No problem.

I shall auto-schedule the Lotus team's D&T for their 1986 car, for any 1985 races where I don't hear from you.

After such an amazing pole for De Cesaris, it's gutting that the car expired and denied him the victory.

Next year's car for all our remaining development please.

Ferrari would like to point out it is not lazy and is manually implementing its D&T. We expect this to be a continued consideration by Ferrari International Assistan.....ahem, I mean, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile.

Round 13 - Belgian Grand Prix, Spa-Francorchamps, 15th September 1985

Qualifying Results:
Prost's steady hand would grant him pole position in Belgium, three-tenths ahead of team-mate Pironi who appeared to enlist a much more aggressive approach to the turns, ultimately costing him time. Winkelhock continued BMW's recent good form, and was the first of several Pirelli-shod cars, all benefitting from a newly-developed compound. The Minardis lined-up a competitive sixth and seventh, behind a surprise performance from the Tyrrell team; all four cars looked like they'd be in for a squabble on race-day. Derek Daly in the RAM did his usual sterling job - easily qualifying for the race, and McLaren, too, put in a solid performance, starting just shy of the top ten. Those using Renault's legacy engines all struggled around Spa, with the Lotus team setting the quickest time of all customers - fifteenth and eighteenth.

Race Results:
Senna had taken the fight to the Ferraris in both qualifying and the race, making a late-race pass on Prost, but Pironi was simply too quick. Two Ferraris graced the podium in Belgium, stamping home their domination in the Constructor's Championship on the competition.

De Cesaris no doubt imagined he would be finishing fifth, until team-mate Patrese expired with engine failure on lap forty. Andrea held onto his track position for three points, hounded by Bellof until the very end, who was making up for a problematic qualifying performance. Jarier, also, while looking unimpressed with himself after the race, had picked-up a valuable point for Tyrrell. Both the Arrows cars were not at home in Spa, and Rosberg gave away his starting position when he spun at La Source on the second lap.

Special Event - Tyrrell
In July, this year, a consortium of major Japanese auto manufacturers formed under the name 'SIDEWAIS:86'.

'SIDEWAIS:86' consisted of official, corporate motorsport representatives from Nissan, Mitsubishi and Subaru. According to Dentsu, who had been employed as the concern's public relations firm, the group intended to enter Formula One as an engine supplier.

The Japanese press reported that the three companies intended to jointly-developed an engine, with each company providing funding and influencing the design of the prospective engine, in such a way that it represents each manufacturer's desired road car. In addition to this, HKS (HKS Co., Ltd.) had been contracted to develop and manufacture the engine.

Unknown to the Formula One paddock at the time, Tyrrell sponsors Canon and Olympus had quietly provided major R&D funding to back the project. Although there is no official statement of this, it is suspected that the two companies intended to pressure the Tyrrell team into using these group-developed engines.

Motives for the collective project were not clear, although some have suggested it may be in response to Honda's last-season success with the McLaren team, the existing market presence in Formula One of major Japanese corporations (such as the aforementioned Canon and Olympus), or to jointly develop technologies which can be shared between the three companies' future product ranges for much-reduced R&D costs.

Financial details of the group investment were made public in August, in the form of funding levels from each manufacturer, and in some cases, the car they intended to market via the engine:
  • Nissan pledged to invest ¥1.5 billion (approximately £10.5 million), and intended the group's engine to resemble an F1-capable variant of a 2.6L straight-six turbocharged engine they are planning to use in a 2-door coupé - suspected by motoring press to be a re-boot of the 'Skyline GTR' - in several years' time.
  • Mitsubishi pledged to invest ¥430 million (approximately £3.1 million), and hoped to influence the consortium's engine such that it will retain the characteristics of the '4G63T' 2L, straight-four turbocharged engine used in high-end versions of their 'Galant'.
  • It is unclear the amount of investment Subaru committed, however, the company stated that they desired the group to develop an engine based around their 'EA-82T' turbocharged flat-four engine used in the 'Alcyone', which is branded in North American markets as the 'XT'.

However, this weekend, the consortium has fallen apart in something of a media spectacle, as apparently none of the manufacturers were able to agree on a prototype engine design that they felt represented the engine configuration used in their respective road cars.

With millions invested and the public watching, all three engine suppliers are desperate to save face and win an exclusive supply contract with the Tyrrell team. They have slashed potential supply costs and created incentives in an attempt to out-do each other:

  • Nissan have promised that they will now be developing a V12 engine, by bolting two of their straight-six turbocharged units together, for a massive increase in power. Unlike Mitsubishi and Subaru, Nissan will not offer a fully works deal to Tyrrell, insisting that - like Honda - they must keep control of the engine's direction of development. The company would like a guaranteed supply contract for one year-only (1986), at a cost to the Tyrrell team of £7,050,000.
  • Mitsubishi President Toyoo Tate boasted with a smile to reporters on Friday that their F1 engine prototypes would see "fifty-thousand miles of testing at... top circuits, here in Japan," if chosen by the Tyrrell team. The company would like a guaranteed supply contract for the next two years (1986 and 1987), at a cost to the Tyrrell team of £5,480,000 for 1986, rising to £5,830,000 for 1987 - with a promise of more testing taking place between those two seasons.
  • Subaru have made no comment regarding changes to their engine, leaving some to suggest that they do not have the necessary resources to make sweeping, expensive changes to their Formula One engine prototypes. However, company President and self-confessed F1 fan Toshihiro Tajima made an outlandish and emotional statement through an interpreter in a press conference on Friday, saying "Subaru will make any engine Tyrrell want us to for 1987. Anything. They can choose anything they want in an engine and we will make it happen. Please - just give us a chance!" Subaru have pledged to use remaining development funds to help neutralize the cost of the engine supply for next year. The company would like a guaranteed supply contract for the next three years (1986 to 1988), waiving any cost to the Tyrrell team for 1986, and equal payments of £5,200,000 in 1987 and 1988.

* Join forces with Nissan. You will be guaranteed semi-works Nissan engines for 1986, at a cost of £7,050,000.
* Join forces with Mitsubishi. You will be guaranteed works Mitsubishi engines for 1986 and 1987, at a cost of £5,480,000 and £5,830,000, respectively.
* Join forces with Subaru. You will be guaranteed works Subaru engines for 1986 to 1988; initially free of charge, followed by costs of £5,200,000 for 1987 and again for 1988. In addition, the Tyrrell team will be granted the ability to design their own engine from scratch - at Subaru's expense - for 1987.
* Decline any of the supplier's offers. If this option is chosen, both Canon and Olympus will turn hostile to the Tyrrell team, due to their wasted development funds.

The Tyrrell team are requested to respond to this event.

Arrows will continue to refrain from using D&Ts, as we need the money for next year. It is beginning to look inevitable that we'll lose third in the WCC to Minardi at the rate they're scoring, as only greater reliability has even kept us ahead in the second half of the year.

I am also intrigued to see what Tyrrell-Subaru (if it happens) will come up with- the possibilities for rejectfulness are almost limitless

Sticking with development on next year's car, tempting as it is to put a real effort into overhauling Arrows.

I'll be very interested to see how obscenely powerful you try to make that engine.

Also, does that mean that the other two manufacturers are also planning to enter the sport next season?

Thank you for your decision :).

Just to confirm, you will be using Subaru's F1-level variant of their 'EA-82T' turbocharged flat-four engine for 1986. For 1987, you will be the sole participant of a new 'Engine Design' phase, held prior to the existing 'Engine Configuration' phase.

As I'm aware of Subaru's history in Formula One, I feel I should clarify that there will be no onus on you whatsoever to re-create the Subaru 1235; you are free to do so, only if you wish to.

Hi,

It does not. Although I'm playing with the narrative and mixing things-up a little, I don't want to push things too far away from reality ;).

Round 14 - European Grand Prix, Brands Hatch, 6th October 1985

Qualifying Results:
Rain was forecast all weekend, and Saturday's qualifying session would receive a light sprinkling throughout.

Even in it's Grand Prix configuration, the many corners and few possibilities for heavy acceleration around Brands Hatch rewarded teams with well-sorted chassis' and responsive engines. You couldn't help but appreciate the three Prancing Horses; their cars and drivers were competitive at almost any track, in any conditions, and the Ferraris were loved by the British crowd, all starting within the top six. The not-quite-sure-if-it's-raining-or-not conditions also suited the Williams cars and drivers, who reveled in throwing caution to the wind and showing some of the older drivers that their trepidation was unwarranted.

Rosberg, Nannini and Winkelhock pounced as usual when the big boys slipped-up, putting themselves into the top ten when teams like Brabham, Tyrrell and McLaren under-delivered performance-wise. Towards the rear of the grid, the Minardi drivers were spinning all over the place, even on the dry sections of track around the back of the circuit. Without the disadvantage of the long straights, Derek Daly and Corrado Fabi qualified their difficult cars for the race, but it was another double-DNQ for the Ligier team.

Race Results:
The rain re-emerged around four hours before the start of Sunday's race, which intensified throughout the afternoon, leading to lap-times nearly thirty seconds slower than expected in the dry.

The European Grand Prix also saw an uncharacteristic display of immaturity from Prost; he failed to anticipate the level of grip at the start and ran wide at the first corner, dropping to eighth. By lap nineteen, he had passed Winkelhock down Paddock Hill Bend, but trying the same move again the next lap on team-mate Pironi, he under-steered into him, pushing both off into the gravel. Soon afterwards, Alboreto - who had already passed Senna - overtook Bellof for the lead.

Boom... boom~ went Bellof and Rosberg's engines on lap forty-nine! The German driver and his Brazilian team-mate had slipped back from the start due to the Williams chassis riding too low and starting to aquaplane, forcing their drivers to slightly lift-off on the flat-out sections like Pilgrim's Drop, Clearways and the Brabham Straight.

Nannini had made most of his progress before the heavy rain in the latter half of the race, and hung-on to second place from the hard-charging Mansell toward the end. Fighting drives from Mansell and Warwick would reward the pair with good points and finishing places well above where they started. Both the Alfa-junior cars finished ahead of the sole remaining works car of Patrick Tambay, having also squarely beaten the official team in qualifying.

Special Event - McLaren
For the second time, this year, a long-established team Formula One team has become insolvent:

BioBiro wrote:Teams may go into debt. Your lending limit is your starting budget. Any team that is in-debt to more than the amount of their budget at the start of the season (a starting budget of £7,500,000 means you may borrow as much as £-7,500,000) will be declared bankrupt and immediately disqualified from the series.

Continued development of both their 1984 and 1985 cars has put the McLaren Formula One team over a million pounds beyond their lending limit, and nearly two million pounds in debt. The team began 1984 with a balance of over thirty million pounds, and an aggressive style of team management brought the team to victory, but reckless spending left them with nearly nothing to begin 1985 with, and consequently, banks were wary of offering significant financial support.

With an increase in Japanese investment in modern Formula One, McLaren management hoped to attract white knight investment from Honda, who would ensure the team's participation in motorsport would continue. However, a reverse takeover instead occurred - against the will of all major executives - from Philip Morris International.

Philip Morris have injected the team with a post-takeover payment - after all debts have been cleared - of £3.5 million, to "aid [the] transition from being a British company, to the more diplomatic and practical American style of corporate management." The company, who own the intentionally-recognized Marlboro brand - in addition to other popular brands like Chesterfield and Parliament Blue, have a long history of providing major sponsorship to Formula One teams (such as McLaren and Alfa Romeo) as well as junior open-wheel series like Formula 2 and Formula 3 in Europe, where McLaren - under the guise of 'Project Four' - began their relationship with the Marlboro brand, in 1980.

Philips Morris have made it clear that the 'McLaren brand' is of significant value, and are already planning a budget-priced cigarette line marketed towards teenagers and young adults, branded with the team's namesake:
Image

As such, the team - despite turmoil at the top - has received only minor changes in the public's eyes; the FIA have confirmed that the team will no longer be known as 'McLaren', but rather, 'Marlboro Team McLaren'. The addition of the word 'Team', however, belies greater changes behind the scenes. Marlboro have insisted that the team's British executives be removed, and new management centered in the United States put in place.

...

You, FantometteBR, however, are not licked yet. As the departing boss of the McLaren - a team twice Constructor's Champion - when you speak, the world listens. In front of the world's press, you have one minute - one chance - to change the Formula One world.

What will you say?

* "There wasn't sufficient sponsorship out there." This choice will result in an increase, of approximately 10%, in sponsorship incomes for all teams, from 1986 onwards.
* "FOCA doesn't pay enough back to the teams, each quarter." This choice will result in an increase, of approximately 25%, of FOCA TV payments to all teams, from 1986 onwards.
* "Engine were too expensive - they're taking advantage of us." This choice will result in a reduction, of approximately 10%, of engine supply costs for all teams, from 1986 onwards.
* "F*** all of you." This choice will result in no changes within the industry.

Thank you all for your D&T requests. Those with automatic D&T will have their requests processed as normal.

I'd like you all to welcome 'Regenmeister94' to the series, who will be taking over as manager of the newly United States-based 'Marlboro Team McLaren'.

Currently, FantometteBR is listed as the 'outgoing' manager of Marlboro Team McLaren, and Regenmeister94 is are listed as the 'incoming' manager; nonetheless, the latter has full control of the team. Once FantometteBR makes his decision regarding the recent special event, Regenmeister94 will be listed as the sole manager of the team.

Well, there's not much point in upgrading this car for the sake of two rounds on totally different circuits. I'll go with 2 D&Ts for our 1986 car.

Qualifying Results:
Alboreto crushed the opposition in qualifying; his driving was flamboyant, if not totally fearless. Patrese, meanwhile, would use all twelve cylinders of his Ferrari engine to start alongside his fellow Italian on the front row; team-mate de Cesaris could not match Patrese's pace, but made it into the top-ten. Pironi was curiously behind his team-mates, often getting poor runs onto the straights from the exit of the many high-speed corners.

A lack of season-end development on the Williams had left both Senna and Bellof struggling for pace around Kyalami, and the former would surely be worrying that his championship challenge had run its course.

Warwick in the Tyrrell, and Teo Fabi in the Alfa junior car both started from the top six, completely out-driving their mid-grid contraptions, and hopefully reminding team owners of the upcoming expiration of their employment contracts.

Wilson, at her home race, had done well to qualify over a second ahead of team-mate Tambay, who - along with Laffitte in the Marlboro McLaren - rather embarrassingly failed to qualify. Despite her pace, the official Alfa Romeo team had once again been made to look like clowns by their sister and customer teams.

Down on power, The Toleman team qualified within nine-thousands of each other.

Race Results:
One of South Africa's biggest annual sporting events was marred almost from the off, by a substantial pile-up on the first lap. Prost - continuing his run of bad form from Brands Hatch - spun the rear wheels of his Ferrari on the elevation at Clubhouse Corner; while the majority of the field avoided the stalled car, Pironi, Rosberg, Johansson, Watson, Senna and Winkelhock all sustained race-ending damage due to colliding with each other. In the ensuing chaos, Alboreto, Patrese, Mansell, Nannini, Jarier, de Angelis and several others found faster routes around the traffic than others.

Alboreto would expire from the lead not long after, as would both Minardis - from points positions - with engine failures.

By the end of the race, Nannini was so close he could smell that victory, but the wily Mansell squeezed every horsepower out of his Porsche turbo, and held-off the Italian through the sweeping corners of South Africa. Despite this, six points in the bag for Arrows virtually guarantees their third-place in the Constructor's Championship.

The Lotus team enjoyed a rare double-finish in the points, with de Angelis' podium a poor reward for a season of struggle. Bellof could do little other than tail those ahead of him throughout the race, and slowly moved-up the order as others in front dropped-out.
