Autosport wrote:German-Argentine team buys out Valerian's ARWS assets

After several rumours of their demise, it has finally been announced that Valerian's ARWS operation has found new hands, in the form of the German-Argentine magnate, writer and theorist Enrique von Richter. He will be leading a new team, which will he call the GA Squadron Racing, basing it in Schwerin, Germany for logistical purposes.

"Racing has been a long standing passion for me." said von Richter, during a press release for Argentine newspaper Clarin. "Now that I have an excellent base to build my team upon, I won't waste the chance." he continued. "Various Argentine and German companies have approached me for backing. I plan to make this not only a proud first ARWS effort for all Germans, but also all Argentines." he concluded.

In another interview with La Nacion, von Richter said he pledged to continue with Yamaha, saying the following: "Yamaha's been more than happy to continue with us. I don't see why not. They have been doing very well."

In terms of drivers, little is known, however, rumour is known that von Richter might have a pen-and-paper contract with Terry Hawkin. Another one is that he might have conviced a renewal with Fredo Mestolio or even a temptation of Phillippe Nicolas. Whatever it might be, what it is know, is that von Richter surely presents a very unorthodox addition to the ARWS paddock.

In a stunning twist of events, JJD criticiser and french breakfast item Jean-Maxime Bachot has in fact been revealed to be the online alter-ego of a man named John,
somewhere near Hull. This has come to light after members of the former BAR team,
whom "Bachot" claims he tested for, could not remember anyone Belgian and whingey.

In a further revelation, a scan of the official FIA entry lists only revealed one Bachot to have competed in Formula One - Silvio Bachot, who drove for the Shadow team in the late 70s.

3rd - Terry Hawkin - His driving in the first half of 2019 was absolutely terrible, as he went between overstepping the mark and really overstepping the mark. Some good drives at the end of the year saved him from slam-dunk ROTY however

2nd - Euromotor Racing - The fact they were the first team since 2015 to fail to start a race at all said it all, really

1st - Jones Racing - Absolute unmitigated disaster with no end in sight

3rd: Venturi Formula: Such a promising team on-track, killed off by unstable management. What could have been will always remain a subject of conjecture.

2nd: Jones Racing: The decline of the former champions dangerously accelerated in 2019 as the gutless Ford engine and an aging chassis were left in the hands of two rookies. Especially the second half of the season was a disaster, with no points scored and two failures to qualify. Jones need to turn things around quickly if they want to avoid the fate of Gillet.

1st: Euromotor International: Their season was over before it began. With a chassis old enough to run at the Goodwood Revival, the odds were against them already. Opting for an engine known for its lacking power output turned out to be a poor decision. Unsurprisingly, only the most desperate of pay-drivers volunteered to drive the car. Not that it mattered who drove the car, given the lack of downforce and power. Eighteen failures to qualify and seventeen failures to pre-qualify result in a well-earned ROTY for the team who will have to seriously step up their game if they want a long-term future in ARWS. Signing Benoît Voeckler is a sign that they don't.

Officially Unofficial ARWS 2019 Reject of the Year nominations

(Dis)Honourable Mentions

Nick Nurmester - Was so goddamn slow all year and to top it off caused hilariously stupid incidents, most notably with Fredo Mestolio and Nino Barlini at As Fartway.

Peak Aeroracing Engineering - A driver past his prime, a pay driver, then another washed up past their prime driver, a gutless engine and a chassis that would be outclassed by a spoon. They only finished as high as they did due to the As Fartway stupidity.

3rd - The As Fartway circuit - The Scandinavian Grand Prix in 2019 was a complete trainwreck, and in all honesty, should've never happened. It saw ridiculous results like USD scoring 10 of their 12 points there, Kamaha scoring their only points of the year, and Aeroracing getting their only start. It also saw incidents that made Life GP look normal, like the Nurmester/Lamberigts saga. Officials have announced an increase in run off area, but the damage in team owners' eyes has been done already.

2nd - Jones Racing - 2016 seems like such a long time ago, doesn't it? Jones made a complete garbage truck leakage of the year, thanks to 2 rookie drivers doing the inevitable and cracking under the pressure, Ford making an engine with less power than the Peel P50, and a chassis from a medieval horse carriage, which lead up to the team managing to fail to pre-qualify twice, and getting beaten by Rob Lomas Racing in the Pre-Qualifying Cup, who are basically still on life support after 2018. So, Sammy and his bunch of tossers need to get themselves sorted before they end up like Gillet or Aeroracing.

1st - Euromotor International - Dear god, where do we begin here? Using a chassis that predates the dinosaurs, an engine that would make a kid's tricycle look fast, 2 no name pay drivers at the wheel, and publicly stating their goal for 2019 was to finish last, and then everyone was ready for the biggest joke in motor racing since the Life F1 team. The team duly delivered, becoming the first team since 2015 to fail to make a single race start, and confirming the story of lel that began with overpaying Mario Hytten in 1989.

3rd - Euromotor International: Why so "low"? Because this was always going to happen. With a car so old it belongs in the Natural History Museum and an engine more powerless than a second Russian presidential candidate, what did you expect? The whole experience saved Du Lon a bundle in gym membership fees, as she spent the year carrying the entire team on her back.

2nd - Fusion Lotto Racing: One of the worst championship defenses since either of France's attempts to retain the World Cup. Hawkin spent the first half of the year with a title hangover, the old car couldn't hold a candle to the leading triumvirate, and Marcel Agyemang-Badu's strong rookie year was the only thing that spared the team's blushes. With one year left on the Renault contract, Fusion Lotto Racing needs to pull out all the stops to factor in the battle for race wins again.

1st - Jones Unipart TAG: The British team's omission of "Ford" from its official name was a precursor of things to come, as Sammy Jones' eponymous outfit waged war on the Dearborn automotive manufacturer's horsepower-challenged engine in the back. Losing multiple-time champion Mark Dagnall and F1-bound Diego Alvarez Torrente left the team with a pair of rookie drivers in the car and, although Nate Cameron and Gary Pacer boasted plenty of junior-series pedigree, the two were thrown into a difficult situation. Jones scored just 18% of the 63 points it managed in 2018, offering a poorer return than a broken boomerang.

3rd: Blokkmonsta - Turned the best One-Lap Specialist into a geek that will never be heard from again. We expected them to be comfortably on the grid all year with Lamberigts being who he is, but a 50% DNQ rate for him is inexcusable for the team that expected to move forward, even if the writing was on the wall before Adelaide.

2nd: Terry Hawkin - Probably the worst championship defense we have ever seen in the sport. Sure that car wasn't the best, but he never covered himself with glory with how much he blew almost every chance to put up a fight.

1st: Jones - 11 points for Jones all year. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha jesus christ what is Sammy doing? Why did he think not bringing Hawkin back into the fold was a good idea? Why did he think designing a lethargic chassis and not developing it or the engine was a good idea? A true litany of woe for a team expected to be in the fight all year.

Missing in picture: Euromotor - They Pre-Qualified ONCE. They exceeded everyone's Expectations in doing so, since Expectations are the biggest deal when voting for ROTY.

With voting closed, here was how reject of the year panned out:

RejectSport wrote:2019 Season Review Part 4 - Reject of the Year

As part of our annual season review here at RejectSport, we run a reader poll to award Reject of the Year. We received many great suggestions from you, and we collated all the votes to determine who you thought was the season's worst performers. Without further ado, here is our Reject of the Year podium for the 2019 ARWS season:

Honourable Mention

4th - Terry Hawkin - 7 pts - The reigning world champion had one of the worst title defenses imaginable, scoring a grand total of zero points and a race ban in the first half of the season. He did recover somewhat in the second half of the year, but a second race ban and continually throwing results away through silly incidents was indicative of the struggles he had in 2019

Reject of the Year Podium

3rd - Fusion Lotto Racing - 9 pts - Terry Hawkin's struggles were symptomatic of the underlying issues going on at Fusion Lotto Racing in 2019. Off-season dramas over driver contracts gave way to genuine concerns to the pace of the car. Concern gave way to full-blown panic by the time Adelaide rolled around, and at no point in the year did the team look like genuine contenders for wins or titles. Marcel Agyemang-Badu may have scored four podiums over the course of the year, but at least three of them could be attributed to freak results, as he flattered only to deceive time and time again. With no end in sight for the slow-motion trainwreck, more of the same could be expected for 2020.

2nd - Euromotor International - 18 pts - Their press release in February where they AIMED to be last in the championship said it all. 36 attempts, 36 failures to start a race, although they did get worryingly close to making the field in Macau. The Audi engine proved gutless, the chassis hopelessly outdated and their driver lineup hilariously out of their depth over the course of the season, propping up the field wherever they went. While there was some schadenfreudian satisfaction to be had in watching it unfold, we feel that a not-inconsiderable portion of the vote was genuine animosity towards the squad for wasting a valuable entry slot and everyone's time.

1st - Jones Racing - 41 pts - From the offset, the warning bells were there for Jones Racing in 2019. They had lost their dynamic duo of Mark Dagnall and Diego Alvarez-Torrente to Kjellerup and Precision respectively, and were forced to take on an all-rookie combination in Nathanael Cameron and Gary Pacer. There were also mumbling within the team that Ford had fallen behind in the development race, leading to angst between Jones and their engine supplier.

However, nobody expected it to be this bad. 11 points was their total haul for 2019, all of which came in the first half of the year as the team fell into a mire they couldn't get out of. Neither driver were capable of leading the team forward, Dearborn had clearly stopped caring about their plight and their chassis was starting to get long in the tooth as Sammy Jones' patience finally ran out. Being eliminated in Pre-Qualifying by Euromotor of all squads at Macau highlighted just how low the once champion squad has sunk.

AutoFiction wrote:EXCLUSIVE: Peak Aeroracing Engineering has peaked, crash imminent

The long-running saga that is Peak Aeroracing Engineering continued today, with the news that Harris Finance has entered administration, citing "financial irregularity" as the primary culprit. With chairman and founder Craig Harris going underground entirely, many rumours have circulated over the true nature of the collapse of the corporation. While the tangled web of half-truths and misinformation is untied however, attention must focus on the organisations it effects, including the Peak Motorsport Group.

Having been heavily funded by Harris Financial and Craig himself being a major shareholder, there's been intense speculation as to the future of the team has been rife. It's expected that the operation will be pared down significantly. This is believed to include the closure of the entire Mont Blanc Endurance racing division and the spin-off of Peak Motorsport Canada to a new entity co-owned by former Indycar team owners Gerry Forsythe, Jimmy Vasser and James Sullivan. All this however pales in comparison to the fate that has befallen the flagship ARWS operation.

Once the pride of the Volkswagen AG group, Peak Aeroracing Engineering has become arguably the biggest joke the series has seen since its inception, continuing to plummet to new depths in record time. However, the gag has taken a dark and sinister turn, with reports out of Germany that the team are yet to pay their share of development costs to Audi for the upcoming season. As a result the manufacturer is threatening to issue a winding up order against the team, arguing that the team was potentially trading while insolvent since October 2019.

Facing financial perils, a continued brain drain of key staff and a falling out with their engine supplier, the future looks bleak for PAE. It's virtually certain that Audi will not renew their works deal with the squad, and few other suppliers are willing to work with them without up-front payment. In fact, sources close to the ARWS commission have noted that the team's entry for the 2020 season has been marked as provisional, and will only be confirmed once the team gets their finances in order. PAE are well and truly moving into uncharted territory, and there seems to be no end in sight.

"We've been looking at entering the series for several years now, and we finally got the opportunity to do it with a home-grown team." said Mooloy Foods CEO Blake A. Legge. "The ARWS is one of the largest sporting competitions in the world, and the exposure will help us to go global with our brands."

PAE have also signed a major sponsorship deal with Australian retail chain Dick's Hen House, which will feature prominently on the sidepods of the car for the duration of the season.

At the press conference, many changes were announced, including a return to the old Kahama team name. As of the 2020 season, the team will compete under the name Best In The World Kahama Motor Sport, with a livery similar to the 2012 livery being currently designed.

Multiple personnel changes were announced: former Best In The World UK vice-president Rheon Miller will be charged with running the day-to-day operation of the team. The team also announced Du Lon and Carmen Álvarez Torrente as their drivers for the upcoming year.

Barii Mori, who had been under pressure from Yamaha and team sponsors to sell the team, will remain with the team in an administrative position. Lon announced that the team will be looking to hire 50 additional employees to improve the performance of the team immediately.

Autosport wrote:Jones set to install Couteau as team principal

The Jones ARWS team are set to announce that Jacques Couteau will join the outfit as team principal, Autosport can reveal.

Former Fusion owner Couteau, who guided Terry Hawkin to the ARWS title in 2018, will take up the day-to-day running of the team as owner Sammy Jones will assume a less hands-on role.

In hiring Couteau, the Jones team is believed to be looking at an overhaul of the 2017 ARWS constructors' champions, which finished in a lowly ninth place in last year's championship with just 11 points, a 51-point reduction over the previous season's tally.

The team has lost support from main sponsors Unipart and TAG, and the current links with long-time engine partner Ford are tenuous - Jones having become unhappy with the Dearborn manufacturer's current-generation powerplants.

Nathanael Cameron is poised to remain as the team's lead driver, having been managed by Couteau's Astro management stable for the past three years, winning the AutoReject 3.5 title in 2018 at the Frenchman's Nebula outfit.

However, it is believed that Gary Pacer will leave the team after just one season, with Couteau expected to draft in an experienced hand into the second car to lead development over the season.

MotorBuzz wrote:5 potential lead drivers for Jones next year

Change is afoot at Jones Racing's AutoReject World Series outfit. It's been a long winding downhill road, but Sammy Jones' eponymous outfit has hit rock bottom. Change was needed. And Sammy has finally admitted defeat.

Jacques Couteau, who masterminded Fusion's rise to championship winners in just two years, has been drafted into steady a sinking ship. He's given current second driver Gary Pacer his marching orders, and wants an 'experienced' team leader to replace him.

Problem is, top quality team leaders don't grow on trees. So what slim pickings has Couteau to work with. Not much, though there's a potential for surprise...

1. Alexey Buyvolov
Renewal talk over Buyvolov's contract with Simpson has been almost non-existent, after a 2018 season where he was beaten by new arrival Jean-Luc Schiller led him to retreat into his shell, nothing like his championship contending self from 2016 with Aeroracing.

We've seen he can compete in the past though, including those mega drives in a gutless Dofasco before making it big in ARWS. A team switch could be just what he needs to rediscover his form, and now has enough seasons under his belt in ARWS to be considered an experienced hand.

2. Daniel Martins
You can't fault his loyalty. Even when Aeroracing descended into farce, Martins stayed true and tried to make the best of a bad situation. His patience must be wearing thin at this point though, and there's fewer drivers out there with more ARWS experience out there.

Is he past his prime? Probably. Can he help bring stability to a shaky team? Definitely. He might not be the driver to bring them silverware, but he can at least help them reverse a downward trajectory.

3. Shinobu Katayama
Eight seasons in ARWS means twice race winner Katayama ticks the experience box, but is there any gas left in her tank? A second place finish at this year's Scandinavian GP silenced some critics, but others remain sceptical. She turns in great drives occasionally but has never shown the consistency needed to be a team leader.

4. Nathanael Spencer
Another driver that ticks the experience criteria with ease, 2011 ARWS champion Spencer's been floating around reserve roles for a few years now. His last full-time drive was 2016 when he was 3rd in the championship, but was beaten by team-mate and pay-driver Ron Mignolet in a care capable of more.

When IBR were bought by Voeckler in the 2016-17 off-season, he lasted seven races before getting the sack, moving back to old haunt Boxtel before they folded. Interestingly, Couteau hired him as a supersub in 2018 at Fusion, so perhaps a repeat occurence isn't out of the question.

5. Terry Hawkin
Yep. Terry "debut champion" Hawkin. Here's one driver who has a fighting chance of helping Jones save itself from doom. His title defence at Fusion was a disaster, but then so was their car, a once dominant design unchanged and surpassed by rivals a year later.

He's still got speed in spades though, and while he's only got two seasons under his belt, that disastrous title defence will have taught him plenty of lessons. There's also few who have title winning experience out there. Can Couteau tempt his old charge back into his fold? It's possible, and with current team Fusion not looking any better for next season, jumping ship might be on Hawkin's agenda.
