2020 Airbnb IndyCar Series - THE RETURN

Post by Ataxia »

Image

After two years away, IndyCar made a much-welcomed (I think) return to lead American open-wheel racing in 2019. Now, the saga continues.

Last year, a three-way battle for the championship between Will Power, Simon Pagenaud and Graham Rahal was won by Ryan Hunter-Reay, who came out of nowhere to win the final two races and the championship. Chip Ganassi Racing continued to sweep the awards ceremony, as Canada's Lance Stroll took Rookie of the Year ahead of European open-wheel veterans Thomas De Bock and Felipe Massa.

If there's any new teams available I'd like to take one of those

If not, I'll keep the Herta car (if Klon is cool with that)

Excellent, we're all good to move on with the next part.

First, Carlin needs to select either Mazda or Honda engines. Here's the info you'll need, Miguel.

Image

Secondly, it's time to open up the sponsor signing process! It works in much the same way as last season, except there's a few differences...

1) There's more performance dependent criteria offering pay-outs, meaning you'll have to take some thought into which direction you'd like to go with your sponsor choices.
2) Pay-drivers now offer more cash, providing you with an option of skipping the sponsor signing phase and going for a guaranteed revenue stream.
3) Keep "promoted drivers" in mind. These drivers offer extra cash, which can be stacked on top of a sponsor's pay-out if they meet the criteria.
4) Some teams offer budget towards a third-car Indy 500 entry. Applying for Indy 500 entries will be similar to last season but, instead of me picking them, you have to fulfil 100% of the total budget from the Indy 500 sponsors sheet. This will come at a later time.

Here's what to do now.

- Pick three sponsors per car, using the following form:

Code: Select all

Team:
Car #:
Sponsor choice 1:
Sponsor choice 2:
Sponsor choice 3:

(repeat for as many cars as you have)

- Teams must sign sponsors belonging to different industries, for example, it is not possible to have two "Retail" sponsors in a team.

- Make sure to note the pay-out criteria, because this will shape your driver selections down the line.

- If you would prefer to sign a pay-driver to a car, simply state "PAY-DRIVER" in the sponsor choice bit. Pay-drivers are signed IN LIEU OF sponsorship, and cannot stack unlike the promoted drivers.

>>Here is the spreadsheet with everything you need. <<

And these are the US sponsor regions.

Any questions, please ask.

Autosport wrote:Christopherson Jr joins SPM for 2020

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports have announced that Jack Christopherson Jr. will join the team for the 2020 IndyCar season. The Brit, 31, has been linked to a possible move to IndyCar since early 2019, with rumours regarding a possible Carlin seat failing to materialise after the team could not find the funds for a 2019 entry.

"[Christopherson Jr]'s really impressed us in the simulator, and we're confident he can turn this into results on the track" said team owner Sam Schmidt. "He's got all the right qualities we were looking for in a driver and we are truly delighted to have him on board"

It remains to be seen whether Sergio Perez or Karun Chandhok will be retained by the team after they failed to impress Schmidt last season.

Autosport wrote:Ryan McReynolds completes SPM line-up

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports have announced that former F1RICS driver Ryan McReynolds will join the team for 2020, completing their line up for the new season. McReynolds, who won 5 races in F1RICS, competed in AutoReject 3.5 in 2019 after failing to secure an IndyCar drive.

"Ryan [McReynolds] has proved to us that he has lost none of the speed from his F1RICS days" said team owner Sam Schmidt. "He's proved to us that he can compete at the sharp end of this highly competitive series"

McReynolds will partner Jack Christopherson Jr in an all new lineup for SPM, leaving Sergio Perez and Karun Chandhok out of a drive for 2020.

Since I've got some time to address this, I thought I'd detail the driver signing process for 2020. To clarify, this is NOT YET OPEN and any submitted bids (other than agreed contracts for fictional, DEC-owned drivers) will be promptly copy-pasted and sent 100 times to your GPR inbox to give you the inconvenience of having to clear it.

First of all, as last year, your sponsors will front you the cash to sign their desired drivers. If you fail to meet the given criteria, you'll be forced to pay the sponsors their money back in full.

Currently, budgets for the signing process are:
AJ Foyt - $5,842,000
Andretti - $16,862,000
Carlin - $4,642,000
Cassidy - $3,142,000
Ganassi - $13,892,000
Dale Coyne - $3,692,000
Ed Carpenter - $1,642,000
Penske - $19,552,000
RLL - $8,442,000
SPM - $3,702,000

Regular and Promoted drivers must be paid a minimum of $1m (unless otherwise stated in the Driver Discounts tab) for a season. IndyCar will cover some of the budget for Promoted drivers, eg. if you offer the minimum $1m to Promoted Driver A, you'll get $500k back at the end of the signing process.

Pay-drivers do not require a wage, instead they just need to be offered the seat. You can only sign pay-drivers if you explicitly stated your wish to in the sponsor signing phase (ie. Cassidy #65, SPM #7, ECR #21).

You may wish to modify your bids for a driver having seen your competition, but you must do that with a separate post instead of editing your original post (I will be keeping track of bids).

Alternatively, if you intend to sign more than one driver to drive the car over the year, then you must state the overall wage you wish to pay and then offer drivers individually the chance to drive for a part of the season.

Top-level regular drivers have a high chance of declining drives if a derisory salary is offered.

Fictional drivers:
Drivers must be paid a minimum of $1m for a season as a base fee. Each fictional driver will be assigned a tier, and this reflects the past successes of a driver. The tiers will also be assigned a multiplier, which multiplies the base wage to a figure more representative of the driver's ability. These are as follows:

Tier 1 (Title or regular race winner in top-level series) - 2.5x
Tier 2 (Occasional race winner/frequent point scorer in top/mid-level series) - 2.0x
Tier 3 (Proven points-scorer in mid-level series) - 1.5x
Tier 4 (Scrubs) - 1.0x

Note: Ashley Cassidy is not subject to the multiplier if she is offered the Cassidy Racing drive.

Bids will open when we've determined the setup for real-life driver transfers, so now's the time to ponder.

Dear all,

It is with a heavy heart that I must terminate my stewardship of canon's replication of IndyCar. With my schedule becoming increasingly more busy and my enthusiasm for the PMMF waning, it is with regret that I cannot afford the time that IndyCar requires.

I really hope that, with whatever changes are deemed necessary to make this an easy series to manage, someone else is able to take on the series and provide the representation of American open-wheel racing that I think the canon series benefits from. If anyone wishes to discuss taking it over, please feel free to let me know.

Thank you all for playing, and I hope you're able to keep going!

I was talking with Taxi about me taking over this series to run, and, while both I and he are fine with this, I'd just like to make sure the participants are also in agreement with this.

What's your plan for taking the series forward?

Honestly? I'll be honest. I plan just to finish the season out, and we'll go from there. I'll also point out that the commitment that Ataxia posted, won't be here. Which is why I'm completely fine if y'all say no. I understand, really.

I was thinking about running it on NR2003, but decided that someone more experienced at hosting should run this instead.

That’s probably the best idea.

Now that I've had a bit of a break, I'm considering keeping this going after all. There's going to be a period of time where things get really busy for me (looking at you, Paul Ricard-Red Bull Ring-Silverstone triple-header), but I'll be upfront as and when that happens.

I'll update budgets when I have a minute, and press on with things after the Azerbaijan GP. Sound okay?
