Autosport wrote: Ratzenberger takes victory at Charade

Roland Ratzenberger has taken victory in the the Endurance Race at Charade for the 7th round of the first season of World Touring Car Masters. The austrian driver led 32 of the 78 laps on route to take his first endurance race victory of the year, 6 seconds ahead of Tim Harvey. The other two Kaliber's of Steve Soper and Andy Rouse retired, with the later having retired while leading the race with a suspension problem.

Closing the podiums spots was the Zakspeed of Manuel Reuter, who won the independents class, 6 seconds ahead of Scott Pruett, who was 3rd for a long time until a splash and dash was required to finish the race. He finished in 4th place, 6 seconds adrift from a podium place. Rounding the top 5 was Klaus Ludwig in the other Zakspeed.
Roberto Ravaglia came home in 6th place, to take his second C Class victory of the weekend, 11 seconds ahead of the Mercedes of Roland Asch. The start of the day in C Class although was Armin Hahne, who led 3 laps of the race, becoming the first ever C Class driver to lead laps in the endurance race, and seemed to threat Ludwig for a top 5 place on place alone, running ahead of the german when his Mercedes broke down. Rounding up the top 10 spots was Martin Schanche, Christian Danner and David Leslie, who won B Class and got pole for the sprint race.

In D Class, Claude Ballot-Léna took his second victory in class of the weekend, ahead of Guillermo Maldonado and Jo Zeller.

Further drivers who scored points in the race was Mauro Baldi in 11th, Bernd Schneider finished in 12th place, 13th was Marc Hessel, 14th was Mario Hytten, 15th was Luis Perez-Sala, 16th was Olaf Manthey, 17th was Masahiro Hasemi, in a struggling weekend for the Nissan and Hoshino rounded up the points.

Sunday Report:
Sprint Race Results:

Autosport wrote:Scott Pruett steals victory to take his first victory in WTCM

Scott Pruett has taken victory in the sprint race at Charade. The american driver becomes the first american to win a race in WTCM, taking his and Merkur's first victory in WTCM. After two close calls with Gregg the past two endurance races, where she finished in 2nd, Pruett finally takes victory for Merkur. Pruett also, of course, won independents class.

The american driver did not have an easy race though: he exchanged the lead several time with the Kaliber's of Harvey and Ratzenberger, and always had Ludwig close to the group as well. Pruett stole the lead from Harvey in the final lap, and went on to win the race, 1.8 seconds ahead of Roland Ratzenberger who stole 2nd from Harvey in the final corner, relegating his team-mate to 3rd. Andy Rouse did a storming drive to finish in 4th place, with Klaus Ludwig rounding up the top 5. Reuter followed in 6th, with Roberto Ravaglia in 7th, making it a treble in C Class this weekend, the first for any driver in that class this year. Schanche scored 8th, with Soper and Hessel rounding up the top 10, with Baldi and the leading B Class driver, Winston Percy, in 12th. It was Rover's first class win in WTCM.

In D Class, Guillermo Maldonado took victory ahead of Claude Ballot-Léna and Jo Zeller.

Now, more news:

Autosport wrote:Bathurst 1000 to be run as WTCM one-off race

The great race of Australia, the Tooheys 1000, more commonly refered too as the Bathurst 1000, will be run under WTCM regulations this year, beeing held as a NC race. The contract between the FISA and the Australian Motorsport Federation has been agreed for the next 5 years.

Jean-Marie Balestre, president of the FISA, released the full statement yesterday:

"It's with great proud that the FISA announce that, starting this year, the year of 1988, the Toohey 1000, more commonly refered to as the Bathurst 1000, held at the Mount Panorama Circuit in the weekend of 1st and 2nd of October, will be run under the WTCM regulations until 1993.

The spirit of the race will not be broken: with some changes for the race, most of the entries will still be aussie based, having two separate pre-qualifying races for the Aussie based entries and another for entries from the rest of the world.

The full ruleset for the race will be released soon.

The President, Jean-Marie Balestre

Next race is at Birmingham, and entries are opened until the 23th of August.

Schneider is unavailable due to his F3000 commitments at Birmingham. As a result, we'd like to put Jochen Mass (DEU) in the #51 car for that meeting. He'll be offered 6,000 a race, like Schneider.

Autosport wrote:FISA announce Bathurst entry rules

It was a fairly interesting question to how the FISA would handle the Toohey 1000's entries, having been announced the past weeks that the WTCM organisation would handle this year's edition of Australia's greatest motor race.

The entry requirements, and weekend structure for this year's race, have been released today to the public, with the FISA making several changes to the way the weekend will go to suit the different set for the Australian race.

The biggest change is the increase of the entrylist to 144 vehicles, 36 cars per class. If the entry list gets big enough, the FISA claims 4 PQ races will be run, one for each class. If the entries aren't enough, the same structure as the WTCM weekend will be used. Races will be run on the same 50km distance as the WTCM PQ races, preceded by a 20 minute qualifying session. Compared to the WTCM, the Bathurst 1000 will feature two drivers per, a main driver and a co-driver. The co-driver will run in the Pre-Qualifying races.

The top 10 of each class will go into the main race: 161 laps around Mount Panorama, preceded by a different qualifying session. There will be two hour long sessions: one for the main driver and another one for the co-drivers. The added best time of both drivers will be added into one time, determining the grid. The top 10 teams will go into a one lap shoot-out, with a lap for both the main driver and co-driver having to be run. Again, aggregate time will determine the grid.
For the actual race, the main driver, contrary to past years, will only drive.

Besides the structure change in the weekend, a chance in the entry process has been reported. According to our information, in order to promote the entry to local australian privateers, FISA have announced special requirements for entries that are non-asian based: all WTCM manufacturer but Holden can cars. Holden can enter 4 cars. European based privateers can only enter 1 car, while australian privateers can enter 2 cars.

A summary of all the rules:
Weekend Structure:
-> Pre-Qualifying 1 (A and B Class Cars; dependant on entries)
-> Pre-Qualifying 2 (C and D Class Cars; dependant on entries)
If there is lots of entries, pre-qualifying will get split into 4 races, one for each class.
-> Qualifying (54 cars; top 10 fastest do a top 10 shoot-out for pole position)
-> Race (161 Laps)

Teams and Drivers:
Sign-Up Rules:
-> There will be a 36 car limit for each class. If the car count is low, there will be only 2 PQ races. If it's high, 4
PQ races.
-> Every manufacturer that runs cars in WTCM will be allowed a max of 3 entered cars, while Holden will be allowed 4 cars.
-> Non-Asian privateers can only enter 1 car, while asian based teams can enter 2 cars.

Drivers:
-> Every time needs two drivers: a main driver and a co-driver.
-> Co-Driver will run the PQ races, while the main driver will drive the race.
-> Qualifying for the race will include two hour long sessions: one for the main driver and another for the co-driver.
-> The added times will determine the grid, with the top 10 shoot-out for pole position having a lap from both the main
driver and the co-driver.

Prize Structure:
-> Same as WTCM (only awarded to teams who already ran races this year in WTCM).

A note: a team can enter two different model vehicles for the same team. They just need to write down they are entering two separate car models

You have until I run the Spa round of the WTCM, round 9, to post entries. Here's the entry form for the 1988 running of the Toohey 1000:

And another thing:

Autosport wrote:Mitsubishi announce manufactury effort in WTCM for 1989

Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi have announced a preparation for an ongoing assault into the World Touring Car Masters 1989 season. Despite already having been involved in the series for 1988, with Mitsubishi Starion's having been driven by privateers in Class D, the Mitsubishi team have mainly focused on the asian and australian scene, now having announced an extension of that program into the World Touring Car Masters organised by FISA.

To prepare an attack, Mitsubishi have grabbed the Mitsubishi Starion that run in the ATCC, and specially prepared them to attack the coming Bathurst 1000 race. According to Mitsubishi, the new Starion engine uses a modified version of the engine planned by Mitsubishi to have been used in rallying with the Starion in the WRC, developing around 370HP at peak power. 4 units have been delivered to australian teams to start beeing developed for the 1989 attack on WTCM.

4 Mitsubishi Starion's Turbo are available for australian teams only. The non-australian teams who want to use Starion's will have to still use the normal D Class car. The Starion Turbo will be in B Class.

A quick news: Ian's Heward entry for Birmingham is nullfiled. I can't find any records of Heward driving before the mid 90's.

So, there are still 3 vacant spots for Birmingham.

Favourites:
For the first time since Kyalami, we arrive at a track where top speed is favoured over grip that a car produces. After two races where the Kaliber Ford's where threatened, Birmingham should see us return to the usual Kaliber formation up front, with the Merkur and Zakspeed's chasing behind. Beware of the R31's as well: they have been competitive at high speed tracks so far this year, and Birmingham suits them like a glove. Except B Class to be dominated by them. C Class cars will struggle around here, and will have to hope for some unreability and strategy choices to reach the top places in the races.

Autosport wrote:Rouse and Ravaglia come through with PQ victories

The first day of racing at Birmingham is done, as Andy Rouse and Roberto Ravaglia came through to take victory in the pre-qualifying races that open any given WTCM weekend.

The british driver, in pre-qualifying 1, led home a Kaliber 1-2-3-4, a familiar site this year, winning by 2 seconds from Steve Soper, with Harvey and Ratzenberger in 3rd and 4th respectivelly. The last two made contact during the race, with a overtake maneuver from Ratzenberger on Harvey ending with both drivers the other way around at the hairpin corner. Scott Pruett was the best non Kaliber in 5th place, with the other Ford Sierra's qualifying for the race, rounding up all the 10 Class A qualifying spots. Ludwig, Gregg, Reuter, Halsmer and Schanche was the order of the PQ race and the Class A results.
In Class B, Naoki Nagasaka completed the grand slam in PQ, getting pole position, fastest lap and led every lap in his class to take victory ahead of team-mate Masahiro Hasemi and Francisco Hernandez. It was a Skyline 1-2-3-4 in class, with Hoshino taking 4th place. The Toyota's of USD came next, with Traverso ahead of Leslie and Cleland, with Niedzwiedz, Andersson and WTCM debutant Chris Hodgetts rounding up the top 10 spots, who move into the endurance race this weekend.

In the second pre-qualifying race of the weekend, Roberto Ravaglia follows up with his 4th class victory in a row, beating Mauro Baldi by 3 tenths of a second to the line, after taking the lead from the pole sitter on the first lap and managing to hang the pressure placed on him by his fellow country man. Marc Hessel rounded up the top 3 position, a double podium for the BMW Motorsport squad, as Alan Minshaw, WTCM rookie, consumed the BMW M3 1-2-3-4. 5th place went for the leading Mercedes of Luis Perez-Sala, who finished ahead of team-mates Jochen Mass, taking Bernd Schneider's drive as he's driving here at Birmingham in the F3000 championship, and Roland Asch. Mario Hytten, Didier Theys and Jacques Laffite rounded up the top 10, Laffite once again qualifying the Renault for a race this year, the second time it has happened this year. Armin Hahne was 11th, the first time he fails to qualify this year. A poor start saw him drop to 13th, and he took some time to pass cars, eventually finishing just 6 tenths behind Laffite. Campos 12th place seems him and Mediterranean Motorsport score points in Class C this year.
In D Class, Andrea Geisler took victory, with WTCM returnee Tiff Needell in 2nd and Geoff Kimber-Smith in 3rd. Andrew Bagnall, Gareth Chapman and Geoff Donnelly are the other D Class drivers to qualify.
