Williams will sit out this round of D&T to provide some well earned time off to its staff, and allow our team to come back fully refreshed and ready for the big push to help Ayrton Senna in his quest for his maiden drivers title

Round 11 - Samba Grand Prix, Hockenheimring, 25th August 1985

Qualifying Results:
With everything turned-up to maximum revs, full turbocharger boost pressure, and ultra low-downforce configurations, even the quickest cars down the Hatzenbachbogen - the Minardis - could not quite compete on equal terms with Ferrari, Williams and BMW.

Contrary to Pironi and Alboreto on the front row, Prost was noticeably less comfortable around the German circuit.

A strong qualifying show from both BMW cars, in particular by local star Winkelhock, helped ease relations with the manufacturer after a difficult introductory season as a works team.

Arrows seemed the only ones who could make much use of the power of their Alfa engines, as neither the Alfa Romeo works - nor junior - team showed much promise, and the latter even managed to out-qualify the former, with Tambay failing to make the grid by less than a hundredth of a second.

DNQ. Christian Danner - Zakspeed (Pirelli) +08.663 (Trap: 265 km/h)

Race Results:
Pironi's win placed him at the lead of the Driver's Championship, usurping Ayrton Senna, at last.

After the success for bigger engines in Austria, everyone seemed to get carried away with how far they could push their cars' mechanical limits; both Brabhams, two of the Ferraris, the Tyrrell team, and Toleman teams all retired due to engine-induced problems, as well as several spins likely resulting from excess turbo pressure, including the embarrassed Williams team, who's inexperienced drivers threw a promising qualifying away.

Nannini's second place helped to put distance between the Arrows team and Minardi. Patrese and de Cesaris fell out of the points at the last minute; both Minardis had in fact retired due to complications from a vibration that developed from the twelve-cylinder turbo engine, and shook both cars to bits. This allowed Derek Daly to pick up the RAM team's first ever Formula One points, finishing four laps behind.

Manfred Winkelhock scored his first points, and a strong qualifying and race performance by the 'M Power' team will surely have helped secure further funding for BMW's works effort, come 1986.

Arnoux's fourth-place underlined what a miserable season it had been for Lotus, scoring only five total points between both drivers, so far.

Unclassified, Piquet spun his McLaren into the wall coming out of the Castrol-S, throwing away a virtually guaranteed - and much needed - point for the McLaren team.

Genuinely gutted that we went from two runners to none so late in the race, though Hockenheim was always going to be a challenge reliability-wise. Nah, the real inconvenience was Arrows picking up P2.

Arrows will refrain from using any D&Ts until after the Italian GP at the earliest, to save money for 1986.

In other news, BMW and Manfred Winklehock have both unrejectified themselves at their (second) home grand prix, both never happening in real life. (unless you count this BMW and BMW Sauber as the same entity)

After a (very) long streak of two-opportunities-per-race, we've only got the one, this time.

I'm assuming~ you'll want to go with next year's car, rather than tyre development. My assumption is based on the following metaphor: "Imagine you're on the Titanic, and there's only one lifeboat. Do you save all of your team, or a little bit of half the teams in the field?"

Round 12 - Italian Grand Prix, Monza, 8th September 1985

Qualifying Results:
With a 25 km/h straight-line speed advantage - and a season's worth of steady development - the Minardi's looked quicker than ever in practice, and sure enough, would take their first pole position. Patrese, while still quick, could not match de Cesaris' pace, for reasons unclear.

The Arrows cars put in another strong performance - rapidly becoming one of the teams to watch, on fast circuits - qualifying third and fifth. Warwick made good use of his BMW engine to out-qualify two of the Ferraris, while Winkelhock in the first of the works cars lined-up just behind them.

The RAM team's momentum seemed to help Daly, who qualified a steady nineteenth, despite being joint second-slowest - with Streiff's Ligier - through the speed trap. Meanwhile, further back, McLaren teammates Laffite and Piquet straddled the DNQ-line.

DNQ. Alain Ferté - Ligier-Renault (Pirelli) +8.985 (Trap: 256 km/h)

Race Results:
Patrese moved-up to fourth by the end of the first lap, but retired quickly with a blown engine. De Cesaris would expire from the lead soon after, although his momentum carried him all the way from the Parabolica down to the Rettifilo chicane - fogging up half the track in the process due to his turbo - which caused Fabi's Spirit to spin-off.

Although Pironi qualified well, he would not score at this race; instead, Prost inherited position-after-position as others broke down. But, Ferrari's inability to pick which one of their drivers they want to win the championship kept Williams' Senna in with a chance, thanks to his podium finish.

The real victors were surely the BMW team. After the success of Germany, Johansson and Winkelhock brought home a total of nine points for the constructor. Johansson's leap had come mostly from copying Prost's single-stop strategy and caring for his tyres; at around two-thirds race distance, the pair seemed to mysteriously leapfrog the standings.

Finishing seventh, Desiré Wilson drove hard and carefully, and would have taken a well-deserved point after a difficult season so far, had one more car dropped-out ahead.

Arrows will spend one D&T on the 1986 car, and then wait until the final set of FOCA payments before using any more opportunities to avoid going bankrupt. It's a pity that our qualifying pace didn't really amount to anything in the race, but Minardi's double-DNF means we really dodged a bullet here in terms of keeping third in the WCC.

Qualifying for Monza despite the lowest straightline speed is surprising, but I'll take it! We'll spend both tokens on next year's car, as we prepare to save for next season.

It's a lonely road, isn't it - being the Tyrrell team? Nothing ever happens to you; you just show up at every race, do your job, and prepare for next year.

I assume this is a euphemism for a corporate retreat to the sauna, or opium den, or something...

No worries - since the last race I've set the Toleman team to "All next year's car, without going bankrupt". Anyone else is also free to 'schedule-ahead' their D&T opportunities, if they wish.
