Paddock News:

Stephen Fitzpatrick has bought 50% of DAMS

With DAMS in the red, heading into the second quarter of the season. DAMS and Stephen Fitzpatrick has agreed on a funding package. According to the terms, Fitzpatrick will provide $40m to the team and in return he will own a 50% share of the business side of things. This news comes just days after Marussia was successful buying out Stefan GP for the 2012 season.

If you haven’t post your upgrade plans yet for the upcoming in-season test, now it’s a good time to do so.

In-Season Test #1: South Korea

Welcome back folks! After a lengthy delay to real life commitments, I finally got two months or so to finish this season off before I go back to work again. So, last time I logged on, I left off in South Korea readying for the first in-season test of 2011. It’s important to remember that only the third drivers will participate in these in-season tests. So, here’s the test results from Yeongham.

1 Valteri Bottas 1:42.590
2 Jaime Algersauri +0.631
3 Romain Grosjean +0.743
4 Daniel Juncadella +0.789
5 Tomas Scheckter +0.894
6 Jerome D’Ambrosio +1.024
7 Antonio Felix Da Costa +1.052
8 Oliver Turvey +1.227
9 Pedro De La Rosa +2.160
10 Alexander Rossi +2.273
11 James Jakes +2.415
12 Josef Kral +2.447
13 Josef Newgarden +2.571
14 Johnny Cecotto Jr. +2.821
15 Dani Clos +2.983
16 Stefano Coletti +3.062
17 Jolyon Palmer +3.382
18 Michael Herck +3.604
19 Markus Niemela +4.164
20 DJ Kennington +4.897

As for the next round, I have to update the files first. As soon as I finish that process, the next round from Spain will be then posted.

Round 5 Spain

Well, we are into the second quarter of the season. This also means that the PreQ lists are recalculated. As a result of this, Euskadi, Mercedes and Sauber have been demoted to PreQ while Caterham, Campos and McLaren have been promoted out of PreQ.

So, let’s see who has the upper hand now as the paddock returns to Europe.

Pre-Q Results

1 Simon Pagenaud 1:32.249
2 Romain Dumas +0.869
3 Michael Schumacher +0.995
4 Adrian Sutil +1.477
5 Sergio Perez +1.588
6 Jules Bianchi +1.867
7 Heikki Kovalainen +1.914
8 Esteban Gutierrez +1.998
DNPQ
9 Rubens Barrichello +2.276
10 Andre Lotterer +2.439
11 Bruno Senna +2.625
12 Karun Chandhok +2.674
13 Timo Glock +2.677
14 Jean Karl Vernay +2.835
15 Davide Valsecchi +3.067
16 Mikhail Aleshin +3.242
17 Giedo Van Der Garde +3.272
18 Charles Pic +3.348
19 Jacques Villeneuve +3.439
20 Narain Karthikeyan +3.471

A little shocking that both Lotus-BMW’s are into Qualifying. Otherwise, not surprising to see both Euskadi’s into Qualifying, as well as Perez’s Lola, Gutierrez’s USF1, Kovalainen’s Carlin and Pagenuad’s Sauber. The nightmare continues for Mercedes, both cars failed to PreQ. Early candidate for ROTY perhaps?

Qualifying results

1 Sebastian Vettel 1:30.533
2 Mark Webber +0.673
3 Robert Kubica +0.798
4 Vitaly Petrov +1.158
5 Lewis Hamilton +1.280
6 Kimi Raikkonen +1.551
7 James Hinchcliffe +1.587
8 Nico Rosberg +1.754
9 Simon Pagenaud +1.793
10 Pastor Maldonado +1.873
11 Jarno Trulli +1.948
12 Kamui Kobayashi +1.990
13 Jenson Button +2.193
14 Felipe Massa +2.234
15 Fernando Alonso +2.347
16 Vitantonio Liuzzi +2.543
17 Romain Dumas +2.633
18 Michael Schumacher +2.670
19 Daniel Riccardo +2.752
20 Nick Heidfeld +2.989
21 Adrian Sutil +3.064
22 Jules Bianchi +3.510
23 Sergio Perez +3.514
24 Esteban Gutierrez +3.554
25 Jean Eric Vergne +3.825
26 Heikki Kovalainen +3.908
DNQ
27 Nico Hulkenberg +4.222
28 Sergio Canamasas +5.149

The second Caterham of Hulkenberg and the second Campos of Canamasas were the two unlucky souls that DNQ this time around.

I am assuming that the overall qualifying gaps are starting to get slightly wider from top to bottom, is that a sign of things to come or is it a fluke?

Race Summary:

At the start, Kubica and Webber managed to get the best jumps off the grid, they were 1st and 2nd early on. Eventually, Webber overtook Kubica for the lead on lap 9 heading into Turn 1. Lap 13 saw Hamilton DNF from 4th place. By the start of the first pit stop cycle, Trulli and Webber, who was leading the race both crashed out at the same spot heading out of turn 3, meaning that Vettel retook the lead. On lap 24, Kobayashi stopped to a halt as well. At Halfway, Vettel still hasn’t pitted and he was still in the lead of the race. On Lap 39, Dumas failed to finish the Euskadi from 9th place. By the time Vettel finally pitted on Lap 43, he lost the lead to Kubica who is on an obvious 2-stop strategy. However, Vettel somehow retook the lead, while Kubica was in the pits for his second stop. But shockly with just 7 laps to go, Vettel was forced to DNF from the race lead, giving the lead back to Kubica. That proved to be the last drama until the checkered flag fell. Kubica won the race over Rosberg, who finished 50 seconds back and another 7 seconds adrift was Maldonado in the Campos scoring a 3rd at Campo’s home GP. Petrov continues McLaren’s resurgent form with a 4th. Pagenaud finally scored his first ever F1 points and Sauber’s first points of the season with a 5th. Alonso who was the last car on the lead lap finished 6th. Hinchcliffe made it yet another double points finish for McLaren-Mopar while Massa salvaged 8th place points for Ferrari. Liuzzi and Button round off the points-paying positions. Further down the pack, Sutil did managed to finish the race in his Lotus-BMW gaining even more information about the car in the process despite him being 1 lap down and 14th.

Race Results

1 Robert Kubica 1:34:17.164
2 Nico Rosberg +50.437
3 Pastor Maldonado +57.370

Paddock News:

Adrian Campos: “So proud of Pastor getting a podium finish at our home race!”

In an interview after the race with the BBC, Adrian Campos was excited that their brand-new PURE V6 Turbo engines ended up exceeding all of their expectations so far this year. He went on to say, “In this day of age when the engine is even more important than ever, I’m so thankful that the roll of the dice on the PURE V6 Turbo engine is working out even better than originally intended. Given that PURE and Craig Pollack had never built their own engines before this year, they have to be given all of the credit in the world for our surprising good pace in the races!”

Could Mercedes write off this season and focusing efforts on gaining new funds for the 2012 season?

On the other side of the paddock, rumors are flying around that Mercedes is already canning this season in an effort to cut their losses and trying to reload their funds in preparation for next year. Things are so bad now that even their one of their ex-employees were caught off the record saying that “our new turbo engines have been the major issue and we all have to admit eventually that we messed up designing this engine to the turbo engine formula, but we are not so sure that we are going to scrap this POS engine yet.”

The next round from Monaco will be up by this weekend, let’s hope!

Canamasas so far: didn't started a race yet this season...

We'll promote Jolyon Palmer to the second Campos for the next 3 races, if the results improve, he'll stay

While our car is a bit off the pace in the race, it actually seems to be fairly reliable and, following the upgrades, easy to qualify. Seeing as we have already soundly beaten our WCC result from last year (unless Stefan get their act together), I'd say Lotus' rebuilding program is going pretty well. And Sutil was only four places outside the points... :vergne:

Round 6 Monaco

First things first, Andrew, since he’s first on the waiting list, will take over Red Bull unless he doesn’t want to. If Andrew is not interested, bandon23 will be next up, if he’s still around of course.

In other news, with Ferrari losing their lead in the team’s championship to Prodrive-BMW for the time being, can they bounce back? Since last time I posted, Jolyon Palmer, will attempt to make his F1 debut with Campos, after Sergio Canamasas failed to make a single race grid in his five attempts this season. Speaking of useless teammates at relatively good teams, there’s a fair share of them already emerging this year. The paddock is wondering what in the world is going on with them? Are they really off the pace that bad to begin with? Guess we can figure out if it’s just them or bad luck as we head into the Monaco GP.

Pre-Q Results

1 Simon Pagenaud 1:18.732
2 Romain Dumas +0.123
3 Michael Schumacher +0.638
4 Esteban Gutierrez +1.251
5 Adrian Sutil +1.347
6 Sergio Perez +1.470
7 Jules Bianchi +1.675
8 Heikki Kovalainen +1.854
DNPQ
9 Rubens Barrichello +2.096
10 Andre Lotterer +2.268
11 Bruno Senna +2.474
12 Davide Valsecchi +2.854
13 Giedo Van der Garde +2.941
14 Narain Karthikeyan +3.057
15 Mikhail Aleshin +3.140
16 Jacques Villeneuve +3.233
17 Charles Pic +3.313
18 Karun Chandhok +3.520
19 Timo Glock +3.723
20 Jean Karl Vernay +3.889

Not that much has changed, which is surprising because Monaco is usually the one oddball race on the calendar to begin with.

Qualifying results

1 Sebastian Vettel 1:17.360
2 Mark Webber +0.493
3 Robert Kubica +0.673
4 Vitaly Petrov +0.839
5 Lewis Hamilton +1.052
6 James Hinchcliffe +1.293
7 Kimi Raikkonen +1.332
8 Simon Pagenaud +1.347

13 Jenson Button +1.838
14 Fernando Alonso +2.004
15 Felipe Massa +2.006
16 Vitantonio Liuzzi +2.215
17 Romain Dumas +2.265
18 Michael Schumacher +2.343
19 Daniel Riccardo +2.464
20 Nick Heidfeld +2.666
21 Adrian Sutil +2.755
22 Jules Bianchi +3.103
23 Esteban Gutierrez +3.136
24 Sergio Perez +3.174
25 Heikki Kovalainen +3.252
26 Jolyon Palmer +3.382
DNQ
27 Jean Eric Vergne +3.429
28 Nico Hulkenberg +3.725

Palmer did barely made it onto the race grid at the expense of Vergne in the second red bull.

Race Summary:

A clean get away from all 26 cars on the first lap was the biggest sigh of relief. On Lap 9, Hinchcliffe suffered a suspension issue and had to DNF. Lap 30, Rosberg was the second DNF. On Lap 58, Kimi DNF from 9th. During that time, Vettel had to pit unscheduled costing him the race lead to Kubica, he re-entered the action just behind the Prodrive-BMW. 9 Laps left to go, Gutierrez stopped to a halt. 3 laps left to run and Kubica and Vettel are still duking it out for the win. On lap 77, Vettel executed a successful overtake on Kubica into the Nuvelle chicane and with that daring move, Vettel won the Monaco GP.

Race Result

1 Sebastian Vettel 1:48:24.163

Race summary

Our first drama was Alonso DNF’ing on lap 20. After an amazing performance in Qualifying, James Hinchcliffe suffered tire failure heading down the back straight and caused terminal suspension damage on lap 26. On the next lap, Jenson Button DNF’ed as well. While Esteban Guiterrez suffered yet another DNF on Lap 42, the Ferrari of Vettel stopped on track from the lead of the race and Kimi shortly thereafter stopped as well. Giving the lead to Kamui Kobayashi briefly before his second stop. In the end, Mark Webber took the victory for Brawn GP. With Kobayashi settling for second despite a late-race charge to take the race win. Hamilton gets 3rd for Force India. However, the biggest surprise is Romain Dumas, who scores his first ever F1 points with a 4th place finish. Rosberg gets 5th. Kubica finishes 6th for Prodrive-BMW. Liuzzi’s 7th made it a double-points finish for Manor. Massa salvages 8th for Ferrari. Maldonado gets 2 points for 9th and Pagenaud gets the final point for 10th. Michael Schumacher was oh so close to getting points but he finished just out of points in 11th and the last car on the lead lap.

Paddock News:

Euskadi gets a healthy Points haul

After the race, Romain Dumas was glad that he finally put together a solid race for once and gets rewarded for his heroics. Talking to the press afterwards, “Look, we were oh so close to a podium finish on the final lap but settling for 4th place points is like winning a race for us. Now let’s hope that’s enough points to get us out of Pre-Qualifying!”

The next race will be up in a few days.

If Heidfeld is unable to improve his performance by Hungary or Belgium then Brawn may consider putting Grosjean in the car for a race or two and see how he goes. We are happy with Mark's win though.

That was disappointing- I thought that Lotus had really turned a corner into being regular qualifiers, but I guess that our chassis/engine combo (particularly as the only competitive BMW-engined car was Kubica's Prodrive) didn't suit the atypical demands of the Montreal circuit.

Round 8 Donnington Park

Sorry, I was out for so long, Gran Turismo Sport has taken over things since it came out! I almost forgot that I still have half the season to run still!

So, this is the second time that modern F1 cars raced in Donnington Park in this alternate universe. Even though it’s a little bit on the shorter side in terms of lap length, it’s still an old school throwback to the good old days. Also, in regards of the three remaining in-season tests, I will still conduct them but all 20 teams will automatically buy two random upgrades for each test, just because I was off for so long, consider it a present from me!

With that in mind, here’s what happened.

Maybe a bit of a bold question here, but what are the chances of some Championship standings?

Equally, what are the chances that they're in plain sight but I've somehow missed them?

Round 9 Hungaroring

Well, we are into the second half of the season now. In regards of the Pre-Q list for the next four races, it hasn’t changed one bit. In other news, Ferrari has retaken the lead in the constructor’s title at the halfway mark. They are leading Prodrive-BMW by 10 pts coming into this race. The Top 4 teams in the standings have been pretty obvious so far and therefore they have built an adequate cushion to the rest of the field, but for 5th place in the team’s title it’s going to get intense with Red Bull and Force India currently tied for 5th right now but three points behind them are Campos and McLaren, who by the way almost quitted on us before this season even started. Another two points further behind them is Manor who is looking to continue their uptick in fortunes in the second half. In regards of the Driver’s title, Robert Kubica who has already formally signed the WRC contract for 2012 is determined to win the world championship in supposedly his final season of Formula 1. The Polish driver leads defending WDC Sebastian Vettel by 5 points coming into this race. Third place Mark Webber is a longshot coming into this race since he’s 17 points behind Kubica but anything can still happen.

Anyways, the next race is at the Hungaroring, a very tight and twisty track when qualifying is supposedly vital. So, here’s what happened

Pre-Qualifying results

1 Pagenaud 1:18.764
2 Dumas +0.657
3 Schumacher +0.719
4 Sutil +1.086
5 Perez +1.578
6 Bianchi +1.600
7 Kovalainen +1.611
8 Barrichello +1.847
DNPQ
9 Guiterrez +1.874
10 Lotterer +2.112
11 Senna +2.186
12 Glock +2.380
13 Chandhok +2.436
14 Vernay +2.550
15 Valsecchi +2.691
16 Aleshin +2.774
17 Karthikeyan +2.941
18 Pic +2.950
19 Van der Garde +3.073
20 Villeneuve +3.129

Qualifying results

1 Vettel 1:16.844
2 Webber +0.686
3 Kubica +0.836
4 Raikkonen +0.932
5 Petrov +1.075
6 Massa +1.094
7 Hinchcliffe +1.303
8 Hamilton +1.318
9 Button +1.335
10 Alonso +1.531
11 Barrichello +1.961
12 Heidfeld +1.973
13 Schumacher +1.973
14 Maldonado +2.315
15 Palmer +2.357
16 Dumas +2.571
17 Liuzzi +2.699
18 Vergne +2.753
19 Rosberg +2.817
20 Pagenaud +2.900
21 Sutil +3.191
22 Kobayashi +3.272
23 Trulli +3.380
24 Kovalainen +3.577
25 Riccardo +3.819
26 Perez +4.093
DNQ
27 Hulkenberg +4.279
28 Bianchi +4.740

The biggest surprise here is that Barrichello almost got into the top 10 in qualifying. It’s partly due to the track being so twisty and less reliant on outright power.

Race Summary:

Early on in the race, Massa’s car stopped on track on lap 4. Sadly for Barrichello he couldn’t keep up with the top 10 runners and eventually DNF’ed due to engine problems on Lap 15. A few laps later, Kubica was forced to jump out of the car and retire from 5th due to suspension damage. After a pretty craft race strategy got Raikkonen the race lead after the second cycle of pit stops, the iceman never looked back and recorded a race win. Webber came in 2nd and Vettel had to settle for 3rd.

Race Results

1 Raikkonen 1:45:55.865
2 Webber +6.147
3 Vettel +16.491
4 Button +47.940
5 Alonso +50.819
6 Hamilton +1:07.445

19 Perez 2 laps
20 Riccardo 3 laps

Paddock News:

Michael Schumacher finishes 7th and gets much needed points to boost his spirits up

After the race, Schumacher felt that his morale is much better than at the beginning of the season at Euskadi but still nowhere close to what he once was. According to his personal agent. “He wants to ensure that when he leaves the sport for good, it would be on his own terms.” Regarding the possibility of Schumacher racing in 2012, the agent simply said, “It all depends on the offers he’s going to get on the open market and whether the offers he would receive are good enough for him to stay in F1.”

The next round should be posted within 2-3 days.

As we're easily capable of escaping pre-qualifying now, Lotus will go for one quali pace (because we still aren't consistently making it onto the grid with both cars) and one race pace (points would be nice too!) upgrade. So far though, Lotus' revival has been going better than expected...
