INstead of running under the Volkswagen Dealers Australia banner, the manufacturer VW squad will compete under their usual name of Volkswagen Dealers Racing.

To speed up sign-on, Fiat Australia has decided to take #32 instead of waiting for whatever's left. Ignore this post, I had a brief flash of stupidity. Everything's fine now, I think.

Please explain :L

You wanted more entries, so I created one and added it to my earlier post (I should have notified you have this earlier). Anyway, I feel the entry makes some sense as Fiat was in the Australian market at the time (and somewhat ambitous about succeeding), and were about to introduce the Uno and Tipo to Australia, and Faulkner (the driver) was known for racing small capacity touring cars, while other marques such as Renault have had local importers in certain WTCM races. Please tell me though if this is yet another stupid idea (or is not possible at all) in terms of running a second team, as I am willing to scrap this plan considering there are more entries now.

UPDATE: I have badly mis-researched- as Fiat Australia ceased to exist in 1990 anyway, and only sold the Croma and Regata, and Faulkner's been pinched by another entry, this whole enterprise is pointless and I'll delete the entry and (possibly) replace it with something else. Apologies for (briefly) wasting your time with a Fiat-based interlude (again)

Apparently Fellows got pinched already so I switched the lead driver in the #6 Roush Ford to some young guy who drives for Roush in NASCAR back then, Mark Martin.

Hopefully he's not a totally useless pleb. :glasses:

Autosport wrote:Pre-Qualifying at Bathurst dominated by local teams

Track knowledge means a lot in the racing world, and no one knows better Bathurst than the local drivers who spend the year driving in the Australian Touring Car Championship - and its their mission to take the fight to the WTCM big boys from Europe around the Mount Panorama circuit which hosts the final round of the 1989 WTCM season.

And so it was: the aussies took the fight to the WTCM teams and won, taking victory in all pre-qualifying sessions. In the A Class race, the 05 entry of Peter Brock and Brad Jones took victory, leading every lap in the process, holding off the late race pressure from the #17 DJR of Dick Johnson and Denny Hulme, who after clearing the Ford Motorsport Australia of Brandon Cassidy and Kayne Scott, was by far the quickest car out there, erasing Jones lead fairly quickly, but the Mobil driver defended very well to take victory. The Zakspeed of Ratzenberger and Reuter rounded up the podium, over 15 seconds back on the winner - showing the DJR built Sierra really is a match for the ballast Zakspeed Sierra, with the other DJR of Crichton and Fitzgerald in 4th place. The Zakspeed of Ludwig and Biela rounded up the top 5 overall.

The leading R32 was the "guest" entry of Wada and Tsuchiya in 6th place - showing some good pace around there, clearly aiming for the race winner Sunday. The Kaliber entry of Soper and Rouse was the best british squad in 7th place, followed by the Phillips of Winkelhock and Donnelly. Cassidy and Scott were in 9th place, after a mistake by the young new zealander dropped them from 3rd to 12th place - he was still able to recover to 9th place by the end. The Allan Moffat Racing of Gregg Hansford and Klaus Niedwiedz rounded up the top 10. All cars up until 24th place qualified for the race, of course - a major influx from A Class entries compared to the lower classes making CAMS take actions of how to keep competition alive between them. Also of note was the qualifying of all the TWR Holden cars - the new Commodore brought to Bathurst proving quite effective, giving the australian team their first and only qualifying of the year into the actual race of the weekend.

In B Class, just a bit over a second separated the top 3 by the end of the race - the Toyota Team Australia entry of John Faulkner and Neal Bates taking victory by 7 tenths from Leslie and Cleland, with the top 3 beeing rounded up by Gottorp and Jelinski - the german co-driver making good moves into the Elbow on the other Toyota Team Australia of Wilmington and Bagnall, which finishe din 4th place by the end. The other USD of Rosberg and Traverso rounded up the top 5 - practically handing the B Class title to David Leslie. Warwick and Heger were 6th, with the ever improving Larsen Racing System Volvo of Borgudd and Larsen in 7th - the only Volvo that qualified, considering both factory Volvo's retired within 30 seconds of each other. The R31 entered by Murray Carter and co-driven by Akihiko Nakaya was 8th, with the two factory Mitsubishi's rounding up the top 10 - the Sekiya/Pruett entry ahead of Los/Lambden.

In the final pre-qualifying race, the surprising pole sitter - the Bavaria Automobiles E30 M3 driven by Haezebrouck and Bratislav Enge - lasted less than a lap when it retired from the lead of the race. This handed the lead to Winchester Motor Sport entry of Johnny Winchester and Nicholas Griffith - the young american co-driver holding into the lead until there was just only 3 laps remaining, the Andersson/Rex Rotary M3 driven by Gary Croft and Lindgren-Jansson took the lead and despite the american keeping contact, he couldn't pull the move off and Lindgren crossed the line to win the final race of today, ahead of Griffith. The Bill Bryce Racing E30 M3 of Brett Riley and Ludwig Finauer rounded up the podium spots, with the factory E30 M3 of Hessel/Ostreich following suit in 4th place. The M3 Motorsport entry of Peter Doulman and John Cotter rounded up the top 5, while the drive of the day belonged to the #3 Renault of Fabron and Ragnotti, which came from 15th on the grid to finish in 6th place by the end, setting a fastest lap more than 1 second ahead of the next fastest - a trully incredible performance by Jean Ragnotti. Laffite and Malcher followed his team-mate behind in 7th place, with the leading Mercedes of Hahne and Mass in 8th place. The Voeckler brothers team followed in 9th place, with the other Mercedes of Harvey and Baldi in 10th place, winning 3 points on Cecotto in the C Class championship battle - the Prodrive entry only coming home in 13th place, and therefore, scoring no points.

D Class was won by the Renault 11 of David Sala and Richard Vorst. The Bob Holden Corolla Levin co-driven by Tim Hall was 2nd in class, with Geoff Full and Michael Adcock in 3rd place in the Madison Racing entry. The Toyota Team Thailand Levin was the last car to qualify in this class.

Sunday Report:
Endurance Race
Image

Autosport wrote:Nissan shine at Bathurst as Ratzenberger wins the title

Amidst sunny and good weather, the 1989 Bathurst 1000 started amidst a championship fight between team-mates, and with the doubt if an austrlalian car could beat the european teams. The answer ended up beeing a race decided by strategy and pure based luck, the eventual winner taking advantage of a late retirement to steal the first victory for the Nissan Skyline R32.

Starting from pole position, the #18 DJR holded the lead until lap 5 of the race when the #26 R32 of Wada and Tsuchiya took the lead. The race then turned into a 5 horse race, before turning into a 4 horse race, as the defending champion #01 car of Cassidy and Scott dropped out. The 4 cars who seemingly had a chance of winning were the #26 R32, both local R32's, the #27 and #28, and the #05 RS500 of Peter Brock and Brad Jones. Mark Blundell, at the wheel of the #28, did a storming stint to take the lead and lead by almost 20 seconds by the time the first pitstop phase came. He kept the lead until lap 52, when the trio caught him and started to fight between themselves. Richards then dropped out from P4, when he suffered a brake failure into turn 1 ending in the tyre wall. Despite the heavy impact, the kiwi driver was fine and waved to the crowd as his excellent drive came to an end.

The australian hopes of seeing a full aussie team win the race evaporated on lap 74, when 3rd place man Peter Brock came to the pits with a broken gearbox that dictated the end of his race as well. This promoted Tony Longhurst squad to 3rd overall, as Mark Blundell overtook Takao Wada for the lead of the race. This is where the race was almost decided in Blundell's favour - a mistake of Wada sended the R32 into the wall at the Dipper, and suffered aerodynamic damage. With now cronic understeer on the car, Wada started to lap around 4 seconds a lap slower than Blundell, and by the time the 3rd pitstop phase came, was almost a full lap down on the race leader. Wada dropped behind Longhurst's Sierra by the time he had pit, and the australian hearts saw a race victory possibility again. But the #25 Sierra retired just 2 laps later after taking what was defacto P2 on the road, with a broken engine.

Blundell by now had a very safe lead, and seemed sure to take victory. Wada started to slowly reel the british driver in, but was still a minute down as we entered lap 149. Disaster struck for the british driver, as his Skyline R32's engine started to smoke and broke down - the engine had been loosing power for a few laps, and finally had cried enough. The #28 Nissan broke down, and gave the lead to the #26 factory Nissan, who kept it until the end, to take victory in the 1989 Bathurst 1000, with a full japanese line-up: japanese team, japanese car and japanese drivers - Takao Wada and Keiichi Tsuchiya. About 90 seconds later, the 1989 World Touring Car Masters crossed the finish line - Roland Ratzenberger bringing his Zakspeed Sierra in second place, and with Klaus Ludwig retiring, took home both the overall title and A Class title. An emotional Ratzenberger climbed into the podium to receive his trophy, erupting into tears and telling sorry to his team-mate for the season to end like that. A trully noble gentleman in a world where not many of those exist. Ron Fellows and Deborah Gregg brought the Rick Miller Racing Merkur in 3rd place, and last car in the lead lap. Kevin Waldock and Anders Olofsson brought the Playscape Racing Sierra in 4th place - an incredible result for the yellow Sierra, with Paul Radisich's taking 5th place from the B Class winner - the #73 Audi V8 of von Gottorp and Jelinski - with just 2 laps to go. Slim Borgudd and Andreas Larsen brought the only 240 Turbo home in 7th place - enough to take home the independent champion trophy to Slim Borgudd. Marc Hessel and Markus Ostreich finished 8th overall to take victory in C Class, with the #50 Bill Bryce Racing E30 M3 in 9th place, and with the Voeckler brother's Renault 21 rounding up the top 10.

Geoff Full and Michael Adcock won D Class ahead of the Toyota Team Thailand car.

Despite not finishing the race, both Johnny Cecotot and David Leslie took home their respective class titles, and Helmut Maier won D Class championship.

Championship standings and budgets will be updated as soon as possible.
