Re: Alt-1957: Enter the German Grand Prix!

August 30th 1957, German Grand Prix prequalifying

He bleeds!

For the first time of the season, Stirling Moss retired from the British Grand Prix, allowing Jack Brabham to win a third race. This continues the exchange of wins between the Brit and the Australian, and with Moss scoring no points, Brabham is now just ten points adrift in the championship race. With B.C.M.A. benefiting from a pace advantage over O.S.C.A., if the new turn of reliability continues, the four remaining races this season could prove to be very exciting indeed.

47 entries were accepted for this race, with that of Karl Weber rejected for incompleteness.

48. Gerino Gerini (Officine Alfieri Maserati) - Cooper T41 chassis 2, Maserati 56A engine 2

-After taking a few races out, the East German Köthen team returns for the Nürburgring with Heinz Melkus.
-The larger entry list once again brings back Hernandez and DB to the paddock. Taraschi is back for DB, though Hernandez have expanded, entering an odd B.C.M.A.-Gordini combination for Joe Flynn alongside Thirion. Flynn took the job, being free from his IRC commitments, but an administrative mix-up saw them assigned the engine already promised to Voeckler. Flynn's entry has therefore been withdrawn.
-B. Bira finally comes back after his earlier injury, though Troy Ruttman's Silverstone results have warranted a third Rob Walker entry for the rest of the season.
-As in Spa-Francorchamps, Volga have brought out all eight of their excuses for Formula 1 cars. There's no reason for the Soviets to do better than usual.
-Returning to the continent, Gordini have left Redmond Gallagher behind and gone back to Ramos in the third car.
-Following Consalvo Sanesi's failure to perform throughout the year, Ferrari have benched the Italian in favour of the promising Wolfgang von Trips, who comes back to F1 after an aborted 1955 stint with Phoenix.
-Like in 1956, Helm Glöckler's Equipe Anglaise returns, though this time, the Frankfurter has loaned a works-prepared BRM.
-Carel Godin de Beaufort's Ecurie Maarsbergen makes another appearance this year, wheeling out a 1956 Ferrari like in Belgium and the Netherlands.
-Belgian amateur Olivier Gendebien also makes an appearance, also in a loaned Ferrari R560.
-Still reduced to one single car, Scuderia Adriatica have brought Scarlatti to Germany, letting Bianchi rest this weekend.
-After making the unusual decision of missing their home race, Connaught have come back with Halford and Lewis-Evans, neither car being damaged in Silverstone by the private entrants.
-Having missed the British rounds, Maserati are back for the German Grand Prix, still with Gerini driving the Cooper-Maserati.
-The move back to the continent meant that the likes of John Bekaert, Ecurie Ecosse, the Daily Express and Ron Flockhart couldn't make the journey. Reg Parnell Racing were also forced to abandon plans with crippling financial trouble. More surprisingly, David Hampshire did not enter the German Grand Prix despite ostensibly healthy finances. Here's hoping he turns up in Monza.
-Perhaps resting on their Silverstone laurels, perhaps traditionally oblivious to entry deadlines, Asso di Fiori have again declined to enter this race. This is nothing new.

As the British Grand Prix results are not considered until Italy, the following 13 drivers will have to compete in prequalifying.

Troy Ruttman

Alexander Krasovsky
Edward Lorent
Vasily Shakhverdov
George Sharanov

13. Eduard Lorent (Volga) - no time

As can reasonably be expected, the Volgas monopolised the bottom of the timing sheets. Ruttman and von Trips, obviously remaining cautious in a session they were certain to dominate, showed promising pace for Saturday's main session. Halford, Glöckler and Gendebien make the cut easily, while the van Loon Guidobaldis also prequalify handily. Of the Soviet cars, Veretov is the only one to join Metelev and Shteyngrud in the main session.

So what happened here then - did he crash or did his car blow up? Either is fine, not like we'll repair it anyway

42. Berardo Taraschi (DB) - 11:50.85

B.C.M.A.'s stranglehold on the top spot in qualifying is beginning to weaken. Brabham took the constructor's eighth consecutive pole nonetheless, but teammates Hawthorn and Collins are third and fifth, with the O.S.C.A. drivers González and Moss splitting the three. A good drive from Maglioli puts him sixth, ahead of Ramos. Good performances to be had from Cabianca, Gregory, Melkus, Scott Brown and Lewis-Evans, while Helm Glöckler makes his first race start. With three Volgas, two Guidobaldis and a DB in the session, qualifying would be relatively easy for the remaining cars, but two had to fall foul. These were Olivier Gendebien in a privately-entered Ferrari and the ever-underperforming Bruce Halford in the Connaught, over 45 seconds behind teammate Stuart Lewis-Evans. The German Grand Prix is shaping up to be very interesting indeed.

September 1st 1957, German Grand Prix

The start was clean, with little change among the frontrunners. Jo Bonnier didn't make it to the third turn, pulling back into the pits using the escape road with clutch failure. The B.C.M.A. trio took the initial lead, but as the first lap came to a close, it was Stirling Moss who held the race lead ahead of Hawthorn, Collins, Brabham and Maglioli. However, Moss couldn't hold the lead for long, and while he managed to hold off Collins and Hawthorn, Brabham was let past his teammates and promptly took the lead on the second lap through a daring move at the Karussell. On the fourth lap, however, Hawthorn decided to ignore his teammate's championship bid and took the race lead at Flugplatz. Further behind, Duncan Hamilton spun out on oil and, distracted by the accident, B. Bira, Jim Russell and Giorgio Scarlatti collided behind him. Scarlatti continued, but Russell's Vanwall was heavily damaged when it hit an earth bank. Russell walked away, but went to the hospital for checks.

It transpired that Brabham's issues with pace were compounded by mechanical troubles. On lap 6, the all-too-familiar sight of an angry Australian by the trackside was confirmed, as the B.C.M.A. gearbox expired. Further back, André Guelfi had a spin at Karussell, catching air coming off the banking and snapping a wheel on the landing. Helm Glöckler also retired, pulling into the pits with transmission issues. Two laps later, Norfolk's race was ended when Archie Scott Brown's engine expired. 27 drivers entered the ninth lap, but only 20 would reach the end. Carel Godin de Beaufort missed his breaking point at the first corner, and the ensuing collision resulted in Wolfgang von Trips getting tripped into a slow roll. The German was thrown clear from danger and was uninjured aside from some bruises. Concurrently, Giulio Cabianca had an oil leak, Heinz Melkus' gearbox failed, Giorgio Scarlatti's brakes faded and Gerino Gerini cut a throttle cable, coasting to a halt. Most importantly, Mike Hawthorn made a mistake while trying to increase his lead and ended up stranded astride a ditch.

González was in second place and poised to take the lead, but Peter Collins had different ideas. With both his teammates eliminated once again, he set about gaining ground and in one fell swoop, he took the race lead by the end of lap 9. Behind him was an incredibly close fight between González, Simo, Moss and Volonterio, with the Gordinis of Ramos and Manzon following a ways behind. Manzon soon caught the pack, while Ramos was left behind to suffer a gearbox failure, soon followed by both Rob Walker Lotuses with synchronous fuel pressure issues. As Collins pulled away in the lead, the front battle calmed down, with González in second place ahead of Simo, Moss, Manzon and Volonterio. However, with just three laps remaining, González stopped at the far end of the circuit with steering issues. Simon was left to defend second place from a hard-charging Moss, while Fangio inherited sixth place. Hans Herrmann also retired, having run out of fuel. One lap later, they were joined by Tony Gaze with clutch trouble.

Moss soon lost pace and was being caught by Robert Manzon. However, Volonterio stood between the two, and deftly kept the Frenchman at bay. Collins easily won the race, with Simon coming home a very commendable second. Stirling Moss managed to hang on to third place, extending his championship lead. Volonterio, Manzon and Juan Manuel Fangio closed the points finishers. Troy Ruttman was running in eighth place when he ran out of fuel on the final lap of the race. He was classified in eleventh place.

Please can I run the British Racing Partnership for 1958?

After accidentally messing up H. A. R. T. in 1956 and deliberately ruining Volga this year, I'd like to have a proper stab at running a good team

Connaught will be back with the same car setup as last race.

However, as for drivers, an agreement has been made with Norfolk Engineering to bring in Russell to take over Halford's car to make up time following Norfolk's recent loss of one of their cars.

This is intentionally a one off deal for now but there will be talks regarding the driver lineups for the last 2 races. Bruce Halford is currently still in contract with us but would be available for contact from any privateer entries.

New Entries:

Jim Russell (Connaught Engineering) - Connaught Type B chassis 1, O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 9
Stuart Lewis-Evans (Connaught Engineering) - Connaught Type B chassis 2, O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 10

As Monza is too far for the Voeckler team to travel - and given the shortly changing relationship between Voeckler and Gordini ( ;) ) - they are okay with Simon representing the factory team.

Maria Anna Peduzzi would like to enter using Ferrari R560 chassis 5 - Ferrari RS560 engine 9, if possible.

No problems with these allocations, it is approved.

If anyone is looking to make a last-minute privateer entry, the following 1956-spec combos are free to hire;

Ferrari R560 chassis 1 + Ferrari RS560 engine 7
Ferrari R560 chassis 4 + Ferrari RS560 engine 2

Why not? Scuderia Marzotto will enter Giannino and Paolo Marzotto. Giannino will take the first combination, Paolo the second one.

I'd also like to rent an OSCA F156A chassis from whoever has one available, to allow Graham Hill to run in the Grand Prix for OSCA.

Giannino Marzotto (Scuderia Marzotto) Ferrari R560 chassis 1 + Ferrari RS560 engine 7
Paolo Marzotto (Scuderia Marzotto) Ferrari R560 chassis 4 + Ferrari RS560 engine 2
Vittorio Marzotto (Scuderia Marzotto) OSCA F156A chassis 2 + OSCA 1500S-56 engine 4
Umberto Marzotto (Scuderia Marzotto) O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 16 + OSCA 1500S-56 engine 5
Graham Hill (O.S.C.A.) O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 3 + O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 12

EDIT: Following a deal with Klon, the two chassis owned by Ecclestone will be transferred to OSCA. Hill will receive chassis 3, Vittorio Marzotto will use chassis 2. Umberto Marzotto is still looking for any modern (1956 or newer) chassis for the Italian GP.
