Autosport wrote:Castellano takes victory at Pau

It was to be a day of Nissan R32's domination pace wise - but it was a day to remember for Argentina, as Oscar Castellano and Escuderia Hernandez won the Pau Endurance Race with their privateerly entered Nissan Skyline R32, as the TC2000 championship finished a lap ahead of the Roland Ratzenberger Zakspeed and Deborah Gregg's Mkuer RS500, who gets a podium in their first race of the year that they qualified too.

Despite Castellano victory, it was the manufacutrer R32's that dominated the race - Asch led until he retired, when Geisler inherited the lead, but she retired with 15 to go from a suspension failure, leading to no points from Nismo today. Ludwig finished 4th, with Steve Soper rounding up the top 5 for Kaliber.

Joachim Winkelhock scored a 6th place for Philips, with Traverso making it a super happy day for Argentina, as by finishing 7th overall, he took victory in B Class. Donnelly was 8th overall, with Baldi 9th - taking victory in C Class, and Marc Duez rounding up the top 10, taking pole in the sprint race. D Class saw no finishers again.

Autosport wrote:Castellano makes it double victory at Pau

It was a brilliant weekend for Escuderia Hernandez, as Oscar Castellano took a double victory, and a PQ victory, during the weekend, as he finished 10 seconds ahead of Klaus Ludwig, who finished 2nd, and Andy Rouse who was 3rd - a storming drive by the british driver.

Starting from 10th place, Castellano came through the pack to take the lead on lap 8 and never let it go, desipte some trouble with lapped traffic, which made Ludwig be as close as 1 second behind.

Traverso finished 4th place overall, winning B Class in the process - a phenomenal weekend for Argentinean motorsports at Pau. Donnelly scored a 5th place for Philips, with Ratzenberger 6th for Zakspeed. Duez scored 7th, once again a brilliant performance in his WTCM show up with Waterloo, taking victory in C Class, with Rosberg, Gregg and Cleland rounding up the top 10.

Nismo, meanwhile, had again bad luck - Geisler was up to 8th overall and coming to what seemed to be at least top 5, when she retired with the same problem as race 1, while Asch had a dismal race - he couldn't overtake for his life, crashing multiples times through the race, despite setting fastest lap in the process.

It was a fairly interesting pre-qualifying races at Brno round of WTCM. Class A saw Roland Asch finally take his first victory while driving for the factory Nissan squad, as he beat the surprising Bernd Kasper, driving a privateerly entered Ford Sierra RS500 prepared by former F1 constructor Estonia Motorsports, and ihs team-mate Andrea Geisler, who rounded up the top 3. Pole sitter Viktor Kazankov finished in 4th place for Estonia, with Toshio Suzuki rounding up the top 5.
Manuel Reuter was the leading Zakspeed in 6th place - after a poor weekend at Pau, the RS500 seems to perform better at Brno this time by - with the usual suspects of Ludwig, Nagasaka, Ratzenberger and Soper rounding up the top 10 and guaranteeing qualifying for the main races this weekend in A Class.

In B Class, despite Audi's strong pace, Toyota came out on top, as the ever improving John Cleland took victory, beating his team-mate David Leslie and Juan María Traverso to the top step of the podium. von Gottorp was the leading Audi in 4th place, with B Class championship leader Keke Rosberg rounding up the top 5. Despite beeing the faster of the Audi's throughout the race, Warwick only finished in 6th place, with Heger in 7th. The Volvo's of Andersson, Bowe and Francevic rounded up the top 10, qualifying for the main races as well.

C Class saw another dominating performance by Roberto Ravaglia, who despite some pressure from Tim Harvey and Will Hoy, adds another PQ victory this year to his name - if the luck on the endurance race and sprint races finally turns around here, Ravaglia is still on time to fight for the C Class championship, as championship leader Mass retired from a qualifying spot with 1 lap to go in the race. The surprise in C Class though were the Renault Voeckler's, whose changes made at Pau were enhanced here at Brno, and it showed, as Laffite finished in 4th place, qualifying for the race. Hessel rounded up the top 5, Ostreich 6th, with Quester, Cudini, Baldi, Malcher in another Renault, Hahne and Brancatelli rounding up the points paying positions and qualifying spots in C Class.

D Class saw Helmut Maier win again, as he beat Antonin Charouz to victory. Both qualified, as Klara Benes rounded up the podium in class, with Bychl and Linari rounding up the top 5.

Satuday Afternoon Report:
Endurance Race:

Autosport wrote:Ratzenberger takes victory with move in final lap as Nissan's collide

It was a race for the memory at Brno, as Roland Ratzenberger took his Zakspeed Ford Sierra RS500 to the top step of the podium with a move on the final lap on Toshio Suzuki's Nismo R32, who finished in 2nd place less than a second behind the austrian driver.

The end of the race was marked by some rain that hit the Masaryk Circuit, which let the asphalt quite slippery. This caused an accident in lap 80, when Naoki Nagasaka lost control of his Nissan R32 on the slippery conditions and crashed into Roland Asch running in 3rd place, his team-mate, and sent both cars out of the race. This prompted Ratzenberger's victory, because Asch and Naoki were pressuring Ratzenberger at the time of the accident. Both drivers got away with no injury, even though Asch and Nismo's boss weren't very happy with the incident clearly....

Viktor Kazankov carried the USSR flag of Estonia Motorsports, running an outdated RS500 from last year, to 3rd place, about 20 seconds off the two leader's. Kazankov went very emotional as he climbed into the podium to receive his 3rd place trophy, and the independents winner trophy.

Derek Warwick took advantage of Steve Soper's splash and dash to finish in 4th place for Audi - the best result so far for Audi in WTCM - and won B Class, with Soper finishing in 5th place. Keke Rosberg finished in 6th place overall, with Ravaglia finally finishing a endurance race to score a 7th place and C Class victory for BMW, followed by his team-mate Marc Hessel in 8th. Baldi rounded up the C Class podium with his 9th place, while Francevic 10th gave him a B Class podium and a pole for the sprint race.

Per-Gunnar Andersson finished in 11th place, with Ostreich, Harvey, Hahne, Cudini, the retired Nissan's of Nagasaka and Asch and the Volvo of John Bowe rounded up the poins paying positions. Helmut Maier won D Class ahead of Antonin Charouz.

Sunday Report:
Sprint Race Results:
Image

Autosport wrote:From the ashes, Asch wins!

It's a brand new record in WTCM, as from 17th place on the grid, Roland Asch took victory in today's sprint race at the Masaryk Circuit, located at Brno. Asch took advantage of Suzuki's last lap breakdown to win the race ahead of his team-mate Naoki Nagasaka - Nissan's first win since Fuji Endurance Race earlier this year. Roland Ratzenberger completed his best weekend so far this year, as finished on 3rd place. Reuter came from 34th and last on the grid to finish 4th, with Ludwig in 5th. Kazankov finished in 6th place, winning Independent's Class, with Geisler, Soper, Traverso, with a phenomenal drive to 9th place from 22nd to win B Class and Kasper rounded up the top 10, with Leslie and Warwick also scoring points today.

In C Class, Marc Hessel beated Ravaglia to victory, not allowing his team-mate to score a triple class victory this weekend at Brno, with Mauro Baldi rounding up the top 3 in class. D Class was again Helmut Maier ahead of Antonin Charouz.

Like this, in the championship, Ratzenberger climbs into the lead on 92 points, 7 more than both Reuter and Rosberg, who are both on 85 points, with Ludwig 4th on 83 points, Soper 5th on 80 points and Nagasaka 6th on 76 points. 16 points cover the top 6 positions, with Geisler in 7th already 29 points behind Roland and Asch in 8th 45 points behind the championship leader.

Zakspeed continue to rank up the points in the teams championship, now on 264 points, 120 more than USD in 2nd place, with Nismo now on 134 points and up to 3rd place in the standings. Kaliber kept 4th place on 106 points, while Hernandez dropped to 5th on the same 91 points.

In manufacturer championship, Ford are on 144 points now, 38 more than Toyota who now only have 1 point of advantage to Nissan, with Audi 4th on 84 points, fighting Volvo, Mercedes and BMW for that 4th place, who are on 79, 75 and 74 points respectivelly.

In a very sunny Automodro di Monza, in Italy, the WTCM cars lined-up for the pre-qualifying races on a packed house for the friday races.

In front of the italian fans, Manuel Reuter took victory in the A Class race after fighting team-mate Frank Biela throughout the race, winning by less than a second in the end. Roland Asch came home with a podium place, about 5 seconds back, with Ludwig and Ratzenberger rounding up the top 5 for Zakspeed. Fukuda was 6th in the Impul R32, with Winkelhock 7th, a surprising Donnelly in 8th, with Castellano and Nagasaka rounding up the top 10, and qualifying for the main race - meaning both Suzuki and Geisler won't qualify for the races.

In the B Class race, David Leslie won from pole position in his USD Toyota, with Cleland in 2nd place just a bit over 1 second back on his team-mate, with Gottorp in 3rd place in his Audi. Traverso was 4th in the USD Toyota, with Rosberg continuing to rank up the points with a 5th place again. Heger and Warwick followed suit with a 6th and 7th for Audi, with Borgudd, Francevic and Larsen rounding up the top 10 in the Volvo's. Bowe and Andersson also qualified for the main races.

In the final PQ race of the day, Will Hoy took a dominating win in his BMW E30 M3 from pole position, winning by 6 seconds from BMW factory driver Fabien Giroix, who holded off defending WTCM champion Tim Harvey for 2nd place, as the brit took the final podium spot. Ostreich finished in 4th place, with Cecotto rounding up the top 5. Fabron finished in 6th - showing again the pace of the improved Renault - with Malcher in 7th. Mass was 8th his Mercedes 190E, with Giudici and Ravaglia rounding up the top 10. Hahne and Lafffite also qualified, as in D Class all 4 VW's Golf qualified, as Peynirici won ahead of Menar, Maier and Kudrass.

Saturday Afternoon Report:
Endurance Race:
Image

Autosport wrote:Ludwig takes victory at Monza as Phillips steal first podium

It was a rainy afternoon in Monza, as the Endurance Race was held under slightly wet conditions over 60 laps and 350km's of distance ahead of the Tiffosi who didn't have much to cheer for this weekend, of course.

In the end of 60 laps of racing, it was Zakspeed's Klaus Ludwig who came out on top, as he led home the first ever podium from Phillips and Joachim Winkelhock in the series by 30 seconds and Naoki Nagasaka in the Nismo R32, who came home 3rd after trying a different strategy, 8 seconds back on Winkelhock, after overtaking Donnelly in the last two laps of the race. The british driver scored his best result in WTCM so far with a 4th place, with David Leslie winning B Class to round up the top 5 of the race.

Masutaro Fukuda scored a 6th place for Impul, with John Cleland and Keke Rosberg following suit in 7th and 8th for USD - Rosberg continuing to have a 100% finish streak so far this year - and the Audi's of Derek Warwick and Leonhard von Gottorp rounded up the top 10. Robbie Francevic finished in 11th place, Ravaglia 12th, taking home another victory in C Class, with Cecotto, Larsen, Ostreich, and the Mercedes of Harvey, Hahne and Mass rounding up the points paying positions.

D Class saw Gokor Peynirici win the class ahead of Wolfgang Kudrass, the only two finishers in the class.

Saturday Report:
Sprint Race:
Image

Autosport wrote:Donnelly storms to Monza sprint race victory

At just 20 years old and 22 days - britain's own Geoff Donnelly, a man who turned some heads in the paddock when he showed up last year in BTCC with his enormous build and a love of Greggs sausage - has become the youngest ever World Touring Car Masters race winner, as he hold off the two Zakspeed's of Klaus Ludwig and Manuel Reuter for sprint race glory. As he exited his Philipps Sierra RS500, the brit erupted into tears, not hanging the incredible feat he had just achieved.

The race wasn't easy for Donnelly - he ended the first lap in 8th place, but by the end of the sixth lap he was already 3rd, and on lap 9, got the move on his team-mate and chased after the leader at the time, the R32 of Masutaro Fukuda. Fukuda preceded for 8 laps to have the widest Nissan Skyline R32 in the world - using the traction of the car to get a good enough distance to hang Donnelly down the straights - but a mistake through Parabolica which saw him run wide allowed Donnelly and the Zakspeed's past as the japanese finished 4th, his best result so far in WTCM. Donnelly then had to beat the Zakspeed's, and that's what the did - the Philipps was losing time in the corners and straights, but Geoff used lapped traffic to his advantage and holded off the Zakspeed's by less than a second to take his first ever victory in WTCM.

Naoki Nagasaka finished 5th in the works Nismo R32, with Winkelhock dropping to 6th place in the end in the other Phillips. Castellano drove a very good race to finish 7th overall, with Asch and Biela coming from behind as well to score points - 8th and 9th respectivelly. John Cleland rounded up the top 10 to score victory in B Class, ahead of the Audi's of Leonhard von Gottorp and Derek Warwick, who finished 11th and 12th respectivelly.

In C Class, Johnny Cecotto returned to the top step of the podium, bringing his Prodrive E30 M3 7 seconds clear of the Mercedes of Armin Hahne to score his first class victory since the Watkins Glen sprint race, as Sophie Fabron finished in 3rd in C Class - the first ever podium for Renault in this class. D Class saw Wolfgang Kudrass beat his team-mate Helmut Maier to victory, with Gokor Peynirici rounding up the top 3.

Autosport wrote:Suzuki and Quester surprise at Charade to win PQ races

As last year showed, WTCM's visit to the Charade circuit produces some of the best racing in the calendar of the world's premier tin-top series. Last year, we saw the likes of Armin Hahne make headlines in the Endurance Race and Scott Pruett taking Merkur Racing's, now Rick Miller Racing, victory in WTCM in the sprint race, holding off the faster Kaliber's to win. Pre-qualifying races here last year didn't change, as it seemed we are going to have very close racing throughout the racing again, just like last year.

Class A, despite having been dominated by Oscar Castellano - who led 10 of the 13 laps which made the 50km's race today - saw Nismo's Toshio Suzuki take victory by just a bit over a second over the Hernandez driver, as the R32 of Andrea Geisler rounded up the podium. Klaus Ludwig was the best placed Sierra RS500 in 4th place, less than half a second behind Geisler despite carrying full ballast weight, followed by his team-mate Manuel Reuter, while pole sitter Masutaro Fukuda could only achieve 6th place in his Impul R32. Roland Asch was 7th, followed by Andy Rouse in his Kaliber - returning to the main races after 2 weekends of failing to qualify - with Nagasaka and Ratzenberger rounding up the top 10, with Roland just 8 seconds behind Suzuki after 13 laps.

Class B saw David Leslie dominate to add another PQ victory to his name - the brit continuing to make headlines with his incredible pace in the Supra prepared by USD - followed by the Audi's of Derek Warwick and Altfrid Heger, who finished 2 and 6 seconds adrift from the race winner today. Traverso finished in 4th place, with B Class championship leader Keke Rosberg rounding up the top 5. John Cleland raced from second last on the grid to finish 6th, as he beat the leading 240 Turbo of Andreas Larsen who finished in 7th place, as Francevic and Granberg followed suit in the manufacturer Volvo's, with the Mitsubishi of Scott Pruett rounding up the top 10 and the qualifying places for the main races.

Class C would provide the biggest shock of the afternoon, as the small privateer german outfit Volker Schmidt Racing was taken to promised land by austrian ace Dieter Quester in his privateer Mercedes-Benz 190E - the austrian overtaking 2 cars in the final lap to go from 3rd to 1st by the end of the race, winning by less than a second to the E30 M3 of Jean-Michel Martin and by a second from Johnny Cecotto. Hessel and Ravaglia followed suit, having raced from the midpack to finish 4th and 5th respectivelly, with Ostreich in 6th place in the 3rd manufacturer BMW, with Phillippe Haezebrouck in 7th place to qualify in his first WTCM race weekend. Baldi and Harvey followed in 8th and 9th place as the leading AMG Mercedes-Benz, with Michele Di Gioia rounding up the top 10 in the Alfa - the first time he qualifies for the main races this year. Giroix and Hahne qualified as well, scoring the final points in C Class. D Class saw Thomas von Löwis of Menar take victory ahead of championship leader Helmut Maier, as both qualified to the main races.
