the 2015 Spanish Grand Prix
- Best racing lap of the year = Lap 1 of the 2015 British Grand Prix
- Most unnecessary driver of the year = Marcus Ericsson
- The Lucky Bastard To Avoid Any Rejectful Awards Award = Daniil Kvyat

Murray Walker at the 1997 Austrian Grand Prix wrote:The other [Stewart] driver, who nobody's been paying attention to, because he's disappointing, is Jan Magnussen.

- Driver of the Year Award = Sebastian Vettel; probably would go to Alonso if he stayed at Ferrari, but hey, it's his own damn fault
- Team of the Year Award = Mercedes; looked even more unstoppable than a previous dominant year, which you don't see much of in history
- Race of the Year Award = 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix; can't even think of anything outside of F1 that would beat it
- Rookie of the Year Award = Max Verstappen
- Most Improved Driver of the Year Award = Pérez, I guess
- Reject of the Year = we have a thread for that
- Finish of the Year = er... idk, nothing comes up immediately
- Most Anonymous Driver of the Year = Marcus Ericsson
- Crasher of the Year = No one was crazy like that this year, which is good
- The Deadbeat Teammate of the Year Award = Kimi Räikkönen

- The “Lucky Bastard of the Year” Award = I don't think anyone had outrageously good luck. Maybe Verstappen? He had a couple crazy results that were more down to chaos.
- The “Cursed By Gypsies” Award = Carlos Sainz
- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Driver Award = Jolyon Palmer
- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Team Award = Red Bull
- The “Best of the Rest” Driver award = Outside the top 5 teams I say Grosjean
- The “Best of the Rest” Team award = I thought of giving the main teams' award to Williams or Force India
- Best Qualifying Lap of the Year Award = Pérez at Abu Dhabi, though I could probably find something better if I had a decent memory for that sort of thing. Ricciardo's final sector at Singapore also deserves mention
- Best racing lap of the year = Season too good to make a choice
- Most unnecessary driver of the year = Roberto Merhi, apparently
- The Lucky Bastard To Avoid Any Rejectful Awards Award = Well, not anymore
- Most missed driver of the year = Jules Bianchi, obviously

- Driver of the Year Award = Sebastian Vettel for being the only non Mercedes winner and also for managing to become likable again.
- Team of the Year Award = Mercedes Making a mockery of everyone else again.
- Race of the Year Award = Hungarian Grand Prix. Lots of attrition (by current standards) and plenty of surprise turns.
- Rookie of the Year Award = Max Verstappen who would guess he'd only had a year of car racing before this season and that he's only just 18?
- Most Improved Driver of the Year Award = Sergio Perez
- Reject of the Year = McLaren-Honda
- Finish of the Year = United States Grand Prix
- Most Anonymous Driver of the Year = Roberto Merhi In fact Manor in general now that they are the only 2010 team left.
- Crasher of the Year = Nico Hulkenburg Developed quite the habit of throwing away good finishes this season.
- The Deadbeat Teammate of the Year Award = Kimi wasn't nearly as much of a deadbeat as last season so doesn't seem fair to nominate him. Everyone else that scored far less than their teammates (Sainz, Maldonado, Ericsson) was mainly down to poor luck. I'm going with Roberto Merhi because I was surprised at how consistently he was beaten by Stevens.

Those are pretty much all the traditional awards out of the way. Here's a few of my own personal ones:
- The “Lucky B*stard of the Year” Award = Lewis Hamilton His only DNF came in the one race Mercedes weren't the fastest team and his other screw up (Hungary) ended up offset by Rosberg later screwing up even worse. This definately contributed to the championship battle being far less close than in ought to have been.
- The “Cursed By Gypsies” Award = Carlos Sainz Jr. 7 DNFs, every one of them mechanical related.
- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Driver Award = Esteban Gutierez Just why are Haas/Ferrari bothering with him?
- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Team Award = McLaren How have Alonso and Button not fled the team yet?
- The “Best of the Rest” Driver award = Depends where 'the rest' begins. If this is everyone bar Mercedes then Sebastian Vettel
- The “Best of the Rest” Team award = Force India They finally made the top five.
- Best Qualifying Lap of the Year Award = Toro Rosso in Spain
- Best racing lap of the year = Lap 1 of the British Grand Prix.
- Most unnecessary driver of the year = Both of Manor's starting drivers seem to have been picked at random.
- The Lucky Bastard To Avoid Any Rejectful Awards Award = Pastor Maldonado Because honestly, you'd expect him to earn at least one.
- Most missed driver of the year = Jules Bianchi

So, let's see who's in line for a bit of award action, right?

- Driver of the Year Award = Bob Pillsworth, the trucker from Romford who had to haul 40 tons' worth of Honda engine equipment to every race on the calendar, for as much reward as he'd get in a gulag.
- Team of the Year Award = The marshals, at every circuit - bar one
- Race of the Year Award = Les Vingt-Quatre Heures Du Mans
- Rookie of the Year Award = Chuck Sherman, who is still a rookie; any assertion that he isn't is all lies
- Most Improved Driver of the Year Award = Max Verstappen, who started the year unable to legally drive on the roads of the Netherlands...
- Reject of the Year = David Coulthard's trousers
- Finish of the Year = whenever Eddie Jordan stopped talking
- Most Anonymous Driver of the Year = Roberta Mary - I mean, come on, not even dr-baker noticed we had our first woman in a Grand Prix since Giovanna Amati...
- Crasher of the Year = Brad Roberts, frontman of the Crash Test Dummies. I bet you'd all forgotten about themmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm.
- The Deadbeat Teammate of the Year Award = Kevin Magnussen, I mean, what was he doing waiting for McLaren to throw him out when he could have gone to Japan and challenged Alex Yoong in that GT series that I can't remember the name of...

- The “Lucky Bastard of the Year” Award = David "Cinzano Bianco" Lister, with a bit of help from Dr. Hildegarde Landström
- The “Cursed By Gypsies” Award = Homer Simpson, until he can find a leprechaun that will do his bidding...
- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Driver Award = whoever reversed that Sainsbury's delivery van into the side of my house
- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Team Award = the Sky presenting team, if criticism on this forum is anything to go by
- The “Best of the Rest” Driver award = Michael Winner. Calm down, dear, I'm really a very good driver, despite being dead.
- The “Best of the Rest” Team award = RTL, at least when they're not going for fünfzehn Minuten WERBUNG MIT KROMBACHER ALKOHOLFREI DAS IST NICHT GUT ICH WILL FORMEL EINS RENNSPORT FERNSEHEN DUMMKOPF
- Best Qualifying Lap of the Year Award = Roberto Moreno's lap to get the Andrea Moda onto the grid at Monaco, which I watched on YouTube yesterday
- Best racing lap of the year = Bernd Mayländer leading the Malaysian Grand Prix
- Most unnecessary driver of the year = Carmen Jordá - oh, wait, that's not a joke, is it
- The Lucky Bastard To Avoid Any Rejectful Awards Award = Keith Collantine
- Most missed driver of the year = I'm not even going to bother trying to crack a joke about this one, you all know who it is...
James Allen, on his favourite F1 engine of all time:

I dont really watch MotoGP either and thus I don't have an opinion who was right and who wasn't - but regardless of blame, the way that little argy-bargy escalated into a full scale war on all fronts mentioned, was easily worse than Suzuka 89-90, Adelaide 94, Jerez 97, Hungary 07 and Malaysia 13 put together. Just try reading youtube comments on some video of the events or have a look at motobike fan forums. I dare you.

Well he did only run 5 races, but the way he beat Stevens wins my vote.

So what would Verstappen/Sainz/Nasr had to have done to earn ROTY from you?

That's a legitimate question. I was torn with young Max, as he really was a breath of fresh air. He made some rookie mistakes but who didnt?

My only other desiding factor was seat time. Rossi had virtually none, so to beat his teammate, who was the unquestioned #1 was impressive, at least to me.

But you'll hear no arguments from me if Max wins.

Well, I might as well chip in with my thoughts too.

- Driver of the Year Award = Sebastian Vettel - it is true that he is perhaps a little fortunate to have moved to Ferrari at a time when they are definitely on the up and can therefore reap the rewards, but he seems to have consistently extracted about as much of the performance of the car that he could have. Asides from a few odd races, his performance has been very consistent and seems to have revitalised him somewhat after something of a souring of relations towards the end of his stay at Red Bull.

- Team of the Year Award = Mercedes - what else can you say about the team? Apart from their strange lack of pace in Singapore, they've usually been blisteringly quick this year and, if anything, seem to have stretched their advantage this year in some races.

- Race of the Year Award = 2015 United States Grand Prix - it was a race that swung around wildly, and in the end it made for a rather fitting crescendo for Hamilton to win the title in that race.

- Rookie of the Year Award = Verstappen and Sainz Jr. - whilst it is Verstappen that has captured the headlines given his remarkable maturity for somebody of his age, at the same time Sainz Jr has also put in some performances that, although not capturing the same headlines, were quite respectable in their own right. Having been fairly evenly matched over the season, both drivers look like they could have very promising careers ahead of them.

- Most Improved Driver of the Year Award = Sergio Perez - although his reputation took a bit of a battering in 2014 after his spell at McLaren and being drubbed by Hulkenberg, Perez has turned that around with a very mature performance and, in the process, seems to have effectively killed off most of Hulkenberg's hopes for moving to a major team after being beaten by Perez.

- Reject of the Year = McLaren-Honda - the team has hit their lowest ranking in the WCC in 35 years and, if you were to adjust their historical results to the modern points system, I believe that it would be their lowest points haul since 1967. As others have said, at the moment McLaren seem to be following a dangerously similar performance trend to Williams, and increasingly you have to wonder whether figures like Ron Dennis - having previously saved the team - are increasingly the cause of, rather than the solution to, the ailments of the team.

- Finish of the Year = The End of the 2015 United States Grand Prix

- Most Anonymous Driver of the Year = Nico Hülkenberg - this might be a bit controversial but, given how highly he has been lauded in the past, there weren't any races this season where his performances really stood out.
Figures like Stevens or Merhi might not be expected to stand out anyway given that the director rarely looks for them but, for a man who has sought to move into a major team, his performances, when compared to his reputation, felt a little lacklustre. It's perhaps a bit damning that even one of his more vocal supporters in the press, Martin Brundle, seemed rather muted about his support for him this year and his calls for Hulkenberg to be given a seat at a top team were fewer and further between this season, especially in the latter part when he tended to praise Perez more.

- Crasher of the Year = Kimi Raikkonen - for a driver of his experience, he was involved in some very uncharacteristic mistakes that looked like pure driver error (with Alonso in Austria and twice with Bottas in Russia and Mexico).
Yes, figures like Verstappen might have been involved in more spectacular clashes, but that kind of goes with the territory given that midfield drivers are, statistically, more likely to be involved in clashes given that they are more often than not having to fight with other cars. Given the competitiveness of his car and his relative experience, Kimi shouldn't have been in a position to clash with those other cars in the first place, which makes his performance all the more disappointing.

- The Deadbeat Teammate of the Year Award = Kimi Raikkonen - statistically, he had one of the weakest performances relative to a team mate in the entire field.

- The “Lucky B*stard of the Year” Award = In a slightly perverse way, I would say Lotus - without the split between Renault and Red Bull and the subsequent decision by Renault to purchase them, I do not see how a team with such cashflow issues could have survived into 2016. Even the judge presiding over the decision of whether or not to declare the team bankrupt stated that they were lucky that Renault stepped in to save them.

- The “Cursed By Gypsies” Award = Toro Rosso and Lotus - the drivers for both teams had fairly abysmal reliability records.

- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Driver Award = Kimi Raikkonen - given the comments Arrivabene made about Kimi earlier this year and how easily Vettel dominated him, Kimi is extremely lucky to still have a contract for 2016.

- The “How Have They Got a Contract For Next Year?” Team Award = Red Bull-Renault - considering the mess they got themselves into, Red Bull are perhaps lucky that they were able to save some face by returning to Renault.

- The “Best of the Rest” Driver award = Sergio Perez - as the highest ranked driver outside of the major teams and having shown considerable improvement in form, I'd say that this is a fairly deserved award.

- The “Best of the Rest” Team award = Force India - given they are still one of the smaller teams in the field and had considerable problems earlier in the year with the delayed introduction of their new car, they nevertheless did well to claw back some of that deficit later on.

- Best Qualifying Lap of the Year Award = Toro Rosso 5th (Sainz) and 6th (Verstappen) at the 2015 Spanish Grand Prix - one of those few moments where the team and its drivers really seemed to punch above their weight, even if they couldn't live up to that promise in race trim.

- Best racing lap of the year = Lap 1 of the 2015 British Grand Prix

- Most unnecessary driver of the year = Kevin Magnussen, but only by virtue of the fact that he might as well not have bothered to turn up given that the car broke down before he could even race.

- The Lucky Bastard To Avoid Any Rejectful Awards Award = Daniil Kvyat - not a disastrous season, but at the same time not one that was that impressive either.

- Most missed driver of the year = Jules Bianchi
