2016 Monaco GP - Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race

Post by DemocalypseNow »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Ericsson's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until May 31 @ 1800 GMT.

1. Sergio Perez - Once again he grabs the podium chance with both hands.

2. Nico Hulkenberg - Dat last lap move!

Honourable mention to Manor for running ahead of both Saubers, K-Mags and Grosjean at one point in the race, and for getting both cars safely home when others didn't...

1. Sergio Pérez: Unexpected podium. Also importantly beat Hülkenberg again.
2. Fernando Alonso: When there's a little chaos, you can count on him to deliver.

Much as it pains me to be an echo chamber, I had my positions decided as soon as the chequered flag had dropped...

...and, yes, it's ten for Sergio Pérez and six for Fernando Alonso for much the same reasons as everyone else.

This one is quite obvious, I guess...

1 - Perez
2 - Alonso

Honourable mention for Hulkenberg's great last lap move and Sainz's more than decent weekend. I'm sure Carlos must have laughed at the sight of a crashing Max in his mirrors...

I'll go along with that - Perez gets the 10 points for taking a slightly risky strategy and making it pay off handsomely with some impressively good times: he's proving to be very adept at taking those few little chances that come up for a good result and capitalising on them.

As for Alonso, as you say, in those sorts of mixed conditions he usually judges them very well and surreptitiously manages to creep up the running order.

I'll just ditto along with everyone else... no one else piqued my interest as much anyway.

1st - Sergio Perez - This guy's tire management is unbelievable.

2nd - Fernando Alonso - Snuck up to 5th after everyone else around him became dipsticks.

10: Ricciardo. Didn't put a foot wrong all weekend, let down by his team at the pit stop.
6: Perez on the podium in a Force India.

HM: Alonso for dragging the McLaren to 5th.

1. Perez - Whenever he has the possibility to deliver something big, he does.
2. Alonso - Held off Rosberg like the champion he is. And a HM to McLaren for another consistent double points finish.

HM to Hülkenberg for a great qualifying and his last minute move on Rosberg and to Haryanto for qualifying ahead of Wehrlein and for one time not being the one in the team doing silly mistakes.

2. Daniel Ricciardo - pole position and did nothing wrong all race. Wholly deserved to win this race.

Honourable mention - Sergio Perez on the podium, reaching for that 'best of the rest' trophy again this year.

1. Perez: Really had an outside chance of winning this race at one point.

2. Alonso: Once again gets that crapbox of a McLaren where it shouldn't be.

Honorable Mentions:

Hulkenburg: Icing on the cake for Force India.

Riccardo: Should have won this race.

10 points - Daniel Ricciardo
Drove perfectly all weekend. Got thoroughly violated by his pit crew. Again.

6 points - Sergio Perez
Unlikely podium from a driver who deserves a better car but may never get one.

Honourable mention - Pascal Wehrlein
Stayed ahead of many faster cars for much of the race, and I think he finished two laps ahead of his teammate?

Honourable mention - The Marshals
When they went full-Paul Daniels and made entire cars disappear instantly.

Honourable mention - Fernando Alonso
Another good effort in a not so good McLaren.

Perez: Another 3rd while The Hulk is closing in on most starts without a podium.

Fernando Alonso: Drove a composed race to maximize his points haul.
Colin Kolles on F111, 2011 HRT challenger: The car doesn't look too bad; it looks like a modern F1 car.

1) Sergio Perez. Strategy and pit-lane mess-ups slipped him into 3rd, but he did a fantastic job fending off Vettel to the end for another podium. He always seems to surprise when I least expect it. :D

2) Max Verstappen. Last to 9th makes him by far the best overtaker of the race. He's only rated below Perez because he couldn't keep the car off the wall.

Honourable Mentions:

Fernando Alonso. Did well to hold off many drivers for a top 5 finish.

Carlos Sainz Jr. Up in the top 5 for much of the race. Fell off the pace toward the end, but managed to salvage points for the team.

Pascal Wehrlein. Tussled with the Haases and Saubers for much of the race. The penalties may have ruined his groove, or the car petered out toward the end.

Nico Hulkenberg. Consistent run to the points, and taking a place from Rosberg in the final stretch is icing on the cake.

Daniel Ricciardo. Pushed hard to get the win back from Hamilton, but it just wasn't in the cards.
